    I have a second season rdb. This year it died back to about a foot or so. Grew 7 ft with multiple suckers that I pruned to 5. I got 25 figs off it. It was not early. I think I got my first ripe fig sometime in early September. But kept producing until mid October. The fruit were small maybe 25 gram average but not one split from the rain. I was pretty happy and can’t wait see what happens this year.

    I like the Makedonia Dark variety. I had 3 figs ripen by Aug. 8 this year on a tree in central Maryland USA.

    I don’t have a great deal a problem with splitting because I keep my figs heavily watered all the time in well drained Sandy soil. For instants I knew a rain storm was coming so I gave them a little bit of extra water the day before and I had 2 inches of rain in six hours and not one fig split on any of my plants it really works for me anyway.

    Hey Ross, did you read the list in Pons' book about the earliest ripening figs? I don't remember you reviewing any of these (other than de tres esplets) , here is the top 10 from the list: De Tres Esplets , Gota de Mel, Moellada, Porquenca Negra, Planera ,Verdal Siciliana , Negra Primerenca ,Manressa , Alenyana , varieties

      Negra Primerenca has potential. The others not so much.

    Good morning Ross
    I am a fan of fig trees, I live in Pamplona, the northern part of Spain and I am a follower of your videos
    Following your instructions, I put different varieties of fig trees in 50-liter containers and in a greenhouse.
    I agree with you that in cold areas (like mine), you have to go to early varieties.
    Thanks to your advice, this year I have been eating figs for 5 months (from May 24 until now). I would like to send you photos of the early varieties that I grow, but I don't know how to do it
    a greeting
    Placid
    Thanks for the video

    Well there's another one to add to my wishlist! I really enjoyed my RdB. Seeds are a little crunchier than I prefer but otherwise is great. I only had one split wide open but was still good eating.

    Are you sure that's how you pronounce Campaniere? I watched the Thierry introductory video and it sounds like the announcer says, "Comp-ahn-ye-air". Similar to the way the back end of Pastiliere is pronounced but with the front end being different. The -iere is the same for both names... not sure about the origin. I got one earlier this year so it's still a baby but can't wait.

    • @RossRaddi
      @RossRaddi  3 роки тому +7

      Absolutely not. I'm sure half the pronunciations I say are wrong.

    Hey Ross, do you have any concerns having fig trees planted against the house like that? Given how close together they are, I assumed they would try to send roots out into your yard but also under your house towards pipes and things like that.

    • @dchambers986
      @dchambers986 2 роки тому +1

      Pipes might be a problem - fig trees are small and commonly planted in types of spaces and seldom cause problems. That said, I don't plant any trees/shrubs/etc within 3 feet. Ross is in PA though, so those figs need the extra protection in his zone. Most likely problem is a busted/clogged sewer line. Figs are worth the risk.

    Living in 9b florida I'd have to say we could use late varieties. From May to mid September it's raining once a day.

    • @Omicronian06
      @Omicronian06 3 роки тому +1

      Ross suggested Dels Ermitans to me for its lateness and I also picked up a Pellejo De Toro because it supposedly ripens late Sept to Nov in Murcia. The caveat appears to be it splits in rain but depending on where you are here in FL that may be a moot point as here in the Charlotte Harbor region it becomes much drier and the rains less intense when it does rain. Cheers!
