The Neptunia franchise has always been mixed in quality, yet Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution is especially disappointing when following in the footsteps of Neptunia: Sisters VS Sisters. The lackadaisical combat design overstays its welcome, the narrative does nothing to compel you past the established premise, and the potential of various conflicts and dynamics is squandered.
Past the endearing character-focused slice-of-life scenes and the quality English dub that brings the characters to life, Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution is just not an enjoyable time. At most, players may enjoy the Disc Creation emphasis for passive fulfillment, but that's about all you'll get.

I'm one of those people who really loves Sisters vs Sisters. Maybe if I write from our perspective you can better understand why we do this. In bullet points:
- We love the characters with all our hearts (seriously)
- Some of us, including me, prefer to love the candidates
- The story is extremely good, you need to play it all the way through so that the full potential unfolds and you understand how awesome the story is
- The developers show that they are open to new ideas and want to rethink things so that the game doesn't become too static, which brought excitement and curiosity
Yes, the game was unfortunately immature in some points, that unfortunately has to be admitted, it could have had huge potential for a breakthrough success that would have surpassed all other parts, but it is a very nice game because of the characters and the story. I'm not going to disagree with anything stated here, there's just no point in even trying, so I'll instead give some advice to anyone who happens to see this comment.
If you are feeling the combat to be overly stiff, a lot of the combat improvements are locked behind the Disc Development system. There are additional abilities and modifiers you can only get from it.
For instance:
Step Dash/Guard Cancel - Cancel an attack with a Step Dash/Guard
Power/Break/Rush Cancel - Cancel a Power/Break/Rush attack at any time (even mid animation)
Finisher Combo+ - You can cancel your Finisher with your other Finisher (though it allows your first Finisher to be more cancelable in general)
Double Step Dash - Allows you to cancel a Step Dash with another Step Dash once
Combo Step - Continue your combo after Step Dashing
Combo+ - Increase attack count by 1 before the Finisher, reuses the first attack.
Guard Counter - Successfully guarding an enemy attack gives you an invincible counter attack
And more...
Tacked on or not, you will be making your combat experience worse by not utilizing Disc Development. While not everything is going to available at the start, you can get most of these when it unlocks about an hour in. Just put up a couple Discs to development automatically in the background and check back in now and then.
Yes! I totally agree. It doesn't take a genius to figure out the system. It's very fun!

This series is my casual JRPG without high stakes. IMO, Combat in 4 Goddesses Online is much smoother and funner than Sisters vs Sisters. I want to play this one too.
This is actually one of the best spinoff games in the Neptunia series. It's really fun. I agree. Better than SVS, but somehow = 4.5? That doesn't make sense. Better story. Better gameplay, but equals uncompelling.
IIRC there was an interview some time ago that suggested that Compile Heart is working on a new mainline Neptunia game where "mainline" in case of Neptunia stands for a turn based game with a plot focusing (since mk2) on the CPUs and CPU candidates from Hyperdimension. If this ends up being the case hopefully it will allow the series to return to the quality of Victory/Re;Birth3 and VII.
I REALLY hope they go back to turn-based. Victory has one of the best turn-based combat systems of all time.

I knew that removing the AP was going to be a risky idea, I had no idea that it would hurt the combat that. I thought it was strange how I heard so little about the story, and now I know why. That's disappointing.

I can never make heads or tails about this franchise, and it's hard to know where a good entry game is for this. Would NP ever consider making a video series covering good entry games for long-running franchises? Seems like that could be cool considering the history of some of the VNs yall cover

If you have a Switch, the Re;Birth trilogy is coming next week, which are essentially remakes of the first three games in the series, so that would be the ideal starting point. The three games are also on PC, though, so you can get them that way as well.

Western devs need to hire writers while eastern devs need to hire level designers, i had fun in the first hyperdimension game but by the time i had to start the third one i just couldn't do it past the 5 hour mark, too much lazy copypasting of the already mediocre maps.
Someday i'll bring myself to start the megadimension game since it's one of the best rated.
There was a game called "Super Neptunia RPG" made by a western developer. But it was also pretty bad.

Neptunia games are for neptunia fans. As much as I'd like for the quality to increase, i honestly have given up that idea. Regardless, I will still always buy every limited edition release as I love the franchise.

Don't get both. The "Sister vs Sister gameplay style" is terrible. Kinda clunky and uncool (like the previous entries got flashy SP attacks and ExE drives. These ones don't have SP attacks and the ExE drives are worse than SP attacks)
This is my opinion despite liking the plot (as in the terrible jokes and general nonsense-style story telling. Not boobs)

Probably some players suppose this is some kind of "Final Fantasy With Pretty Girls"? Nope. Neptunia games (except for a few spinoffs) were always mainly comedic light-hearted visual novels. Dungeons always were just a way to level up and proceed to the final boss-fight. The victory triggers another story visual-novel segment and so on and on until the conclusion is revealed. Simple. Grinding was always present in all games (more or less), as well as some optional "true" ending for those curious.
Wonder what NoisyPixel expected? That Compile Heart / IF will pour hundreds of millions of risky dollars into the production? Some better story in the world where cute little girls rule over their kingdoms where almost everything is a video-game spoof? Be reasonable.

I don't like turn based in nep games so was looking forward to this as a game dev tycoon/hack n slash fan. Wonder if it's still worth it.
It's not a game in hack'n'slash genre. It's an evolution from their original fast turn-based combat system where you could design your combos. They just removed time pauses. That's why you can't cancel your attacks (for example). I think you'd be disappointed if you approach the game as some kind of Devil May Cry.
It's really smooth and fun in this game.
Please, do something about voice recording. It's too bassy. Like, the person in this video talks directly to my insides making them resonate in a bad way.
I'd pick the game anyway. I'm a fan of the franchise, also Sisters vs Sisters was really great.

