As a teen, I liked Yes. In my twenties I liked them a lot. From thirty to fifty, I was too busy to explore. Since fifty, they've moved on up my chart (Mount Rockmore status), and I feel privileged to explore their marvelous catalogue!
Your journey with Yes is similar to mine. I was late to the party so to speak. I didn't appreciate them fully enough in my teens and through my fifties. It is a sad regret. Yes has since become my favorite band of all time. I just spent literally the past 5 years listening solely to Yes, anything and everything available. It was an amazing journey. It's not quite over, but it is time to move on. I actually get a bit teary eyed now listening to songs like this. It is amazing how they can take a concept like being at an airfield and making it beautiful and compelling. My sadness now reflects the departure of Jon Anderson, and now the passing of Chris Squire and Alan White. I believe they had so much more music to share together. It reflects my own life journey, in that at age 65 I now feel the urgency to accomplish all that I am supposed to do and gifted for. You don't think like that even at age 50.
When my Mom listened to this, she immediately recognized it as a Yes song. Proof that Benoit David really nailed his vocals on Jon Anderson's level here.
Benoit David a fait un travail incroyable sur cet album et ses performances vocales sont justes et sensibles. Le défi était incroyable et il l’a relevé avec brio et de façon magistral.
Beniot David is the 2nd best version of this band. It's too bad he could not stick around. So much potential and talent. Yes never recovered after his departure.
Yes is one of my favorite bands. I just discovered this album, what a nice surprise. God bless all the Yes members, so much amazing talent. Thank you Yes for all your amazing music.
When it reaches that first chorus "And we can fly from here..." with Squire's descending bass lines undergirding, this piece takes off (pun intended!) and glistens every bit as bright as any Yes classic. And then to perfect the moment, Chris adds harmonies on the repeated phrase "We can fly", each one rising a step toward a wonderful resolution...nothing short of exquisite! Yes still had it - even in 2011 and without Jon Anderson!
PLEASE NEVER TAKE THIS DOWN. Benoit David's performance on this is spectacular. I like Trevor Horn a lot, but they never should have messed with this, they nailed it with Benoit David.

I have developed a life view that we are the creators of our own heavens and hells. I cannot site direct lyrics, but I am convinced this attitude (which has served me extremely well...) can be directly attributed to a life-time of listening to the music of Yes.
I’m a huge fan of Trever Horn and the Drama album, but I think this is much better than the newer version with Horn. Benoit is simply a better vocalist. His voice sits just right in the mix and perfectly cuts through the instruments. He also has some warmth and emotion in his voice which is different from Horns more angular approach. With that said, this album with either vocalist is the best Yes music since the early 1980’s. With low expectations I was shocked at how good this album was on first listen, and it’s held up brilliantly.
Check out keystudio which is the 7 new studio tracks from keys to ascension. That was also yes at it’s best with Anderson, Wakeman, Squire, Howe, White
Speaking of Yes since the 80's, Talk is terribly underrated. I especially like "Where Will You Be" and "Endless Dream". I personally think it's Rabin's finest hour with Yes, and feel it fits in well with the group's magical 70's tradition, albeit with a nicely updated touch. Wish they had continued in this particular vein but I suppose that's the turbulent nature of the band.
I first saw Yes in Byron Bay 2012 and i was blown away by their instrumental skills and song structure (unfortunately Benoit David was already gone by then). I had to seek their albums out. The first one i bought and listened to was Close To The Edge. Maybe i should've started off less intense but that album is my favourite and probably always will be.
There comes a certain point in this song, near the end, where I just have to say aloud, "Holy shit, this is good!" 30 years after their prime, with a new singer and a new songwriter, they came up with that old magic.
A big part of the suite was written during "Drama" sessions but did not make it to the album. I think "Sad Night at the airfield" may be the best peice of music that Geoff Downes wrote.
I'm glad I have a physical copy of the original CD with Benoît David, which is so much better than Horn's version. Thanks for sharing it, so more people can listen to it.
