  • The next two episodes of 'The Scooby-Doo Show' take a literary bent as they both feature monsters from North American and British folklore.
    Okay, maybe it's not fair to classify Merlin as a "monster", unless you stop and think about what he did to poor Igraine in John Boorman's 'Excalibur' (1981).
    Nicole Williamson was great in that film, wasn't he?

    Other than the part of Ichabod never having kids in the original story, I actually think that the part of him having a teenage great-great grandchild in the 1970s checks out a lot more likely than you might think. Between the number of children who wouldn't make it to adulthood and the amount of times someone might end up widowed, and then remarried at a still relatively young age, some people continued to have kids later than life. For example, President Tyler was born in 1790, and he actually has 1 currently living grandson. Tyler's youngest child was born in 1860, when he was 70 years old 🤷‍♂️

      Lest we forget that the implications of Ichabod’s survival of Brom Bones’ ultimate prank could be a mystery in of itself; like he could be moving to a different country under a different name, and got married there, while his descendants moved back to America after he died; since the original story did allow the audience to draw to their own conclusions.

      Oh, I know plenty of people had children at advanced ages, but I was going for the "norm". While it is possible for someone to have kids in their 70s, we can't all be Al Pacino!

      @@JoeGoesOver As stated, it’s very likely Ichabod Crane would’ve survived Brom’s prank and immigrated to a different country under a new name; and given that his descendant doesn’t know what happened to him, we could chalk this up to Ichabod sharing a secret with his first born, so that no one else should know. Besides, even though the novella didn’t have Ichabod receive any children, this is because Irving wanted us to draw our own conclusion. But yeah, it’s very contradictory that they say Ichabod is someone’s GGG-Grandfather, when even she doesn’t know how he survived.

      There's also a possibility that Ichabod fled from the fake Horseman, AKA Bram Bones, had a wife and kids, moved back to Sleepy Hollow... and then encountered the REAL Headless Horseman.

    • @dafilmqueen556

      Makes sense. But if you want a more wild example, in the Bible, we have people like Abraham, who had his only son Issac when he and his wife were literally 99 years old. And according to the Bible, humans at the time could live up to at least 900 years old, with Noah dying somewhere in his 500s. So yeah, while it is rare for humans now to live that long, I could still see it plausibly happening, especially in a universe like Scooby Doo where immortality is a prominent part of the lore established in the episodes.

    For the headless horseman thing, mending media does point out Ichabod is never said to be killed, and he could’ve escaped to justify him having descendants and for them to be taking place at sleepy Hollow. They could’ve just moved back first technically at the time sleepy hollow didn’t actually exist. They actually changed the name after this episode, at least the next part of episodes are more unique to a lot of things are repeated mostly because I think the crew is trying to re-capture the magic of the first show say what you Will with a First Scrapy show at least most of the time, at least one part was original

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  8 місяців тому +3

      There's always a chance for ol' Ichabod to have escaped and returned to town, but going by what Beth says in the episode, he was never heard from again. And if he was, in fact, the famous Ichabod Crane from Irving's story, he was childless.
      If the episode was longer, they could have had the Horseman terrorizing Beth's family, which might not have been named "Crane", but given a different name like "Jones". There could have been an act two reveal that they were Ichabod's descendants after he left Sleepy Hollow and started a new life under an assumed name, only for the curse to find his family two hundred years later.

      @@JoeGoesOver I have mentioned before that the novella lets us draw our own conclusion on what happened to Ichabod, but how could Hanna-Barbera not take the time to give us that as a surprising plot twist to an already confusing decision?
      It would’ve been funny if a descendant of Abraham Van Brunt (AKA Brom Bones) was the cop who came to take the villain away, (and present to the woman appalled that her cousin would betray her), and that the costume made him think that it was a role reversal of the prank that Brom had done: "Brom never intended to kill Ichabod, but he definitely gave that goof the ultimate scary prank to ever happen that night. Brom used the Headless Horseman, who was a relative of the Van Brunt family, to much great effect that Ichabod would end up fleeing to Britain." It would be the girl’s mother, who decided to return home with her child, would bring up this legend, and would be the reason why she is a bit confused about Ichabod’s existence. Surely, Hanna-Barbera would’ve taken their time to resolve that plothole by introducing another descendant character. But like you said, Hanna-Barbera being the company that it is, doesn't think much of their own continuity.

