I know you didn’t intend to do this video separately but it turned out fantastic this way. It was so incredibly sweet to see you “interacting” with each other while being apart. Claire’s expressions, and how Ross speaks of Claire, is absolutely endearing. I’m so happy for you both to have found one another ❤️
I genuinely enjoyed this; Ross is such a natural in front of the camera and I appreciate the effort he put into this! I really can see how your personalities match so seamlessly. Also, Aglaonema Fireworks is at the top of my wishlist now. The leaves are absolutely unreal!
The fly traps and sarracenia should be kept in bog like conditions so having the pot in a saucer of water is completely appropriate! Old flytraps will turn black as they die, it’s normal. If there is new growth happening it should be in good shape. Both of those plants need super high light! A very sunny windowsill or strong grow light will help them thrive! Best of luck with all of them 😊
I'm pretty sure that the reason Ross' Jade plant looks different from yours is because he has got himself a Crassula Ovata Minima 😊 They have smaller leaves than a regular Crassula Ovata 😉
That calathea is doing amazing! My sister once owned a calathea for all if THREE HOURS before she gave it to my mum because it was stressing her out 😂 On the blue vs green plant front - you probably just see a different range of blue/ green in the colour spectrum. We most commonly do this with blue/ green more that any other colours. I'm with Ross - they're green 😂 You two might argue over yellow vs green, and blue vs purple too! My dissertation was on how we see and respond to colour - its such a magical thing!
Fantastic video with two extraordinarily natural hosts - and Joli! I love how this turned out with you commenting as Ross so sweetly described his collection! I love that he's into Spider Man and LOTR especially! I name my plants for characters all the time. 😅 You two are great together! More please! (I still need to watch the Ross Moved In video and many more) Wishes for a joyful, prosperous, love-filled, and planty New Year!
I relate so much to Ross right now! Wait. . . I'm not killing plants? Tell me I'm not killing plants. They don't seem to be dying. 🤔 Addiction unlocked!
My venus flytrap also died back after flowering, I think it's quite normal. Mine bounced back in a few weeks and I've had it a few years now. Some people chop off the flower stems as soon as they appear to prevent them taking all the energy. I also bottom water mine with distilled water once of twice a week during the summer and less during the winter, and yes, they are very fussy about the water, use distilled or rain water.
Ross is a natural! Well done! 🏆 Claire, you must be so proud!💚And your censoring is on point! 😆 On the tradescantia, I think it's actually a Calissia Repens and you don't even need to bother with propping them in water. Just put the cuttings straight into the soil and they will root and grow like mad almost immediately! Higher light for better color and tight growth; and even though it's considered a succulent it prefers a little more water. Doesn't want to dry out for too long. 👍
My mind is blown by how lush "Freddie" Calathea Ornata is! The Ornata is one of the most difficult Calathea and I couldn't imagine taking that one on when I started, but he's done incredibly well 👏
Yeah I agree about fittonias needing a lot of water/humidity! The roots are extremely fine. Usually if it gets too dry, it will wilt like that but perks back up as soon as you water it.