Still listening... -YES, YES, YES! The first time, I hear this album, and what should I say, its genial and I like the voice of Benoit David. One of my favorites of YES. @@ricardooliva4034 @Ricardo Oliva I can PLAY most of Yes's classic era stuff on both guitar and bass... My favorite song from Tales is "The Remembering", Yessongs is my favorite live album of all time and I've listened to it at least 100 times in its entirety... But none of that changes the fact that "Fly From Here" (the 6 minute title track of this extended track) is a masterpiece that I find even more musical than even "Close to the Edge", Gates, or "Heart of the Sunrise". Those songs are all much more technical than "Fly from Here" but in my opinion this is even more musical and shows the greater maturity of the band 40 years later even if Chris Squire was the only classic Yes member to get a writing credit... It's amazing to read these comments now. No band invokes so many different reactions and opinions as Yes. Like several have mentioned, I tend to prefer Jon Anderson to other vocalists in the band. However, this version is different. It is a masterpiece no matter who the singer is. It prompted me to revisit the Drama period, and I have found a new appreciation for it. The brilliance of Yes is they can make a song about a lonely airfield sound compelling. Genius! Whenever I'm looking for something to play for about 20 minutes, I pick this compilation. Or Awaken live.
Mr Benoit David ,Buggles & the Yes blokes did a fantastic job in Honouring a great deal of YES’ Spirit when giving this a 21st Century twist & airing. Having not heard Yes until Wonderous Stories was a uk single I can’t pretend I was there from the earliest days but this album stands alongside Astral Travellor ,South Side of The Sky , The More We Live Let Go , That That is & lots more of their fucking wonderful sound & brilliant timeless colourful rock music made by masters which anyone with a musical heart & soul can’t but love . 🏴❤️😁🐢🟩
Love the Chris Squire backing vocals on this album! I never saw Benoit David live in concert. I saw Jon Anderson 12 times and Jon Davison twice live. Both very talented live.
I enjoyed the Drama album with Trevor Horn's vocals. But, I think Trevor did a great disservice to Benoit David by replacing Benoit's vocals for a release of this album. BD's voice blended so much nicer with Chris' on the harmonies. Thank you for keeping this version of FFH available. RIP Alan White. The rock of YES for 50 years.
I have listened to Drama without vocals. It’s every bit as good as an instrumental and it’s easier to imagineJon Anderson’s vocals on it. Trevor Horn left because of the concert circuit. They Sold Out Madison Square Garden five straight nights on the Drama tour and no one left happy. They had to play the Classics an octave lower to accommodate Horn’s vocals. He had trouble early in the concerts, reaching Anderson’s range, but by the time they got to the end of the tour, they really had to make some adjustments because his voice was burnt out. so that was the end of that version of Yes. I called the band they have today Maybe.

@@PeterBrown-mz4nv There's sentimental value in letting Horn do his own vocals and add some Art of Noise flourishes, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the end product is better. There's a strong case to be made that the original is superior to _Fly from Here: Return Trip_ . Still, there's a hollow, unfinished quality to some of this material. Some of Steve Howe's guitar licks sound a little too sloppy. "Bumpy Ride" sounds like a demo, and the transition at the end of "Bumpy Ride" is jarring and forced, as if they had to meet a deadline and to stitch together what they had.
Does anyone else feel Genesis in Sad Night at the Airfield? Imagine Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford's 12-strings, and Peter Gabriel on vocals! That said, this is the only post-Drama Yes track I've been able to listen to the end of... and then another 3 times. Thanks for posting, and all the informative comments.
A mudança mais marcante no Yes se deu com a saída de Howe. Criou-se um outro Yes sendo Yes. Todas as mudanças para mim foram super válidas. Eles sempre continuaram a seguir um estilo próprio. Excelente banda
Superior version of Fly From Here, the one I love from the original album release in 2011. Absolutely perfect! The "Return Trip" version is, quite frankly, inferior. I know Trevor Horn wrote a ton of the song, but he doesn't accurately convey the emotional dynamics of the lyrics despite that. Benoit's emotive and dynamic expression is lofty, soulful, and so beautiful.
