The Santa Cruz Northern was built about 35 years ago. That was before the Layout Design SIG was a thing. That was before OPSIG was around, too. Yet, almost 4 decades later, it's still a fun layout that keeps more than 10 operators engaged for hours on end. That's a real tribute to its builder's insight about both Layout Design and Operations!
Join us as we visit with Jim Providenza and look at not only the layout, but also hear about some of the jobs on the railroad. In addition, Jim talks about his approach to all of the above candidly. A lot can be learned here as we take a look at the Santa Cruz Northern in this HO Scale Layout Tour video!

Absolutely love the intro and history information. You remind me of a professor I had when I was in college. Very seasoned and always shearing specifics. You guys have raised the bar of operations. A prototypical world and several point lessons of railroading that is available to the average joe. History brought back to life.

Love it!!! I see similarities between this railroad and the NorthWestern Pacific Railroad to the north. Both were jointly owned subsidiaries of two class One mainline railroads. Both railroads got the hand - me - down equipment of the bigger railroads .Both ran through rough forest mountain terrain while being kept on a shoestring budget. Both had operated primitive passenger train service in the past. I have really enjoyed Jim becoming a better and better orator. This is his best presentation of his railroad yet by far...I enjoyed this thoroughly!

John, another great presentation of an operating layout. Jim was very articulate in his description of how it works.

Back in 1996 I showed up at Jim's for a simple layout tour as part of a NMRA regional convention and he stuck a throttle in my hand and told me I was running Mack St yard -- this is Jim's idea of "total immersion" and I've never looked back. We're blessed to have several operating layouts in the S.F. Bay Area, covering the full range of sizes -- bedroom up to multi car garage and the OPSIG & LDSIG have helped show how to make ANY railroad, in any scale an operating railroad. Check with your local NMRA region or division and dive into operations, it will forever change how you view the hobby of model railroading.

Great to see Jim's RR featured here. I've followed this model RR over the years in magazine articles. Jim seems like a very personable guy and this video is very much enjoyable! I'm a western rail fan having grown up in northern California in the 70's and 80's and am now stuck on the east coast. I only visited Santa Cruz once, and that was for my high school Sr. All Night Party at the boardwalk where I got the bolts shaken out of me by the Giant Dipper roller coaster. At least I can get my western train fix here! I'm building a D&RGW layout in my basement presently - I've only seen one basement in California and that was in Sacramento. I have read and reread Track Planning for Realistic Operation countless times! I designed my current layout using graph paper, scale rule, eraser shield and compass!
I think Jims description of running the model railroad like a role playing game is a good analogy. I've played Dungeons and Dragons and online RPG's so I can relate to that. My little sister came to visit my house and I showed her my layout, which is under construction. She asked what I would do when I was finished because she thought the purpose was in the building. I was like - run trains silly. She just couldn't get it.

@@tsgmultimedia Jim reminds me of someone I have met, I just can't think of who. Mannerisms and delivery style. Very personable and mellow. And his layout isn't super polished but very functional. It seems most layout featured anymore are museum pieces, but Jim priorities are operation and he does it well and I but it's tons of fun. I no longer live in northern California but if I did, I'd want to visit!

@@riogrande5761 Glad you like the SCN! If you ever do make it out to the San Francisco Bay Area you are welcome to come visit.
I will always treasure one of my regular operators Verne Alexander's comment one day - 'You know Jim, the SCN really isn't so special. I mean, almost anyone could build this if they wanted.' After he 'listened' to what he had said, Verne started to apologize. I told him not to. The whole point was that yes, anyone could build a railroad like the SCN if they had the vision, developed a workable, realistic concept and was willing to apply their skills - with the help of some friends!

@@jimprovidenza6664 Thanks for the reply Jim. I do hope to get back out there one day. My wife is from England I'd I'd like to show her my old stomping grounds, which was mainly Lake Tahoe area, and of course the down where UC Davis is located where I attended 6th grade up through graduation from high school. A friend of mine who also attended Sac State came from a Western Pacific Railroading family. His father and grandfather both worked for the WP and even Rich worked for them briefly during the final years before UP took over.

Catching up on this: I love Jim’s mindset approaching this like a role playing game. Putting yourself in the operators shoes and cooperatively working together to achieve the goal of running the railroad is an approach I haven’t heard before, but it opens up a lot of interesting ideas.

Jim’s has a great operating layout and was ahead of the curve before ops were so popular and that’s probably why it has lasted. It would be nice to have a track plan to orient ourselves as to where different things are though.