    24:00 i've just gotta say there's another way Dum can be both brother and cousin if Scooby's family works like humans. I think the ballparked "Maximum" age of having a child you gave to be a bit young, given that the 10th US President, John Tyler (1790-1862) , has a living grandson, which is just INSANE to think about. John Tyler had his son Lyon (1853-1935) at 72, and Lyon had his son Harrison (b. 1928) at 75. Granted, none of this changes the analysis, it was just a piece of trivia I thought was somewhat relevant and interesting.

      41:19: Ignoring that Zarko is the only suspect to know the Dog talks, are you sure that Merlin doesn’t have the power to understand animals? Although Merlin was not given any animals, since Familiars were not a thing back in medieval times, T.H. White, the author of “The Sword in the Stone”, was responsible for Merlin owning an Owl. White was a schoolteacher, and treats his depiction of the Wizard as a self-insert; he included an Owl, because White had a collection of birds. Unlike Mindy Khaling self-inserting herself as Velma just to grab people’s attention with her cynicism, T.H. White self-inserting himself as Merlin did give the guidance needed for both Arthur and the reader, as the authoritarian feel of having a wiser person as your schoolteacher did help Merlin as a character.
      Long story short, it’s not a Disney original element, but Merlin talking to Animals definitely helped the villain stay in character.

    47:50 Okay, new watcher here, so I don't know if you've discussed it before, but there is a popular fan theory that Shaggy is actually a magic user, or at least has ties to the supernatural.
    One of the biggest things supporting it, being that his dog, Scooby, is supernatural in some canons of the series, another being that Shaggy (and by extension Scooby) is the member of the gang who most consistently encounters the supernatural, including the movie where Shaggy was chosen to become the next werewolf driver in a supernatural race.
    Since it really makes no sense for the bad guys to give one of their victims a sandwich or drink of water (unless it's poisoned), this could be cases of Shaggy manifesting his own magic by accident. I will at least promote the water being legit supernatural, as the first episode established that black magic is real, and that Shaggy is capable of using it

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  6 місяців тому +2

      I haven't (to the best of my recollection), but I could easily see how a theory like that would gain a following.

      Basing the originality of a villain on their single interpretation and the franchise as a whole is a question I've had pop up several times in the comments. This is one of those fourth-wall breaking moments from the standpoint that the ONLY way to judge how unique a costume or scheme is looking at the Scooby-Dooniverse in its entirety up to that point in the chronology. Otherwise, EVERY costume would be considered original because every villain and every series would technically be the first time the Gang ran across something like that. In many respects, the villain ranking is a combination of judging the motivations and actions of the fictional bad guy as well as the writers and producers who created them in the first place.

    The Headless Horseman is one of my all-time favorite monsters! As for this show, the episode I remember watching the most was "The No Faced Zombie Chase Case", as my friend owned a VHS with that episode on it and we watched it a lot. Man, just wait till we get to "To Switch a Witch". Seriously, I'm surprised Arlene's reaction to having a long-lost sister was so restrained. It's almost like she didn't care. Seriously, how would you feel if you had a long-lost brother or sister and they were a criminal? Wouldn't you at least try to bond with them, even if they go to jail? Sorry, just trying to help give you material. LOL

      It wouldn't surprise me in the least if that was the case, but knowing Hanna-Barbera, they'd do whatever was cheaper. I don't think it's likely they'd change the animation to reflect a voiceover mistake, because that'd require using a photocopier for a dozen cels.

    9:30 If you're clever, it's not as limiting as it seems. One solution would be to hide it in plain sight. Using your Mona Lisa example, before you acquire the portrait, you have an exact duplicate hung in your house made by a talented artist. You explain that since you can never own the original, a near perfect duplicate will have to do. Then, when you have the original, you swap it for the fake, and people would never know.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  6 місяців тому +1

      The danger, though, would be if authorities investigating very realistic fakes learned about another realistic "fake" hanging in the home of a private collector. They might show up asking questions as to where that collector obtained the artwork.
      While this may not immediately point to anyone's guilt, it's never a good idea for a criminal to be on police radar.