@@srb99100 It was Horn wanted to do. He wanted his vocals on another Yes album. He and Geoff Downs wrote the song. Don’t hate him for it. Both versions are beautifully done and Benoit and Trevor added their own personality to the song.
@@srb99100 According to Trevor's liner notes, he was invited to guest with the band and then at the gig, Alan White asked if Trevor would like to redo the vocals so that the Drama line-up would have another album.
This is a great album. There is only one thing missing: Jon Anderson's voice... Somehow, every time I listen to this album, I am subconsciously hearing Jon Anderson singing... It's a funny feeling, as if it ought to have been there - and it's not. Don't get me wrong - Benoît David's vocals are unquestionably great, too, but I would love to have had Jon on that album. Jon, if you ever read this - you and Yes belong together forever. Too bad, we all have to eventually pass away, and soon there will be no us... But the music of Yes will stay for ever! In our mind, and in our heart. Thanks for having given it to us!
I agree, Jack. But let's not be too harsh here. This is my first hearing this album (and Benoit David) and I think his vocals are good (but not great). I think I can get in to this album - it seems a bit of a return to the '70s Yes that I've always loved since those days. But, at the same time, I know what you mean about Jon. For me, Jon was always the spiritual, creative and motivational driving force of Yes. Yes without Jon is not the true Yes.
First time hearing this and totally agree - yes it is Yes, but then again it's not quite - it's very good but Jon has a Spiritual presence that lifts the soul to a level above. And I miss Rick Wakeman's keyboard also. That said, I can say I will listen to this and enjoy it!
if iam not wrong this album and this song came out years before its time i saw Yes in MSG during the question years with geoff downs it was a great show the longest ovations ive ever herd .
Return Trip was a total slap in the face to Benoit David in my view. It’s really sad what’s happened to Yes, especially after Chris Squire passed. In my opinion, Yes should’ve ended with this album, they would’ve gone out on top.
I honestly think they could've ended with magnification. This song had been floating out in the æther for over 30 years, and I'm glad it was finally released. It is a masterpiece. But to be fair, it's technically more of a Buggles song than a Yes song. Sure, Yes played it a few times in the early 80s, but the Buggles played it a few times more in the late 70s. Side note: I do think this album is better than Magnification, I just believe Magnification is more of a Yes album than Fly From Here. One thing we can all agree on is Heaven & Earth was hot garbage.
@@real.sugarcone: It's not just that it takes an investment in some listening time. Heaven & Earth actually is, admittedly, a bit below the usually high musical and melodic standards of YES. I think I read somewhere that Steve Howe is reputed to be a bit unhappy with it.
Unfortunately, Yes has a long history of treating ex-members like trash, going back to Peter Banks and Tony Kaye. They did the same with Patrick Moraz and Benoit David. But the one that totally takes the cake is Jon Anderson. Turfed from the band he helped co-found. I lost all respect for the remaining members of Yes after they did that.
The litmus test. Parts of that gave me chills like the classic early period . All I need to know. I had moved on from prog except pop prog by the time this came out. Thanks.
I think every person who played in the rock group "yes" should go out on tour separately so we can have 30 groups named "yes" on tour. Like a bunch of little kids that can't put their ego's aside and bring back the best rock group "ever" bar none.
I don't like the name being flung around with come and go great musicians. It can only be the real original band. Just never is the same. Yes different, and great too, but sorry chucky it aint yes. it is no.

Not one bar too many... It's a perfect 6 minute song... And everyone from Steve Howe to Alan White is just perfect on this track. Easily my favorite Yes track.
