I cannot resonate enough what Mike is doing with the backseat, we just finished our Lockwood Aircam build and we placed a G3X in the back that is linked to the G3X in the front. At first, I thought it was overkill but after flying the airplane around 90 hours I can tell you its the best thing we did. The Garmin is so user friendly that even non-pilots in the back seat can learn to use the system within an hour-long flight. The best part is when you have a pilot in the back, they can run all the systems while you focus on flying in the front. Most flights in the Aircam are below 500ft AGL so this is super nice. After owning a G3X I am sold on Garmin for life, I will not use any other system out there. They just do it better. Fun Fact- Initially the G3X was only single-engine capable, I hear that a "certain" Aircam got them to make it multi-capable;)

Mike, I just found the video of 913MP's suspenseful flight where you lost partial engine failure. It was 11PM pitch black, i wont bore you with the details. You handled it so professionally. I felt the drama so real it had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I love all that you and Mark do for GA, thanks and know that we all are so proud of you.
There is no reason for Mike to feel that he is being excessive in building Scrappy. How else can someone build the most ultimate flying fun machine than to fit it with all the dream accessories and fitout options. Well done Mike and team.
So I own a boat repair shop and sometimes I'll just reave your channel playing in the background for motivation. You're very inspirational to me. I would LOVE to fly with you some day.

I realized today while watching this video, when Mike started this build I was a fairly fresh and new student pilot and now I’m a certified pilot. Much more of what Mike talks about makes sense now over when he started this build for me. Great work sir can’t wait to see Scrappy done.
I would put the foil on the engine side where the heat in form of IR radiation is coming. I would also put foil on the side of the battery facing the engine. BTW, I love lithium starting batterys, I have used my Beltenick for 5 years now without it ever missing a beat. Weights 1,92kg. Built stainless overkill bracket for it too.
All I could hear when Mike was playing with the cockpit wiring was a Foghorn Leghorn voice saying "I have these feathers numbered for just such an emergency"
Both my 3 and 6 year olds like to watch the Scrappy build videos with me. Our 6year old keeps saying she wants to help me build one. We are strongly considering the best plane to build for our family.

YES!! ANOTHER SCRAPPY VIDEO!!! Mike, are there any plans on making a 3D scan of Scrappy like you did with Draco? For those of us in model aviation, it would be excellent to be able to build a scale Scrappy or even 3D print a model Scrappy!
Yes! A full 3D scan would be a great gift to the community. I'm certain the flight sim community has the technology, and would love to do it. Not only for sims, but models, etc.
Mike please show us how your passenger is going to get in the back seat!!!!! I have twin 16 year old boys that are working to get their privet licences now and thew love your videos. Brilliantly manic as ever. The horsepower question you gave away @ 23:22 and a few more glances, with your subtle "Push for 600 HP" starter button. Love it!
“When we need to fly at 25,000 ft.... sheesh, would be interesting to see how far you would go after jumping in the jet stream. Everything you’ve done so far is blow way past the bar for this build. Getting excited to see the initial test flights!
Climbing to 25,000 ft would sure cut down on the drag. It would be interesting to see how it affects the ground speed. Mike, any chance for a test? Just throw your supercharger back on and give it a blast. I’m betting the wing you have planned will handle it.
I was under the impression with what Mike was referring to that he would be able to develop the amount of power to climb to that height without much effort, tend to think that the supercharger would be able to maintain better performance at that altitude. Just taken aback when he mentioned it and chuckled a bit. Haven’t experienced anything over 13,000 ft in the Cessna 180 unpressurized yet, just the oxygen tank supply.
Great work once again Mike. The finish line is just over the hill. I think I am getting just as excited as you are and can hardly wait until the engine is installed and the wings fitted.
Meanwhile you're insurance carrier just facepalmed when you said you'd check slapping it onto the runway. :) With the amount of effort you put into that plane, I am surprised it isn't capable of cat 3 approaches.