    How high is the counter of the Scooby-gang having wealthy or rich relatives anyways? With there being so much money floating around in those families, I guess that explains how they finance their mystery solving exploits, beyond doing a few jobs here and there. Incidentally, this also makes any kidnapping plot of any villain even more foolish, because those families and wealthy relatives would probably be a great incentive for any law enforcement to care, making em get right on that case. Heck, I'm surprised none of the villains schemes have revolved around kidnapping one or more of the meddling kids after luring them in with seeming supernatural shenanigans and then demanding a ransom for their safe return from their extreme entourage of rich relatives.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  8 місяців тому +1

      That would make a very good premise for an episode or a DTV release!
      Granted, 'Frankencreepy' had elements of that, but not for potential ransom demands.
      I think Velma may be the only one in the Gang who didn't seem to come from wealth, but that may be because I'm forgetting a potential rich relative.

    • @videocrowsnest5251
      @videocrowsnest5251 8 місяців тому +2

      @@JoeGoesOver I could already see how any villains who did their research would then exclude Velma from their plot, only to end up royally shooting themselves in the foot with leaving her to roam about because out of the whole bunch she is probably the most dangerous to any villains schemes.
      Incidentally, I would also really like seeing an episode/DTV where Velma needs to save the day all on her own after this sort of scheme unfolds. If done right, it would be both thrilling and entertaining, plus allow for some examination of the group dynamics of the gang. IE - Why Velma doesn't just solo everything, and the other members do contribute in their own ways. Plus, shine a light on the whole "most of them come from big money families" angle.

    I will say that I disagree a bit on the Outfit score. Now calling the disguise the "Ghost of Merlin" is a bit weird since it's not much of a ghost, but it is actually somewhat unique because even though magic-using monsters have been used, this is the first time an archetypal wizard has been used. I also think that the menacing voice and stare of Merlin makes him quite intimidating. The Black Knight is definitely unoriginal, but reasonably scary on a Scooby-Doo level in my opinion.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  6 місяців тому +1

    1:53 Interestingly Irving's story was partly inspired by real events. When a headless Hessian body was found after the Battle of White Plains, the Van Tassel family insisted on giving him a proper burial in the local cemetery, in case it was the same soldier who had sheltered their child during a raid and subsequent burning of the family's farm. As you pointed out later the burning of the body definitely comes off as a type-o in the script.
    13:09 The animator at least tried to account for how this trick was done. We see here the Horseman is much taller than Shaggy whereas later 13:49 we see Elwood is shorter than him. Or it's just a coincidental mistake. Always hard to tell with Hannah-Barbera.

    24:46 I mean, if we run with the assumption that both Scooby Doo and Dum are purebred great danes, then yeah, them being both cousins and brothers is incredibly likely; purebred dogs are notoriously inbred, making them suffer from plenty of debilitating conditions. And let's not forget that we're introduced to a female cousin, Scooby Dee, in a future episode, that both Doo and Dum have the hots for. I'm just saying, be whether you're looking for an in-universe reason or following real-world logic, Scooby's family probably have their roots in Alabama

    I remember liking the headless horseman episode but I was never able to take Merlin seriously as a kid because I always thought his stupid hat lookes more like a birthday party hat than a wizard's hat.
    It's going to take a while to get to him but my favorite monster from this series was always the Rambling Ghost. I don't think he'll get a good score though. I don't know why exactly but something about him screamed "low-scoring villain" to me when I was rewatching that episode recently.

    11:02: my guess as to why most versions since the Disney version went for the “Jack-0-Lantern” design choice could be because of two things. Internally, the Headless Horseman wanted to have a new head, and the Pumpkin is a temporary replacement, but getting a head also means he needed a face. Externally, a face is needed to help people be familiar with a particular character, even if the Headless Horseman technically doesn’t have a face. People might confuse the Headless Horseman with the Headless Spector, had the Headless Horseman not have a Pumpkin for a head.
    36:36: so this design is where Monsters Unleashed got their Black Knight; we even found out later on at 52:46 that this Black Knight can talk, unlike the OG.
    37:56: What you said about “complaining about fictional characters”, while talking about Scooby characters in a “renaissance fair”, reminds me of a BCSD episode about a renaissance fair.
    43:02: try telling that to Yzma: ua-cam.com/video/_mi_7aGv-p4/v-deo.html
    43:45: when talking about this, you would’ve used Disney’s Robin Hood to show Sir Hiss’ hypnotism to sooth Prince John’s insecurity (representing hypnotism used for mental treatment), and Disney’s Aladdin to show the Sultan denying Jafar’s forcefulness in having Jasmine being engaged to the Royal Vizier by responding “but you’re so old” (representing how hypnotism can’t force people to be against their own free will).
    46:58: Pictured here: NOT Howard Hughes.
    49:36: Ah yes, another ridiculous Scooby-Doo staple: the Bait-and-Switch Double Mask!
    54:34: Gotta give SDS Velma some credit, at least she didn’t diss the fans over pre-established canon.