@@squirtlesquirtle94 ok. I understood. Except you can play all the bass and guitars parts. Maybe while you are sleeping. Sorry for my english, it is not my first language.
Glad to see someone else loves this too! Fly From Here is my favorite epic length. What would you say your favorite Yes epic length is besides this one?
@@ricardooliva4034he’s probably a younger fan like me. So we see the newer eras differently than some of the older fans might, though I have to say that even I gave up on this band after Chris died…
Estos 23 minutos son brillantes a los Yes clasico pero mas modernos,si señor.
Merci merci merci,retour à ma jeunesse pour c 23 minutes de bonheur❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
Great song. killer bass line!
Chris Squire knows what he is doing
Orgasmic track. Origin by the Buggles. The lads that did DRAMA before. And I love DRAMA. And I love both their Buggles Albums.
Just love Benoit David vocals.
Apart from Jon Anderson, Benoit was the best lead vocalist Yes ever had. The blend with Chris was beautiful.
agreed
Only because he imitates Anderson.
@@nonrepublicrat Of course, that’s the gig if you’re the singer in Yes. They all try to imitate Anderson. Benoit did it best.
Heard them live 2010 in Munich, had to go out an buy this album right the next day!
5:16 is my favorite part!
The vocals are amazing!
I've always loved that as well but I prefer when Squire handled those vocals himself as he did on the 1980 'Drama' tour.
*Yes - Fly From Here (2011)*
00:00 1. Fly From Here - Overture (Instrumental)
01:54 2. Fly From Here - Pt I - We Can Fly
07:54 3. Fly From Here - Pt II - Sad Night At The Airfield
14:44 4. Fly From Here - Pt III - Madman At The Screens
19:51 5. Fly From Here - Pt IV - Bumpy Ride
22:07 6. Fly From Here - Pt V - We Can Fly (Reprise)
I love this. Benoit David's vocals are superb and the music is great.
I saw them perform this live in 1980 although the song was not included on the Drama album
The last great Yes record, and this version smokes the later version with Trevor Horn. That needed to be said.
Trevor wrote this.
This album really calms me down when I'm having anxiety attacks.
Brilliant masterpiece!
It is fastly becoming one of my favs, never quite thought that I would ever care for someone replacing Jon, but Benoit took the reins with grace 😊😊😊
@@AlanWeissaltzagreed. Amazing material on this album. I’ll take it anyday over the 2 newest “Yes” albums from the 2020s…
Saw this tour in Toronto I thought for sure that Squire found the voice. David was truly wonderful.
It's wonderful to hear Chris Squire's runs. There's no replacing his genius.
Awesome piece of art. Greetings from Czech Republic!
Far better than their latest album
I have to say i prefer this version. Along with Magnification this is my favourite Yes album since 90125, and i think i prefer it to that.
agreed
A mudança mais marcante no Yes se deu com a saída de Howe. Criou-se um outro Yes sendo Yes. Todas as mudanças para mim foram super válidas. Eles sempre continuaram a seguir um estilo próprio.
Excelente banda
Supreme musicianship. 🖖
Glad to see this being appreciated. I thought nobody likes this album. But suddenly, people see the great music in it. Edit: I own the CD :)
Your not the only one
Same. Probably my favourite since Drama
Best versión of this álbum.
I saw this formation of yes live in Auckland new Zealand 2012 and bought a tee shirt it's now April 2023
And I saw this lineup in 2011 in St Petersburg Florida😊😊
Saw them in Florida 2011😊😊
Best version
Fantástica composición. La diferencia entre genios de la música y lo que producen los Millenium....Los Felicito
Sublime composing, production and musicianship. Not available today....😪
I just went back to listen to this album again on streaming services and CAN'T BELIEVE they touched the vocals on this. What the fuck?
I much prefer this version with Benoit David singing than the one with Trevor Horn. This sounds more like Yes to me. 👍🏻
Essa é a única e melhor versão desse Álbum. Eu amo esse disco
Ngl I like this and the Trevor Horn version equally for different reasons, I find both are good vocalists with different strengths and weaknesses
I will never understand why the group canned this incredible singer.
