My family easily hits $6000 per year in "grocery" spend (remember, not everything sold at a grocery store is food)! $6,000 x 6% = $360 - $95 AF = "net" benefit of $265. So I'm making $265 on just groceries even with the annual fee taken out. Anything from the cash back on streaming, gas, or transit then is just gravy.
BCP was my first real cashback card and I still use it four years later. For groceries it's a no brainer and the other categories make it a versatile choice.
I just got approved for this card! it’s a great card and I have 10 month-old baby so groceries it’s our priority! love the card benefits! Thank you Sebby!!
to my fellow active duty military, the $95 fee for the BCP will be waived. you'll have to create the account and get your acct setup then call customer service. without that fee, this card is a must own!
I use this card almost daily. Use it for my weekly gas purchase, my 2 to 3 times a week to the grocery store, and my almost daily purchase of gas station/convenient store coffee and/or snack purchases. I love using the monies earned (which I for years, never had a cash-back card) to reinvest in some precious metals for my (and my Son’s) portfolio. Now they added the streaming 6% cashback, which I’m certain we take advantage of as he gets a little older. Every dollar (back) helps add to our net worth.
If you spend $6k or more annually at a grocery that is on the list it should be a winning deal. I currently have a couple of cards that get 2% cash back on every thing with no fee have a card that provided 3% for gasoline and restaurants. So, use the 6% on groceries only less 2% that I would get anyway and the net of 4% on $6k would be $240 annually vs the $95 fee. The upside is the grocery we use has a great wine department so getting to the $6k is easy.
With the $250 bonus minus the annual fee you’re still making a higher signup bonus than the everyday card (not to mention the much higher cash back percentages). Hella worth it for at least the first year.
First year, for most cards, is a no-brainer. I'm a huge fan of cards with "downgrade paths" (to no annual fee cards) in case Year 2/3/x) doesn't make sense. BCP/BCE family is great for this :)
@@aceous99 I've heard that with most cards if you cancel after the new annual fee, but within 30 days, they will still refund it (or at least pro-rated). And this keeps their "ire" away. Anyone else tried this?
I like the new bonus categories, they add a little more value to an already great card. I spend over $5K a year on grocery so this card was already a win for me. Don't care for the new card design tho.
@@leeklinglesmith3427 Its not that I don't like it, I just think it looks too much like the cash magnet card. Wish they would've come up with something else. Oh well, it doesn't really matter what it looks like.
Hi Sebby - we still have the old Blue Cash card. No AF, 5% gas, groceries and pharmacies. 1% on all other categories. The new everyday cards cap groceries, our card has no cap. It does have a $6500 spend before the 5% kicks in annually. We spend a lot on groceries and gas. Received close to $1200 cash back last year. With the new card, the cash back would drop to half. So we are keeping the old card that’s no longer offered.
@@AskSebby Hulu just went up in price to $55. I use UA-cam TV which is $50 which is only still $600 bucks a year. So it is like you are only saving a few dollars per month with 6% back.
Just wanted to mention because I havent seen anyone else post about it yet, chase seems to have relaxed there rules a lot. I just started taking my credit seriously about a year ago and worked my way up to 5 cards over that period and then planned to wait about 6 months for my first one to fall off and get another chase card. However on my chase account there was a preapproved offer for the sapphire preffered, I only have a 670 credit score so this was suprising, instantly I got approved for a stupidly high credit limit imo, basically doubling my credit limit total. And that's cool puts me ahead of schedule. However right after I was preapproved for both the freedom unlimited and slate card and I picked up the freedom unlimited the same day and got another stupidly high credit limit. Both of these cards were acquired above 5/24 as well as being under a 700credit score and after going through the credit card churning reddit apparently this has been happening for the past month or so, some people are even getting 10000 bonus points with new sapphire cards and other added perks. This is a game changer if the 5/24 rule is no longer valid.
I think what you need to do is benchmark this against a 2% everything $0 annual fee card. So, subtract out the 2% on those multipliers, subtract out the $95, and see what is left over. If it's positive, this is better than a 2% card.
