In a quiet university town, Sherlock Holmes confronts a crime that threatens to destroy more than just academic reputations. As he investigates the theft of crucial examination papers, Holmes uncovers a web of ambition, desperation, and long-buried secrets. With each clue-a scrap of clay, a peculiar pencil, a torn leather surface-the great detective inches closer to a truth that will challenge his notions of justice and redemption. In "The Adventure of the Three Students," Holmes must solve not just a crime, but a moral conundrum that strikes at the heart of privilege, integrity, and the price of success.
We read out a classic detective story every week.
I'm not generally a commentater but would like to say that, while I love your narrations (particularly the British stories), what I most enjoy is the didactic chat afterwards. I know this story very well, so I confess I skipped straight to the afterword and was genuinely thrilled to find you had devoted half an hour to it. It sets you apart from most other readers on the youtubes (Greg Wagland and his 'I digress' series being the only other example I can think of). Very pleased to hear you can make some sort of living out of it now - I look forward to your future offerings.
Very nice of you to say that . For a long time I had people pushing back against it. i understand that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and that many just want the stories but i enjoy learning and thinking about them
Thanks, Tony I really enjoyed this story and commentary
Is a bummer to realize you know by heart every "Arthur Conan Doyle" Sherlock Holmes story in existence and that there aren't any more. I envy those who are just discovering them.
I love Sherlock Holmes+ Jeremy Brett is Holmes for me visually with his mannerisms, just excellent I also preferred David Burke as DR Watson although Edward Hardwick was also good,Burke was just more jolly, also loved the Watson to Basil Rathbone's Holmes, sorry I knew you probably meant in literature terms
It is tobacco. Sherley’s mastermind cat. Is tobacco.
Faber/Castelle for all Commonwealth school pencils .
Sb for drawing Hb for notation.
You read well. Cheers🎉
Read some of his non Holmes stories. Then explore other British authors. The best are all written by female authors until they all fall for marrying off their lead detectives or marrying them themselves
I’m like that with ACD and Agatha Christie. Rats.
No, I thought Brett was great
I've loved Sherlock Holmes stories for as long as I can remember & it's a joy to hear your narration. I've never heard anyone discuss the Author & method of writing though, fascinating. Many thanks again.
Excellent narration, Tony. Thank you. Always enjoy your comments after the story.
Thanks again!
If only Tony Walker narrated all audiobooks *sigh*. He is one of the best IMHO 💙
He has a velvety timber that is so pleasant.
Yes a great timber.
@@JamesGower-ch5zj You probably mean timbre :)
@@SunnySmile-fr5yg Yes, unless inferring that the performance sounds wooden. Ha ha.
He isn't very good at Holmes. Sounds like he is in slow motion.
You are soo! Right about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are perfect as they are. That's what I love about them. Great commentary. Story sells it's itself, because of Sherlock, and Watson. More please!
I'd love it if you read obscure vintage crime stories but the market will decide.
I look forward to your readings of Miss Marple.
You are one of a kind Tony, thanks for entertaining us.
if i read those I’ll have to go back to work full time I am
guessing
@@classicdetective you're right and that's the last thing we want.
So if it's to be sherlock and marple so be it.
I solved it as soon as I read the description LoL
The butler did it!
(Not really 😂)
I love hard boiled. I'l listen to anything you post. But for now I get my fix by listening to old radio broadcasts of phillip marlow and sam spade. There are a few youtube channels that post them.
Hey! We're not lazy here in the US. Our villains also have asian and arabic accents ... admittedly not many Canadians.
Haha, love your commentary. Although I must say the Terminator does indeed go trough a major character arc. Starting as a ruthless killer, ending up the lovable protector who's death breaks your heart.
Fair enough :))
It took me a while to warm up to your post-story chats, but now I really enjoy them. And the dramatic outro made me laugh out loud. Thanks Tony!
Glad you like them!
Such a calming read n loved the mystery
Is there a reason why you stopped putting the title in the ...well, the title? I feel like these more "clickbaity" titles are a definitive downgrade...
Yes . to get more clicks ! Putting the title is so 2023
@@classicdetective Well, to be honest, it makes me way less likely, to click, choosing instead a story that I know what it is. Maybe you could add the title as well? Clickbait feels so dishonest, even when there is no deception involved in it, due to how it's been used.
@@ClockworkChainsawthe title is there though
@@ClassicGhost Not in the video title or the preview image?
it is there though. just for comparison the click through rate for the normal titles is about 3% whereas for this one it’s 4%.
Love your discussions at the end!
thank you
Love your narrations. You have a wonderful voice.
Thanks for listening. You are very nice
* Read by, Tony Walker.
I ❤ the haunting intro music 🎵🎶. I do so enjoy this narrator. Thank you 😊
My pleasure!
Always love a good Sherlock Holmes story 🕵♂️
On another note, my husband has just bought me 3 of your books so I'm really looking forward to reading those!
I played them this morning 🌅
I listened to the story part at 1.25 speed and I didn't even notice it was sped up. It just sounded normal.
ha ha
Wonderful
Thank you
I disagree strongly about the character arc being a relatively recent product of American self-improvement narratives. A character arc is essentially a hero's journey, the idea that the experiences narrated must leave a mark on the soul: begin by defying fate, come to accept it and die in peace; begin as a seemingly good person and end up corrupt, etc. If you look at Shakespeare's tragedies, classic Russian, German etc. literature, classic films, like "Twelve Angry Men", - there's always a character arc. Even TV series have character arcs - think L and Steve in "Stranger Things".
Short stories and serials that feature reappearing characters are different because those characters must be frozen in time to provide continuity. That's why neither Poirot, nor Holmes, nor any others can be expected to have character arcs. Those stories are case studies, kind of, not an exploration of the hero's journey.
I also disagree about modern crap like "Rings of Power". Those things are crap precisely because the characters are presented as these all-round aces that are brilliant at everything (Rey, modern-day Galadriel etc.), so there's zero personal development and therefore zero arc.
Thanks for your comment
The click bait title is beneath you
only 4 likes ???
Thank you!!!!
You're welcome!
Nice voice but the noise gate you've got on the audio is annoying as hell!
Sorry but a tiny touch of reverb would make all the difference IMHO...
thanks for your advice. i don’t gate it but i think it’s the expander you can hear
Thanks Tony. Your voice and style is so good. I hope you get really ambitious and do authors like Iris Murdoch
If i can get permission
@@classicdetective Damn the law if it stands between your artistry and my listening pleasure.
@@TinyflypieWe should ask Iris 😊