@@balsumfractus Mike seemingly effortlessly overcomes the bumps to his ego when he encounters a problem, he's a masterclass of the Moonshot Mentality and what it can produce on an individual level.
But we get told we are all equal by certain old crazy ladies who want us to vote for them! You mean they lied? In Animal Farm all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others! Makes sense....
@@MikePatey mike, look into Raptor aircraft, if you get to it, it will revolutionize the ga world, isn't that your dream?

Thank You for taking me back 60yrs to my Uncle's garage and his Stits Sky-Coupe, sitting watching and even helping once and awhile.👍
What great memories for you.
No one is going to say anything about the built-in pulse oximeters!?! Mike, your ingenuity knows no bounds and nothing about this build is unnecessary. Thankful to be along for the build and eager the smile on your face when it gets airborne.
"You'll pick up your RIO when you get to the ship, and if you don't, give me a call I'll fly with you".... in that G3X equipped rear seat!
Oh top gun quotes. You have made my day good sir.
These videos are becoming like episodes of Game of Thrones, ...they start and they are over way too soon....Great stuff Mike!
Except, a little more technical than a scorpion. ☺️
Dude that is seriously the coolest cockpit I've ever seen. What a panel. Love the screens, the lights, the color, just everything about it. Just discovered your channel, keep it up!
Your attention to detail is immaculate! Such a clean and thoughtful build. I can't wait to see it fly.
Mike, I just found the video of 913MP's suspenseful flight where you lost partial engine failure. I have to tell you, it brought back memories of a flight I took in 1968. my pilot was not so professional. we actually ran out of gas over L.A, It was only by the grace of GOD we survived. It was 11PM pitch black, i wont bore you with the details. You handled it so professionally. I felt the drama so real it had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I could feel the genuine concern the ATC guy had. Kiddos to him. I am so glad you made it. where else could a schmuck like me get the excitement that all your projects give us. I love all that you and Mark do for GA, thanks and know that we all are so proud of you.
THE most beautifully thought out panel I've ever seen!!! WOW!
There is no reason for Mike to feel that he is being excessive in building Scrappy. How else can someone build the most ultimate flying fun machine than to fit it with all the dream accessories and fitout options.
Well done Mike and team.
I've never been more excited about a build of any variety than this one lol LETS GO
So I own a boat repair shop and sometimes I'll just reave your channel playing in the background for motivation. You're very inspirational to me. I would LOVE to fly with you some day.
That is the sickest instrument panel ever! Can't wait to see this thing fly.
"On Draco, I made my own batteries". I had to laugh at this. People have asked me over the years, "Is there anything you can't do??" because if I need something that I can't buy, I'll build it. I am decended from a long line of engineers. Building and creating is the most rewarding pastime in the world for me. Right now, I'm building an experimental aircraft. It's no Draco, but it'll be fun! Back to work!
"How can you tell if there is an engineer at a party? OH, HE WILL TELL YOU!"
@@scottdb You clearly don't enjoy your chosen profession the way an engineer does. Thats a shame. Go back and watch Mike's reactions to his accomplishments, in all these videos. These are the reactions that everyone should enjoy when it comes to their chosen profession. Thats what makes life worth living.
Mike - I’m in love with that plane. Something I’d love to see you build next time.... an electric plane!! Thanks for the great videos.
i asked him that before and i think he said it was certainly something he had considered, but wanted to wait until battery technology gets to a point where you can get decent performance (payload/range/power).
@@sixpackpilot Solar panels for electric power.
@@jerrywatson7176 If you park it for 48hours every 30 minutes of flight maybe solar panels would work :) With the kind of horse power the bush pilots use I don't think it's even close to being worth it
Solar is a horrible solution to charge the battery, he could just install a small diesel generator that runs off jet fuel!
@@JonT1137 What if you just bypassed the electric bits and hooked the crankshaft of the generator straight up to the prop??