I'm more interested in the transit 3% I mean traditional taxis, and also uber/lyft Trains (long distance and subway) Buses Ferries Parking Tolls And gas stations Every streaming service is included
@sebby with a family of 6 a superstore or warehouse club is the most cost effective place for me to purchase groceries. The BCP excludes those. Any card you would suggest that may include those with 3% or higher? Thanks in advance.
jdawgg27 thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my small city does not have a Costco. Would you happen to know if Sam’s would accept my Costco card? Is it a visa/MasterCard? Obviously I could still apply for one without having a club just wondering if it would be helpful in my scenario.
ricecowboy Stores like Walmart, target, bj’s and other wholesale clubs are not supermarkets according to Amex. You can find a list that includes some but not all of the accepted stores on the Amex website.
Walmart doesn't qualify, so this card is almost worthless for Walmart groceries. However, the Walmart credit card was recently taken over by Capital One & is now offering 5% cash back inside the store for the first year if you link your Walmart card to the Walmart Pay app on your phone & pay that way. I recently started doing that. It's not bad at all for 5% cash back. The Walmart card is much better now. When it was controlled by Synchrony Bank, it totally sucked for in store purchases & was only useful for Walmart.com
I usually grocery shop at Walmart( in store purchase, dont like having someone else pick the foods for me if ordering online), will that still count toward grocery category with this card? Thanks
Currently, it doesn't appear so as Walmart is on their excluded list. I'm not particularly happy about that as I had this credit card at the top of my list to add to my wallet, but I do the bulk of my grocery shopping at Walmart.
Doesn't make sense if you have the AmEx Gold Card. Lot more value from the Gold Card for Grocery, Restaurants & even Gasoline, Ride-sharing & Streaming Services (can use it for BP, Chevron, Uber/ Lyft, Netflix, Spotify, Hulu etc. Gift Cards at Grocery Stores) - can get you a lot more value considering grocery store spending gets you 4x points upto $25,000 points.
What happens if I cancel this card before the 1st year of having this card. just to avoid the annual fee. im making a purchase of 1,000 soon and im just doing it for the $250 bonus.
Direct tv stream costs me roughly $90 a month and Apple Music family is $15 that in a year almost allows me to break even not including groceries and gas that’s just a bonus
My approach to thinking this through is, at max I will get 300$ a year in cash if I spend and maximize categories on this card .. compared to half say 150$ i wouldn’t mind losing to earning points and traveling and making memories on other cards .. so why bother ..
I have this card. I personally don’t like it. The app is annoying to it doesn’t give any stats for me to know what categories i have spent the most. Gas stations are nice but i realized i only fill up my tank 2x a month. And that 3% turns into 1% with the .65cent extra charge for using a credit card. I buy majority of my stuff from Target.
Good video and great tool. I was targeted for an upgrade offer ( $250 statement credit after spending $1k within 3 months). Decided to upgrade instead of applying for a new one after watching this video. I’m trying to save spots for chase. My plan is to downgrade back to blue cash after the first year since I prefer earning MR points.
Makes sense with your Chase situation. Make sure to not downgrade until the card is hits 12 months. Too many clawback stories and don't want you to get hit :)
I already have the Blue Cash Everyday and just got the offer email to upgrade to this card with the welcome bonus, new card and no credit check. Should I upgrade and eat that $95 annual fee?
Upgrading means you lose out on that welcome bonus: www.asksebby.com/blog/should-you-upgrade-your-american-express-card Depends on if you want another card obviously but YMMV.
Ask Sebby Amex gave me the BCE without a sign up bonus last year because I didn’t qualify for a bonus. Now they offering me the BCP as a no credit check upgrade which includes all the bonus except 0% intro. This would be my first bonus from Amex. I plan to downgrade after 12 months back to the BCE. The Amex Gold is also in my future.
This card is a no brainer. There is no other card that offers such a great cash back on something that you need to buy to survive. Who doesn't buy grocery, unless you eat out everyday? Hitting the 6000 cap is so easy. Most families spend more than $100 a week on groceries.

Or do you suggest another one...
