This was the model kit that got me back to model making
awesome!
Been building models over 50 years, never heard of heating your knife blade before removing delicate parts from the sprue. Will have to try that out! Thanks!!!
Yes, sometimes it can help remove certain parts, but you have to be super careful with it
@@ModelMinutes great little kit and highly recommend it.. So much so that when I built it I went out and bought another 1.
I just got this kit and am looking forward to building it this weekend
Thank you so much for this video!
Hope you enjoy it!
Great job. These new moulds look great. Mustangs look good in RAF colours.
I think so too!
I have one of these that's been hanging around for a couple of years, almost as if it were waiting for the outbreak.😐 I haven't built an aircraft kit for about 45 years and just started it today. Looking good so far.
I'm glad you came back to the hobby! :D
@@ModelMinutes I also recently finished a replica of my mx5 Eunos using the tamiya 1/24 kit. Wish I had waited now.☹️
Good job Matt!. Thanks for the review. The RAF scheme is very interesting and has a lot of color.
Thanks! I agree, it makes a change from the silver versions
RAF schemes are boring, American silvers are much more interesting because you can paint different shades on separate panels and add some great nose arts, groups' individual maekings and kill marks
Thanks Matt. Once again a extremely helpful tutorial!
My pleasure!
It’s always satisfying to watch your videos because your voice is soothing and your models always look so good once they are complete
Anonymous 254 thanks, I’m glad you like my videos. They’ve improved significantly since this one was uploaded ☺️
I have two of these kits to assemble! I'd never seen or even heard of a P51 Mustang in RAF colours until I clocked these and I've just started building model kits again. For this kit, I'm going to paint the camouflage on while the wings are still on the sprue so I can finish up and admire my work a lot quicker. Also, I'll be using very wide cheap masking tape with the camo patterns cut out beforehand as it was taking me weeks to find the time to build my fiddly 1:72 kits! Thank you for an excellent video and I'll probably not bother having the wheels down now on this 'un 😊
Sounds like a fun project!
Excellent video. It was interesting to see you went for the supplied paints and hand brushing. That is a very nice neat job. I goes to show what can be done with the materials supplied in the starter sets. A great looking P51
ChancerNW thanks! With a few extra tools and materials you can get a great finish 😊
One of my favorite airplane , Mustang P51D . Great work and details !
Thanks for watching :D
Same it was the most fun plane to build
Have you ever watched the channel Quick kits? He has some priceless tips which really helped me. Not only that, he brush paints everything. (However, he may be getting a Hasegawa Zero in the summer)
HowToCameron's younger brother. Yeah, I've been following and watching Owen for a few years now. He does have some good tips and tricks. He can also be quite approachable on Twitter if you need to ask him anything. Maybe one day I'll be as successful as him 😂. I e got an Airfix Zero in 1/72 in my stash somewhere, hopefully I'll find time to build it someday 🙈
The young man whose channel you recommended has not posted anything in 2 years. A real shame, as these two channels are very relatable. I think he had some challenges ... Just hope he is well enough one day to return.
Here's a tip for you. Instead of dipping the decals in the water is use a large flat brush and just dampen the decal on the cutting matt . It's better than chasing floating decals about and doesn't wash the decals glue away.
Thanks for the idea! :D
Good idea John. I use a new kitchen sponge cut to shape to fit in a container about the size of a sardine can. Put water in the container and then rest the decal on the damp sponge. Then apply decal as normal. I came across this technique on the website of AR Kits. (HO scale railway kits).
MM,Did you thin the paint before brushing it on?
Great video. You really helped me out with my kit. It was my first and I had no experience with anything of the sort
Thanks! I'm glad you found it helpful. If you check out my channel you might find some other helpful videos :)
Brilliant as always
Thanks! It's a pretty neat kit! :)
Excellent build..!
thanks!
Getting one tomorrow. First ever build, looks a good one to start on, but I only have what comes with the kit, nothing else.
You should be able to do OK with only the paints included
Good job dude!
Thanks! :)
Dear god the RAF paint scheme is so gorgeous
yeah, the RAF camo does make the mustang look good :)
Nice and straightforward. You might talk a bit about painting the canopy parts as they tend to be a particular bugaboo.
Thanks, perhaps i'll make a stand alone video on it :)
Very nice
Thanks!
Good useful video
Glad you found it helpful :)
Very cool
Thanks :)
im going to have to try to make this variant!!
Go for it!
Привет ! Я подписался на Ваш канал! Мне нравится,как Вы работаете ! Браво !👍
Thanks for stopping by! :)
@@ModelMinutes я из России !
Awesome!! We got a real international community going on :)
I painted the nose cone blue and well the aircraft I built probably is my second really good model
along with the spitfire
B-MAN 67 that sounds great!
I did mine red and this is probably one of my best builds along with the Messerschmitt Bf 109 Tropical.
