Most rock bands thought they were musicians, YES actually were very good musicians. Steve Howe was a genius on guitar. Chris Squire revolutionized the bass guitar as a solo instrument. Jon Anderson could actually sing very well and had incredible song writing poetic ability. Rick Wakeman was in his own class on keyboards, Bill Buford was very creative mixing jazz, rock rhythms and then some. To call YES a rock and roll band is like calling Rembrandt a painter. I was very blessed to grow up with their music and the perfection that it is. It never grows old because it is really so very good. The other thing about YES is that not only were their songs great they could actually perform them live extremely well, which was not the case for many groups and their music was 5 times more complicated. Still waiting for another group to come along that will rise to their level. I don't think it will happen.

Sadly it won't happen again because we will never see the context of the early 1970's rock environment (specifically 1971) YES were successful in many ways because they actually practiced their music ... according to history they could be called into studio by the BBC for a live show, be set up and ready to go with a tight set of music in about an hour ... unbelievable at the time

Me too, this record was my introduction to not only their older material from TYA but, also, I hadn't heard the studio versions of SK and CTTE before... I find them now to be sterile and a bit lifeless, while both of those on this album are simply bursting with energy

Saw them in Indy at the Armory a really small venue must have been 70 or 71, opening for Jethro Tull. I had never heard of YES. We were smoking hash waiting for Jethro Tull and YES came out a blew everyone away, been a dedicated fan ever since.

Lowell , you may be bigger than me but I'm the biggest YES fan. LOL! Anyway I saw them for the second time on this tour so hearing this album means so much to me but I do agree. You either feel YES or you don't. And if you do , it's something that words can't describe. We are very lucky to have been incarnated during their time and to have the YES gene in our DNA! It is something so special and specialized. A unique one of a kind moment in time!

This album was played over and over on one of those early record changers back in the day. I'd get really buzzed, put the headphones on (max) and felt like I was actually at the live show. Couple years later I saw them at MSG and I thought I was home listening with the headphones getting buzzed. Either way, it was easy to absorb they're music and shut the rest of world out. They were a few people I know that could get there. But most couldn't. They had a very unique and complicated sound and song, very talented as a group and solo artist. This 3 record 2 cd set to me is the best Live album EVER made. Zeppelin is a close second. Some bootleg Floyd is also up there. After that you could argue for a distant third.

+highspirit1 As a teenager back in the 70s, this album captivated me. Considering it was made over 40 years ago, it is technically brilliant, thanks to the brilliance of Eddie Offord on sliders and faders. No preprogrammed mods and expensive software. Just a mixing desk, Eddie and a spaghetti of cables.

You could enjoy them if only as a word salad with a melody.
    And WHAT a melody!

This album is one of the reasons the 1970's were the best era for rock music. What record company would take the risk of releasing a three album set (which is what Yessongs was originally) like this now? I venture to say none, never mind that there are hardly any popular bands now that have such a quality set of material to use for it. It was risky for Atlantic to do it even then but obviously the risk paid off. Yessongs cemented the band's place in the pantheon of groups that only played the biggest stadiums and concert halls all over the globe like Zeppelin, Floyd, Tull and ELP. For me, side 6 (no it's not a hexagon, it's a record album) is the best part of this set. Yours Is No Disgrace and Starship Trooper take what was already a great recording and push it to an Olympus Mons level.

This couldn't have been made in the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s...the 70s won't come around again. People in their 20s just aren't into the intellectual pursuits and are just too busy to care. Hip hop is easy, disposable and appeals to the base instinct. That's what the consolidators and gate keepers push. They ridicule this music.
These songs are brave and confident and speak to positive life experiences.

I saw them at a fairly small venue a couple of years ago. I knew that I had to see them one more time because I didn't think I'd get to see them again. Shortly there-after, Chris Squire died and for me, Yes died. Steve Howe and Alan White are still playing but, Squire was the only player to appear on every single Yes album. He kept the name alive.

Ahh, Back in the day. When there was the profit motive, but it hadn't snuffed out creativity and uniqueness! I grew up with Yes. I'm 60 now and I really miss not just Yes, but a time and world that could allow a band like that to exist.

Saw them at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ in 2000. Kansas opened for them, and that band was in rough shape. I was worried that I'd laid out good dollar for washed up bands... but when Yes played, they were in superhuman form. Even tighter than these recordings. I was floored.

Saw them live right before and after Fragile was released. They played at Lakeland Community College with Atomic Rooster opening. Pretty heady stuff for a 10th grader- but WAY cool.

