James’ score for Peter Pan was the first film soundtrack I think I bought for myself, I was obsessed with that when it came out.
Loved everything about this episode, hearing these scores instantly conjures up images of a classic rom-com opening credits scene, the camera slow pans from the sky to the roof of a house or the front door as the music floats over the top of it. Scores like these ones always feel so comforting, even if the movie was a comedy rather than a romantic film, they always felt like a big warm hug.
Oof, this episode brought up some real 90’s kid feels 😆

Maaan, the score that put James Newton Howard on the map for ME was Signs. I've always adored that he was able to craft such a tense/anxious atmosphere while keeping every last aspect completely musical rather than other horror scores that put emphasis on jump scares and ambient noise. His sense of orchestration and voicing has and always will be top tier to me.

@@awintory Exactly! There are very few soundtracks that I actually own a physical copy of but that IS one of them. Good thing too, cause it's not available on Spotify for whatever unfortunate reason. Very nerve racking, but never compromising complete emotional sensitivity. A first class example of structure and spotting so impeccable that the music might as well be dissolved into the screenplay.

My favourite episode yet, thanks guys! Loved Troy's reaction to getting the score to Dave right.
As a child from the 80's this was very nostalgic for me and in such a serious world we live in atm its nice to bring some light and beauty back into it.
And Austin you really tickled me by sneaking in some Jerry Goldsmith 😂
Keep up the great work guys, much love 💕

    Spotify really scares me.
As a classical music lover, who loves liner notes, I was hesitant for the longest time to use Spotify.
But then I saw that I was beginning to run out of space for new CD's. Again...
And so I tried the subscription after realising that basically all major labels have their entire catalogue on there.
And suddenly I had my library filled with recordings I used to have on LP, ones that I always wanted to buy, but never got around to, and loads of new stuff I never heard before.
And I realised: Before this it was a matter of space and money. I simply couldn't afford to buy more than half a dozen CD's a month at full price.
Now it is a matter of time.
I'm as old as you, Austin, and my Spotify Library grows so fast, I will never be able to listen to all that stuff before I die of old age.
And you are not helping with this show! ;)
And on the topic of "Cutthroat Island": At that time it came out, none of us saw it, but our DM for our D&D game bought the Soundtrack and used it for out seafaring adventure part filled with seamonsters and undead pirates (long before POTC).
I loved the score, and I loved that it was a Debney work (who I remembered from Seaquest DSV). When I bought my first DVD Player, among the movies I bought first was: "Cutthroat Island".
    And it's not half bad.

I'm in the middle of scoring a short film, my first paid one actually (yay money) and its been probably the most challenging I've yet come across and I was starting to get a bit weighed down and honestly frustrated with it, but recently I've started binging your videos, behind the scenes on Pathless and your brilliant podcasts with legends like Bear McCreary and Marty O'Donnell and Gustavo Santaolalla (who's Last of Us and Ronroco albums taught me to play guitar) and you've helped remind me of the beauty and fun in making music, I honestly feel revitalised.
    Thank you, Austin :)
PS: after all that I really hope the soundtrack doesn't end up sucking haha

Okay wow I’m sorry I’m late to the party haha! But man James Newton Howard is such a great composer and I agree that he’s not that talked about. I became familiar with him through his Disney scores to Dinosaur, Atlantis and Treasure Planet. My absolute favorite score of his however was for Peter Jackson’s King Kong. When I saw it in theaters I immediately was blown away by the soundtrack. Oh man such a powerful and huge score very akin to Steiner but definitely no less Newton Howard’s style.

Seemingly off topic, but Bruce Broughton's score for "Harry and the Hendersons" and Lee Holdrige's score for "Splash" (a bit more on topic) always fills that 'lush orchestral comedy' space in my memory. Both from the 80s... yeah generally off topic. But hey! Music!