Great to see that you are keeping up with changes in railroading. More modern cars without roof walks and short ladders moves the years forward. Still the original design and concept seems timeless. The operatimng signal system is a nice touch. Perhaps a video about your overall signal system would be informative.

Jim thank you for offering the information behind this great operations layout: prototype operation with a crew of operators working together (distributes resposibilities without direct upper management control, etc.). Gives good additional information for my Railroad Model Operation. And thanks to TSG Multimedia for production. Best regards from an americaN operator in Germany, Michael

You know I kinda agree with you in regards on how to look at RR operations. Having worked as a Carman for over 30 years, I've come to believe a RR be it a model as yours or the real thing, that it can be looked at as a board game. As you say the players be them on a layout or working the real plant have a job to do, all on the same team! And the idea is to make money, and do it safely and hopefully have satisfied shippers, IE get the product to destination, and return the empties. Be safe on the job (game) gentlemen, you don't want to get any brownies!

I really like your model railroad. And your role-playing ideas are inspirational. I guess role-playing can be applied to any type of railroad, like traction for example. I am NOT much of a diesel guy. My preferred motive power is traction. And I also like steam locomotives. I have lots of unpainted HO scale brass traction and steam engines...but, no layout to run them on. Someday, I'll have a layout and hopefully, I'll apply the role-playing ideas you talked about in this video. You have a really nice layout. 👍

Great video & a great layout that has been in operation over 35 years. I’m an N scale model railroader in the process of getting ready to build my permanent Pacific West Coast model railroad. It will focus on the entire West Coast of North America from Tijuana, Baja California Norte,Mexico all the way to Vancouver, British Columbia,Canada. It will cover from 1974 to the present time.

The best ideas of design, motive power, reason for being a railroad and everyone working together, not a test to see how many trains you can run in a given time, that I have ever seen.

The backdrops during the part of the video where you are describing them, the tops of the mountains, are awesome! You did an amazing job painting them!! Good backdrops is the one part of building the layouts I’ve done where I don’t think I could do a very realistic job. To the point that I designed my layout so there are no backdrops. It’s 15’ x 6.5’ with a 2’ x 6’ opening in the center to operate it from. It’s on one side of my garage and I built it so you can walk around and view it from all 4 sides, eliminating backdrops. The basic idea came from Model Railroader magazines N scale Clinchfield Railroad project. I just designed my new win track plan that has a full double track mainline that makes about 2.5 laps around the layout, climbing to the highest point of the layout in the mountain area being about 6” above the main industrial areas, where there is also an additional single track local track that makes a single loop around the layout. This allows me to have 3 trains run continuously when I’m displaying the layout for people, with the 2 trains on the double track mainlines typically running 40 to 50 cars and the industrial line typically 15 or so. I’m able to run over 90 cars with 5 or 6 locomotives for fun, but then the train is so long that the head end can sometimes be in the same area of the layout as the back end haha. Any more cars than that and derailments become common due to the fairly steep grades combined with curves that are too tight for pulling so much weight.

I listening to your comment on the cement operation had me recalling our former model railroad club layout before we went module as there was a section that was lower then the main and had to be accessed by a reverse Y where you climbed a good 3% grade to get to the main line which meant backing on the spur or going on the spur and then climbing the grade which limited length of any train with passenger trains not allowed. love the layout.

I literally need about 2-3 grand just to get my track work and new system purchased as well as a modular helix and more wood for benchwork. I’m bummed my layout just sits there, double decker and eventually will be three hallway section is 14-18 inches by 12 foot and then the room is like 8’7 x 7’11 with a five foot by 1.5 foot I believe center piece on both decks but wouldn’t be on the third. To complete it would like be between 7-10 grand and as a mid twenties guy who works and lives alone running a business in trying to grow it’s not easy to get to it or put fhat money to the layout so love these videos highly enjoy layout reviews

Hi Jim how are you doing it,s been a long time since I,ve been to your house.
I think it,s been about 20 years ago.
I lived in kentfiele in 1961 then moved to Sonoma then to west valley city, Utah.
And now still there to this day.
I have a lay out in my garage that is 18x15 dcc .
Montana rail link from 1978 throw 2023.
Is the train club still in San Rafael or did that move ?
You take care from Neil schwerdt in west valley city Utah 😊

Great job... Beautiful layout... So question ❓ say your running straight track and curved all around a 13 ft by 10 ft around the room , do you have to use like code 83 or 100 all the way around . I've been using or doing this for years and I used flex on a few straight to save time n money . bad idea I guess ? anyway do you solder your joints on the track ? I tried like I said but I had flex and changing that. Thanks , joe
