Let me tell you how life can change in a second. In 2013 I was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to my liver. It did not look good for my outcome with a 15% survival rate. Two operations and a heavy round of chemotherapy was what we started with, my last treatment my with was diagnosed with a very aggressive breast cancer. But God was not done with us and we are both cancer free today. We are just 14 months away from retirement and we plan full timing it. If I could I would retire now but we will be in pretty good financial shape if we stay the course. Life is short and do not take it for granted. Our God is an awesome God! Praying for your complete recovery and a good job!

We wish y'all well on transitioning to full time life too! Also, congrats on your upcoming retirement! We also have a couple of friends that were diagnosed with stage 4 cancer that are now cancer free and it is amazing what God can do! Thanks for the prayers! For a man like myself with multiple disc injuries, I will tell you this, ice is your best friend 10 minutes intervals for five to six times a day.
Back pain is no joke. I hope you feel better soon. Just make sure you ice and relax. May even try some heat and then Ice afterwards.

Ice ice ice! I’ve had a hip replacement and 3 level back surgery with a fusion. I can relate to your pain! I lived on ice and ibuprofen until I couldn’t work another minute. At that point I agreed to take real pain meds and they made life bearable again. I still take them as I still need both shoulders and one knee replaced. I don’t feel anything but relief. No buzz, no foggy brain. People are surprised when they hear that I am even talking them.
I wish you well and hope you find relief soon!!

I totally believe in enjoying life now. My dad died at 51 and my brother died at 27. Tomorrow is never promised. That’s why we live in our camper 6 months out of a year. My husband has a job that does not allow him to travel but we are seasonal in a nice campground, and enjoy every moment of it.

First of all, I'm sorry to hear that Matthew was injured, and I hope he's feeling better now.
Since losing Ed while boondocking with you two, I've had to learn to handle everything on my own. There’s no other option-you just do it. My son showed me the 'swing' method to get the propane tanks back into the RV. Believe me, it’s not easy without Ed, but if I want to continue the RV life, I have to learn how to do everything myself. Love you two!

I lived in an older model RV for three years (it was family owned) in a beautiful RV resort in Texas. I chose not to rent, but to stay in the RV as I was only originally planned to be in Texas for about a year. I ended up being in Texas still during the Great Freeze winter and then battled a really hot summer with no provided shade trees before I left state. I, too, handled the RV by myself. I dealt with roof leaks, black tank issues, etc. Before I left, I had no hot water. It was so hot that summer, I didn't even need hot water to shower! I just filled and poured a big glass of water as my shower water. (I used the glass since i had no hot water, and there was not enough pressure to run the water for a regular shower), but the water temperature made my showers to be refreshing...lol
I left last fall and went back to my home state. I was never so glad not to be living in an RV!
I'm down with temporary (weekends or so) staying in an RV.
Kudos to those who embrace it, but RV living is just not for me.

Praying for you. Mine wasn't sciatica. Everyone is different. Mine was a cold water feeling going down the front of my leg. Couldn't walk well or go upstairs. I couldn't get in a bed, and would start IV's standing up at work. Boom --one day something happened and the pain was so bad. A pinched nerve. Ended up in the hospital putting blankets on floor and lying with feet on chair. CT done and a ruptured disk with nerve pinched discovered. Long, long story however the day I finally saw the surgeon he got an OK to do surgery that afternoon-- outpatient. I hadn't eaten, prayers answered , surgery picking shrimp 1.5 hrs but I got my life back. Have no idea your issue however will continue to pray.

The top gave way and a large wall clasped on me forcing me to the ground. They had to reconstruct my Rib cage completely. They had to pull my ribs back to what they thought was the location that it should of been in before the accident . You know what I do just fine they had me on all kinds of medications, but I have stopped taking almost all of them. Sometimes its hard but I just do not give up. We really like this area, Both of the campsites looked great. We drove through San Luis as we were passing by - it looked great and glad you guys showed us around more - we didn't have time to stay there but made note for a future trip. The hike looked great too - real bummer it contributed to your ER visit. hopefully you are recovering quickly and will be back to normal soon. Safe travels guys!

I used to build communication towers and was in really good shape and one night coming home from work a driver coming at me made a left turn right in front of me as we both went through the intersection at 55-60 miles per hour in opposite directions making contact just past head on. Neither vehicle went more than 20 feet from point of impact. Destroyed my pickup and my spine. I didn't know about the spine until the next day. When I woke up I could barely move any part of my body without level 10 pain to the tenth power. 37 neck and back surgeries later I have metal plates and ceramic discs and I have 2 spinal cord stimulators one cervical and one lumber. I hope to complete my living junk yard with a thoracic stimulator. Changed my life forever in the blink of an eye. But I'm alive.

That said, I totally get what you said about life changing in an instance.
A year ago I spent a week walking/hiking in Alaska. I was training for a long distance hike. When I left Alaska I was fine; when I changed planes in Seattle I was limping so I knew something was wrong. When I landed in Hawaii I couldn’t walk. Bottom line is that I’d blown out my knee. Thankfully, a new knee has put me on the road back, but it’s taken a long time.

