    I once found a wallet on the ground. Upon checking the wallet I found a chase, discover card. I called the customer service numbers on the back to try to see if they would connect me to the owner and they were not helpful at all. Luckily they also had an Amex card customer service called the owner and we were able to meet up with in 10 minutes. Been an AmEx holder since then.

    As a Brit with an Amex I can tell you that everyone always thinks I'm rich when I pay with it. They have such a premium image, most people don't realise that it isn't even hard to get. It is also one of only a few cards in the UK that actually offers good rewards. Their customer service is great as well. The only issue is only about half the places I go to accept them but it is worth it for the rewards.

      It depends on your income level. If you earn over $100k a year, then you can get everything up to the Platinum card easily. The Black card, on the other hand, is another story altogether. It's only for the 1%.

      I'm one of the millennial customers they have acquired in the last 12 months from the UK. I've used the card purely for travel perks. And I find myself using my Amex every day as my primary card and carrying my debit card as my backup if Amex isn't accepted. It's perfect.

    • @mateuszdrab
      @mateuszdrab Рік тому +30

      I love my Amex, but like mentioned by @6272jac, lots of places, especially small merchants won't accept it because they complain about the fees. This means I always need to have a backup visa - just in case. Let's not forget though that the UK is a country where your average overpriced corner shop rejects card payments below 5/10 pounds or charges a fee. Crazy example is one of my local car washes, charging 2 pounds for an 8 pound car wash. I just avoid these places like a plague - I not gonna support any business which forces me to pay by cash in 2023.

    • @jz5791
      @jz5791 Рік тому +39

      Not a small business owner but it's because the card vendors charge like 2-3$ a transaction minimum. So if you buy 8$ car wash that cost the business 2-3$ in labor and long term costs per wash is their calculation if they make 4$ profit well if it's minus 2-3$ well then they are basically working for visa or the cc companies. They aren't trying to be greedy. Also most people love their local small business where those people spend their money locally vs large out of town companies profit leaves to the owners. And usually large distributors are used for inventory

    • @hashish2007
      @hashish2007 Рік тому +78

      Well, both. :) It's a charge card in a sense that it doesn't report its limit to credit bureaus and you need to "check your spending power" prior to making large purchases. But at the same time it lets you "pay over time" for certain charges, which was not a thing when I originally got the card. How curious. My experience is quite different. In Asia I find that Amex is typically accepted at the major / tourist / high-end venues and areas, but in the broader areas that are more native and working-class in orientation (the greater portion of the region), I find Visa to be much more commonly accepted. I think that Amex figured out that they could not compete with Visa and MC on broad terms, so they aimed for an affluent, status-symbol market positioning.

If you’ve never had it before, you can easily get 100,000+ points as a signing bonuses which is the equivalent of $1,000 or more. While the simplicity of the Venture X and the fact that so many more vendors accept it is great, they are so stingy with credit limits. My Gold Card on the other hand will allow me to charge as much as $75k on it if ever needed. Due to the multiplier categories I earn so many points from it as well. I find thats it has gotten pretty good the past 5-8 years. There was a long time when you had to actually ask if they took AMEX before paying because maybe a third of merchants didn't take it. Now its single digit percentages. In the past year, I've had 3 experiences where I went to pay and they didn't take AMEX. Four I guess if you count Costco. I'm a pretty heavy spender. My parents have a Discover card and there are far more places that don't take Discover than don't take AMEX. Thats how its been for me at least, ymmv. Thats in the US at least. Outside the US it's pretty bad. There are a lot of places that don't take it once you leave the states.

Recently I got approved for the Platinum Card (I'm planning to travel more often) so what I did with this one to compensate the high price ($695) beside I use some of its perks, I charge each authorized user $175 (already have 3) although they don't have all the benefits that I do, they are going to take advantage of the Fee credit Global Entry ($100) and airport lounges etc. Therefore it's a WIN-WIN because it's worth it for them and BEST PART I'm only going to pay only $170 🙂

Certain gas stations don't accept AMEX and certain restaurants don't AMEX. Couple other businesses too, but I mentioned gas and restaurants due to the fact that those two are more common for general credit card use. Primarily AMEX isn't accepted due to the fact that their fees are too high.