"Is scrappy going to be IFR capable with this panel?"
Mike with 5 Garmin panels in a two-seater: Y...yeaaaaa I think I'll be good for IFR 😂
7. You forget the bank screen and the 10 inch screen for the rear seat passenger LOL
Mike, your enthusiasm in this video has encouraged me to get Back To Work on my project for soaring avionics! Thank you so much for sharing your love of aviation and the building process. Seeing you enjoy this build inspires me.
I just have to let you know our 3 year old daughter has been going around the house all day saying "Back to work" gesture and all 😁
That’s so adorable!! 👍🏻👍🏻😂
Holy crap. Isn’t that a little scary? 😏
Both my 3 and 6 year olds like to watch the Scrappy build videos with me. Our 6year old keeps saying she wants to help me build one. We are strongly considering the best plane to build for our family.
GREAT panel...love it. You can never have too much info as we engineers know. Rudder pedal lights...really...wow!
I’m not an engineer, not an aviator, don’t much make stuff, but I am essentially qualified to find your rare mix of passion, compassion, and brilliance utterly compelling: I’m a thinking human! Keep them coming, please.
I love the "push for 600hp" start button!!
It was blurry it says 600 🤠
600hp because 500hp isn’t enough!! 😆👍🏻
YES!! ANOTHER SCRAPPY VIDEO!!!
Mike, are there any plans on making a 3D scan of Scrappy like you did with Draco? For those of us in model aviation, it would be excellent to be able to build a scale Scrappy or even 3D print a model Scrappy!
I’d buy a model of either for sure
I would also. Is there anyone making a Draco model or display model? It is a great example of engineering!
Maybe even extend that to a virtual file of Scrappy that can be flown in Xplane11 or other Flight Sims?
Jack Newman I’d be surprised if Scrappy or Draco didn’t show up in the new Microsoft sim.
Yes! A full 3D scan would be a great gift to the community. I'm certain the flight sim community has the technology, and would love to do it. Not only for sims, but models, etc.
This is the high energy motivation I needed to go build something today, quality as always thanks Mike
I can’t wait to see Scrappy fly! You’re an inspiration, Mike.
*BACK TO WORK!*
Your a inspiration to us all. Not only on the builds but family as well. Thanks for all you do.
Did anyone else get a little tear in their eye when seeing the completed panel?
Did you notice the little tear in Mike's eye when he Freudian slipped and called Scrappy Draco?
Heck yeah who didn't!
More like 'pick my jaw up off of the floor.'
Mike please show us how your passenger is going to get in the back seat!!!!! I have twin 16 year old boys that are working to get their privet licences now and thew love your videos. I love when they watch because you are a role model I hope they will follow throughout their lives. Thanks for all you do to inspire us to do our best!!!!!!!
The seat leans forward, but I’ll show it in a future video. And thank you so much, what a nice compliment. All my best wishes to your boys for success!! 👍🏻👍🏻
For his next trick, Mike Patey will craft a starship. Keep making us feel lazy Mike this stuff is awesome!
That panel looks awesome!!!! Props to Garmin for helping you out.
Can't wait to see what the wing on this thing turns out like!
Some people are just naturally talented engineers and builders! You’re awesome Mike!
Congrats on your award! Well deserved!
I use that Aluminized tape for almost everything. I’ve found it lifts pretty regularly when exposed to extreme temperature.
I've been watching for about a year with ever growing interest and have come to the conclusion that -- after Scrappy -- you should be building Mars landers and moon shuttles. For fun!
NASA Admin 1: Who should get the contract?
NASA Admin 2: How about Mike Patey?
NASA Admin 1: We'll need a huge design & oversight organization.
NASA Admin 2: Nah -- he's got this. Now BACK TO WORK!!!
