i love how honest you are. most people wouldnt even admit that they do sponsored ads for the money, they just completely avoid the topic at all times. love the content.
watching this I had flashbacks to when as a kid we would fish for jack smelt off the pier in Pacifica. My dad would fry them up with onions and peppers. My granddad would beer batter them and cook them like fish and chips.
I remember the first time I came across this channel, I saw an Asain man in a cowboy's hat and I said what's this. I watch the video and I said to myself, this guy is going to be popular. 95k sub later, my words holding true. Best nor-Cal youtube channel. Fisherman's life and Philosophy D are good channels, but Outdoors Chef Life is BEST...imo
i love how hes honest with saying hes gunna be doing sponsor videos to help the channel even more some people think doing sponsorships is selling out but i wish the best for anyone much love cheers
Been watching you since you started out. You are the reason why my boyfriend (another viewer) started to go fishing and foraging in California. We love your video's and would not have a problem with you doing sponsored videos. Just like everyone else that gave you support and advice, we support your decision to do sponsored videos. Just don't work yourself out, it's hard to do a full-time job. Your laidback attitude in your videos are refreshing. Keep up the great work! Oh! Consider doing merch. We would totally buy them. :3
The dark part is the belly fat. I scrape all that off as well. It tastes a bit bitter. And I agree with your assessment. Jacksmelt is definitely far from the best tasting fish, but is still pretty yummy when fresh and properly cooked
Taku take your time on creating content. Your health and well being is more important. We don’t mind sponsored videos because you are awesome and are not a sell out.
I know this is an old episode, but it was the first time watching it for me as a relatively new subscriber. It's awesome to see how you have achieved all of your goals and are one of the best content creators on youtube. Thanks Taku for this and all of your incredible content!
I'm a fairly recent subscriber, but I've been watching your channel for the last year. I truly enjoy the content even though I live on the east coast. You and Fisherman's life are the two best west coast fishing channels I've seen.
Bro. Theres some awesome old vets that fish out on the old pier in Hilo that catch and cook every day. But on the real I would LOVE to see you in Japan! Like kicking it with the locals on the shore, making some dashi and rocking some fish cooking that we can never see in Cali. But know this: No matter what you do we got your back. Its you that makes this channel so good.
Sponsors are great as long as it doesn't take too much of your time. What you are doing without the sponsors... And I admit with less money, Is to take the time to show your sincerity, teach people to obey the law, and enlighten them with the way that the world chooses to cook. It's a great thing. Choose your sponsors carefully, I notice that when you start getting a lot of sponsors, the qualities of these vids goes down. Good luck .
Yes. Would love to see one from the Gulf or Cajun country...gotta love the Salt Life! P S. Great video bout the radish pods as my garden ones seeded out.
good trick would be to shorten vids and put out more(if he wants more subs and a better monetization on making money from views) ive seen a few channels stagnate in progress when releasing long videos but only once or twice a week or less.
Seriously! You don't have to prove you have street cred! You already have it! Any sponsors you take are being blessed by you! None of us out here in UA-cam land would mind at all!
Oh man what a life. Nothing better than catching and cooking/eating your catch by the place you caught it in nature. I'd be a happy man if I could do that for the rest of my life. Thanks for the simple yet inspiring video!
You're doing great Taku! My daughter and I always enjoy your videos! Thanks for always keeping it real! Also thanks for sharing your knowledge on foraging and cooking what you catch.
i have no idea how I found this channel but for months I’ve been watching you and would totally be (like many others) be cool with you doing sponsored videos!! You’re one of my favorite creators to watch even though I rarely fish and quite frankly am scared of handling live fish lol. Your content is soooo satisfying and it’s nice to see someone resourceful and conscious of the the earth around them. Thanks for being so great and don’t forget to not get burnt out of stuff gets too hectic!🌟
Hey Taku, not sure if you read comments much. I watch a bunch of UA-cam and I will say this and I don't comment that much. You are always positive, informative and what seems to me as an awesome chef. I love getting ideas for food from your channel. Thanks for what you do. Keep up the hard work brother!
I caught a nice sized smelt while crab fishing today. Bleed it, and gutted at the pier. Put on ice immediately. Cooked in a Japanese fish grill at home. My son, who doesn't seem to like anything but fish for his meals gobbled it up. I really don't understand why this is such an under-rated fish. They're delicious, and due to little demand.... highly sustainable.