What a fun video! You had asked for some feedback. This feels weird because you have way more knowledge and experience with plants than I do but I do have a pretty happy Fittonia. I keep her pretty much the same as my prayerplants/calathea. I don't let the soil dry out, I try to not let the humidity drop below 55-60%, bright indirect light, bla bla. But they are drama queens and will "faint" when they're thirsty and perk up within an hour of being watered. But I also have very happy prayers plants pushing out multiple leaves every week and I keep my Fittonia nestled in with them and it's happy too. I use grow lights and a humidifier and only distilled water with them. They are extremely spoiled lol. Also about the venus fly trap. That's an entirely different animal. They actually do need moist/wet substrate all the time. And they can't handle anything but distilled or rain water on their roots. I keep mine in 50/50 coco coir and sphagum moss with a very shallow water resevoir of distilled water and never let it dry out. Never give them fertilizer. They can't handle any minerals or anything extra. They come from North Carolina USA in marshes with no nutrients. They get their 'fertilizer' from the bugs they "eat". The science behind it all is very interesting. But his is flowering so it must be doing well. However some of those heads could be dying from using tap water. Also, if it "dies" in the winter, don't throw it out. They do go dormant, and actually need about 3-5 months rest every year. UK winters will be perfect for them . But go ahead and let them get cold and you can stick them by a north facing window and forget about them over winter. They still need some water to not actually die, but in their natural habitat they spend part of the winter frozen and they look completely dead but they come back in the spring. There's tons of videos on UA-cam about them. I just did what they said to mine and it's still alive and I repeated it here. I'm no expert. Anyways sorry for the novel. Much love to you both! :)
Ross, you almost fooled me but you didn't introduce Yollie! LOL! Sorry to hear you've both been sick. I can completely relate to the spider plant issue! Last year - in addition to candy (I'm not an animal!) I passed baby plants out to the kids to give to their mom's. Now I've taken to bundling the babies with a tiny hair band and setting them in my Beta fish's house while they grow roots! No one is safe!! 😂
Ross's venus flytrap is most likely dying back either due to lack of light (carnivorous plants need a lot of light, especially flytraps) or water quality. A lot of carnivorous plants (especially the ones indoors) have evolved to grow in nutritionless, waterlogged soil due to being bog plants. The roots are practically immune to rotting from bacteria, and the only issue that may come from the roots is either root damage from travelling, or root burn from nutrition in the soil.
Ross!!! 🎉 Ahahahaha I'm totally here for more of him on the channel and as always Claire but also your relationship journey! He also cracks me up!! That intro interpretation 😂🤣😂 you sound great though Claire no need to change a thing! It's like a theme song to a TV show the same is great and comforting. 🤗 I appreciate you so much I've learned sooo much from you to get to my 80 plants now! 🥰🌿💚 Can I also call the first relationship quibble is going to be about when you move in together and you are determined to keep his pink and colorful plants out of your carefully curated green and silver variegations 🤣😂🤣
The carnivorous plants should stand in water but it has to be rain or distilled water (I only use rain water for mine). I always cut flowers back as soon as they appear as they can kill the plant all together but at best, a lot will die back. With high sunlight, the plants can grow quite large. Growth will be more stunted in low light. They also need to be over wintered. They need a dormancy period over the winter. Being put somewhere cooler and darker and kept damp with daily spraying, rather than standing in water. They are fussy but well worth the effort. Such fun plants. I love that Ross has now caught the house plant bug!
I always love your videos and your intro is the best! Don’t change it please 🙏🏾 you’re so lucky to be able to get your SO into plants! I got mine a vanilla orchid for his birthday and he’s afraid of it 😂 lovely video and as always thank you for sharing!!
Totally agree! I grow sundews and sarracenia in a vase in a constant puddle of rain water, sun sun sun and use special carnivorous plant soil (without any nutrition)
Both carniverous plants need lots of sun, a consistently moist soil, rainwater/distilled or reverse osmosis water (basically very soft water without minerals) and a dormancy period. Best to keep them outside in full sun even in winter. That traps die is normal, they only last a few times opening and closing, and it has new traps forming so that is good. Dont throw them out if they look worse in autumn and winter, they will get back, think of them as herbacious perennials
37:10 I would say it could be callisia, not tradescantia. I had issues with her, but since I started to water it from the bottom it is much better. All the best to both of you! 💚
What a great video Ross is so much fun. Ross you are doing really, really well with your plant babies! From 1 to 23 is good going in 8 months 😂. That Calathea is amazing I can’t keep one alive for love nor money lol.
