Starting a 2023 YZ500 2 Stroke for the FIRST Time!

- It's time to kickstart our 2023 YZ500 2 Stroke into life for the very first time! We've spent days in the workshop transforming a brand new Yamaha YZ250 into a monster 500cc Dirt Bike, and our 2 Stroke MX dreams have almost been realised!
In the last episode we fitted a BRC Racing YZM500 kit into our 250 two stroke. In this video we fit the finishing touches to our monster motocross machine, and we'll attempt to fire the YZilla beast into life for the first time ever...wish us luck!

I remember riding the yz 490 back in the day as a teenager and it was a beast , That thing must be a rocketship

Glad to see you put it in red and white livery - that's how a YZ big bore should be! I would love to try one of those. I'm sure it feels a lot more refined than my 86 YZ490!
Nice project! I remember in 1987, Yamaha made a YZM 500 for its factory riders. It was white & red, liquid cooled and had an aluminum frame. John Van Den Berg was very successful on that bike!
I remember in 85 Yamaha was stated in saying they could not afford to make works bikes, so the FIM imposed a production rule in 1986 for the USA only. Yamaha still made works bikes, and you are on the right track, the latest 125/250 is based off the YZM factory machines of the late 80's.
@@EarthSurferUSA the f i m is not the one that imposed the production rule. That was the AMA American Motorcycle Association! They did that because Yamaha was whining about not being able to build a Works bike to compete with the others. Especially Honda. After which they never built a Works bike. The true works bikes was last seen on the track in America only in 1985. They still round them in Europe, but only for a couple more years. The reason why they quit building them even in Europe was because after seeing the 86 destinations team on production based bikes ridden by O'Meara, Johnson, and Bailey beat the mega dollar Works bikes Honda felt it wasn't Justified to keep spending that kind of money and keep building that exotic of a machine when a production based bike could go out and stomp their high dollar Works bikes. That's not my opinion, that is just facts. I'm not trying nor is it my intention to sound like a smart aleck I just want to set set the record straight. These are things I've learned from being in the sport since 1984.

I had a YZ465 on 1982, that was mad enough - this one would be a proper beast! Great video, looks so great & sounds like it would rip my arms off now. Looking forward to seeing it in action next time👍
I love the considered homage to the glory days of the mighty YZM. Still to this day one of best MX bikes every built (along with DT's 86 RC500)

You are totally BADASS, I was blown away by the Megladon, and now the YZILLA, unreal Max, great job. I ride a YZ250 smoker and a CR250R, that has a Haeseker racing engine, now I want a YZILLA.

Roland nailed the jetting first go also nothing better than watching a works machanic at it , as I call them bike Doctors/spealist.
I've grown to love the yz blue but you've nailed it who could pass on white,red an gold hands down no other option would beat it , I have to have one . Absolutely awesome spot on.

I can't wait to see this in action. You have all done a sensational job. To see an open class Yamaha again is fantastic and as an owner of an old 465 I love the consistent starting and the lack of vibration.
I owned an RM 465 back in the day . Had a lot more TQ than my RM 125’s lol , but still had an amazing amount of top end for a big bore . I’d love to buy a brand new YZ250 and get it made into a 500. I’m a 4.5 hour drive from Calgary 😊
My IT-465...hit harder than the IT-490....borh good old school air cool....a little heavy...stable at speed...and yes a CR500...and a KX500 would put a whopping on both IT...
My 1981 IT-465 had 5 speeds....I had names for all of them....she was white... I called her White Lighting....
Bought her used...not clapped out...she did need eventtally M8 x 1.25 cylinder Helicoil inserts for the studs for the head..
Later as a power boost .I used to run about 10% nitromethane/ methanol....by volume mixed with 100 octane race gas...but that little special brew was useful ...to surprise my buddies with new found power....she even smelled good when running ..

Classic euro Yamaha red/white livery, 100% you nailed it!!!!! The YZM500 works bike circa 1988-89 was the most gorgeous works Mx bike ever. Full stop!

Must find 1 of the remaining 6 YZM500s in circulation to do a proper test & comparison! There were 8 built, and 2 are in the Yamaha museum. At least 2 are still being raced occasionally.

Result boy! That brings back some great memories, seeing the gold anodised rims. Was it 84 when Mitsui Yamaha teased us with the gold rims? I’ve actually got a 250 front and rear here in the workshop from back then. That looks the Sh!t Max. Happy riding ❤️👊☘️

I don’t know why but there’s something that gets me excited when I see a mint early-mid 90’s steel frame 500 even sitting next to the latest AF 500. Maybe just nostalgia and me getting over 30 now but I just love them for some reason.

Factory YZM500 had very cool aluminium monocoque subframe/airbox combination. That would suite this build also very well.
