  • In this Holidays and Christmas episode of The Little Things we look at the Electronics Boutique Catalog from 1992. In the 1990s, it wasn’t Christmas until you had a visit to the Electronics Boutique, Babbage’s, Gamestop or Software Etc. in the local mall. The internet was still in its infancy, and magazines and catalogs from the gaming and software stores was how many people decided what games they wanted for Christmas. Between the time when the oceans drank Atari and the rise of the Sony Playstation, there was an age undreamed of. The Reign of the Nintendo Entertainment System was contested by a new competitor, the Sega Genesis. But Nintendo would not go easily into that good retail night, and launched its own, new, and more powerful system…the Super NES. The third great console war was in full swing. Across the great Cyber Divide, Home Computers were becoming common household items, and Windows 3.0 was making them more accessible than ever before. The Internet barely existed, and even looking at a map required a software CD purchased from a Computer store. But this also brought about a boom in Home Computer based games. The Home Computer would soon become a video game system in and of itself. Journey back to a dimly remembered age, as we look through the Electronics Boutique 1992 Holiday Catalog and remember Christmases long, long ago. Egad! After running the number, I just realized that I spent over $1,200 in DOS Games alone way back in 1992.

Never tell me the odds...er...the financials. Anyway, money well spent. You can't put a price on those digital memories. Except you just did. Oh well, I hope it brought back some great memories. Thanks for watching!