Came through about 3 weeks ago and was disappointed I didn’t find you sooner. Been binge watching the content and by god, please do sponsored vids so you can do more. Sponsored vids you agree with and standby that is. Seen a lot of Tubers put their names behind something just to have the sponsored income. Your vids are fantastic, love your personality and character. Keep doing you.
Recommendation: 99-Islands kayak trip in western Japan (saikai) off Sasebo. Hundreds of small islands to catch, cook, and camp. Easy to catch sazae snails that are AWESOME grilled with some shoyu.
YES! you should definitely travel with this catch and cook style youtube show. Maybe start with traveling all the coasts of North America, including Mexico in van or truck camper. Then head overseas. Your approach is honest and down to earth, try to keep it that way just change the locations. If you can try to keep your travels low cost and share how you did it with us other wannabe catch and cookers who would like to visit other destinations. For instance I'd love to camp the Baja fishing the whole way around it. Start in Ensenada in Nov, circle the peninsula and be back north for Spring time. There would many miles of surf fishing and free camping. How cool would that be.
Your content is amazing my dude. Look forward to every video. I’m a cook enthusiast myself and love to learn new things which is what you provide. Do whatever you need to do to push this channel as far as you can, we’re all here for you brother! Keep it up!
I’m living vicariously through you so whatever happens, DONT STOP MAN! Awesome videos, u always seem so cool and down to earth. Ill be here to congratulate u on 10mil some day 🤗
Get some money! This channel is awesome. The last jacksmelt I ate was when I was teaching fishing at a summer camp in Berkeley. We grilled it over some coals and served it on a log. Your's looks much better haha.
I like Smelt. I prefer it over surf perch. Cook it in soups. It can have difficult bones for those who don’t know how to enjoy eating fish that are boney. Good job. Surprised you caught one in the surf zone. Usually they can be found of jetties, piers and from boat. Keep up the great content.
Hey Tacu, catching and cooking in Hawaii is brilliant. We learned how to spearfish in Maui and it blew our minds. So many fish! and you can take your time to target the species you would like. We made a couple videos about camping, spearfishing and making sushi in Maui, they're early videos but you'll get the picture. Thanks again for the great content from Jeff, Rose and the girls
I learned a great recipe from my grandpa for smelt. Me and my niece use to catch them off the pier in new port beach ca. Prepare it exactly like you did. Salt, pepper, garlic powder. Get bisquik or pancake flour and shake n bake style in a bag. Fry it in butter medium heat. Squeeze some lemon juice on top 👍
Wow u have come so far get it it I’m so proud of you you have worked hard to get to where you are blessings on blessings my friend keeping pushing for greatness!!!!
Go get them sponsorships and do whatever you gotta do. Follow your dreams, enjoy life, don't force it everyone is going to keep on loving the content as long as you still love to make it and are happy. 👍
Man, almost 100k subs, seems like you had 10k a few months ago. (Been following you from the start) Love seeing your channel grow and seeing the local spots. Keep up the awesome videos when you have the time.
I’m reading some comments asking for merch and I totally agree!! Id love to support you and would totally get some merch!! You’ve inspired me from when I first started watching you so congrats on the come up dude
I’ve seen many dishes with really small smelt cooked almost like fries. I catch these quite often when looking for live bait. I’ll have to try and cook them now. Great video. Keep’em coming. You da man!
I subscribed recently about 2 weeks ago, and watched most of your old videos, consider me as a loyal follower! Keep up the good work! Take it easy Taku!
Been binge watching your videos lately, awesome stuff. Couple requests. Catch/forage then cook at your home or restaurant. I think what makes you distinct is your cooking skills, would love to see that on full display where you're not limited by supplies. Also as others have suggested, take this international. People love outdoor, food, and travel videos. You got the first two covered, it would be amazing to see you cooking in Japan or some other place with good seafood and nature.
I think the fact that he is making the food outdoors with limited supplies is what makes the videos so good and special because he's still able to make amazing and delicious food even when he's outdoors.
I like the outdoor cooking too, that's why I watched these videos. I'm not asking to change the format, but what's wrong with doing a video of him cooking in a professional kitchen.
Smelt-ugh! I remember poor Mom cleaning huge piles of small black smelt on Friday night for our large extended family of 11. Your recipe looks much more delicious than floured & fried.