Back pain is awful. 20+ years ago I hurt back bending over and was told it was a herniated disk and had several injections over the years. Finally went to a spinal doc a couple of months ago, its a torn ligament. This time i received a different type of injection directly into the ligament (kissing spine Syndrome). Total relief. I feel for how you were walking because my back would do the same and I felt paralyzed. Go to a spine doc. Hope you feel better.

Great advice at the end. I sure hope this injury is temporary and heals quickly. Once you feel better, you might want to consider following a stretching video as part of your daily routine. There's a physical therapist who does stretching videos for scoliosis. (Can't remember the channel right now). These stretches helped my back pain quite a bit when I was doing them regularly. Also, consider finding a good chiropractor. I've been dealing with back pain since I fractured my spine as a teenager a few decades ago, and then being rear ended about ten years ago just about did me in. Stretching and the chiropractor have kept me mobile.

Garmin RV780 is a total failure. There are multiple issues with it, but the number one issue is, when updates are ready to upload, all restrictions that the RV owner enters into the device are ignored until the unit has been updated. I understand the predicament. 6 years ago, before I retired, we had just purchased a class A motorhome, just to get some practice in I took the wife and a few of her friends up to a local lake in the mountains about 50 miles away. So on Sunday the day we were supposed to leave I got up early to do some trout fishing as the sun was coming up, everyone else was still sleeping. As I made my way to the waters edge I had to cross over a patch of some sort of salt grass which is kind of slick, add to that I was not wearing proper footwear but my favorite flipflops, add to that the grass had a frost on it to boot. My second or third side step as I moved down the bank my right foot lost traction and slipped, the slip was only about a foot but I lost my balance and the flopflop suddenly regained a grip, that caused my foot to loose grip to the flip flop. All said and done that caused my right ankle to flex beyond a humanly impossible angle. As this only took a second to occur time seemed to slow down, as I was falling, as my ankle was being turned but before I actually hit the ground I felt and heard my ankle break with what felt and sounded like someone breaking a carrot in two. I played there for a minute without moving saying to myself “I just broke my ankle”. There was no cell service, yelling for my wife was not an option. I had to muster the will to get up, walk back to the RV and then tell her what had just happened. At first she didn’t believe me, that was until I showed her my purple and swollen ankle, she almost went into shock and fainted at that point.
So getting back to being prepared, she had never driven the RV, add to that I have a jeep cherokee toad that I’d brought with us. We needed to dump the black and gray tanks, connect the jeep let alone drive home. It was a total fail, I had her drive the jeep home, alone I dumped the tanks and drove down the mountain and home. I had to use my left foot for the accelerator and brakes, that was an eerie experience doing all the switchbacks down but I made it safe but not too sound. She still refuses to drive the RV, but she did throw away all my flipflops.

@@BrokenDreamsReborn That happened in 2017, I was laid up for 2 months. After I got home, and then went to the hospital all they would do was put it in a splint and said no walking on it at all, told me I needed a steel plate on one side and a few screws on the opposite side, the problem was availability of operating room time so it was 8 days later when it was operated on. It’s well healed up now, but there are 12 screws that fasten the plate to the bone, when the weather is cold the screws transmit that cold into the bone, not painful but it causes an ache kind of like when you drink an icey on a hot day and you get a brain freeze. When it happens I have to stop and use my hands to warm it back up.

First thought, Sciatica, but from a Bulging Disc or Herniated Disc.
Had this happen to me on a 10 day trip through upper Michigan in Trailer. Had it before at home so knew what it was. The Bulging Disc rubs on the Sciatic Nerve. Feels like Fire!
I Screamed out at night getting off a Foam bed. Was terrible. Paralyzed legs mostly.
Campground Mgr had been through it too. I was taking Ibuprofen 2 at a time every 4 hours. Some help but Faded at 3 hrs.
He told me he had to take 4 at once every 4 hours for a few days to get through his. So I tried 3-4 every 4 and it really helped. Hard on Kidneys I suppose. 🙄
The Main Treatment that reduces it the fastest is Icing! Flat Blue Gel Packs from Freezer slipped into a cloth slipover cover or wrapped a thin cotton cloth.
At first the shock is hard to take, wrap in a Washcloth if so to Insulate it more. Just gotta keep Cold on and around pain points to reduce Disc and Nerve Swelling so they shrink back away from each other. Use the pack till it gets warmed out and flexible. I would Ice for hours with breaks between Packs.
I got this info from several Chiropractors. Slow at first but daily use for a week can do amazing results! If you use a Heating pad you Increase Swelling of Disc. I made a big mistake with that early on, self treatment.
Really need a Chiro to X-Ray to see if Degeneration is there and which Discs are damaged. They can also do Stretch Alignments standing up or face down on padded table. I have to stand on bottom steps facing table, with table Vertical. Then they slowly lay me forward and down with powered tilt table.
Depending on injury type they can do Pain Blocking with their cool Stun (mechanical) Hammer Tool. (Spring Loaded). Targets multiple Nerve Points.
Chiro would be most helpful over Docs and they can Prescribe Meds too. Hope this Helps Matt! 😊

I am just sharing. My last disk in my lower back is blown towards my spinal cord. If I end up like you. I have been down for up to three months. Mediation doesn't work for me personally. What I personally use is magnesium and niacin. Then. Hot and cold packs. Once I personally get my lower back to relax. I lay flat on the bed and try to get my hips to pop back into place. Inturn my lower back. I am allergic to almost all medications. Sadly. I use tools as dollies to help me not to over due it. I am just sharing. Take care.

