In this special presentation, we hear about the Southern Pacific Guadalupe Subdivision. This HO scale layout resides in the UK, and is being built by Brian Moore. I have ben enjoying Brian's model layout photos on social media for years, with their signature look that almost always includes bits of smoke or steam photoshopped into a very realistic-looking scene from California's central coast region during the transition era.
Brian originally hails from Glasgow, Scotland, and in this presentation, he talks about how he became interested in modeling a railroad from the past that's also thousands of miles away from his home. You'll also hear about about his approach to creating plausible scenes for his layout, and what compromises were considered in the process.

I cant believe you got the colors & feel for our area. Ive lived in Carpinteria my whole life. From 1953 Ive loved the S.P. and always modeled it. But you have captured it. Beautiful. Amazed. 😮

Fantastic work. I lived in the Santa Maria Valley for 29 yrs where my wife was born in 1959. We now live in San Luis Obispo and can hear the trains from across town. I just took my neighbor there this morning at 530am so she could catch the Surfliner to Fullerton. Guadalupe is in a sad state now. There is hardly any rail traffic or storage there anymore. The last time I was there the only power they had was an old dilapidated UP loco with graffiti all over it. When I was growing up my uncle did business with all those packing houses so I've been in most except Romar Carrot. They didn't want kids in the bldg. due to safety reasons I suppose. My YT handle is named after San Luis Obispo (SLO Rail Fan) where I have posted videos of the trains passing through SLO. The old rail warehouse in SLO is now a RR museum and has an elaborate HO layout of the entire Central Coast.

Interesting presentation. I live about 30 miles north of Oceano, in Templeton, CA. A good history of the Southern Pacific through this area is in the book, Rails through the Ranchos.

Brian is one of the best modelers I’ve seen. I always love seeing his videos and posts on Facebook and have always wanted a layout tour. Thanks for doing it!

Spectacular layout. Any number of occasions I had to look closely to see if it was prototype or model.

Beautiful model of 98/99, the Coast Daylight and an incredible model of Guadalupe. Did the SP run beet trains to Guadeloupe for Betteravia in 1954?

Thank you. The SP did indeed run beet trains to Guadalupe in 1954. I plan to, but the beet gons are expensive and I require lots.

I’ve always wished they could make dcc sound units horns specifically only sound from the front of the locomotive so when doing crossing scenes instead of still hearing the horn like it still hasn’t passed because of how the sound is release through the shell. Modeling three coastal Texas branch lines and a yard from the Brownsville sub to connect them from 1910-1940 so your scenery techniques and scenes help!

As the member of a family of Norwegian emigrants (and SP employees), who regularly sent ARC care packages to Norway, and contributed their first-born Americans to the Army Air Forces, Marines and defense jobs, I have to ask the question: Quisling isn’t a common name, so why does this layout use the name with an SS collaborator and executed war criminal???
