How to paint mason jars

For people who have trouble painting the mason jars, use one layer of chalk paint (can buy this at target) before painting the mason jar
I used Apple Barrel Acrylic Color#99259E (Flamingo Coral) and even after 3 coats completely dried , the newly applied coat would peel the applied layers off. So I found an old quart of pure white w/primer in my shed, painted 1 coat, let dry completely, then dry brushed with the coral acrylic and some light sanding in random areas. After a little trial and error my jars came out better than I expected...perfectly imperfect

Doing this right now to display all my dried herbs. Gonna use my mom's cricket to make stencils for each one.
Thank you for the video.....not many people took the time to say so, only questions and critiques on how to make your video...geez! I think putting the paint directly on the brush is a great idea!

Can you use matte are acrylic?
My paint always peels off when I apply second coat. I am using folkart brand matte white paint. I apply with a foam brush and let dry 24hrs before applying second coat. What can I do to make it stop peeling?
Same with me. What is the best paint to use or do we need to bake the bottle in oven?
same here even when i use gesso first
@@qwaneasia I figured it out. You have to get the paint that says multi surface. The regular acrylic paint isnt going to work

Oh no! Try acrylics! That's what I used on mine :)

Varnish in between coats. I put mine in the oven to cure in between as well. Use a round brush while going in a circular motion.
@@sunny5871 what varnish, i used gesso first and it flakes before i can even use paint
how does you acrylic paint dry without seeing the strokes from the brush? When I painted mine they never dried as a clean surface but had the paint brushes texture on it.
It wasn't bad because I wanted to paint a bear face on that vase but I wouldn't want every jar to be like that.

Probably using a sponge brush might help
If you're using a paint brush, you'll always get paint strokes. You can also spray paint the jars to get a more smooth finish.
Mine is so chunky it's awful.
Keknegen kai use 2 layers to make it more opaque.

What grit of sandpaper did you use?
I recommend a lower grit, anything under 100
I think using Gesso first might be helpful. Also, don't you use any resin or other coating?
mines flake off
You should have cleaned the outside of the jar with rubbing alcohol FIRST. Then, use Gesso to prim it, then paint. All so the paint will stay on.
I personally have had no issue with the paint staying on the way I do it ☺️
does it rub off?
Joyce Quiroz - It can scratch off if you hit it or bump it into something. It’s just for display purposes so if it’s just sitting as a decor piece on a shelf or something it’ll be ok :)
You can spray a protective matte finish on it. I googled that earlier... Protective coating for painted mason jars is what I think i googled
I did the exact same steps as you and let my paint dry for over 48 hours and when I tried to do a second coat it started flaking
If you press too hard with the paintbrush when doing the next coat, this can happen. Use light pressure and thick layers of paint. You can always spray a clear coat in between, that might help.

no, she also recommends using a varnish spray to protect the acrylic.
acrylic paint is essentially plastic so once it is dry it is actually waterproof.
Why not pour some paint onto the plate????

Ive been watching a lot of glass painting videos. I did crafting in 80s. I’m seeing many are missing some facts of painting. I used BIN on any surface not wood and primer on wood. Why is no one priming the glass? BIN is shellac based white primer. Not detracting from the video. It’s a great craft! Just not understanding the process.
Where can you get the BIN?

If you spray with protective coating you can. Inside isnt painted so its still foodsafe. As long as protective coating is sprayed on it to protect it when washing