Felton Dubroc Sevy has recommended the doublecash as the first upgrade after a citi secured card . He also stated in his secured cards 2019 video that Bank of America sometimes is difficult to get in to without a checking account relationship with them . Probably bite on both if the upgraded path makes sense to you late game .
It's a mediocre card with a mediocre signup bonus and a mediocre earn rate/annual fee ratio for a mediocre person like me. This card is like a family SUV. Comfortable, pricey, bad MPG. Hey Seb, I discovered the other day that with 5% cell phone cash back with US Bank Cash+ you can use google pay to pay through your phone plan effectively giving you 5% CB for that first $6000 off mobile payments. I don't think anything beats that earning rate and flexibility combo at no annual fee. You should do a PSA on that when I get some datapoints on it.
I'm struggling to see the difference. Would cash that they sent to you somehow be better than cash that you don't have to send to them? If I find $20 or save $20, the result is exactly the same. In either scenario, I would have 20 extra dollars
Check out Scotiabank Amex Gold changes coming on August, it will be better than Amex Cobalt :/ And unfortunately there is no way to transfer points, any suggestions? I'm from Canada and the Cobalt seems to be the only best credit card available to us
Not worth it, I think most people can’t control their budget perfectly and most of the time because they know they have a credit card they get in debt and over spent, So at the end of the year you probably made $395 but how many things you know shouldn’t bought unless you have the cash to pay your card. Ask Sebby yeah I called and they said they will “escalate” it to marketing to see what they can do for me ... so let’s hope I get something ☹️☹️
SEBBYS BACK !!!!!
Just by the 6 % on groceries and 3% on gas this card is worth the 95dollars af
Hey sabby...I have a question to ask you and would really admire your suggestion. I'm new with credit I have about a 715 and I have only a secure credit card and now receiving offers for other credit cards.I have offers from Citi double cash credit card and Bank of America credit card my question is which one would you should suggest I go with? Or do you suggest another one...
Felton Dubroc Sevy has recommended the doublecash as the first upgrade after a citi secured card . He also stated in his secured cards 2019 video that Bank of America sometimes is difficult to get in to without a checking account relationship with them . Probably bite on both if the upgraded path makes sense to you late game .
I would go for Chase cards while you still can: www.asksebby.com/blog/how-much-are-chase-credit-cards-worth
Excellent video !!!
Really all of my friends has one the take each other's or they have 10 different ones... 2:25
Hey Sebby,
With all these perks on this card, it seems like the rumored green card being revamped is probably not likely no?
Maybe fall 2019? I don't see them doing it back-to-back.
Is fred Meyer excluded?
Scroll down and click "Looking for a Personal Card?" to find the Amex Blue Cash Preferred $300 offer (referral): www.asksebby.com/amexbcp
Amex don’t even let you get “cash back” you can only get statement credit.
Not really materially different.
I'm struggling to see the difference. Would cash that they sent to you somehow be better than cash that you don't have to send to them? If I find $20 or save $20, the result is exactly the same. In either scenario, I would have 20 extra dollars
@@mwbrazier there’s zero difference between $20 in your hand and $20 statement credit. It’s still $20.
Are they changing Amex blue cash everyday design too..? Cause this card looks ugly.
no
Check out Scotiabank Amex Gold changes coming on August, it will be better than Amex Cobalt :/
And unfortunately there is no way to transfer points, any suggestions? I'm from Canada and the Cobalt seems to be the only best credit card available to us
Can we transfer MR to Gold card?
Not worth it, I think most people can’t control their budget perfectly and most of the time because they know they have a credit card they get in debt and over spent, So at the end of the year you probably made $395 but how many things you know shouldn’t bought unless you have the cash to pay your card.
Great analysis dough!
With any credit card it's all about discipline.
Nope not worth the $95 annual fee except for a downgrade path after use of bonus offer points
I notice your channel dont help people try and build credit like u use to. Now it's for ballers that have high credit limits😥😥😥
There's not really any additional advice I can give related to credit building.
Do A, B, C and wait.
@@AskSebby ok thanks!!!
