@@JoeGoesOver, that or the universe of Scooby Doo is one where humans are stronger than humans in our universe. Fits with the cartoon logic in this universe, plus we’ve seen supernatural beings in this franchise before. Our beloved scaredy boy and dog certainly know a few of those themselves (the girls from Ghoul School and the Goblin King)..😊

Ebenezer Crabbe is definitely one of the better villains in the Scooby-Dooniverse, but I'm curious if he scares so many because he looks sinister, or because he's an old man and thus a reminder how age comes to us all, even as we desperately try clinging to youth as it slips through our fingers like water from a rusty faucet?
      And now I'm sad.

I'm surprising myself at the pace I'm maintaining, but I'm worried about burn-out as well. Despite editing being a massive pain in parts and the limits of my studio location causing audio issues, the biggest obstacle will always be the script stage. As long as the thoughts flow, I can keep up with the filming and editing.
But without anything to say, there will not be anything to film.

To be fair, Scooby has shown bravery in the face of at least 3 monsters: The Apeman (aka Carl the Stuntman), The Puppet Master, and the duo of Joker and Penguin dressing up as skeletons. Granted, Carl the Stuntman is so pathetic that Scooby Doo showing any bravery against him would be expected, especially since he can’t even fight him off; and the skeleton costumes that both Joker and Penguin wore to scare the gang was their ultimate downfall that time because apparently Scooby thought they were quote “delicious looking bones”. However, the Puppet Master was the most formidable. The reason the dude got caught in the first place was because Scooby actually chose to go after him. Think about it: there was no prompting for Scooby to go get the PM. No bribes, no monsters chasing after him, no fear, no doubt. Scooby saw a masked criminal running away from them, a masked criminal who terrorized the gang by the way, and actively chose to go after him to stop him. Scooby and Shaggy may be cowards, but let’s face it, if Ultra Instinct Shaggy is anything to go by, if Scooby and Shaggy were even half as brave as we know they can be, most of the monsters would’ve been defeated long before they even had a chance to continue their operations. They just happen to be held back by fear so much that we forget they can be brave too..

I hope you would eventually do all the series or at leasts the ones that actually works in this format (the ones with just Scooby Shaggy and Scrappy, Get a Clue, Velma (unless you do a single episode treating it like an extended movie) and to a less extent 13 Ghosts does not imo, even putting aside the quality) but I recognize is an huge amout of work so I am not putting any pressure on you i just hope my two favourites (WN and MI) are covered.

I once did math on the characters' age with an old roommate when riffing on an episode. We thought the kids were 18 in 1969. Old enough to go everywhere without adult supervision but still "kids" to someone older. If 18 in 1969, the gang was 25 in 1976. In 1979, they were 28. When Scooby and Shaggy started hanging exclusively with Scrappy (while Fred, Daphne, and Velma were absent) they were 29. By 1985, during 13 Ghosts, Shaggy and Daphne were 34. They would have been born in 1951 (same as my father). In 2024, the gang would turn 73 years old.

Most sources place OG Velma at 15, Daphne at 16 and Fred and Shaggy at 17. That supposedly attributed to the original series creators.
In the late-1960s, it wasn't unheard of for minors to travel unaccompanied by any parents or guardians.

In my opinion, the Scooby doo show comes the closest to matching the feeling of the original 2 seasons of where are you. It’s not perfect, but I can see how some of the episodes were confused for a season 3. Honestly TSDS isn’t that bad, and is easily an improvement over the new Scooby doo movies.

    • @JoeGoesOver
      @JoeGoesOver  9 місяців тому +2

Just like how 'What's New, Scooby-Doo!' was an obvious return to the franchise's roots, 'The Scooby-Doo Show' did the same thing, albeit with only a single tangent series separating it from 'Where Are You?'.
Let's just say I don't dread beginning a new episode of this series as I did with 'The New Scooby-Doo Movies'. To be fair, 'Movies' wasn't nearly as bad as I expected before my re-watch, but they certainly weren't as enjoyable as 'Where Are You?'.