      I think you're giving Hanna-Barbera too much credit. My guess is they used a Jack-o-Lantern because that's what everyone else was doing. Frankly, there's a lot to be said about the terror inspired by a faceless monster (see my upcoming video for that).
      This version does look more like the one that appeared in the live action film.
      That was one of many, many terrific episodes in 'Be Cool, Scooby-Doo'.
      To be fair, eventually Jafar's hypnotism against the Sultan looked like it was going to eventually work on him.

    In defense of the merlin Costume not being scary You could Technically argue this is one of the few times the costume doesn't need to be scary in the scooby-doo Franchise. The thing that makes Him Scary is his magic. Now of course they could have made him look more scary. But If we look At the in universe villain. I can understand why he feel that wouldn't be necessary. Since he was able to Disappear And reappeal And summon ghosts. I'm not saying i don't agree with your ranking Because I do agree with it. I'm just saying it makes sense that he doesn't necessarily need to make his costumes scary For him to be able to scar people. Unlike most other villains in the series Just like the ghost from scooby-doo where are you form ep2. The costume wasn't scary but the fact that he could Go through walls And a bunch of other shit is what made him scary. Both of these villains felt like they didn't need to have a scary costume because the effects they had were enough. Once again not disagreeing with you It's just something that does make sense to me on why the villains didn't feel like making the costumes scary.

      You're not wrong that the costume didn't need to be scary for this particular villain, but I'm trying to remain consistent with my ranking, and one of the elements of what makes a good Scooby bad guy is the scariness of the costume.
      Granted, that won't always apply every single time because there are a few variations of the theme, but remaining consistent is my way of trying to avoid as much bias as possible.

    yea they didn't burn bodies back in colonial time and last time I checked the head horseman haunts because he is looking for his head or vengeance not because his body was burned, the Mona Lisa thing the only way I can see it being stolen now a days is if a huge organization somehow stole it and replaced it with a really really good counterfeit. Making Merlin a monster is such a weird choice cause he's a good guy it would make more sense to have Mordred or Morgan Le Fey be the monster.

