It absolutely CAN be a gateway drug. Why is this so hard to understand? I know most people love pot (myself included) but it could lead to other things after stopping. Especially in people who have been using/abusing the substance for many years. C'mon.
I've stopped using marijuana for 3 weeks now after years and years of daily use, and the side effects are real. Mental fog, poor appetite, trouble sleeping, mood swings. You see an intelligent man who is in good shape. But people want to give him crap about using drugs and promoting “dangerous stuff.” I have a lot of respect for Dr. Hart.
I feel like this video is trying to down play some of the negative effects of marijuana without considering all the variables. Sure marijuana, when consumed responsibly and not excessively, isn't as bad as other consumables but that doesn't mean it still have some seriously bad effects to it. Smoking anything is bad for your lungs, no debate is even possible. FYI when I look at anything in life I ask myself would I let my children (which I do have) participate in (insert variable such as marijuana, video games, glutenous eating) without my counsel or attempt of counsel. No, my warning would be this. Marijuana can be a more slippery slope down the path of life than I would prefer them to take.
I mean, that's what the Dr is talking about. He's not downplaying anything, instead, he is trying to debunk some common beliefs about drugs. There is no "slippery slope". But of course, it has negative health effects. So do alcohol and caffeine and other socially accepted drugs. So does your cellphone. But yeah, you do you.
Right, I agree with you. The main reason I participate in the comments is because when I'm reading the comments there is a theme of validation that down plays the negative aspect of the drug.

Yeah but anyone who gets to a point in their life that they are exposed to and are willing to try “hard” drugs are extremely likely to have previously been exposed to and willing to try “softer” drugs by that point in their life.
I started smoking weed when I was 14, and I am currently in a circle of friends that use codeine and percs.
I just do codeine (which is relatively harmless) and not oxy. weed isn't a gateway drug, my personal choice is.
Rather telling that Dr. Hart needs to explain the difference between causation and correlation on a mainstream media outlet's social media channel--that's a fundamental concept in statistics and the social and physical sciences.
I always said “Marijuana Wasn’t the gateway... Dealers were the gateway... the guy that has the weed always had Other things.. Blow.. Speed..MDMA and Pain Killers ... usually “
This maketh sense.
Dr Hart is actually at odds with the majority of addiction researchers for his claim that addiction is not a disease (he argues that there aren't specific biomarkers, which is disputable). Not trying to say he's not smart, and he's a great speaker, but I wish they would have chosen someone not openly at odds with the scientific community 🤷🏻♀️
Science isn't hard fact. Science changes all the time. That's the absolutely great thing about science! While he might disagree with the community that he himself is a part of, doesn't mean he's not right.
@@firehawk2324 Science does not change all the time. The scientific process is the same and it produces conclusions that are facts or are as close to it as current data allows. Additional information can change our understanding of what we thought was fact but to say "science changes all the time" is to imply scientifically derived and peer reviewed conclusions can be dismissed or accepted on a whim. Similar to people who say a scientific theory "is just a theory after all" which is to dismiss fact because the person doesn't 'feel' like it is correct and doesn't understand the the definition of a "theory" in the science.
What is in dispute in this case isn't the result of well executed scientific processes, it is the definition of disease.

I feel like the umbrella/rain example is a weird one for correlation given that if you reverse it, rain is a clear causation of increased umbrella usage.
Same, I thought this example was not good. Increased number of heat strokes and increased sales of ice cream is a better example. Neither is causing the other, they both depend on a common factor which is summer.
Umbrella doesn't cause rain.
Yeah he should have said "umbrella use increases when the ground is wet". I've heard that example before. He probably has too but then kinda forgot how it went.
rain doesn't cause umbrella usage. rain correlates to umbrella usage. I still walk around during the rain without umbrellas. the rain doesn't cause me to use umbrella.

Alcohol is the biggest gateway drug
One thing that drives me crazy is people vilify drug addicts but if you drink all the time that’s fine because it’s legal and it’s socially acceptable. Addiction is addiction whether it’s a legal drug or not

1:34 WTH dude? The link between rain and umbrellas is the perfect example of causation.
It's like saying the link between lack of food and hunger is not causation because hunger doesn't cause lack of food.
What a fail.
It depends on the direction of cause and effect, the umbrellas are the effect of the rain, if you open an umbrella in the middle of the day it won't cause rain
You basically made the same statement he did, but with food vs hunger, like he did umbrella vs rain, both of your examples are correct if looked at the correct way, but the example can be used both ways. Rain causes umbrellas to go up, food shortage causes hunger, whereas, Umbrellas going up do not cause rain, and hunger does not cause food shortage..

Legalise all recreational drugs. Police can then focus on more serious crimes.
Marijuana might not be a gateway drug, but when marijuana was legalized in Colorado, there was a definite rise in the use of harder drugs. And yes, I do live in Colorado.
So basically if you’re on the spectrum of bi polar or schizophrenia you should not use drugs. It effects 1.1% and 1% of the population respectively. Then why would you tell any one to do drugs if no one knows if they might be on the spectrum until it’s too late.
The physical and psychological effects are long term and may be permanent. People that use just do not want to hear that their precious coping drug has negative affects on the body and mind. This guy has been doing heroin regularly for five years
I think its silly that he does heroin regularly. heroin shouldn't ever be used more often than once every 2 months unless you're retired, and even that is very often.

The opioid epidemic was not just about opioid-related deaths, the epidemic also encompasses the significant number of individuals that experienced opioid dependancy/addiction and the repercussions many experienced after trying to get off of them after the irresponsible epidemic of overprescribing that occurred due to the negligence of physicians and the factually inaccurate information provided by pharmaceutical companies regarding how addictive these substances are. This should not be downplayed or ignored. Even with this being said, opioids can be incredibly dangerous and cause death easily on their own, such as Fentanyl and Carfentanyl, which are lethal in small doses.

Dr Hart, you should take an economic course to understand why some drugs are not more wide spread or use of them. “Gateway” does not just relate to the illicit use of harder drugs but also dependency on prescription drugs.
