2:40 Did y'all know that according to most formal (and legal) definitions, a _flippin' _*_Linear Regression_* is considered AI? Not a joke-AI literally pre-dating computers, and if you limit your definition to what _most people_ agree is AI, then you've merely limited the range to when "computers" had names like "Mary," "Katherine" and "Augusta."
The thing is, some people say that stuff like image classification and other deep learning methods don’t count as AI, or that anything short of literal human intelligence is not AI. the best of the best used to be a symbolic model which used facts about the world to infer new knowledge using only logical rules and relationships. We would hardly call that smart nowadays, but of course it was AI back in the day. In the future, I’d imagine some even question if stuff like gpt4 should be considered AI. I guess what I’m saying is the meaning shifts over time, and that makes it hard to keep legal definitions accurate since the connotation changes all the time
yep, and all of Mathematics and Statistics is now called AI. I never believed in my life time someone would be able to market mathematics and actually make money with it.
Very true. I remember in my university AI course, we spent weeks on the advanced path search/ permutation algorithms and many of the students were very disappointed that something like Google Maps directions is AI that they had to study. AI is a much wider topic than ML though many conflate the two
The moment a human realized some sort of productivity could be automated without 1 to 1 supervision is honestly how I view the start of AI. Certainly precedes the Turing test or “Expert System” programmable computers of the 1940s. We called it programming for a while, but that was just a way of describing our ability to automate systems and models of reality.
