    This video was filmed in July or August of 2023. It snowed here today.

    I gave two tree’s, Pastilliere and Feather River three years to be productive, both failed even on the third year. I got rid of both trees because of the issues you stated. Thanks for making your point. I wasted time and fertilizer to see these two trees be unproductive. They were both in the sunniest spot of my fig orchard. Not only did Pastilliere drop, the fruit was very small. I have other varieties that were more productive and better quality fruit.

      Source matters. There is a source of Pastiliere that's actually the Unk and isn't common.

    I am dying to try this fig, but its a slow fruiter. I've already had 2 or 3 seasons of UNK Pastiliere, but yet to see much from the og Pastiliere. Which do you prefer Ross, and how would you compare the flavors? By the color I imagine it tastes like a much better VdB, but can't wait to experience it for myself firsthand.

    Thanks for the video Ross. I have a cutting growing nicely called unknown pastiliere (I’m sure I spelled that wrong). Do you know what the “unknown” part is? Does that mean unknown source?

    Ross, where did you source. I see you're out and I'm only looking for the common version like you have. Thanks.

      Raintree is a good source. Problem is.. it took me 2 years to fruit it to realize it was mislabeled.

      @@RossRaddi What did you buy it as? And, did they realize they made a mistake and now call it Pastiliere. I'm confused on the reply.

      @@C3Voyage They have the real Pastiliere. The question is with most nurseries, are you sure you're getting the right variety?

      @@RossRaddi I'm a year in, and I'm realizing that's true most sources especially Facebook and even Figbid. For example, I'm seeing about 20 different Adriatics and they're all green with red interior and taste like strawberry. Lord. I can't believe they're all different when people are mislabeling, misidentifying, or aren't sure. Plus, taste is often affected by the environment where grown. Figs are also not inbred enough for a definitive final product. They're all variations of unfinished hybrids and vegetatively propagated. If they were inbred, or progeny of highly inbred parents, seeds could be grown and sold. It means that at times, some semi-dominant genes will express in certain environments as hormones are often affected by other influences like heat, cold, and amount of daylight hours for example. I've actually settled to just go with whatever folks say; lots of "unknowns" out there. Were I to sell, I'd give the backstory and source. That's the best I could promise. Still, in the end, while it might be good to be a purist, i'm finding it's almost impossible with figs. For now, I'm setting on taste and performance. I'm a tomato breeder btw and I never give out seed to unfinished work. A lot of typing to say much to nothing. Just some 2-beer thoughts.

    My Pastilliere Baud has dropped all its fruits in its first 2 years so I'm hoping I can get it going this year. It puts on so many figs and to see them all drop is frustrating. Pastilliere from Raintree is on my list.

    Are Pastiliere and Unknown Pastiliere the same? I have seen Unk Pastiliere described as a Smyrna type.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  11 місяців тому +1

      The Unk was thought to be Pastiliere and was given the name incorrectly. It's a Smyrna that requires pollination and has a very strong berry flavor. It's very tasty.

    Hi @rossraddi Is there any commonality between Pastilliere and Unk Pastilliere other than confusing name? It’s coincidence that a lot of people also say Unk Pastilliere is the 1 fig they would have (Unk I ‘think’ must have caprification but I think that is still debated?) thanks