I concur. I hurt my back lifting a very heavy bale of hay. I went to a Chiropractor in Wickenburg, AZ. A machine “over worked” the muscle that was in spasm. It was like a miracle. Some years earlier I was prescribed Flexoril. I had a bad reaction to that muscle relaxant.

Matthew, i feelyour pain, brother. I had to go on disability and take an early retirement. Didn't plan on it so soon. Had to sell our home. Bought an RV. Found out this arthritis is very progressive. I had at least another 7 or 8 years to work. Anyhow, trying not to whine, but like you, can't get around well. It has put a lot more responsibility on my wife. So now we are sitting in an RV park in Texas and not traveling at all. Do you have leg cramps at all? Dang they hurt. I've tried everything from aspirin to gummies, and nothing has worked. I use a cane and a walker. Can't sleep in a bed and sleep in a chair at night. Almost brings me to tears that someone has this problem, too.

Brother I know you’re pain, I am recovering from a broken hip in 3 different locations. I had to have screws and rods put in. Thank god at home on my handicap ramp. I know I was in trouble when the ambulance people were wheeling me in er and surgeon and anesthesiologist met me as I was being wheeled in on the gurney. All I remember is the anesthesiologist telling me OK good night we’ll see you when you’re done. Then I woke up in recovery. I got the news about rods and screws they put in and tell my girlfriend and my daughter I was okay. The doctor came back and said I am going to keep you drugged up until it starts to heal. Two weeks later and I finally got to walk and it’s still healing. When I get home I slept in a recliner for almost a month. 6 months and I still am in pain every day.

I'll share my story. I had back problems for more that 10 years, could not walk more than a few hundred feet or stand for more than 10 minutes. I saw many doctors and tried many treatmen plans, but all to no relief. Lastly I visited Cleveland Clinic in 2018, they said my issues was due to inflmation, and I could not take NSAIDS because of my kidney diease. In September 2019 I changed my diet to a low inflmatory ketogentic diet because of other health issues. In 3 months my back problem was gone, I considered it amazing, all of my other health issues went away also over a period of 6 months. Just know there may be a solution that your medical staff may not consider, there's no money in helping you by changing you diet. I can currently hike miles with out issue, last year we were in the same Campground, site #16. Wish you luck with your back!

@@nancyjones6784 I built my own diet from a lot of research, but there is a shortcut, the closest diet I can recommend is the PHD diets from Dr. Ken Berry, just google him. He has videos for a spectrum of diets from Keto to Carnivore which he refers to as the Proper Human Diet. My diet was very close to what he proposes. Cut out inflamitory foods, like wheat and other grains, cut out High Omega 6 fats like vegatable oils, seed oils like conola, and use Saturated Fats, like bacon grease, lard, butter, talow. Eat all the things we were told was bad for us and cut out all the foods we are told is good for us. Dr Eric Westman at Duke is another source, but his diet is not antiinflamatory, just weight loss.

Hello, PLEASE SEE A GOOD CHIROPRACTOR! I'm not a doctor, but I feel I need to share my VERY SIMILAR experience from 8 years ago when I was 61... We had just moved a full 26-foot moving truck with the help of a couple of friends into our new condo with bending outside stairs. I later learned that during that process I had knocked my sacrum out of whack, which had tilted and torqued the sacroiliac joint. As I stayed very active over the next few days, there was some mild discomfort but I figured it would resolve and/or I'd see a chiropractor once we were settled and had more time. Another few days and I wound up exactly like you describe: excruciating pain (I told my husband childbirth was easier than this - I had two babies "naturally," no C-sections). The pain on the 1-10 scale was an 11. I had to crawl to the bathroom, starting passing out any time I attempted to stand up. I finally found a chiropractor and got there with my husband's help, "walking" bent at a 90 degree angle just like you said. He adjusted my sacrum while I was still bent over so we could get me on the chiro table with my legs straight, then he said one leg was almost two inches shorter than the other! My body had been "compensating" all that time walking around (like your hike to the waterfall) while my sacrum/sacroiliac joint were messed up, and this had eventually caused severe inflammation in my psoas muscle on that side. Please Google the PSOAS - it goes from inside the groin, wraps around the hip and connects near the base of the spine, it's a big muscle! When inflamed it compresses a lot of nerves than run through that area and causes the extreme leg, pelvic and lower back pain you and I both experienced. It can also cause bladder issues b/c of this nerve compression. I walked out of that first appointment standing up! I had to return for several more sacral adjustments but the pain was greatly reduced from the first one. He explained it would take several weeks of taking it easy and NOT LIFTING ANYTHING HEAVY for the inflammation to go away. Ice and anti-inflammatories (not steroids!) were my constant friends. Hope this helps. I know how scary it is for both of you, and I wish you well!
