I believe that UK bands at the time had a more modern sound than their US counterparts. My dad Sam used to dance to bands like this in the late 1920s to the 30s.
~ *Timestamps* ~ 0:00 - "I May Be Wrong" 1930 voc: Sam Browne 2:50 - "Why Can't You?" 1929 voc: Sam Browne 6:11 - "She's Such a Comfort to Me" 1929 voc: Sam Browne
Sensational British dance bands of the 30s! Near peerless! However, even though Jack Hylton here was in that class, for me the best of them all was Carroll Gibbons and the Savoy Hotel Orpheans. Truly sweet sounds and listenable at any time, anywhere.
Sensational! Overall, my favorite has to be "I May Be Wrong," because this is such a spiffy treatment of one of my favorite tunes, but the arrangement and solos on "She's Such A Comfort To Me," too, are superb.
I asked my Bubbie over the phone, "do you remember that song "I may be wrong" by Nicholas"... And she immediately said "yes!", Excitedly (which was a joy to hear) And then even more joyously We sang the song together "I may be wrong but..... I think you're wonderful.... I may be wrong but...." And she sang, "I think you're grand." I'm not sure if that's the lyric or if it's only "swell" but still all the other words (that she sang) were right. I'm so happy and grateful that there's songs like this I can hear That are not only great, and make me think my own psychedelic thoughts But I can also use it to share wonderful memories with my grandmother And remind her of past joys that she hasn't thought of in decades. To do that is one of the greatest things in life.
Thank you for your comment, although, I must confess that despite being very literary, fully aware of the protocols and principles of grammar, understanding of the delicacy of context, and completely versed in the rules, styles, habits, techniques, and provincialisms (local color, patois, vernacular, and idiomatic idiosyncrasies) of syntax and punctuation, I nevertheless do not understand the meaning of the ellipsis in your sentence.
@@andrewsiegel2950 ....hey, I'd hate to meet you in a dark alley, and be assaulted with context and patois. That disturbing ellipsiation is my own personal suggestion of a continuation of your thoughts. It is patented, so don't let me find you borrowing it!
Delightful selection . Sam stated in a 1960's doc " Sam Browne Remembers " (sadly deleted) that he loved his time with this band but lengthy European tours just wore him out and he was happy to accept an offer from Bert Ambrose .
I remember that documentary on youtube and wonder why it was taken off. He seemed such a likeable, down to earth man and not affected with stardom at all. A better role model than others.
So, what’s not to like about this combination? Jack Hylton and Sam Browne made some timeless records together. Their treatment of Oscar Levant’s “My Dream Memory” is without doubt the best recording of that classic. Hylton’s late ‘20s and early ‘30s Band was fantastic and Browne rates with Al Bowlly any day in my book!
No, not really. He was a top band singer in his day, as far as I'm concerned, but Al Bowlly had more than that. Not just singing lyrics, learned off. An emotional quality that many others couldn't get. And it is important in selling a song.
Now on 9/24/2021 they are up to about 9100; it takes awhile to build up. You need to consider this music is 100 years old and just a beautiful as ever!!
Perfect as it is. Somehow, a perfect reproduction would be out of place with a recording made in Nineteen Twenty Nine. Hylton and his musos could play underwater and I'd love the sound.
From Mark Hogan found this wonderful post and I am not wrong great arrangement and singer. Found Friday 9/18/2020. The second song is on youtube with Ethel Shutta singing it with her husband's orchestra. Great arrangement!!! I once visited his hotel (LOL) HILTON. Rated very highest 16 reserved for the very best posts!!! In numerology 1+6=7 which is great number
This song should be featured in the upcoming "Downton Abbey II" movie. It fits the theme since the movie is supposed to feature the Crawleys and Downton staffs in 1929.
You could hear this music live if you had the proper instruments like a tuba, cymbals, a piano or a harpsicord and all the other old instruments and maybe a recorder or a record to record on.
Agan, what a wonderful song and bad. In 2023 still great.
I believe that UK bands at the time had a more modern sound than their US counterparts.
My dad Sam used to dance to bands like this in the late 1920s to the 30s.
Yes, they were ahead of their time by almost ten years.
I find their arrangements are sweeter and more melodious! Great bands!
My father could dance to these tunes
Amen
I love these old tunes, the bands and the crooners with their beautiful voices.
Straordinaria eccellenza..2023
....thank you!
The BRITS were SMASHING and SENSATIONAL!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐😍
YES
Can’t argue with that!
We still have our moments!
La mejor orquesta de los 30. Inolvidable

Great as always! Merci beaucoup from Paris France 😂! Emmanuel 🌳
....thank you!
These were three great vocals from Sam Brown's repertoire and Jack Hylton's band made a great combination.
The sounds they made! And that piano, so bubbly and effervescent.
Effervescent for my Mom and Dad and their love of music, well, I simply would not be here, period.
One of my favourite Hyltons from my favourite year music wise."Just You Just Me" and "Ro Ro Rolling Along " are both excellent too.
Thank you, a gem. Best wishes from Amsterdam.

truthfully
I want to recreate this in the 21st century. We need this.
Btw I'd love to have a hall rented with music like this playing and have a dance. Wonder if anyone would come?
I think they would. First, largely out of novelty and then later out of being taken with how alive and dance friendly this music is.
Absolutely! Send me the address!
I certainly would 😄.
I will be the first guest..
I wish someone could teach me how to dance to this music.

Gavin Millar I guess that his musical and emotional reliability are why he was used for so many hundreds of sides.

I agree totally! Often I have thought that Sam Browne had that edge on Al Bowlly. I agree that the Hylton band of the pre-Decca years was sparkling.

Nice stuff!!!!
I'm thinking a foxtrot would be lovely for these songs.
Lovely music
I think that HIS MASTER'S VOICE Records would be to the BRITS, what VICTOR Records were to the AMERICANS (U.S.A.)

Both have Nipper in common.
I hope some day I can hear this music live!
Post Modern Juke Box do some of these kind of songs. Not the same but they make an effort.
Start your own band bro
