Your explanation is exceedingly clear, concise and complete, aided sweetly by the simple but effective graphics at the bottom righthand corner. Brilliant effort! Thank you so much for sharing.
As video is different to the usual adventure sailing videos we share. We are keen to hear if you found it interesting or helpful. Please let us know in the comments below.
I found it very useful, I always regarded the use of a spinnaker as a dark art but I now have much better understanding of how and when to use it. Great video, stay safe x
This was perfect; information and timing. I’m right in the middle of specking an asymmetric but wasn’t sure how I would rig it. The addition of a tweaker, snatch blocks and ratchet block for the dowsing sock line answer all my questions about control. Also, never considered using the Samson post as the tack line attachment point, so another of my problems solved. Now all I have to do is order my sail, sock, lines and blocks! Can’t wait for spring...it’s -7C here in Toronto! Fair winds.
I've sailed dinghies with an asym and I love it. This is the first time I have ever seen someone use a spin-pole on an asym. Very interesting. Doesn't your VMG suffer when doing that? I would think you'd be better off jibing downwind... I guess if you have limited seaway and short-handed like that, the ease makes it worth it?
Your background in dingy racing makes a huge difference in your confidence using the sails to the full potential. Thanks for sharing these top tips. Cheers.
wow this is the first video i watched about flying a spinnaker that I actually was able to understand and grasp how it works. Excellent job. I feel confident and actually will move forward with acquiring a spinnaker for our boat. Thank You. I really like your videos especially for the education style you two share.
I've been crusing (3 weeks a year in Greece, not a real crusiser yet) for 10 years with no Spi but now I really want to give it a try ! Many thanks, crystal clear !
Thank you for the great tips. While my experiences don’t include sailing…. I have a huge desire to learn. Your videos make the dream a reality, something i can visualize, as a future possibility. Hard work and some very rare experiences. You share are awesome. Love and light. Keep sailing in joy and happiness. Be safe… Always, Psipsina, Utah, USA 🇺🇸🌏🙏🏽💜💜
We also love our A.S. We have been using the pole but your explanation on rigging and transferring from the bow roller makes it so much easier than how we have been doing it. Thanks so much.
definitely want to see more of sailing technics. How to jibe in a nice to strong breeze, how to heave to, how to coordinate your tack, basic and useful knots that can save your day, how to snub your anchor etc....
I found that really interesting. I’m a subscriber but NOT a sailor. I have been enjoying your journey for 18 months or so and appreciate your videography.
Great videos! Your videos of practical application and economics are very valuable. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. Please keep sharing your 20 plus years of sailing experience. Great looking spinnaker!
I’m a total noob. I found your channel because I’m aspiring to learn how to sail this year, and this is the only time I saw an explanation that is noob friendly. The diagrams help a lot to understand. No one would be mad at you guys if you make one about the basics of sailing 🙃
After so many years (almost 6 i presume) its a pleasure to watch your enthousiastic video;s . It drives (sails) me away from the big corona hoax i am in!
Love the tip to put the snuffer line in a ratchet block! Like you guys we are racers transitioning to cruising and are learning how to use our snuffer and fly the kite short handed, so this was a brilliant video, thank you! Getting more hints and tips from you guys for short handed cruising would be brilliant!
Hi Guys, It took us 18 months to slow down from racers to cruisers! It was the passage from Tonga to New Zealand that finally did it where we reduced sail a lot to slow down and make the motion of the boat more comfortable. Since then we never bother to work out our average passage speeds.
As an old sailor I also agree that bring out out the spinnaker can bring out fear in the crew. This would have to be the best video I have seen on cruising with a spinnaker. This is an excellent video and should become training material for any cruising yacht club. 👍❤️
Great spinnaker tips Flo. I’d never been happy with how we’d had the tack rigged, through a bow roller. Also love your ratchet block idea for the sock downhaul.
Great video! The first of yours i am watching. Seeing my friends on Jupiter 2 struggling with their spinnaker kind of put me off flying a spinnaker. Your video is simple and to the point with great animations. Thank you!
Great tips thank you, keep the coming. These are what us newbies need it is great follow all sailing You-tubers and great to see lovely places that we will soon get to, but top tips are invaluable, thank you.
Thanks!!! I added this one to my saved 'sailing tutorials' album. I now have 2 main sails, a hank on jib and a 130 genoa. No whisker yet but I'm thi king after that getting a kit fro Sail Right and sewing a spinnaker myself.
I REALLY liked this video, it was very well done! Very informative and all the pertinent details are included. More like this one please, I did not grow up racing sailboats, but I want to be a better sailor and UA-cam is a great venue to learn!! You are in such a beautiful setting, water and beaches are amazing!! I loved it, and will watch as many times as needed to learn it!
Hey Matt & Amy, Went back and watched the episode that showed how your sails were made. Really a great learning experience. Awesome choice of design and colors for the spinnaker Amy! The two of you make a great team.
Fantastic advise, perhaps one day I will get a yacht and make good on your tips but for now I will have to stick with my six cylinder diesel and and trawl gear, any thing that stops you getting whipped of the deck in a gust of wind is a great safety tip.
Great video. I had never seen a tweaker line to control the sheet like that, but it makes perfect sense to easily change the angle of pull on the spinnaker to help stabilize it. Very clever. I love your videos, keep up the good work. Fair winds.
Definitely the best and most informative about rigging-up and sailing with an asymmetric. Have literally just bought an one off a sailing club buddy and happened to find your video when looking into what's on UA-cam about them, and who should pop first in the results! 🙂 Has it been spiced-rum-o-clock yet? Enjoy.
I've sailed a lot with both regular and asymmetric spinnakers but still found you tips helpful. I especially liked the use of the pole for apparent winds too far aft for the normal asymmetric set up and the use of the ratchet block for the take down line. I also love all of your episodes and look forward to each one's arrival in my in box especially now locked down by Covid and buried under snow in New England.
Great tutorial, lots of stuff that I’ve never done, seen, or heard! Lots to think about! Every video is better than the last, keep up the great work! Thank you!
This was an absolutely first class video/lesson. It really helps demystify the art of the spinnaker... you do make it look so easy though - I guess practice makes perfect!! 👏🏻👏🏻
Wow! The best tips I've ever seen with respect to spinnaker management. Obviously, some creative thinking on your end as well. More like these, please?
It's fun doing this single handed! Although I don't have a spinnaker pole to use. A crusing chute or sock makes a massive difference though and makes handling the sail much easier.
Nice one! I bought a Code C from Rolly Tasker but didn't get the nice Tshirt...we have a block on the tack and just let it out more for higher down wind angles-but not good above 15knots
Go for it, chose a day with a gentle breeze and remember to have the camera ready to capture the grin on your face as you sail along under the prettiest sail on the boat. :-)
Thx for the videos -they always brighten my week. We have an asymmetric on a furling system which makes the idea of moving the tack to the pole to sail deeper impossible. However if we have to sail low our solution is to simply goose wing using the spinnaker pole. Works well enough - especially with the code0
Thanks for the feedback Daniel, don't worry we prefer having adventures so that will still be the main theme, just maybe a few instructional types along the way.
Awesome! Very educational. Yes, pulling up while sitting down to bring down the sock over the spinnaker is so smart. Wish I was there to try it myself! :¬) Webhead USA
We have an 1986 38ft boat very similar to Florence, without bowsprit, and have been meaning to get an asymmetric spinnaker (ours is symmetric) which for family cruising with young children onboard is so much better. These tips of yours were essential to finally get a asymmetric. Thank you!
What an awesome idea - that you can teach sailing as you travel. I'm assuming you have single-handed methods for every situation, so those would certainly be interesting to see.
Fantastic video and excellent tips! I really enjoyed a how-to from real life cruiser experience. Of all the sailing channels I watch, the two of you exhibit the best seamanship. Keep up the good work!
First what a great surprise a Sunday episode I really enjoyed it. I often wonder what you guys are doing and why as you handle the boat when I watch your videos so it's terrific that you took the time to explain it to the folks learning about sailing through your videos. Thank you for the lesson you guys have such a calm and clear way of explaining things it was very enjoyable. It is really nice to have one of these teaching videos mixed in once in a while as you do it so well. It helps me understand what you are doing and why and makes watching the regular videos more enjoyable. Thank you
Great video. Very informative. I’ve not owned a boat large enough for a spinnaker yet; but, I certainly plan to trade up the ole day sailer when I retire.
All boats are large enough for spinnakers! We used to race dinghies with massive spinnakers! ;-) Smaller boats generally just have smaller spinnakers though, and smaller spinnakers are easier to learn with.
Hey guys, that was very useful! I have a spinnaker that I've never had out of the bag since I bought Moon Shadow so I've no idea if it is symmetrical or asymmetrical! I have to admit that, never having used one before I was kinda happy to leave it in the bag. This video has inspired me to get it out and try it this year. Thanks for the nudge! Yes, more videos like this would be great: * reef navigation - getting in and out of passes with unreliable/non-existent charts * how to get weather updates on long passages (e.g. ocean crossing) * passage planning for ocean crossing - is it even a thing? * water harvesting (making?) If you could just knock those out for next week that would be ideal ;-)
We look forward to seeing a picture of your spinnaker flying! Thank you for the encouragement and thoughts on future videos. How to plan for an ocean crossing is on the cards for later this year hopefully (it is a thing, more weather planning though). Next week might be pushing it though! ;-)
I really loved this video. You guys have a way of explaining things that is very clear and really sticks. That being said, I’m taking an online “learn to sail” course that someone has put together. It’s a pre made , self paced kinda thing. It’s $100. You guys might want to consider doing something like that. Creating a course for people to get the basics down to help them get out on the water. We have a J29 and my husband used to race 12 meters but I have no boat experience. Episodes like this are so valuable to me as a good foundation. I would gladly take a course made by you guys.
I have an asymmetrical on my cat, I can tack it to the windward bow for more downwind running, so I don't need to worry about a pole. A big advantage when single handed sailing. I could not imaging having a spinnaker and not using a sock either.
Low positioning of the spinnaker pole for your assymetric is essential in light winds and flat seas. For novice to even competent sailors that may rarelyhave set/hoisted a spinnaker or "assy" try it in light winds ideal conditions first and progress from there. Winds of 18 knots + gets a bit hairy. I was a bowman on racing boats until I was in my late 50's. Why? Because no one wants to do it. Nice video Matt and Amy well explained. Who was steering? ha ha
Your explanation is exceedingly clear, concise and complete, aided sweetly by the simple but effective graphics at the bottom righthand corner. Brilliant effort! Thank you so much for sharing.