I spent my youth making Airfix and Revell kits. Looking back though, the thing I hated most was the glue. I don’t know if things have improved from the 1970s and 80s but I seem to remember long and stringy spider webs of the stuff that got everywhere. If you put too much on it used to melt the plastic and the smell was an experience too. After two hours you were as high as a kite. Anyway you’ve done a great job with this one.
The glue (cement) is not so bad now - it seems milder in smell, and as you can see in the video it doesn't leave those long strings anymore. You can get extra thin cement now that you paint on with a brush - i'm hoping to get some soon :)
Model Minutes Ok thanks. I must admit that watching this makes me miss model making. I tend to buy the Corgi Diecast now but they aren’t cheap.
@@ModelMinutes the extra thin works by capillary action. It actually melts the plastic together forms a strong bond
Clear the kit before decals so they dont silver. Then matt afterwards to seal. Other than that great build.
I believe i did this during this build, but may have neglected to have mentioned it. This is one of my earlier build videos, so not as concise or polished as more recent ones
I just bought this plane yesterday...will be my first american plane of wwii
ARandomUA-camr awesome! Would love to see it when it's done :)
Model Minutes I will show it yeah
ARandomUA-camr awesome!
The radio mast on those kits is a weak point. I've built three and it is always tricky to remove the part without it snapping. I liked the tip about heating the knife when removing the small parts. I would have masked off & painted the yellow leading edge rather than use the decal.
Yes, in hindsight, masking and painting would have been much easier!
Razor saw is the proper tool for such thin parts
@@52down Yes but I didn't have one at the time. It is also a weak point in the tooling. The gate attaches half way up the mast, so sometime plastic has to be removed and sometimes there is a short shot.
This looks amazing! I made one of these a few days ago and I got similar results however yours looks a lot more detailed!, any tips on working with the camo pattern that most of these RAF ww2 planes have? (glad to see someone else who doesn't thin their paints)
work light to dark and just take your time I guess
did you only use the paint supplied in the starter kit? Or did you get some of your own? What paints are supplied in the base starter kit? Thanks
If I remember correctly (but could be wrong) you get 64, 106, 30 and 33 included. So I would have used some extra paint colours for various areas
Is it hard to build these and secondly is there a line or a guide to where you paint because i am a beginner in model kits and would like to get into it and what do you need for someone like me?
Difficulty can be subjective depending on the person, best thing to do would be to have a go 😊.
No, there aren’t marks to follow for the paint scheme as this aircraft could be painted in many other historical ways and moulding guides onto the model would ruin that
Edit: check my channel for more videos on tools that you might want to start modelling
Does a mat varnish physicals lock the decal into the model to stop it pelling of? Or is there a different reason?
Yes, it’s a protective layer, that and it makes the model have a more realistic appearance
@@ModelMinutes oh okay thank you very much
I love you ❤ (not a wierd way ;))
Lucky Me! :D
Did u thin the paint? And how do you apply the decal
I can’t remember off the top of my head, it should be mentioned in the video
Does the instrument panel have raised details or it's flat?
I believe (but can't entirely remember) that it has raised details, but that they are quite simple
Hello! How about setting decals? Was OK?
the decals were ok . . .
Hi
...what is that cool red pliers multi tool?
lol, i had to re-check the video to see what you were referring to. The tool with the red handles is simply a pair of side cutters. I placed my multi-tool on top of it for part of the build so that I knew where my tools were, but the multi-tool is not part of the snips.
I cant really remember where the multitool came from, I think it was gift. But it has some pliers, screwdriver attachments and a few other things
@@ModelMinutes oohhh, I see.
Looked like one unit to me.
Thanks for the videos, been watching a lot this week as just got back into modeling again :)
I am looking into getting into airfix modelling so I have purchased both the Cromwell and the mustang . I am a bit confused with how to thin the paints. Can I do it with water?
Provided the paints are acrylic, you can do it with water - it wont be as good as using a specialist thinner but it will help prevent brush strokes being visible in the paint finish.
If your paints are enamel you will need to use white spirit or a different specialist thinner - water will not work on this type of paint
Yeh thankyou, I would not know where to get specialist thinner considering the current situation so I just needed to know I could use water without ruining the paint. What type of paint are the starter pack ones?
@@adamphillips8676 starter paints are normally acrylic
Okay thanks for the help m8
You could use also some medium for thinning the acrilics, either Valleyio or Games Workshop these are the more used
thats good
Thanks!
@@ModelMinutes no problem
Can u put the landing gear up or do u have to either have it up or down cause I bought this model today its my first one
You can pick how you glue the landing gear, either up or down. Not many model kits have the option to make them moveable though because it’s too difficult to replicate in a small scale without them breaking
@@ModelMinutes ah thx im gonna put mine up cause i wanna play with it lol
Notification crewwww
Leothegamer Gotta love those notifications
I’m building this right now, I can’t get the wings on the fuselage.
perhaps you missed something in the instructions?
@@ModelMinutes nope, I got it, just a very very tight fit, i finished the whole aircraft and I’m super happy with the end result.