For venus fly traps and sarracenia, it is fine to absolutely soak them in water. As long as the water doesn't contain too much mineral content they won't rot. My sarracenia is currently sitting in water up to half of the height of the pot and they are absolutely loving it. They do however need a LOT of lights to thrive. My is next to a east facing window and I run a Pianta grow light for 14 hours a day just for it
I have a Venus Fly Trap and have been quite successful in keeping mine! 😊 Some tips for you: - distilled water is life - pick a substrate with low nutrients (eg: Sphagnum moss, perlite, peat moss, etc.) - keep the plant in a dish and keep the dish full of distilled water at all times (kinda like not letting a semi-hydro resivoir dry out) - lots and looooots of light! - Lastly, they definitely appreciate more humidity and will thrive in a terrarium, or cloche 😊 These are what's worked for me and I've kept mine thriving, sunstressed and flowering for almost a year now! I even pollinated it when it flowered and got seeds! 😆🥳
Re: the venus fly trap...it is ok to be sat in water, mine are sat in 1.5cm of water constantly and I keep it topped up and I do only give mine rain water. Traps can just die off do I snip off any black bits and I'd snip the flower off 🙂
I stopped keeping Fittonia plants because they're so fussy. I did find they did very well if I cut a large plastic Pop bottle in half, upturning it over the plant (keep the cap on!) They also do great in bottle gardens too (you don't see them much now). I think it's because they don't like moving draughts and do best in still, humid environments. They're easily overwatered, so wait until they droop a bit : )
Really great and entertaining video! Ross is such a hoot! My house is like Ross's apt.....dark, dark, dark ! I have lots of the same plants you do, but they are generally kept outside since I live in florida. I set up a popup greenhouse outside for the winter which really doesn't last too long. But I have discovered grow lights which are allowing me to have more plants inside. Thanks for all the information you share!
I think water propagation might be the way to go with monstera standleyana! I got cuttings from the Edinburgh plant swap, I propagated them in water and they’re rooted enough to be potted up now. The leaves haven’t curled up either, they’re still super healthy!
29:44 I would highly recommend distilled water. I don’t have a sun trap but I grow Sundews. The other weird thing about the carnivorous plants is sometimes they push flowers when they’re stressed. Just be very gentle with the tap roots, maybe even refresh it’s soil and moss. Then use a much shallower tray. It’s totally good if you let the tray dry out even some of the soil dry out from time to time! OH and if you don’t have bugs… get bugs!!
What a lovely video ❤. In regards of blue plants - i have an oil slick fern (Microsorum thailandicum), dark green with a blue shimmer. So yes, they exist 😊
The Mexicanum is the best! I got mine as a one leaf cutting. It felt like it to an eternity to root but once it did it really took off. My leaves have matured without a moss pole but it finally got so out of control that I had to stake it. A very good score. 😊
Thank you for sharing Ross collection. Loved this video. And i like that he is also a Star Wars Fan and Van Gogh too. Also that popular Japan Artwork. 😃My son got excited when heard Spider man he is a big fan. We recently went to Comic Con and he wore Miles Morales this year. 😊
I have had my fitonia for over a year now pretty successfully and I think the biggest care tip would be to keep it in a location where you will frequently see it, and near some sort of sink so you remember to water it.
His jack skellington impression got me 😍 Calathea looks awesome, they do love semi hydro too, if you wanna check that out ☺️ Regarding the fittonia: they are epiphytes/lithophytes so they do love a well draining soil. I keep mine in mid light place and water very frequently. Also I wouldn’t repot the store bought ones bc their roots are very delicate. Rather take top cuttings and let them root in water ☺️
This is an old video, but I have a thriving fittonia! She needs water OFTEN and if she goes approximately 7 seconds too long without water she dramatically wilts. The key is figuring out when she needs water right before she wilts. Mine is right beside a southwest facing window!
My Fittonia does well outside of a terrarium- my general humidity is mid 60s in the house, its about 2 meters back from south facing french doors & I water when the leaves don't feel full and are soft ❤
I had fittonia a few years back, and I used it to carpet the bottom of my crested geckos vivarium.. it was planted in there with a bromeliad and a snake plant i believe and it did really really well. I think it's definitely a plant for vivs in my opinion as they get regular misting, high humidity, and lots of light from the bulbs used for reptiles.
For the fittonia / nerve plant. I own quite a few of them and ive found best way to grow them is in bathrooms just because of the really high humidity. But overall like Ross said, any way to keep the humidity in with them they will thrive and love. But definitely humidity and light are the main ones with them (based on what ive found with mine)
Love my philodendron Mexicanium. Would recommend putting it on a coir stake. Mine is massive, so massive that I can no longer move it by myself. I put him on a 90cm pole about 8 months ago and I am going to have to extend it after his next leaf pops.
