the critical detail is having enough money so you can actually enjoy driving the car rather than constantly worrying what you will do if something breaks
Myth #3: absolutely true. Just because it looks fast and goes fast, doesn't mean it has to be driven fast. Thanks so much for pointing this out as you both look extremely happy just cruising around under the speed limit
Myth #1 you may not be a millionaire to buy a super car but you have to be in the top few percentile points in terms of disposable income. A V10 R8 Spyder would be my realistic dream car (Audi lent me one for a week) let’s say 80k with 10% down over 5 years that’s £1400 a month (most ppl don’t have 8k for a deposit ) and budget £800 a month for tyres, insurance, brakes, fuel, servicing and repairs for a total of £2200 a month. According to the ONS the avg uk household has £780 a month disposable income after bills. The avg household rent/mortgage is £1200 a month, so your affordable supercar is nearly twice as expensive lol You may not be a millionaire on paper but to say supercars are affordable is the result of living in the UA-cam loads of money bubble, they simply are not viable for the vast majority, which is why we watch you talking about them.
Agree about the attracting blokes thing. Although, a few months ago when I pulled in to fill up, a lady who'd been driving behind for about 8 miles or so, did as well & came across the forecourt to say thankyou. She'd had her window down the entire way so she could hear the 'valves locked open' 360 properly.
All good points. Buy a supercar for the experience and sense of occasion driving it, and you can justify the running costs. You can also use it as motivation to get to whatever the next level is in your life. And for those who don’t know-Ferrari offers a warranty up to 15 years from manufacturer date. So while the warranty needs to be renewed annually, you can look at it as part of the running costs and avoid catastrophic issues.
Bonus myth: Results may vary is the best way to describe it. It’s a lot like bodybuilding, you’ll get way more attention from other blokes who work out but the women definitely notice it.
Is spring the best time to go to the highlands? My mum had Scottish Deerhounds and I grew up with paintings of the highlands, stag at bay etc. always wanted to go in a nice car.
I enjoyed the film guys, you and Ant have a very warm and natural chemistry. I have a R8 GT coupe tuned to 572bhp (reviewed by Jayemm recently) and I rented a Tesla Model 3 dual motor in the summer which was the daily. In outright straightline performance the cars are similar and I tested that with some hard 2nd and 3rd gear pulls with my bro behind the wheel of the Tesla. The R8 did pull away but not by alot. However, I left him for dead on corners and most importantly of all is the difference in how you feel behind the wheel of a supercar. So low to the ground, the seating position, the steering wheel position, the power delivery with such a satisfying reward at the top end of rev range and that noise... Oh yes, that screaming V10 right behind your head and of course those sublime downshifts. I need a cold shower....
I appreciate the the videos that detail super car ownership for the well off but not super wealthy (£500k-£1M). However, some quick math says James owns almost £400k in cars just between the three Ferraris… that’s a wild asset allocation for someone with
Had the r8 for 3 years now and it’s held its value fairly well. Hopefully 🤞 it will go up in price soon considering there not making this car anymore 😢
I dont agree at all with myth #1, 70-80k is a lot of money foe most people, even if you finance it will cost you a ton in interests But to be fair, if you are financing most of the value of the cars is because you cant really afford it
Agree 100% on all myths lol. I recently sold a r8 v10 after 9 years, warranty’s $500usd a year, retained 90% value , low running costs and the value is impossible to beat. I sold it coz i find the huracan perf spyder provide a more dramatic ownership experience (design and color) even tho it cost more than 3X more and is hard to rationally justify, and yet at the same time they sound too similar for me 55))? justify keeping both. 😅th supercar: anything after the 458 era isn’t pretty (except pista) and I don’t need a faster car; mclarens are a great bargain but u don’t lust over it (uncertain reliability, too similar between models, weak sound, low price of entry)… and upkeep on the lambo v12s are too high. It’s very common for my friends to spend 5-30k on each repair, and very few mechanics regularly work on them, those that do charge almost the same as official dealers who won’t hesitate to rob u.😢 unlike the owners who buy these v12s new and won’t blink at a 30k bill, pple like us buy them at fully depreciated rates will lose sleep over the same bill… but that’s what make one lust over it… u want cars that u can’t get and the lambo v12 is the no. 1 stunt car. I have to wait until I find a mechanic that’s affordable who works on them regularly…
If you think supercars are good for picking up men of a certain age, try riding a modern Triumph. Octogenarian gentlemen come running to ask if they're still made in the UK.
