Hi Brent, another excellent video. Can you do a follow up to discuss the "why" an airbox works better vs a pod filter? Please take a look at how different the connection between the airbox and carb is in Piaggio 2 stroke scooters. Even in stock piaggio scooters that tube is very short, the curve part has a specialy profiled section of the curve (not circular all the way)and acts like a part of the carbs venturi stack. Also the airbox outlet to the tube is profiled like a velocity stack inside. The airbox on piaggios also seems to have quite larger volume. There are two inlet passages to the piaggio airbox and they have different lenghts. I guess it has to do with intake resonant frequencies. It always seemed to me like the piaggio intake system is much more detailed and much better thought out than that on minareli.

The new carb probably just needs to be tuned. This is a pretty common issue, where someone believes it is a bolt-on replacement but it does need more attention. If they are the same carb, you may be able to swap the main jet from the old one into the new one and get a better result. Sometimes it's that easy, sometimes you have to go through a tuning process. Here's more info than you probably want about carb tuning : www.49ccscoot.com/faq/carbtune.html
So I work with these 49cc/69cc motorized bike engines. The kit comes with a very basic carb which is called the NT carb. The carb has a very small airbox which is really just a filter mesh with plastic holding it. Can subtle performance gains be made using an airbox? What would be the alternative for our engine kits? Or will slapping on a cone filter and calling it a day be the only practical solution?
If the filter isn't good, then at least you could build a simple box to hold a good filter and have the benefit of proper air filtration that would be quieter and probably a bit less sensitive to atmospheric changes than just a pod filter. If you want a proper airbox then there's a whole lot of design involved and it would be easier to adapt something from a similarly sized engine.
Hi man. The minarelli airbox on my scooter cracked right at the neck where the rubber connects to the the carb. I have the snorkel off since i had this scooter. Not sure if gluing it will work well. Not really keen on buying a new airbox yet as it is only a few months old.
You could try plastic welder or epoxy. If it's the rubber piece that is cracking, then you can get replacements for just that. You may even be able to replace just the part of the airbox that cracked if it's the plastic.
When it comes to Yamaha scooters with the horizontal Minarelli, it seems like there are two different snorkel sizes. The snorkel is mostly a silencer, I have the larger unrestricted snorkel on my airbox and it quiets the intake side down significantly.
My Yamaha had the smaller snorkel, from some short research it's apparently meant for the light moped version of the scooter, that's restricted to go only 25kmh/18mph. For some reason my normal Yamaha had the light moped air box with the tiny snorkel. Removing it did wonders for acceleration! The light moped version's hole diameter is only about ~1cm/0,4in.
yeah, at one point i also shared your belief in that air boxes dont impact performance in any meaningful way.... until i got some substantial time on a dyno. even with a large gokart air box designed to work on two strokes, with quad venturi inlets and optimal flow, the pod style air filters still are a better option.. im talking that i gained 4 horsepower, went from 19whp to 23 whp on a 70cc engine simply by switching from an airbox to a pod filter. every dyno operator and tuner ive met, have similar results anywhere from 2-8 hp difference

hey there! awesome work!!
im struggling on my SR50 atm. got a dellorto VHST 24mm carb mounted forwards and was using a flextube with an airbox.
this flextube >> www.scooter-attack.com/de/kaufen/ansaugschlauch-flextube-sandtler-50mm-glasfasergewebe-mit-federstahlspirale-1-meter-63138
I used a very robust tubing with mine, largely for reliability concerns. It's thick rubber and strong steel reinforcement. That said, I wouldn't expect it to deal with enough vacuum to distort even more flimsy tubing. I wonder if that could mean your airbox or tubing is otherwise too restrictive.
Hi! What carb do you have?
25mm DellOrto PHBL
@@49ccscoot You don't think about to get a bigger carb? 28 or 30?
@@tomdesign3919 I was thinking about it... and then I got stuck at home so I don't really care ATM. Started a new project till it's OK to joyride.
@@49ccscoot It's okay! Keep up! I want to build one too but in AM6! And your little video season is help me a lot!
Do you know you can just weld that airbox plastic? Its PP, just use a stronger solder pen and you can make any modification you want eg. new brackets!
So I hear. I've tried before on other parts and apparently plastic welding is not my thing.