Benoit developed respiratory problems that resulted in his retirement from the music biz.
@@Gizathecat2 but why did they take a further step and re record the album with Trevor Horn’s vocals and not leave Benoit’s voice as is?
@@srb99100 It was Horn wanted to do. He wanted his vocals on another Yes album. He and Geoff Downs wrote the song. Don’t hate him for it. Both versions are beautifully done and Benoit and Trevor added their own personality to the song.
@@srb99100 According to Trevor's liner notes, he was invited to guest with the band and then at the gig, Alan White asked if Trevor would like to redo the vocals so that the Drama line-up would have another album.
What was the reason?
Yes is Anderson and Anderson is Yes. No doubt.
Andersons voice is transparent like a Gibson PAF. And it Floats in Zero Gravity. This Voice sounds great. Right on pitch, if you know what I mean.
Great album I'm happy with it listen alot.ive been a long time yes fan.
Thanks for sharing
Magical
Que album magnifico!!! Flying..
Lo mejor que escucho de los años 70 🎉😮
Ultra good music , there are a few blessed people
My favorite band
if iam not wrong this album and this song came out years before its time i saw Yes in MSG during the question years with geoff downs it was a great show the longest ovations ive ever herd .
Fly from here made me a better drummer thank you Alan❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
A tremendous track. Yes at its best.
Masterpiece !
@@real.sugarcone Agreed! Heaven and HELL. I tried, but I couldn’t do it.
@@TheReaperMan275 and yet they still try so hard to find singers who sound like jon
The litmus test. Parts of that gave me chills like the classic early period . All I need to know. I had moved on from prog except pop prog by the time this came out. Thanks.
This is probably the only piece of Yes music post-Anderson that I can tolerate.
I think every person who played in the rock group "yes" should go out on tour separately so we can have 30 groups named "yes" on tour. Like a bunch of little kids that can't put their ego's aside and bring back the best rock group "ever"
bar none.
Except the ego's there's also the money side of the story of course...
I don't like the name being flung around with come and go great musicians. It can only be the real original band. Just never is the same. Yes different, and great too, but sorry chucky it aint yes. it is no.
😊ジョン・アンダーソンも、ドラマもコレもいい〜😊
This sounds very good, just read about in an article about Geoff Downes. David really does have a nice voice.

i found the original 2011 one on amazon. CD for CDN $42.89, used thought so its something. i was looking for this for ages so I'm glad someone finally uploaded the original 24 minute track. last time herd this was in 2014. ill be bummed out if i come back and see this video has been taken down with the stupid frowny face.
Yes... One day..
Yes... Always
I purchased Return Trip a few months ago. I am really surprised how good this is with Benoit's voice. I had a chance to see Yes in New Orleans at the House of Blues with David Benoit, but being the Yes snob I was I sold my tickets. I now wish I had seen the show. I had no idea. I am going to see if I can find the Benoit version on line to buy.
Que música linda!
On a par with close to the edge😊 Beautiful, but honestly I'm freaking out, every morning I wake up singing fly from here in my head 😂😂
I'm with you on that, this masterpiece of composing is with me daily. 🖖🎼🎵🎶🎶🎵
i like it; groove after subtle change after wild change after groove;
YES! the original version
GENIUS !!!!
I love the boys, in all lineups ... but "Sad Night" was the last teary-eyed kick in the chest they gave me.
Even thought is impossible to replace Jon Anderson Benoit is the best "substitute".
Si , señor !
I guess I have alot of catching up to do I’m still stuck back in the Relayer era ha!!!!!!!
Beautiful piece. So different and yet so like Yes. Just like the Drama album was. It does sound like a follow-up to Drama, which in a way, it actually is.
YESISH is what this is. Not a bad name and not misleading.
Better than everything else the band put out after Drama.
