My students actually loved watching this. I was happy to find this on youtube and share it. We had a very good two day discussion about this video. We finish with Ancient Greece mid September. Thank you my friend, for posting this. Cheers
YES! who ever you are, thank you so much for posting this, hell yeah love this movie. i am enternally grateful to you, for sharing this. i love all those involved in this great piece of film. very powerful performances. great stuff. blessings to you my friend ad take care.
I saw this on my local Public Broadcast station, and later, when I searched up and down to buy it, I could not find anything but a mention on the IMDB. So glad it's here.
How exciting to find this, as 'filidorable' says, a collectively-British acting master-class, from the glory days of the RSC and NT. Wonderful to see Norman Rodway, Bob Peck, Oliver Ford Davies, Stephen Moore, Ben Kingsley, but everyone is excellent. Gripping and educational.
To anyone watching this, I recommend Awakening from the Meaning Crisis by University of Toronto's Professor, John Vervaeke. They're about fifty chapters, I'm currently into the nineth. Worth the trip. :)
Thank you Bucketstein, for putting this up. I watched this in my ancient history A level class and found it fascinating. it's not just educational, but also interesting. not to mention, that the moral behind the story it poetic and haunting in the way it describes much of human history- a near constant state of war, where peace is merely the respite between wars, rather than peace being the norm. Alcibiades is the greatest character in Athenian history and one of the best politicians ever.
Though the rich are deemed to be best at looking after money, it is the people who are best at distinguishing between different arguments safeguarding our liberty.
I'm sitting my a level ancient history exam in a couple of weeks. this vid is very helpful, accurate, and portrays Thucydides well. Great vid. It was banned from being put on the telly afte rbeing shown once, because it was believed it implied that the iraq war was America's fault. Imteresting huh?
by the way my friend, do you know where i can ge this film on DVD ? i have been searching forever for this. i am so happy to have found it here on youtube. again take care friend
Very satisfying indeed. Do you have access to similar stuff. I have been looking for an open university play called seizing the fire about Damocles being chained to a rock. Anybody got it?
@@gretcher56 you're kidding right?you are comparing the first "real" historian to a man who spent most of his lectures debating why capitalism in the US was better than the communism in the Soviet union...
Yes, the speeches are more detailed, and Thucydides himself gives some insightful commentary. View this video as an introduction to the Peloponnesian War.
Really incredible and great acting. It's good to hear the English language with such a beautiful accent. Lately, all I've been hearing from England is that awful Cockney accent.

After Sparta defeated Athens at the battle of Aegospotami, she did not decide to deal with Athens as the Athenians had dealt with Melos. So obviously it is not human nature to behave ruthlessly in one's own interest. Athens only behaved in the hubristic way she did because of sophistry like yours.
Spartans massacred loads of peoples and held their Helots at bay by tyranny and murder. The only reason it spared Athens was because Athens had saved Greece from the Persians at Marathon and Salamis. You should study actual history instead of living in a 300-inspired wet dream.
I'm quite aware of Sparta's many crimes (believe me I am no great admirer of Spartan society), still the fact that Sparta spared Athens, proves that states are capable of acting at times on the basis of moral principles (even if they are as simplistic as the principle of taking mercy on former allies). My argument was merely a rebuke of 30192's absurd sophistry.

Monumental, masterly performance. Such a quality of work should be regularly repeated on TV productions.

James Bennett I'm here now. Thanks for making a path for me.
Dude Alkidiades literally was one of the worst humans to ever live .Are you serious? He destroyed Athens just because he wanted to attack to Syracuse.

The best part of the movie is the carousellic conversation between Alcibiades and Socrates.
That's the only part that comes from Plato. The rest is from Thucydides.
Unless we live dangerously, we soon cease to live at all. That sounds like Nietzsche.
Somehow all these events and constellations of powers from 429 BC sounds so familiar in 2022 AD.
Superb cast, I always thought Nathanial Parker was good as Alcibiades.
If you can understand this war, you will understand every war.
George Lucas should see this!

First of all shouldn't that be Prometheus and second, you'll really have to do better. Year? Country? Actors?
Well.... given current events, this seems timely.
I’d love to know more about how this was developed
Where is the voice that can treat Economics as Thucydides does War and Politics?
Robert Galletta milton friedman?

Athens had democracy during the war?
What are the ends of Peace? Peace at the end of War? The Dutch had a Motto, God, Profit, and Stability.