So fun to see Ross’s collection, and how does he do so well with that Calathea!? (Mine has a few crispy edges; maybe it needs more frequent & small watering’s…🤔 Go Ross!
I have a few fittonias, I have them in my window and bottom water them with about an inch of water a week. I have found that if you let it dry beyond that they shrivel up and don’t bounce back
I had fitionia. She likes very humid conditions only way she was fine with me was when I kept her in the shower. She died, the leaves were completely dry and I was about to throw her away when I noticed perfectly healthy stems. I put her in the bathroom window moved her in the evening into the shower and then moved back on the windowsill she was thriving but I got rid of her as she was pain anyway. Too much for me, sometimes I kept forgetting and she was too dramatic to care :D
i had a big nerve plant (in like an 8"-10" pot?) that did amazing for like a year until I left it to go on vacation for for a couple weeks... it lived hanging by my bathroom window, in the shower and i watered it much more often than my other plants. so my advice is just figure out where the most humid place in your house is, put it there by a window or a light, and water it as soon as it starts to get droopy. i always waited until it told me it needed water to avoid over watering the thing. after i died back, i threw the surviving bits in a take out container with a lid and its slowing growing back into a little bush again :) btw i think venus fly traps are bog plants? not sure
I'm going to look for a house that will suit my plants' needs better! I got into plants in this house and the lighting is TERRIBLE so I can't wait to buy a house with windows everywhere. I love that you and Ross are doing more videos together. You two seem so fun!
What a coincidence, my first plant was also a kentia palm! I water mine twice a week and mist it daily. It's doing great and it recently gave me a ton of new growth, but I still get brown tips. It's probably normal. I don't think I've ever seen one without them.
Maybe you can use your sticky tags and make labels for Ross so he can learn the names😂. He seems to “want” to know 😊. ❤how you two interact with one another ❤🌸
I have the Trads plant. It is so huge this year it is in a 20 gallon pot outside. I have split it twice plus cuttings. The love outside not direct light. Mine are massive. I bring inside in the winter.
I know you didn’t intend to do this video separately but it turned out fantastic this way. It was so incredibly sweet to see you “interacting” with each other while being apart. Claire’s expressions, and how Ross speaks of Claire, is absolutely endearing. I’m so happy for you both to have found one another ❤️
I think it would be super fun to watch you and Ross do a repot and chat together someday!
I’ll vote for that!
I will too 👍
Me too
Me too!
He is absolutely adorable, a keeper for sure. So delightful and funny. He seems to genuinely enjoys his plants.
I genuinely enjoyed this; Ross is such a natural in front of the camera and I appreciate the effort he put into this! I really can see how your personalities match so seamlessly.
Also, Aglaonema Fireworks is at the top of my wishlist now. The leaves are absolutely unreal!
Great to see Ross again. He represents many of us who are new to the plant game. Not only that, he's fun!
The fly traps and sarracenia should be kept in bog like conditions so having the pot in a saucer of water is completely appropriate! Old flytraps will turn black as they die, it’s normal. Yes to this. I keep both of mine in water constantly just as they were at the nursery I bought them from.
Claire looking at Ross is soo cute! Bravo les amoureux❤
I'm pretty sure that the reason Ross' Jade plant looks different from yours is because he has got himself a Crassula Ovata Minima 😊 They have smaller leaves than a regular Crassula Ovata 😉
I agree
He is so supportive and I am here for it!! 👏🏻👏🏻🪴
Ross is adorable and a keeper. Enjoy each other and the plant journey. Yes, updates for sure.
One of my favorites! I am so glad you filmed your input along with the video!

This was fun. Ross is hilarious trying to talk about his plant babies.
