Soo Line And Burlington Northern in Minneapolis

  • In February 1986 I shot this video at Northtown Yard in Northeast Minneapolis. In this video you will see the Soo's Grove Job switching the Ford parts plant. Note the lack of graffiti on the cars. Cabooses were still common. This place as you will see could get busy!

    Trains ( like everything else ) was just so much cooler in the 80's. Jesus look at this yard , it looks like a layout set there 's so much ! AWESOMRE VIDEO SIR

    Fantastic video 🤠. My dad told me about all of your video collection on UA-cam. Especially the footage from the late 1970s when he was still in high school. I enjoyed watching them as it gave me a sense of how railroading was back then (since it was way before I was even thought of 😆) Again fantastic work! 🤠

    Richard I lived 3020 Polk St. Big white Triplex. My brother and I used to train a red tail hawks in that area off of saint Anthony Boulevard Columbia Golf Course. The golf course used to have us come in and catch a lot of the Gophers that were eaten up the PVC pipes. And also there was an area where there's a lot of ring neck pheasants. Along Central Avenue. Also they moved a lot of corn and wheat from those grain elevators. Good old grainbelt beer. Edison high school . 1976 this day's are just a memory.

    This video shows to the extreme the adage of "look both ways for trains!" Being from a rural area, we don't have the traffic that Northtown Yard and Humboldt Yard have, but nonetheless, I always try to be aware of my surroundings when railfanning. It is a lifesaver. Thanks so much for posting this.

    Those GP30s... with their Turbos... really made the end of the 567s... the pinnacle! Always sounded like they were winding up and ready to lay down the power. All railroads ran the wheels off of them... never heard of any complaints from crews.

      Soo Line’s decision to put these ALCO-GE B trucks under their new GP 30’s was a bad one. Maintenance savings never materialized because of the trucks’ age and the full power of the locomotive was not realized. Soo Line’s GP35’s were also afflicted with these trucks but the GP35 had its own set of nightmare problems that earned it the title of “The Most Hated Locomotive in America” even without the addition of the antique and obsolete electronics. The 645 and plug-in modules were still a blip on the horizon so the Soo was stuck with their poor decision for a long time

    The osterberg's was an engineer mechanic on these Burlington Northern diesels for many many years John osterberg. 🇺🇸👍👌🙏

    It's really ironic that last clip you have the cp rail flat car next to the Milwaukee road caboose because the soo took over the Milwaukee road and few years later the cp would take over the soo line.

    Graffiti was not widespread until after 2000. Most of these box cars have been repainted apparently, because those railroad schemes are not seen today.

      They're not seen today because most of those railroads have been merged into other railroads. Its a shame. I miss the old Soo