Weird. I've been playing this since I got it yesterday, and it has been great. I didn't notice most of the drawbacks listed in this video. Some drawbacks, yes. I think it's better than Sister vs. Sister. 4.5 seems harsh.

They actually updated the combat quite a bit in this game. I don't really want to go back to svs. They gave this a lower rating by like half of what they gave SVS. I don't understand how a better game = worse score and negativity.
To me I was half expecting the three new ones to be called Agent CPUs. Guess Failure is one thing on this one.

Oof. They really need to go back to turn-based. Still buying this one...twice...because I've waited all series for them to put the Atari Jaguar in a game (AND the 3DO?! Heck yeah!) but man I wish she was in a better game. I have a feeling I'm gonna enjoy the story and detest the gameplay.

Oof, that score must sting some people. But seriously, imagine if they made a 2-D, turn-based Neptunia game with their budget. All they would keep is the voice work & character cutscenes. Cut the cheap & re-used 3-D stuff and focus on the really important things that way. I think they could make something truly impressive.
Super Neptunia Rpg was basically that and they haven't done anything with it since. No patchs, rerelease or sequel to fix the games issues, let alone the ones the switch version has on top of the base game.

Neptunia is definitely a niche series, and its never going to be "amazing", however i really yearn for the quality of game that was Megadimension. It feels like outside of sisters v sisters, which dont get me wrong is still pretty far off, nothing that has been released recently has really come close to it. Even though I always have fun with neptunia games, as my favorite parts about them are the characters, it really feels like outside of svs, we had a lot of "slop" from 2017 to when svs released. Its starting to become harder to be excited for new games; Uzume is my favorite character in the whole series, yet i have little hype about her bike game thats been revealed. I really think the franchise needs to take a couple years off and just focus on a new mainline. I love this series, but its getting hard to be excited about new content.

Think last time I played a main line title was Victory, which I only finished in Japanese, yet I still get the Limited Edition from Idea Factory of every release, as I love this series.

Liked nep reverb better combat is a bit bland and not very fluid after attacking you can't dodge for like 8 seconds making dodging almost impossible
You need to invest in the disc development system for abilities like Power/Rush/Break Cancel and Guard/Side-Step Cancel. These are what allow the combat to be more fluid, getting rid of end lag and even allows for other actions in the middle of attacks.

This is why I hate some UA-camrs because I complain and the company stops doing DLCs for the game all because of videos when they complain and make a UA-cam video about it so if you kill DLCs you going to lose a million views players UA-camrs UA-camrs kill DLCs for some games not judging you players because he doesn't know what he's doing

They are still re-using old assets? I kinda assumed they moved on from that, but I guess Compile Heart wont change, if the fans dont really care about the lack of quality either. I'm just disappointed, because the devs should do much better and people should hold them accountable for that. And also, to me it sounds like they are making these games wayyy too PG and the censorship of SvS proves it. I knew next game will follow similar nature, since the fact that in RB;3 they make fun of all the cashgrab nature of mobile games, while SvS trying to do "mobile games are good games too" bit.
The "censorship" of SvS happened only because IFI made a mistake when applying for an ESRB rating causing the game to release without the "Language" content descriptor. Once they became aware of this they had a choice of either recalling all physical copies of SvS to update the rating or change some of the dialogue to make it match the ESRB rating on box. Given how expensive a recall would be it makes sense why they went with the second option. Game Maker R:Evolution does feature the "Language" content descriptor so the dialogue it in won't be toned down like it was in the patched SvS. I feel the need to point this out because a lot of people jumped the gun and accused IFI of intentional censorship which makes no sense since if that was their goal then they would change the dialogue prior to release instead of having to bring the VAs into the studio to re-record some of the voice lines.
I'm still buying DLCs for that other game
Never been interested in this series except for the artstyle. I think there cool for what they are and are unique from most RPGs in terms of what the story is about, but I'm not too interested it's very aware of itself which for me personally takes me out of it

This review proves Noisy Pixel is the new IGN. *sigh* It's not hard, you just need to pay attention to the mechanics and build characters properly. I'm doing the hardest dungeon in the game early on and breezing through it cause I took the time to learn how to play the game.
Secondly it's pronounced "Hist-twore", a combination of History and Grimoire. Just fyi.
This review makes me question Noisy Pixel's credibility. I mean, you haven't bothered to learn the mechanics "lack of strategic value" proves you never bothered to learn the disc system which effects combat and that's just naming one issue with your review. Your lack of attention to details and comprehension of game mechanics makes me wonder how little attention and effort you've put into other reviews.
Normally I don't post on review videos, because it's all a matter of opinion. But you put so little work into this review, it's blatantly misleading and offensively lazy. I had to say something. It's almost as if you did the minimum you felt you had to do and slapped a terrible review to fill out 5min and since it's Neptunia, people will "over look" your lazy and incompetent work. I HAD to point it out. This review is absolutely dreadful. Learn to play the game before making up a review about it.

Unfortunately the franchise has been crap since the last main titles. All the spin offs for years have been really bad and i havent had interest. I remember trying 4 goddesses online and i could literally stand still spamming attack on the final boss and it never hit me once until it died. The super rpg was another i attempted to basically get a bad mobile game that was horrible. Its unfortunate that i used to like this game but its been nearly a decade since the last main entry oof.
See, I knew this gamemaker r evolution and sisters vs sisters and every other games with the two horrible voice actresses was bad idea! I felt it in my gut.
I just wished they cared. They are just pumping these out at this point. This series had so much potential, but they are running it into the ground.

The fact that this game runs at 30fps on the PS5 is infuriating. But the fanbase of this franchise never complains. They buy every Nep game because they fear that the franchise ends if they don't.