And a lot of them are dogs with huge bills, several UA-camrs have bought cheap VAG v10 cars and ended up looking at major problems and bills incl this channel and hoovie
Gen 1 Aventador, one day I shall own one. One day. Totally a heart-over-head desire and there’s a thousand reasons why I would be mad to buy one but, as you clearly pointed out, most owners are just passionate about their car. Doesn’t have to be justifiably to anyone else, only to the owner. 👍🏻
So true! According to the comments from people we've never met: we were born into money, family paid for everything and no hard work was involved because it was handed to us on a plate... Nothing could be further from the truth but I think it makes people feel better when they make those assumptions.
My jag XK8 got the most interest from the fairer sex. Including a lovely old lady who revelled in telling me about undertaking a Porsche at 150 in her old jag.
I think Myth 5 counts for any car bought by an enthusiast. Anyone who only cares about the power figure or the drag times over everything else is, to me, not a true petrol head. It's why Top Gear had the old "You're not a petrol head until you've driven a Lotus and an Alfa". Neither brand made the fastest cars, but Lotus' were the last word in handling purity and Alfa's are still a true Love/Hate relationship experience, because 'Cars are pain'. My own car, a '08 650i (No, I'm not trying to say it's a supercar, i know it's just a BMW), is a car I bought with Heart; I saw it, I wanted it. I drove it, I had to have it. I knew I could afford it and so I wasn't hurting myself financially, and it is everything I wanted. And even now, every journey, no matter how small or ordinary, is still something slightly special. It's not everyone's cup of tea, it's not that powerful given the engine size, nor is it that fast especially by modern standards, but I don't care in the slightest. I'm not trying to impress anyone with it except me. I want ME to look at my car and go 'Phwoar! I like that!!'. And I do. Which makes it perfect. As for Myth 3: An attitude I brought over from two-wheels (I had a full motorcycle license before a full car license); speed is fun, and there's a time and a place for it. Bikes are insanely fast, but if you're always speeding, then it's not fun any more. In fact, the faster my bikes got over the years as I upgraded, the less habitual speeding I do, because why should I need to prove I'm fast? And when I decide to poke the bike with a stick, I know it's going to well and truly blow my skirt up. And that makes it more fun.
Agree with everything you said: the biggest thing for me is how it makes you feel to own and drive. I like getting the most special version of an already interesting/unusual car that I can, even if it's largely indistinguishable from the more common variants. Always been a big fan of the 6-series like yours and wanted a 650i for years. I finally got a 2007 BMW M6 but it's one of the 703 they made with a 6-speed. Basically nobody is going to see the stick/realize it's 50%-100% more expensive than an otherwise identical V10 M6, but that's part of the fun. Same with my 2009 G8 GXP 6-speed - it looks very similar to other G8's that cost 1/2, 1/3, or even 1/4 as much. But I enjoy a rare classy sleeper 6-speed and the fact it's 1 of only 800 they built is known by nobody while I'm cruising around in it. I got the car for me; not to attract attention/impress people.
Great! 👍🏻 So true… you own and drive these cars just for the fun! To buy or lease a new X5 or S Class is much more expensive (and boring)… driving my Scuderia is a kind of cleaning out my brain and soul! Beaught an e46 M3 recently for daily driver next summer… love your work! Keep going! 😊

Also mostly agreed on the ladies myth sadly. Almost every guy will look, especially as the Larini exhaust announces my arrival with a fanfare, but it seems almost invisible and silent to most females. What I do get is ladies waving their hands and telling me angrily to slowdown in villages... "but I'm only going 20 love.." Most irritating!
