Very nice surprise, thank you Suzuki! But seriously: when you are already updating the engine with new valves, camshafts, exhaust system, electronics etc... would the implementation of a six-speed gearbox really have been an unsurmountable technical difficulty?
I don’t think it’s a technical issue, more of a cost issue - I’m pretty sure that would have jacked the price up further- they probably made an internal estimate of price, versus engineering cost, against how many they’ll sell. I’m pretty sure this is the only model with that engine… I’m not sure about the following, but I think a change of that order would mean more emissions testing, which may jack up the price again.
@@martyn_g You’re probably right about the increase cost but they’ve failed to upgrade one of the top two things former DRZ owners have asking for. The SM would have been in contention for my next bike if they’d put on a wide ratio 6-spd.

This is awesome! Way to go Suzuki! Please bring back the LTZ400 and LTR450! Yamaha needs some competition in the sport quad segment. The interest is there!
For years, all people have asked for is a sixth gear. That’s it. Didn’t need stability control, or engine map changes, or a new tiny headlight. Literally just the same bike with a sixth gear. Way to drop the ball right on the one yard line.
Now waiting with impatience for the DR 650 SE.Come on SUZUKI you can do it...With kind regards from a sad DR owner who sold his beautiful DR and is regretting it since 15 years.I live in a country with EU regulations.
The DRZ400S was my first road-legal bike in 2006 when i was 19. I kept it untill 2020 with many great times. I did own other bikes along side it and honestly, the only issue i had with the DRZ was the transmission. I bought a '21 690E a few years back and while it was double the price, it was worth it. I put the ACT wide-ratio gearset in my DRZ and it made it more versitile but it was also over $1,000 to do. I assume the bike doesnt have a 6-speed as to not compete with the DE adventure bikes, and a market analysis that shows people will still buy it. Unless it is under $8G USD, im not in the market.
Finally Suzuki! Not a fan of TC or abs but I get you need it by law in some markets. As long as the bike remembers when you turn it off it's fine by me.

Seriously been waiting on a new DRZ for a long time. Loved my old one. BUT the bike doesn't make enough power to need all those nanny's ....if you can't handle a bike less than 50hp then get a different bike. All bike needed was 6th gear, fuel injection, more power and better suspension. The end.