@@CaptKak1954 glad it worked out for you 😊
@@ModelMinutes thank you
Perhaps mask off and paint the leading edges yellow? Might be easier than faffing about with a long decal getting it straight /and/ folded over the leading edge.
that is indeed an option
Nice build ..but you could do to wash it first before painting .. all the grease and stuff on the plastic won't help the paint
Ian Johnson thanks! Yes, you're right, washing would help get rid of any dirt and mould release grease that is on the plastic. I've never really had a problem with the paint not sticking to the plastic without washing it, but it's a bad habit that I've stuck with. Hopefully in the future I'll be less lazy 😂
Currently building one very stressful 😲
I found the landing gear to be quite difficult - what are you struggling with?
Model Minutes Those yellow strips (decals)...
My mustang came with 2 fuselage sprues and no wings!
Oh no! Sounds like you need to email the Airfix spares department
I got a replacement at The Range
It looks great my dad likes it
Did it come with a pilot?
Yes, but I chose not to use it
How do you get the wheels to take the weight?
You have to be super careful when constructing the landing gear - if built right the aircraft should be supported, but the legs are somewhat thin and fiddly
This is the first aircraft I have done. Most of the bits set super fast. But the legs never seemed to set. I copied you turning it upside down and left it over night and it worked.
Peter Calvert I’m glad it worked for you! Sometimes some parts just take longer to set
It all seems a bit rushed but I like how you filmed the whole process. I think I put the tailwheel on when the fuselage went together when I built my P-51D. I don't think you mentioned the variable position radiator outlet. The undercarriage mounted headlight can be tricky to put in place sometimes too. I'd have just painted the yellow on the leading edge as those yellow decals seem too much bother, much like the orange ones on the Airfix Jet Provost Mk3. I'm glad you mentioned the aerial. Both the P-51D kits I've had of Airfix's new-tool have given me trouble removing the aerial part or it has been badly moulded. It is a bit reassuring to find it is a common fault.
Yeah - earlier videos on my channel are quite "Quick" - more recent ones go into more detail and are considerably longer. I've heard from a number of people that they struggled with the aerial, i've got a couple more P51s to build and i'm sure i'll have the same issue there. The wing decals were quite a fuss, but i managed to get there in the end. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video, i hope you'd be interested in checking out some of my more recent and better ones :)
I do wish that airfix made figure packs with pilots
yeah, that would be great
Their starter kits often feature a pilot and stand for wheels-up versions. What a great alternative for young modellers!
I'm building the Spitfire MkVc starter kit and the 1/48 Mustang - both have pilots. That's one thing that Airfix do better than other manufacturers - Tamiya, for all their engineering expertise, do not offer models that can be shown wheels-up, without some messy and fiddly work.
Bravo, Airfix.
Just painted mine and it seems really dark compared to the guide!!
Hmm, did you mix the paint properly? Sometimes the pigments can appear darker/lighter if they separate
@@ModelMinutes I stired them and thinned them with water (something I’ve never done before!) it looks ok just dark!!
@@welshwaffs Sometimes the paints don't quite match the colour guide - if you watch my BF109 i built recently, the paints don't really match at all
I watched this video over and over until I finally found one myself. Does anyone know how to avoid brush strokes I still haven’t got a airbrush yet?
Maybe just put maybe more coats or just paint in one direction.
Angel JoJo thanks
Thinning the paint helps too
Model Minutes thanks:)
How long is this
The video or the plane?
Plane is about 140mm in length
And there is a timer on the video
@@ModelMinutes ok thanks it was for the plane
@@ModelMinutes Also is this suitable for a beginner
@@Aston1356 well, it came as a starter set so it’s aimed at beginners…
There might be a few things that are a bit hard but generally it’s one of the easier kits
@@ModelMinutes ok thankypu
I have this set but lost the instruction booklet:( can anyone send a picture of theirs?😂
It’s on scalemates www.scalemates.com/products/img/4/3/7/1253437-79-instructions.pdf
Model Minutes thanks so much
12 hours to build? damn
yeah, sometimes they take a while, but most of that time was probably waiting for the paint to dry
@@ModelMinutes yeah i had a feeling because you usually need to wait for the paint to dry
hello
Hi!
Is there a person in this set?
A pilot is included in the kit, but I chose not to include it
@@ModelMinutes did you wash the parts in warm soapy water?
No, i don't believe i did for this kit, but i have in more recent models
@@ModelMinutes oh I thought you need to.
It's recommended as it can help remove any oil or grease on the plastic, but i've never had a problem with the kits without washing them
I don't know friend. You're a good modeler but I think you rushed this Mustang. Didn't thin the paint adequately, I see too many brushstrokes. Please take your time! :-)
Thanks for watching! Yes, maybe I rushed it a little, but i've learnt a lot since this video was made over a year ago :P
£5 at Aldi
all sold out at any Aldi i've been too
Hard to view. Very fast playback. Useless video.
yes, being one of my older videos i've learnt a lot on how to present and edit them - you should look at my more recent uploads