I just have a Boxster and my feeling is most people don’t like you because you have a nice car. God know what it’s like with a Ferrari. I have people in mini’s and hatch backs doing stupid things all the time to get past you. Whether it’s jealousy or the fact that you can have an impractical car like that even though it wasn’t that expensive. I didn’t buy it to impress anyone, I love cars and know the Porsche history.
Got an 8 year old cayman 4 years back, and was really surprised at the jealousy it created at the CrossFit gym I was at. People I considered to be mates who I’d done cheaper work on making comments about it and being cunts. You’d never be able to daily a properly nice car like a Ferrari unless you had secure parking at work and didn’t travel for work at all. Shame really you grow up wanting a nice car you get grown up and realise it’s a lot more work than it looked !
@@stu4181 yeah, you are absolutely right, I got comments at work turning up at work with a Porsche. I am just a care assistant, especially management asking who owns the Porsche? They don’t like a mere care assistant driving a car like that. People think it costs a lot more than it did. You can’t beat the Boxster/ Cayman for value. They drive fantastic, reliable, mine has been so far! Sounds awesome! The interior is pure class and a pleasure to sit in.
The salient point is having £80k spare cash to get on the ladder lol. My bucket list car is a Porsche Cayman 4.0 gts manual with the classic flat six before they disappear as electric or hybrid take over. Not a full fat super car but close enough 😎 Bonus Point 4 same with bikes, particularly British bikes at petrol stations, old boys come over to talk to you about how it was in their day 👍 Great content 😎👍
Interesting that you note that there are many cars that are faster these days than suoercars. That, and the fact that you can get big horsepower pretty cheap now. Sometimes people will ask you about your cars “numbers” -HP, 0-60 etc I bought a gt3 991.2 and paid up for it. To non-car people they are often surprised that the car only has 500HP and (manual transmission) is just under 4 seconds for 0-60. A Shelby Mustang with better numbers at half the price - let alone the new Z06 costing less than my older used GT3. Even Mercedes offers AMG models besting HP etc GT3 at half the cost. So advice I’d give to super car owners is that they should be aware of these stupid conversations with “magazine drivers” who don’t get it.
Another great video but whilst not having to be a millionaire they aren’t cheap. You have to be on a reasonable amount to afford one. For a start you’ll find the supercar is a second car so you’ll at least have another daily car. I’ll also say that you’re not likely to own a supercar and your daily be cheap. The difference is just too much. I at one time had an F355 and a Rover 25 as a daily. That didn’t last long. The next 18 months in I was running four cars and they were Italian. 😄
As nice a car the R8 is. The R8 is not a super car. The jag xk8 and merc SL can be had with a v8 they’re not super cars either. The above are all nice v8 convertibles with 2 seats.
Hello there English ice cream youngsters : it should be indeed very strange finding anyone on YT not confirming R8 GT is an exceptionnal car, even given it's mamouth's weight. I would say that, if driven like a 80's youngster, you could place it seconds behind a Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport and Lambo Gallardo SL. So but why in the world would you push this GT above ? I mean, who would want to get closer to hell's gates ? Side note : if you drive it a bit more on the edge your are faster than an old McLaren F1 GTR. Read again.
Well, you may not need to have millions in your account ‘per se’. However, supercars fall into the category of luxury goods. Let's face it. Most of the time they are not appreciating in value. It's the other way around. You are spending with maintenance, spare parts, insurance, fuel, and other costs, all of that while your car depreciates. If you are spending more on amenities than on investments, you are impoverishing yourself on the long run. Take in mind that "car youtubers" don't use supercars as a hobby. It's their job. Those are capital goods to generate revenue through content and other form of sponsorship. Of course, car manufactures are interested in this type of narrative. They can sell more products to a slightly broader audience. Please, don't fall for those kinds of traps. Set your goals and one day you can enjoy those goods without going bankrupt.
Supercar is a slippery slope these days.... Most F-types with a supercharger can make 500hp...tuned or v8... All 992's are quick... The basic C8 has 500hp and is mid engined An M3/4 is blindingly fast... An emira looks the part and drives it.... The new AMG coupes.... And so on....and everything can only be bought by rich people now...Tesla's are now "cheap"...go figure...

