It's absolutely amazing. I'm using the vrais app with an iPhone 6 in it works absolutely fantastic. Next step is try to render a VR-image in Blender. Thank you Sebastian König and team.
That has to be the funniest (anti)climax to a youtube demo ever! i wish that I had found this tutorial last week when i was playing with 360 video. Thanks Sebastian!
Thank you Sebastian for sharing this tutorial. I have couple of questions: Is it possible to make an interactive 3D walkthrough for VR using Blender and I am not being able to download VRAIS app from App Store, so is VRAIS only available for Android?
Hey Sebastian! Great walkthrough of how to easily create a VR image! just wondering - could you explain what the convergence is and how to determine it? Thanks!
Hi! Really useful tutorial and awesome app! I have a question about the app, but I couldn't find a contact section on the website so I ask here :) In the terms of use I read this: We will have the right to use your artwork within the VRAIS app. Does this apply also for non-published images? I have some image that I am doing for a client which I cannot share with anyone, but would like to test. What happens if I upload it on vrois without publishing it? Can you use that as well within VRAIS or the non-published images are "off limits"? Thank you! :)
And what about videos? Is there also a way to create and view them? I mean rendering out an animation will not be the problem but how do I have to set it up to view them properly? Thanks.
Hi all! I´m trying to render an stereoscopic - equirectangular image of a hallway, I already achieved to render it on a top-bottom image and watch it on my HTC Vive device on stereo, everything works fine except the overall size of the hallway, it looks bigger than it shoud. My logic was to increase the Interocular Distance of the eyes to emulate a “bigger head” but that logic didn´t worked, that just makes a mess and a potential headache. I also reduce de size of the full hallway, that didn´t work either. So, my question is, is there a way to define the size of the “spectator” or the size of the space in an equirectangular stereoscopic render, I mean… to play with some value that can give you how a fly would percieve the space or if a giant stuck his big head on the hallway. I´m thinking that it can be related with optics or cameras but you can´t edit or play with those values on a equirectangular “panorama type” I´m using 2.8RC Thanks you very much in advance!
You can actually post them on Facebook, just download a program called PTgui to add metadata to the image in order to be recognized by facebook as a panoramic/360º file.
Hmm ... I thought it would be possible to really work with blender in oculus or vive, especially including preview rendering (that's what would fascinate me the most), but that's impressive as well, very good job! Btw, your accent is, well, so German !! XD
... 2 months after video release newest blender build downloaded - 2.77a - no spherical stereo button o.O I tried to render it this way and I had a look at the picture in 3d and it worked :3 seems like that one is kicking in automatically or something
Ah cool. I had the same issue. Wondered if it was now just "auto" given I was going crazy looking for "the most important option" and I didn't have it haha.
Very good explanation on this messy topic. Thanks for your dedication. Can I watch a video made in the similar way as you mentioned in your video. I mean just change jpeg to h.264 or some other format (of course with some 100 of frames animation ;))
+TheThirdLieberkind Hey! So far we dont have plans for video. In almost every app with streaming the quality is either horrible or filesize huge, both pretty annoying things. That's why we want to focus on images. For videos there's UA-cam anyway... :)
+Sebastian König UA-cam got 360 VR video, though not stereoscopic. The concept might not make any sense when looking to your immediate sides, but it works nontheless. But I understand the broadband/storage issue.
I've seen samples of people rendering out true VR Video from Blender so it can be done. Sab is correct about file-size and bandwidth issues BUT I dont see this as a reason to NOT dable with true VR video. Be ahead of the curve! Go for it ;)
This is an EXCELLENT walkthru! Do you know where I can go to learn how to do basic interaction with objects in the scene? For instance, when the pointer hovers over an object, do something. Would this be in the BGE? Thank you for posting!
Not sure what you are referring to. What objects in what scene? This sounds very much like something you would do in a game engine like Unity or Unreal. The BGE doesn't run on mobile devices, which is something you would need for this kind of VR.
Sorry, Sebastian. I think you answered it. Your walkthru is very good for using Blender for creating the stereo 3D still images. I was thinking about the VR apps where you place the pointer in the viewfinder over an object (like a button) to initiate an action. This does sound like something done with Unity or UE4 and beyond Blender....for now. Cheers!
Yep, that's exactly right, unreal or unity. We use unity for that. Benefit of unity is that it works great with Blender, no need to export to export to FBX, Unity can open blendfiles directly. (well, it does FBX import in the background, but you don't notice) :)
Hi Sebastian, amazing tutorial! Im creating some interactive apps in unity for the gear VR, and I'm having some problems creating a spherical uv mapping that looks at the top and bottom of the sphere (is it even posible). Anyway, is there a way of rendering stereoscopic cubemaps in blender?
+Diego Conte Peralta Hey Diego! Thanks a lot! There is an add-on to render cube maps in Blender by Dalai Felinto: github.com/dfelinto/render_cube_map It outputs the 12 sides separately, so you can configure them as you need after rendering.
+jean jacques there was a problem with the windows buildbot. but if you download the latest build from builder.blender.org then you should have everything you need :)
+Matthis Scheil The button didn't show up for me either, but I did figure it out, I think :D I switched my render from blender render to cycle render so when you click panoramic you'll get a another drop down menu under that and than select the Equalrectangular. I followed every step the same except this step and I got my render to work in Vrais
I want to make a VR game that has binoculars that can follow a VR users head any and every were the user moves there head for a portion of the game. Is this possible in blender VR creation? If so how can I tract a png file that I would make the binoculars with? Thanks!
I don't have "spherical stereo" button. Panorama looks good in front of a camera, stereoscopic effect disappear to the sides and reverse at the back. It looks like cameras rotate around themselves instead of center of rotation. Any suggestions?
When I hit the Panoramic camara type, I dont see any new options come up. So I dont see "Equirectangular" or the option for "Stereo panorama". This is in 2.77a (the only version available to download that I can see.) Any ideas? Continuing through to render in the hope it will just work anyway. EDIT: Fixed. I was in Blender Render, not Cycles Render.
This is something that is on our todo list for a very long time. We hope to get that done within the next couple of months. To much do all the time unfortunately, but yeah, we want that feature too! :)
he criticizes previewing it in Google cardboard for requiring an app download and then he promotes his own app... that you need to download. Thanks but if be willing to bet Google cardboard is better.
fabulous...! You still into this sorta thing (as its 7yrs later)
Lieber Sebastian König, wie geht's Dir?
Arbeitest Du noch mit Blender?
Ich fand Deine Erklärungen immer sehr hilfreich.
Vielen Dank dafür!
Liebe Grüße

