  • Money comes and goes but TIME is non-refundable. Michael challenges us to consider if we are spending ours how we want and to start using time as our primary currency. He now travels the world full-time living out of a backpack aiming to inspire people to live more intentionally! Michael is an award-winning designer, a traveler and speaker. He’s spent the last decade in the industry as a motion designer and animator working with major brands like Nike and Sony as well as start-ups and social enterprises. Two years ago, in a quest to redesign his life he decided to ditch the hustle culture, embraced minimalism and has been traveling full time, living out of a 30L backpack ever since. His goal is to help people re-evaluate the way they spend their time and resources and to start living more intentionally. His next project is about creating sustainable and affordable housing and a co-living community from shipping containers, addressing to people who are finding the cost or availability of suitable housing preventative for the life they want to live. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    great talk. i went out my way to pick a job i could do that could earn me decent money yet only 6 months work needed a year, the other 6 months mines to do as i please. i have achieved this and at 51 consider myself semi retired. im not rich and i could have a lot more if i worked the full 12 months but whats the point, time is more valuable wh knows what the future holds, infact we do know what the future holds we just dont know when we will reach it. i didint want to be that guy retiring at 67 and to ill or dying at 68 to do all the things i wamt. i started this new life at about 40 i couldnt contemplate dragging myself outta bed at 7am in the dark and rain when i would rather stay in bed till midday.

    Worth viewing, good message and delivery :), 5/25 sounds like a good rule. It's very important to focus your time!

      Thanks Jerry, I'm glad you like the message. That 5/25 rule is always a great thing to jump back to once or twice a year as we're constantly changing the things we desire as we go through time. Glad you like the talk :)

    When inspiration comes full circle! Great talk fella. Now let’s see if I can apply this concept of time coins to a mortgage, 2 kids and a wife :)

    • @Michael_Tierney

      Thanks Rob! Glad to hear it! Sure I would recommend starting with the 5/25 rule. I only focus on 2 things which makes things easier. Also, developing your skills as a designer to trade less time coins for more money (higher day rate/salary) then you can take more time off or go part-time. There are so many options but gaining clarity on what we actually want in life is the first step of many... This may take some time ;) but it's worth it when you get it.

    Very interesting system and TedTalk... You make some great points... puts a lot into perspective... and I too still hear from family all the time the infamous quote, "When I win the lottery..."

    I suggest the title being changed to "The Art of Spending Time as a Single Guy."

    So this only works if you are a freelancer and can manage your own time. If you are an employee it doesn't matter which phone you buy. You're still gonna work 40 hours a week.

    • @Michael_Tierney
      @Michael_Tierney 5 років тому +10

      Negotiate a payrise then your 40 hours are worth more in money. Or spend time in the evenings to learn a new skill.

      @@oDannyMitchello I wouldn't say so. It depends on what you want and how you define "success" as an individual. Loose example: If you want a good body then sacrifice an hour watching Netflix and do some jumping jacks, sit-ups etc. Those looking to get a foot in this approach can start with Warren Buffett's 5/25 Rule to narrow down what they want and really focus their time in the correct areas.

      @@Michael_Tierney most people cannot just negotiate a pay raise. In most workplaces thats a way to fast track getting laid off.