First, when you're a kid, you look at the speedo and say WOW it goes 180. Then, you start driving and it is TOP TRUMPS because this or that car has a better 0-60 time. After a while, you just get older and your opinion becomes more subjective as per this youtube piece. Money does matter when buying an aspirational supercar. However, I would rather chat with a £15k car owner who has a real love and enthusiasm for their car than a £250k car owner who sees it as a status trinket.
We agree, money does matter... Just not as much as many people may think for used ones, especially when you take account of depreciation on an equivalently priced new car. Thanks for watching and commenting. It's much appreciated!
Take a Lamborghini wrap it in a ugly Audi TT wide body kit .. you have the R8 Flame me all you like, this thing is ugly, the TT is ugly but it's much cheaper and made for people who want a flash Golf This is for people who can't afford the Lamborghini, but still want to show off
I could afford a Lamborghini, only the GT was the better, rarer, more special car. I think you'll find lots of people who disagree with you... Clarkson, JayEmm, and most experts on the subject... But each to their own I say.
'Supercar' in title yet has a picture of a R8 - everyone knows it's not a super car and nobody agrees it qualified. Non comprende. I don't think any bird is gonna be interested in a old r8 either.
I might agree with a normal R8. But the GT I definitely think is special, rare, and different enough that it qualifies. But yes, might be very much on the border.
@AntoniusTyas I didn't call galardo a super car however its a lamborghini so it's already winning over a R8. GT means nothing its just a marketing gimmic

Myth #1 you may not be a millionaire to buy a super car but you have to be in the top few percentile points in terms of disposable income.

I bought a gt3 991.2 and paid up for it.
VVS seems pretty good. CTR go there as well and may well be my first super car shop
I wouldn't read into me buying from them too much. I personally would be unlikely to buy there again.
The basic C8 has 500hp and is mid engined
An M3/4 is blindingly fast...
An emira looks the part and drives it....
The new AMG coupes....
And so on....and everything can only be bought by rich people now...Tesla's are now "cheap"...go figure...
if the Emira is a supercar is the Evora a supercar?
It's not always about power. None of those cars are supercars or ever will be
Vans cost £50,000 + so it sounds true
Audi r8 is not a supercar
Another Myth the R8 is a supercar

Audi r8 is not a supercar...its just a sports car... 😅
👍
Tesla is better than a supercar because it’s fast?
Would you rather have a mircowave burger or a proper bbqed one?
There’s your answer
Dude fix your house up, buy a 420R and do some serious driving 😉
Is a C7 RS6 a supercar, or is that just wishful thinking? 😂 if it is, I'm CERTAINLY not a millionaire 😂
sadly not
it's a family estate with supercar like drag times
I do want one
@@theofficialstig I guess I'll take that instead 🤣
Take a Lamborghini wrap it in a ugly Audi TT wide body kit .. you have the R8
Flame me all you like, this thing is ugly, the TT is ugly but it's much cheaper and made for people who want a flash Golf
This is for people who can't afford the Lamborghini, but still want to show off
What kind of drug are you on ?
@snarfcat we disagree... ua-cam.com/video/dIE0FCZ9zzM/v-deo.html
I could afford a Lamborghini, only the GT was the better, rarer, more special car. I think you'll find lots of people who disagree with you... Clarkson, JayEmm, and most experts on the subject... But each to their own I say.

Amazing what people will say when brown envelopes are involved
@@JayEmmAndFriendsI know I am in the minority because you also love the flash Fiats
'Supercar' in title yet has a picture of a R8 - everyone knows it's not a super car and nobody agrees it qualified. Non comprende. I don't think any bird is gonna be interested in a old r8 either.
I am interested. And if you can call a Gallardo LP560 a supercar, you can call R8 GT a supercar. End of.
@@DaleSteelGT is absolutely not a marketing gimmick you grumposaurus Rex
I'd say an R8 V10 is a supercar for that engine alone. The V8 R8 is more akin to a sports car like a 911 or a corvette