+Peter Kein wow, thanks so much for this great feedback! much appreciated! :)
That has to be the funniest (anti)climax to a youtube demo ever! i wish that I had found this tutorial last week when i was playing with 360 video. Thanks Sebastian!
Outstanding!! The best blender vr tut I have found. Thanks for the attention to detail and turning me on to the vrais app. super helpful!!
Wow, thanks a lot for the feedback! :)

I got it. Need to change Cycles Render

Hi , nice tutorial now do you know if you can simulate the double lens for virtual reality with blend4web SDK?
is awesome for still renders

I actually never used blender internal xD
Renderlayertab and enable Views

Is vrais going to be supporting 360 stereo video? you could become the new milkVR for google cardboard

Awesome! - Is there any plans on porting VRAIS to the Gear VR ?
+Mit Rør Yep, Gear VR is on our todo-list. :)
+Sebastian König You are so awesome!
Most of these settings are missing in the new ui :/
Thank You
Awesome Video!
But I can't find the "spherical stereo" button. Does anybody know, if it was removed or if theres something wrong with my build?
+jean jacques there was a problem with the windows buildbot. but if you download the latest build from builder.blender.org then you should have everything you need :)

Hi Sebastian, this is amazing video. I am Using Blender2.77. But I didn't get the EquaiRectangular option in panoramic. Could you please solve it
You must select Cylces Render not Blender Render. You aren't the first and you wont be the last ;)
How is there so many render squares (the small orange boxes) when you render, do you have a render farm?
Did you go to the website? I couldn't enter.
So plug and play then. 😉
I want to make a VR game that has binoculars that can follow a VR users head any and every were the user moves there head for a portion of the game. Is this possible in blender VR creation? If so how can I tract a png file that I would make the binoculars with?

Are there any alternative sites?
Is VRAIS working on Gear VR?
it still renders as red and cyan
I don't have "spherical stereo" button. Panorama looks good in front of a camera, stereoscopic effect disappear to the sides and reverse at the back. It looks like cameras rotate around themselves instead of center of rotation. Any suggestions?
Did you download a recent build from builder.blender.ord, as mentioned in the video? If yes, then you must have that button.
Sebastian, you saved me A LOT of time! I tried 3 last stable versions, and that's the cause.
3:31 Virtual Boy

Nope :( So I'm stuck at ~2:19 on this tutorial. Any tips appreciated.
Ignore me! I was still in BlenderRender, not Cycles. Duh!
Spherical stereo is still missing though :(
sir, if I want to do something like walkthrough vr in house interior unit is that the same that way u do?
i am not sure what you mean. of course you can do interior 360° renderings with this method, but you cannot move in them...
You can only do one room at a time, if you want to do a whole house, apartment etc. you'll need to use something like UE4.
someone use VRAIS - VR at last month i cant upload scene and dont know why :(
I can't find the app. It's not on the play store.
Yeah, unfortunately it has been taken down...
Is there any way to share my uploaded image with others? I want to send a link or something so they can see my image.
This is something that is on our todo list for a very long time. We hope to get that done within the next couple of months. To much do all the time unfortunately, but yeah, we want that feature too! :)
but how I can put sounds in the vr view?
wouldn't you just render it out and then in a separate video editing program then you would add sounds
I mean... You could've just shown us the video, not looking through the phone
RIP :(
he criticizes previewing it in Google cardboard for requiring an app download and then he promotes his own app... that you need to download. Thanks but if be willing to bet Google cardboard is better.
VRAIS died. RIP
So for everyone who whats to try this out. VRAIS is dead. :(