Anyways sorry for the novel. Much love to you both! :)

Absolutely loved Ross's tour! He is such a character!😄
It was so sweet watching your face as you were watching Ross. I could almost see the love. ❤
Ross's venus flytrap is most likely dying back either due to lack of light (carnivorous plants need a lot of light, especially flytraps) or water quality.

Big fan of the name choices 😂
Defenitely naming my marble queen Aragorn from now on, love it!
Love that intro he did. I always laugh at your extra long Claire. 😂
Ross!!! 🎉 Ahahahaha I'm totally here for more of him on the channel and as always Claire but also your relationship journey! He also cracks me up!!

did Ross make the thumbnail? LMAO great video. Hilarious!

I think if she changed her intro, I would be really sad. I have like a Pavlov response to the music and the intro.
Ross is right constant water is what they need. I have lots of them. I keep them I about an inch or so of rain water. They love the sun too

I love getting to know you better Ross

Great watching Ross show off his plants!
I love pink plants too. Fireworks is beautiful!
Fabulous video I watched at work had to stop half the way through to work. I couldn’t wait till break to return to watching it. So much fun.
I have had my fitonia for over a year now pretty successfully and I think the biggest care tip would be to keep it in a location where you will frequently see it, and near some sort of sink so you remember to water it.
Lovely video! So glad Ross is getting the bug too. Wishing you a happy moving in together 🤩
This is the most adorable thing! The way you look at him and the way he got interested in your hobby 😭 I wish my husband and I could be like this 😭😅
Ross is the funniest 😂❤
His jack skellington impression got me 😍
Calathea looks awesome, they do love semi hydro too, if you wanna check that out ☺️
Regarding the fittonia: they are epiphytes/lithophytes so they do love a well draining soil. I keep mine in mid light place and water very frequently. Also I wouldn’t repot the store bought ones bc their roots are very delicate. Rather take top cuttings and let them root in water ☺️
Omg love you and Ross together! He's super fun loving❤
You're accent is so Downton Abbey! I love it!
"Encouraging drinking on my channel! Honestly!" 😆🤣
Well Ross great job! You are ahead of me on many of these. Try an African Violet. You will love the leaves. pink and purple underneath.
We love your intro, though Ross' was a nice parody! The blind react was so good too! Awesome!
Claire - how many times during this video did you go “Yep, ladies and gentlemen… that’s my man!” 😂 love it Ross keep up the good work!
We love Ross ❤❤❤
I have a few fittonias, I have them in my window and bottom water them with about an inch of water a week. I have found that if you let it dry beyond that they shrivel up and don’t bounce back
This was both funny and sweet. I enjoyed the tour.👏🏽
Too much for me, sometimes I kept forgetting and she was too dramatic to care :D
the beginning was hilarious 😂❤
Yes blue plants exist. Check out the blue oil fern and I think you'll agree.
i had a big nerve plant (in like an 8"-10" pot?) that did amazing for like a year until I left it to go on vacation for for a couple weeks... it lived hanging by my bathroom window, in the shower and i watered it much more often than my other plants. so my advice is just figure out where the most humid place in your house is, put it there by a window or a light, and water it as soon as it starts to get droopy. i always waited until it told me it needed water to avoid over watering the thing. after i died back, i threw the surviving bits in a take out container with a lid and its slowing growing back into a little bush again :)
btw i think venus fly traps are bog plants? not sure
I'm going to look for a house that will suit my plants' needs better! I got into plants in this house and the lighting is TERRIBLE so I can't wait to buy a house with windows everywhere.
I love that you and Ross are doing more videos together. You two seem so fun!
This is the most adorable video. I hope I find this someday 🥰
❤how you two interact with one another ❤🌸
This was great! Thanks for sharing the laughs.
How adorable. Truly loved this.
Any man with a Starry nights cushion, has to be a good man.
That’s facts , & I loved this content 🔥
And he quoted Nightmare Before Christmas…. 🔥🔥
Yay. ❤😂🎉 Been waiting for this houseplant tour.
I have the Trads plant. It is so huge this year it is in a 20 gallon pot outside. I have split it twice plus cuttings. The love outside not direct light. Mine are massive. I bring inside in the winter.