YESSSS!!!🤠
Paul,
Obviously Mike never showed you the moon rock he picked up a few years ago. Problem is he’s humble and won’t brag about it.😆😜😇
I agree Mike should build the next mars rover, Him and Elan need to get together and build some epic shit! Love the videos, cant wait to see it fly and hopefully you bring it straight to alaska!
Brilliantly manic as ever. The horsepower question you gave away @ 23:22 and a few more glances, with your subtle "Push for 600 HP" starter button. Love it!
I love this guys attitude and passion for the aviation community
“When we need to fly at 25,000 ft.... sheesh, would be interesting to see how far you would go after jumping in the jet stream. Everything you’ve done so far is blow way past the bar for this build. Getting excited to see the initial test flights!
Climbing to 25,000 ft would sure cut down on the drag. It would be interesting to see how it affects the ground speed. Mike, any chance for a test? Just throw your supercharger back on and give it a blast. I’m betting the wing you have planned will handle it.
Pressurized Carbon Cub?
Patrick Murphy Just cabin oxygen.
Hy man really love wut your doing its inspired me to start building my own aircraft and I'm now 17 so hopfuly it Flys by 2022
go for it
I can’t be the only one checking every day for a new Scrappy video....
The guy or girl who edits the video's must have something on him. Otherwise it would be "back to work and release that video!"
Try three or four times a day. This is crazy!
love this
Great work once again Mike. The finish line is just over the hill. I think I am getting just as excited as you are and can hardly wait until the engine is installed and the wings fitted.
Your an inspiration to watch. Kids should watch your videos instead of video games.
Mike has so much energy He makes the EverReady Rabbit look like Turtle.
Wait......did you just call the Energizer Bunny the EverReady Rabbit?
Who would have expected mike to do something like this panel so extreme?
ANSWER: Everyone!
Mike, It's bad ass!
Meanwhile you're insurance carrier just facepalmed when you said you'd check slapping it onto the runway. :) With the amount of effort you put into that plane, I am surprised it isn't capable of cat 3 approaches.
Mike, Been waiting all day here in New Zealand after seeing the video drop this morning NZ time.
Wow.
Attention to detail is amazing.
Can't wait to see you out flying and enjoying the flying as much as you enjoy the build.
Always lifts my day to see your videos and see your Attitude for sharing Aviation with others.
Yeah, that's a cool panel, good work!
You can always pop Scrappy in a sea container and bring to NZ to take a few of us flying!
its such a pleasure to see You designing, working on the project to reach your goals, and finishing with such good energy always a smile, never cranky, I wish you the best of the world, You are a standing person, thank you for sharing your life your project that is an inspiration. Never seen before a person with such happiness of life joy for been productive
I wish I could work with you to learn a lot.
13:35 If only you had some sort of cool zip tie that wont vibrate around on your wiring harness, instead of using electrical tape...
That's an awesome panel,it's got everything plus. NASA would be proud of this panel
Thank you 🤠
Legend has it that Mike is still filling his oil till this day.
😂
Your Super Carbon Cub Panel reminds me of a Fighter Jet panel. AMAZING!!!!
I can so feel you - wanting to play with that panel all day long. Like a X-Mas present and you don’t want to go to bed because you don’t know anything about it by heart yet.
But hey - you had me at pure carbon and orange 🥰
Mike the little button on the side should also play an audio “Back to Work!” 👍😂🤠
The fact I just watched the incredibles last night that scene made me laugh way to hard
Your cockpit looked more advanced that the star ship enterprise,Tech has moved so fast
People like this are what make UA-cam great. Seriously what an amazing, positive, smart person - keep it up Mike! Cheers m8
Thank you so much for taking the time and explaining the guss lock system. I love the fact that you will likely be able to "pop" start this high comp. beast. And the fact that you can get to the microswitch wires fairly easily makes me super comfortable and impressed with your setup. The cockpit looks gorgeous by the way. The fit and finish of all your work is better than today's super cars and it makes me want to engineer/build something of my own!