    Sad that my statement about no villain getting under 3/5 was immediatly contraddicted, but I predicted it. I am now accostumed enough woth your scale to recognize almost always when a villain is subpar by your criteria, even if I may some details wrong, altough I tought Merlin would have been worst then the headless horseman but that kight just be me lickling him less. The epsiodes where still enjoyable tough as you said, i liked the first one for the mystery aspect, even if it's very easy to guess it's Elwood even if you don’t pick up the clues, and for the second one... is not ny favourite onestly,but it had fun moments like the hypnotism angle. In general the scooby doo show seems more mystery oriented then the previous two series to me, and I really like that, I am a big mystery fan and that's what got me into Scooby Doo in the first place.
    Onestly I don't think it's bad that the headless horseman was re used from the Don Knott episode because he is such a famous monster that he deserve to have his own episode instead of just a short campo in an epsiode that it had nothing to do with it. Altough I think he could have been handle a little bit better, like having light or even fire coming out on the pumpkin head, yes that would have made him even closer to the disney interpretation but it would also made him more scary and memorable.At least we can give credit to Elwood for not going the lazy route of just using the pumking as mask and actually showing himself headless, for how unrealistic that might be. The head stealing part was clever and scary on one hand, but on the other if it's not your first scooby dok episode it would basically give away what's going on. And yes I also tought that the guests where a little to easly scared, immagine if it was just a guest that decided to show off his costume in an over the top way.
    Fun fact, while I never read the novel, for what I heard it seems that there is an implication that the horseman might not have been real, but rather just Brom Bones, Ichabond's romatic rival, that disguised himself as the horseman to scare him off the town and marry the girl they where competing for. So... Basically he was a Scooby Doo villain, wich makes even more appropriate for that monster to be included here and for those event to have actually happened in the Scooby Doo universe.
    Merlin was a bit of a weird choice for a villain. Had he ever been depicted as an antagonist? The episode doesn't ever even address the fact he should be an heroic figure. He even call himself evil has one point.
    Is he really considered that iconic? I never saw people talk about him, i personally find him rather plain, bur then again I can't get what people find in Miner 49 and he is definitly iconic, despite being litteraly just an old man. The tricks where cool tough. Hypnotism has been depiced in many media as overriding the victim's will, at least if they don't have strong willpower, and Shaggy and Scooby doesn't seem to have much of that. Immagine if they succeded in killing the gang and then they woke up and find out about it. They would have been scarred forever, that's probably one of the most evil things a villain has tried to do that far, Zarko may not be smart but sure is ruthless.
    I think in the Scoobyverse dogs that talks are just a thing that exist and most people are aware of that. Nobody was ever surprised about Scooby Doo and in a later episode we see a cousing of Scooby being an actress so she has to be famous, and when the villain replace her with a new dog she also talks despite no indication of being related to Scooby. And that's without bringing in Mystery Inc's explaination since that's a different continuity. Regardless tought, the clue against Zarko can still hold up since he was sure Scooby Doo could talk even if not all dogs xan even in that universe.
    Yes their capture was incredibly umiliating, and I would had that is embarasing for them to almost fall for their own tricks. But the gang is no better: when Daphne got her finger stuck, couldn't they have helped her instead of mocking her? That's one of their qorst moments onestly
    I think the clue about the hour makes some sense: Zarko cpuld be the only magician that has his show at that hour and distance and they already had narrowed it down to a magician. Off course it doesn't really matter if they had got it right or no, because at the end they would have find out anyway while unmasking him like most times (they could have not find out Clarence was a mask admitedly, but they would have still sent him to the police and then they would have figured it out. Let's face it, most of the time solving the mystery is completly usless, you just need to catch and unmask the monster, unless he had a non masked accomplice like the 1000 volts ghost). You are right with the scarf clue tough, it could have worked if they asked about it to Shagworty (side note, is weird that he has shag in the name since that's supposed to be a nickname, altough I guess that wasn't established yet. Even weirder is Dum sharing the first name with Scooby instead of the last one, something they would fix with you know who)
    The castle brought stone by stone seems a way to make and englabd or scotland themed episode without having them actually leave the country/continent (not counting when thet did it by magic) wich seems to be something they wheren't confident with doing untill thw third season where they start roaming the world half of the episodes. Setting the episode in englad would have spared us a lot of headaches about the castle.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  8 місяців тому

      You make a good point about Ichabod's rival, Brom. Dressing up as a supernatural villain to carry out his nefarious scheme does make him a bit of a proto-Scooby villain! Well, I say "nefarious", but I guess all's fair in love and war, and it's not like Ichabod was a saint, either.
      While seldom treated as an antagonist, Merlin has appeared as less of a hero in adaptations over the years. His character in 'Excalibur' (1981), while not a villain, definitely did some less-than-heroic acts like helping Arthur's father technically r*** his mother; likewise, the Merlin featured in the Mark Twain story was depicted as a charlatan through most of the work.
      In many series, Velma and Fred can never resist giving Daphne grief when she screws up. To be fair, my best friend and I are constantly insulting each other, and the Japanese seem to have a concept of "being friendly enough with someone to fight them".
      You make a good point that by keeping the Gang in the United States but still manage to visit a "European castle", it keeps them grounded. The thing is, it's a CARTOON. There should have been no reason to limit the locations the way they did. It's not like it cost Hanna-Barbera any extra money to make new foreign characters, or the voice artists charged more for doing an accent. They barely got paid as it was!

      As it was also mentioned in the Novella. Either Ichabod Crane survived Brom Bones' Ultimate Prank and managed to find himself a family to raise (which would give some plausibility for Hanna-Barbera to exacerbate the possibility of Beth Crane's existence), or he actually was killed by the Headless Horseman, and was spirited away (which would mean Beth Crane's existence is a paradox). Since Beth Crane is said to be Ichabod's birth descendant, I'm leaning more towards the former on this one.