Great Video complimented by clear graphics and camera work. I'd love to see how your methods could be adapted for thee singlehander...
Very useful. Thanks for sharing.
Your background in dingy racing makes a huge difference in your confidence using the sails to the full potential. Thanks for sharing these top tips. Cheers.
We're planning to rig our first spinnaker and your video is now the sum total of all our knowledge, thank you
Excellent tips especially the ratchet block, that's the part i've struggled with, many thanks...please keep them coming.
wow this is the first video i watched about flying a spinnaker that I actually was able to understand and grasp how it works. Excellent job. Thank you, good to know some non-sailors find this interesting too. Thanks for your support :-)
How my heart lifts when I hear the theme music for your videos.
Lovely. And a ratchet block for the spinnaker is my new friend. Many thanks!
Never sailed with a spinnaker - feel a bit like a 59 year old virgin! Thanks for the tips!
Just sat down with a Sunday afternoon beer, and I get notification of this. Awesome.
Great videos! Your videos of practical application and economics are very valuable. Thanks for sharing your wisdom. Please keep sharing your 20 plus years of sailing experience. Great looking spinnaker!
I don't know about sailing but always happy to see your videos 😊
That asym is a beauty! Rolly Tasker made you a great set of sails!
Such a great video and so overdue for someone to talk through the steps and setup.

