Great looking trim job on that post, it turned out beautiful. Couldn't agree more on the downsides of using the PVC, with the impossible to get rid of dust top of the list.
Thats a great looking project as usual Jon. I really like the tall crown mouldings you make, and the proportions are very pleasing to the eye. Ive learnt alot from watching your uploads, so a big thank-you for sharing your amazing talent. All the best. Rod
the 13 haters that thumbs downed this video must be GODS of woodworking , i saw no flaws in this job or any of the other things u make , soon i will have to make the blanket chest , i love your work i also liked yer page on facebook . i think you are one of the best wood workers on youtube.. thumbs up all of your video , i'm a beginner , but with all of your vids i get better ., and an 4 out 10 right now ,. i was a level 0 ,. now im confident and have all the tools ill need to make anything . keep continue to make these great educational videos , take care FROM CANADA
Way to much work for such a simple post. should have used MDF . no need for biscuit joining this is way over kill. i build those columns on site in less than 4 hours and the last more than 15 years.
Great job but my concern is the price of the material including the glue. I believe wood is a better option if done properly which includes sealing the wood with a coat of epoxy and painting.
Very nice job. Doing all that trimming is one of my favorite tasks. Wonder why you didn't use pre-made PVC moldings, I've used both cove and quarter round in outdoor projects.
Neato Jon! Turned out very well! I like how "exact" you are with your cuts and fit...with me it's several times and a lot of waste. I guess I don't measure well enough or I'm in a hurry and want to get it finished (or both)!. Great vid!
Jon, I have watched several of your videos and I am amazed at how good your miter cuts line up...is it your measuring or your sacrificial fence on your miter saw
Part of what makes them line up is the fact that he made the carcass perfectly square. A large part of the problem in trim carpentry (in home construction) is the fact that the walls often aren't perpendicular, or plumb. When building a cabinet, you can control the "squareness" of the carcass. Trimming around it is then, simply, a matter of knowing how to accurately mark, and then cut. Observe that Jon marks trim =on the piece=, rather than measuring.
Great job on that lamp post. You need to do a pergola. I've been wanting to build one for some time. I got a great set of plans in a Lowe's monthly that used to come out. The clock continues to tick, though, doesn't it?
It looks lovely Jon a great design, but the one thing I don't understand, is that you say you used this material so you will not have to worry about, rot, and yet it looks as if it is not in contact with the ground, and is encasing a treated wooden pillar that goes into the ground, so is that not going to rot in time? It seems to me that use of a hardwood would do a job that will last as long, but maybe I am missing something!
Amazing work and explanation!! What is that black stuff you spread at the bottom inside of the post? and are you supposed to install the PVC wrap a certain distance off the ground?
Jon I like your work and follow a lot of your you tube stuff. I am surprised that you went to all the trouble of using the PVC and MDO to protect from weather then you used Pine cove Molding at the bottom on the Plinth Blocks. Won't that end up a sore thumb? Thanks John Cocking Pensacola, Fl.
Nice Job, Can you buy molding that you did on final touch ? You can what it called? I have my 4x4 already in place just building box around while it is up . Trim 1x3/4 wide thanks.
I have used this type of product before and found that in East Tennessee the tempature changes in just a few days were enough to cause significant shrinking of the product and even after a couple of touch up sessions the joints just will not stay closed. All the time I spent on making accurate miters was wasted in a sense. I would be curious to hear how this thing is doing in a month.
Hey Jon, I apologize in advance for the random suggestion I'm about to make... I've been searching for videos on youtube of how to install crown molding on vaulted ceilings without transition pieces in the corners, but I haven't been able to find anything. I know it would help me a lot and would probably do well on youtube if you made a video of how to do this.. Thanks for all your videos.
The project turned out gorgeous. This will be one of your videos I watch several times. Quick question: where did you get the MDO? The guys at the local ACE Hardware kept telling me what I meant and wanted was MDF, MDF I have plenty of.
Thanks Scott, ha ha : ) yeah man they don't know what there talking about. I got the MDO at the lumber yard not the home store, if I asked for MDO at the home store they would look at me and say ah, what ? : ) we have all been there before
what nails were used in the final trim nailer? I cant find outdoor galvanized nails for my 16 or 18 ga trim nailer. Nice job I get the nerves using that plastic bad enough PT lumber.
Hi John, did you use regular brads on this project? Any time I use them on outdoor projects they are the first problem after a few months. Maybe its just because Scotland is so wet! Gary
For the Azek painting, did you need a specific type of primer before you painted it to ensure it sticks to the material? I know it is PVC based, just didnt want mine to peel if you have a recommendation for a primer.
Great ! But if you have a Shop as it shows build everything at your shop including prime & paint and the only thing you have to do is wiring and the base trim, and if your showing how to build it with out a shop do everything on site as someone would have to do with out a shop.
Hey Tom, the lamp post is doing great… I’ll probably give it a coat of paint this spring… the fixture from Lowes, not so good… still works but a lot of the paint has worn off.
You are correct about not worrying about the weather hurting the pvc but you still used wood in the middle and it was buried which means it will need replacing eventually and you will need to remove the pvc all over again, good comcept but you failed your own goal. Looks awesome afterwards i give you props for that
Great looking trim job on that post, it turned out beautiful. Couldn't agree more on the downsides of using the PVC, with the impossible to get rid of dust top of the list.
Thanks John, yeah you know it man... all over the place
exelente.
Boy is it raining here in Jersey today! Looks great so far! Can't wait to see it filled and painted.
Excellent job. Seemed to be a lot of work for a light post, yet it did look great.
Looks great!! Love how you explain your reasons on why you used the material you did.
Very classic design, that would look great in any garden. Wish I could get molding to end up that good.
Thanks Barrett, you can
I wanted to build one like this for a long time, now I have an idea how to do that. This is very beautiful! Thank you!
that's great David, thanks and have fun with the project

