What's it like to be a Cybersecurity Student?

- Is going to school for a "Cybersecurity Degree" really worth it? Today I outlined six main ideas into what it's like to be a student in the I.T. security industry. My hopes are that the six main ideas I outline will give you insight into what it's really like in the security realm.
Saying the word "cybersecurity student" can be a bit misleading... Just go look at the comment section of my "Day in the Life of a Cybersecurity Student"... Many individuals want to believe cybersecurity is one fixed set of skills, talents, or qualities... It's not. Remember that being a cybersecurity student one place in the world doesn't necessarily mean you learn the same content on the other side. These six main ideas can be applied to all curriculums.

I'm a SOC analyst and I use Windows. Why? Because the business uses it and that makes us an Active Directory shop. Windows makes it easier. But what about Kali/Linux? It's called virtualization: everyone, whether they use Windows or not, uses Virtualization software at work to run those machines on their host.
All those people that criticize you for not using Kali are mostly skids that haven't written single line of code in their life... and probably know nothing about what CyberSec is in general

Anyone who uses Kali as their native OS has no idea what they’re doing. Kali, by default, is a horrible OS. It’s a penetration testing distribution, and everything runs as root and it’s actually not that secure to begin with. Also considering it’s just Debian with a bunch of offensive tools, people who use it as a daily driver typically have no idea what they’re doing and have imposter syndrome!
@@connormcgarr1780 I agree, but there are people using it as main OS but in that case most of them have another PC/Laptop only for that usage.
I find it the whole thing interesting. Seriously, people know one thing about "cybersecurity" and they think they know it all. "LINUX is KING..." Don't get me wrong, I am not a huge fan of Windows myself, however, it makes my life easier for the day to day activities.
Using Kali as your daily driver is just plain stupid xD I do agree tho that using windows isn't much better 😂 I recently bought a laptop and installed Linux in it and have been using it daily and doesn't bother me at all. I thought I would still use my desktop at home which still has windows for other things, but surprisingly I haven't.
I'll still setup a Windows VM for other stuff in case I need it tho.
Hey bud, just recently found your channel and I have to say I like your content. As someone already established in a career (completely unrelated at that) and now pursuing a degree in cyber security I find your videos very informative. Keep up the good work, I'll be watching while I make my way through this adventure of school and a full time job haha!

On the topic of the video, I did two telecomms modules back in 2nd and 3rd years of my study, it was so out of my interest at the time, just like you say in the video it's all about what you're interested in. Though I don't think many people discover their interest as early as you did!

I am 12 years old but for some reason I am so intrigued about cybersecurity, I already know 3 programing languages (Python, Javascript and c ++)
Please stay interested and you can never be too young or too old to get started. We need you. Major shortage and AI is far from ready to automate much of the work.

Most certainly!
Strongly wouldnt reccomend it. If you work for a firm they will want you on Windows possibly linux through Vm's.

You don’t really need math for cybersecurity. You may need it for cryptography or computer science but that’s really it