really interesting......the practical tips are as good as the beautiful travel videos
I certainly agree with you. Your flying spinaker looks great!
Thank you!
Great stuff, folks. Nice of you to think of such an important lesson.
Loved your video again as always. Having Rolly Tasker sails my self it all gave me a huge smile on my face..well done!
Great tips thank you, keep the coming. These are what us newbies need it is great follow all sailing You-tubers and great to see lovely places that we will soon get to, but top tips are invaluable, thank you.

Hey Matt & Amy,
Went back and watched the episode that showed how your sails were made. Really a great learning experience. Awesome choice of design and colors for the spinnaker Amy!
The two of you make a great team.
Thank you so much for this great tutorial. Absolutely enjoyed it. For me as a novice, definitely helps. Thank you so much.

Very helpful. I might get my spinnaker out this season. New sailor.
Have fun!
Useful tips, guys thanks, keep those fabulous videos coming. You two are the best.
A good lesson for practical experience. Love you two.
Great tutorial, lots of stuff that I’ve never done, seen, or heard! Lots to think about! Every video is better than the last, keep up the great work!
Thank you!
Thanks so much for this excellent talk and demonstration!
Great video with some really good tips. One of the best 'how to' vids I've seen. Thank you.
Beautifully clear teaching and diagrams. Perfect! Thank You : )
This was an absolutely first class video/lesson. It really helps demystify the art of the spinnaker... you do make it look so easy though - I guess practice makes perfect!! 👏🏻👏🏻
Practice and doing it the same way every time is key :-)
Wow! The best tips I've ever seen with respect to spinnaker management. Obviously, some creative thinking on your end as well. More like these, please?
Thanks for this video, collecting my spinaker from the sailmaker tomorrow!
Love this!! We are lake sailors right now, just got started in 2020. Looking forward to flying our Spinnaker this year!!
Some real pro tips in there! Thanks!
Thanks! This is exactly the type of content that sailing channels need to evolve into. Great work. We'll use these tips in our sailing.
It's fun doing this single handed! Although I don't have a spinnaker pole to use. A crusing chute or sock makes a massive difference though and makes handling the sail much easier.

Great video, very clear and helpful. All the best for your ongoing travels!! 👍
Great video. You are both such inspiring and talented sailors
Very informative and professionally explained..

Good show! I wouldnt like this channel if it were just instructional videos like this but this was informative (ratchet block was brill!) and fun!
Thanks for the feedback Daniel, don't worry we prefer having adventures so that will still be the main theme, just maybe a few instructional types along the way.

Great video, you explained what you do so well. I’d really like to see more of this kind of video from you guys.
very handy tips, thanks for sharing
Awesome video guys! Those are great tips, I'll definitely try it out this summer with my asymmetric spinnaker. Thanks so much. Cheers
Great episode 👍 communication, teamwork , experience all make it look so easy.
Very good presentation and thoughtful video, nice work guys

BZ - great tips AND a very well produced instructional video!! Best I’ve seen on flying the spinnaker!
So you fly your asymmetrical like a symmetrical spinnaker. Sweet!
Excellent, practical advice. Thank you.