Its that simple
@@tidelybumsquish MDF? Outside? Sounds like hack work to me.
Great job but my concern is the price of the material including the glue. I believe wood is a better option if done properly which includes sealing the wood with a coat of epoxy and painting.

That is a great post. Good craftsmanship.

You should be making videos about your hair! I came here to learn about the post, but you have the nicest hair I have seen on a man!
i like things that shows that grain....great video john thank you for showing us
Looks really good. Question, How do you plan on covering up the screw holes?
Jon, I have watched several of your videos and I am amazed at how good your miter cuts line up...is it your measuring or your sacrificial fence on your miter saw
This. Please answer this question :)
I noticed the same thin Jon but I figured it was from your frame making that you developed such a good eye. ;)
WoodRodent It's the fence , i'll talk about it on Tuesday ... works great

Jon Peters Art & Home Hi jon you great job i wish. i was good as you
Great job on that lamp post. You need to do a pergola. I've been wanting to build one for some time. I got a great set of plans in a Lowe's monthly that used to come out. The clock continues to tick, though, doesn't it?
Sure does, Thanks Rodney
Great lamp post. What kind of light is it and how did u wire it? I assume to the house so u can switch it on inside the house?

I just said the same thing, i guess i should have read the comments prior to posting mine lol +2
I really like this Jon. Is this the same stuff they use to make those plastic looking fences?
Amazing work and explanation!! What is that black stuff you spread at the bottom inside of the post? and are you supposed to install the PVC wrap a certain distance off the ground?
Good looking post, nicely made.
Great job. Looks fab. Thanks for sharing!

Very Nice, Like the design and the use of Azek
Amazingly beautiful. I want one.
Very awesome column. Just got some ideas after watching. Thanks
Quality work! very well done.
Looks nice! What is used for filler with this material?
Jon I like your work and follow a lot of your you tube stuff. I am surprised that you went to all the trouble of using the PVC and MDO to protect from weather then you used Pine cove Molding at the bottom on the Plinth Blocks. Won't that end up a sore thumb? Thanks John Cocking Pensacola, Fl.
I'll just give it a bit more care / paint and it should do fine, if not I can replace the molding. But I do see your point.
Nice Job, Can you buy molding that you did on final touch ? You can what it called? I have my 4x4 already in place just building box around while it is up . Trim 1x3/4 wide thanks.

Looks sweet! What filler are you going to use? Does it need to be azek type of filler or will any type work?

I use Benjamin Moore acrylic fresh start
What about using inexpensive PVC pipe adhesive from the plumbing section?
love it real nice job thank you
10/10 Jon
Yes, nice trim work. I think I'd go back and caulk those screw holes though..
awesome job
Thanks James

Ready patch, oil based wood fill
Hey Jon.. it's been 7 years... how is the lamp post holding up?
Hey Tom, the lamp post is doing great… I’ll probably give it a coat of paint this spring… the fixture from Lowes, not so good… still works but a lot of the paint has worn off.