One of the greatest bands alltime together with Pink Floyd and Genesis by whom i grew up with. I'm now 56 and i've heard little bands who can compete with this quality of symphonic and psychidelic rock. The only band who will come any near this level is Dream Theater. I can't stop listening and i think it will be a long time before anyone forgets this kind of music.

Just blew out my ear drums (using headphones) reliving this Yes concert. I saw them in 1970something in Greensboro, NC. I was an usher at the colisieum. I knew then and I especially know now how lucky I was to hear Yes. What musicians and what a band. Insanely good as someone says in the comments.
This concert and a Leon Russell concert are my 2 pics that came from out of nowhere for me. Leon Russell.... what a showman!!! His concert was like a tent revival. (I've seen showmen before. As an usher I saw Elvis 3 times. Also I've seen Bruce Springsteen 3 times.) Not an Elvis fan but those were seriously good.

Here Bill plays , Long distance runaround and the fish
At start I thought White was better than Bill , then listening again and again..
I said in my mind this drummer in an extra terrest.
I loved yes, and didn't know Bill was gone for King Crimson (and appeared in UK+genesis+gong, then his own group Earhtworks)
So during 5 years i didnt ear Bill, then I knew what he made during this time.
Bill Bruford is really an extraordinary drummer and musician.
He is the father of every modern drummer.

A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace
And rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace
And achieve it all with music that came quickly from afar
And taste the fruit of man recorded losing all against the hour
And assessing points to nowhere, leading every single one
A dewdrop can exalt us like the music of the sun
And take away the plain in which we move
And choose the course you're running
Down at the end, round by the corner
Not right away, not right away
Close to the edge, down by a river
Not right away, not right away
Crossed the line around the changes of the summer
Reaching out to call the color of the sky
Passed around a moment clothed in mornings faster than we see
Getting over all the time I had to worry
Leaving all the changes far from far behind
We relieve the tension only to find out the master's name
Down at the end, round by the corner
Close to the edge, just by a river
    Seasons will pass you by
I get up, I get down
Now that it's all over and done
Now that you find, now that you're whole
    [II Total Mass Retain]
My eyes convinced, eclipsed with the younger moon attained with love
It changed as almost strained amidst clear manna from above
I crucified my hate and held the word within my hand
There's you, the time, the logic, or the reasons we don't understand
Sad courage claimed the victims standing still for all to see
As armoured movers took approached to overlook the sea
There since the cord, the license, or the reasons we understood will be
Down at the edge, close by a river
Close to the edge, round by the corner
Close to the end, down by the corner
Down at the edge, round by the river
Sudden cause shouldn't take away the startled memory
All in all, the journey takes you all the way
As apart from any reality that you've ever seen and known
Guessing problems only to deceive the mention
Passing paths that climb halfway into the void
As we cross from side to side, we hear the total mass retain
Down at the edge, round by the corner
Close to the end, down by a river
    Seasons will pass you by
I get up, I get down
[III I Get Up, I Get Down]
In her white lace, you could clearly see the lady sadly looking
Saying that she'd take the blame
For the crucifixion of her own domain
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
    Two million people barely satisfy
Two hundred women watch one woman cry, too late
The eyes of honesty can achieve
(She would gladly say it amazement of her story)
How many millions do we deceive each day?
(Asking only interest could be layed upon the children of her domain)
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
In charge of who is there in charge of me
(She could clearly see the lady sadly looking)
Do I look on blindly and say I see the way?
(Saying that she'd take the blame
For the crucifixion of her own domain)
The truth is written all along the page
(She would gladly say it amazement of her story)
How old will I be before I come of age for you?
(Asking only interest could be layed upon the children of her domain)
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
    [IV Seasons Of Man]
The time between the notes relates the color to the scenes
A constant vogue of triumphs dislocate man, so it seems
And space between the focus shape ascend knowledge of love
As song and chance develop time, lost social temp'rance rules above
    Ah, ah
Then according to the man who showed his outstretched arm to space
He turned around and pointed, revealing all the human race
I shook my head and smiled a whisper, knowing all about the place
On the hill we viewed the silence of the valley
Called to witness cycles only of the past
And we reach all this with movements in between the said remark
Close to the edge, down by the river
Down at the end, round by the corner
    Seasons will pass you by
Now that it's all over and done
Called to the seed, right to the sun
Now that you find, now that you're whole
    Seasons will pass you by
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
I get up, I get down