The 90s is a huge decade of inspiration for me, particularly those family and romantic comedy films. They’re a master class in lovely orchestral writing. I’m constantly using that inspiration but it feels like music that isn’t written much anymore, for films that wouldn’t be made that way anymore.
Im such a nerd for these types of scores I started buying up the CD’s whenever I found them. I actually own the CD to John Debneys score for “My Favourite Martian.” 1999. The deep cuts.
Totally agree that you’d think these scores are on the nose, but they’re so not.
Would be great to go down the rabbit hole of orchestral action scores from the 90s, too! Joel Mcneely’s work alone deserves so much convo. That man is a beast. From his action 90s work to his modern Disney work. Keeping it all alive!
    Great convo Austin!
Interesting little fact in Liar Liar, Debney and Newton Howard scored together. I think Newton Howard only wrote the theme. Debney did the rest!

      @awintory  3 роки тому +3

I stated that fact about LIAR LIAR explicitly in the show :) They didn't really work together per se; JNH just left early and Debney used his thematic ideas.
And yes 90s action could be a fun one. Kamen!

Great discussion! One of the last rom coms that I recall having a lush orchestral score was Hans Zimmer's work for The Holiday. It felt like the end of that era which had its peak in the 90s.
Side note- One of the things I appreciate about period films (particularly Victorian era) is the music. When you played Rachel Portman's piece, it reminded me of her work on Emma. It seems like lavish orchestration like that is still somewhat present in romantic period films, maybe because it fits the setting/production, and thus it doesn't come across as overly sentimental in that context?

THE HOLIDAY has some really nice stuff. Zimmer's best of all in this category, for me, is AS GOOD AS IT GETS. Much more like an intimate chamber score but goddamn is it wonderful. Among my favorite of his themes ever

Romantic comedies of the past twenty years with big orchestral scores could arguably include John Williams' _The Terminal_ , John Debney's _The Princess Diaries_ and his other collaborations with Garry Marshall as well as Hans Zimmer's work with Nancy Meyers. As for _Ghostbusters_ being Ivan Reitman's only good film? Come on! _Kindergarten Cop_ , _Stripes_ , _Meatballs_ , etc...

EDIT: I got this all wrong. Just rewatched Cutthroat Island and Davis kicks ass the whole way through, she isn't some damsel in distress --- I can't guess where I got that impression. Great movie, everybody should watch it!
I've seen Cutthroat Island, I think it had a very strong first half but in the end the guy had to end up the hero and Gena Davis, who kicked ass in the flick, had to end up the damsel in distress. Luckily, Renny Harlin made up for it in his very next film that also starred Davis, The Long Kiss Goodnight, a FABULOUS movie

There is a moment in The American President clip that really jumped out at me. Basically descending notes that repeat (FED C FED C maybe) faintly by on the strings. And that short little phrase is something to seems to turn up a lot in scores, and I feel it every time I hear it. It’s more understated here, perhaps, than other times I’ve heard it (like in the very last scene of Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story). But it’s always that same pattern with the 3rd and 4th notes held a bit, and it turns up in works by a lot of different composers it seems. Is there any reason for that beyond the beautiful simplicity of it? Or have I just gone mad?

Sooooooooo disappointed in myself that I didn't recognize Dave. Love that film. Seen it... A number of times.
Troy's right, Sigourney Weaver was *beautiful* in that movie.
I'm not sure you could make Dave, or The American President (or even The West Wing, frankly) nowadays. They're too nice. Too pure.
(Also, is Sirens really counted as a Romantic Comedy? I would've thought if you could classify it at all it'd be Romantic Drama... Eh, above my pay grade.)
    Great episode!

    • @awintory
      @awintory  3 роки тому +3

Troy is generally well-versed in recent scores and the whole idea is that there is a huge treasure trove of stuff he probably doesn't know about that my lifetime of nerdiness has exposed me to. So while yes, current scores are on the table, the odds of picking one he's already hip to is way higher.