Please don't be a sell out with your sponsors and sell bad products just for the money I hate for a up and coming UA-camr to loses viewer do to bad products truly love your videos 💖
Very similar style to Malay cooking. We would add soya sauce and lime juice to the fried onions and chillies. But put it as a dipping sauce by the side. The fish can be sprinkled with curcumin powder and rubbed with salt before frying. Eat with hot steamed rice.
Hello . Understand that like most fishermen you may be a little reluctant to disclose your location, but it's so pretty out there I was just kinda wondering where your at. I'm here in Northern California along highway one between Petaluma and Fort Bragg. Reminds me a lot of that area. Another great vid, thank you. The ocean is absolutely full of those jacksmelt, and yet, they're scorned. I think that's crazy considering the hunger problem in our country . It just takes education and a little bit of love to teach another man to fish, so that he can feed himself and his family. Thanks.
You should definitely consider coming to Australia as one of your goals :) plenty of great fresh things to catch and cook here! Could even do a collab with Andy's Fishing !! keep up the good work mate favourite youtuber to date !
Wow Taku. You have come a long way from just a year ago. I love watching your videos. Your catch and cook food makes me want to jump thru the tv and eat with you. Keep up the great stuff.
Found you from my man fisherman's life video. I'm glad you're still making vids :) and yea, get that money homie! sponsor the shit out of the videos. It's worth it and i'll still watch

Much love from New Zealand...love your vids!! The fishing here is frikken awesome!!!!

Oh! Consider doing merch. We would totally buy them. :3
Where's your dream travel destination man? I'd love to see you in japan! TAKU TRAVELS THE WORLD!!! LET'S GO
Catch and cook around the world
New Zealand! I'll definitely be in Japan. I was born in Osaka. My dad lives in Kagoshima now.
Outdoor Chef Life! New Zealand?!? That would be amazing. I know 0 about New Zealand, so that would be crazy to see 👌 let's get TAKU TO NEW ZEALAND.
I have a cousin who married a Japanese girl and now lives in Yokohama! Japan is definitely on my bucket list
Outdoor Chef Life well if you end up in NZ, I’ll let you know where the decent fishing is!! 🤙🤙
Get them sponsors, have fun, and keep it up with the fun, honest, and easy going videos! You're inspiring to us landlocked rural peeps dude
The dark part is the belly fat. I scrape all that off as well. It tastes a bit bitter. And I agree with your assessment. Jacksmelt is definitely far from the best tasting fish, but is still pretty yummy when fresh and properly cooked
I can usually catch over a dozen per trip but only keep 4-6 which I bake for the cat and dog. I have eaten it myself a few times marinated in oil.
I agree. I deep fry it in salt, pepper, and flour batter. Not the best tasting fish but I would gladly eat it in a pinch.
Hell yeah you made it! Everything you described about what you wanted to do, you're doing now. Inspiring
Taku take your time on creating content. Your health and well being is more important. We don’t mind sponsored videos because you are awesome and are not a sell out.

I love your catch, cook and foraging videos. Just a reminder that jacksmelt is the only member of its genus, not a true smelt. Such a pretty fish.
I'm a fairly recent subscriber, but I've been watching your channel for the last year. I truly enjoy the content even though I live on the east coast. You and Fisherman's life are the two best west coast fishing channels I've seen.
As long as you're the one preparing it Master Chef Taku, we'll eat anything you make! Your knife skill is second to none!
Bro.
Theres some awesome old vets that fish out on the old pier in Hilo that catch and cook every day.
But on the real I would LOVE to see you in Japan! Like kicking it with the locals on the shore, making some dashi and rocking some fish cooking that we can never see in Cali.

An exotic travel destination catch and cook would be awesome
You're doing great Taku! My daughter and I always enjoy your videos! Thanks for always keeping it real! Also thanks for sharing your knowledge on foraging and cooking what you catch.
I love how you ask us questions as if we can respond in real time.. reminds me of Blue's clues.
*"Should I cook this up?"* **pause**
Cooking on the beach is the best place to enjoy your time...
Each filet off a jacksmelt makes a great fish finger! Love them breaded and fried.
I eat all part of the fish so regularly I never complain about flavor
You have the best catch and cook vids
👍 Shore lunches of fresh fish are the BEST reason to go fishing! 🎣😎