Great ranking as always. I've only seen the first episode so I'm biased in this ranking but my ranking goes
    1) Spectre of Ebenezer Crabbe and Ghost of Netty Crabbe
    2) Ghost of King Katazuma and Aztec Statue Monster

  • @beatlesfansam
    @beatlesfansam 9 місяців тому +4

Great video, Joe! I love this series, and "High Rise Hair Raiser" is one of my favorite episodes. The Specter of Ebenezer Crabbe is one of the creepier villains, and I believe he was voiced by the same actor (John Stephenson) who voiced another of my favorite villains from the series (Gramps the Vamp from "Vampire Bats and Scaredy Cats").
I didn't like "The Fiesta Host Is an Aztec Ghost" as much as "High Rise Hair Raiser", though I agree with your rationale for giving the villains in that episode a higher score.

Thank you for your kind words!
I believe I've said it before, but there are times when even I'm surprised at how a villain scores by the end. I'll go in expecting one thing based solely on my first impression (or childhood memories), but the longer I consider the plan, or an aspect of the disguise or something they did during the Gang's investigation, my opinion will change, and often by a significant margin.
I honestly started out with the whole "D.O.O. Score" as a gimmick (and pun), but have come to realize this was likely the best way to rank these guys as objectively as I can.

My plan so far is to complete 'The Scooby-Doo Show' while mixing in the occasional Scooby Renaissance film villain discussion.
Once this series is complete, I'm unsure where to go next.
On one hand, chronologically it should be 'Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo', but setting aside how much I want to avoid He Who Shall Not Be Named, much of that series does not follow the traditional Scooby formula and just consists of Shaggy, Scooby and Him getting involved with miscellaneous comedy situations.
It's likely I'll skip ahead to 'What's New, Scooby-Doo?' as that seems to have a more established rapport with the fandom, let alone myself.
I'm not ruling out '13 Ghosts' or 'A Pup Named', but they're probably far, far in the future.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

    • @matteopugliese4658
      @matteopugliese4658 9 місяців тому +1

Actually there are several series with Scrappy and the first one, as well as a few others, do follow the standard formula for most of their episodes. I am not at all against you skipping to What's New since that's my second favourite series, and just after that one there is my favourite series, Mystery Inc
(Ok, technically there is get a clue in between but it does not follow the formula either so that's an easy skip)

Good point and I forgot to include that in my script!
I've noticed that in my comments, lately. Getting reminded how I forgot to mention something that I had originally intended to bring up.
Even when I'm not in front of my keyboard, my brain will often gravitate toward what to include in a script, like when I'm in the shower or driving, and often an important point will occur to me. Sadly, there are times I don't make it to my computer or smartphone in time before the thought is lost in the ether.
It's even more aggravating to have forgotten this considering the building next to where I work recently lost a lawsuit by the local historical society for not having installed approved windows when doing a massive refurbishing. They had spent tens of thousands on just the windows despite being warned that city code required approval from the Society. It took a massive DAILY fine ordered by the judge for the developer to rectify their mistake.

This though, in my opinion, peak Scooby Doo. I can't wait for you to get to episodes like Gator Ghoul and Tar Monster. All of the greats from Cyber Chase were from WAY and SDS.

This show is a vast improvement over the Scooby Doo Movies, including it's villains. I am currently at season 3 and i am enjoying it very much. The writing it's also much better, altought with the usual naivity tipical of a kids cartoon, especially with what happens at the construction site . As such i do not have many issues, but i still have a few questions: in the map of the building on the newspaper i am not entirely sure where the villain's penthouse is supposed to be but anyways we see that the robbed houses are all arpund the building, so even if it's constructed, wouldn't obstruct the view only to one sode, still leaving other building on the same side of the penthouse that could be seen? Another question is, in the fake story (if it is fake... the precence of a real spell book raises the possibility that there could be some truth in it) is Ebenezer supposed to be death or not? They say that he achived immortality and comes back to exend his life, but also that he is a spectre, who wouldn't need to exetend his life bing immortal by default.
For the second episode my question is: how they made the giant footprint that appears when Katazuma supposedly kidnapps the professor? Was it already there and the gang didn't noticed it due to the dark and fog? I assume that's also how the professor was able to disappear in front of their eyes. Speaking of wich i think the professor staged his kindapping because he didn't tough anyone would be altruistic enough to risk their life to save a random stranger so it could be the classic mistake of villain not understanding that people could be better then them.
I was expecting Ebenezer to get more then aztec monsters since i liked him more but i guess that's the interesting part of this rankings, the result could be different from what your gut feeling would be. What's sure is thst Ebenezer is one of the more determined and no-nonsense villains, from constantly following the gang, to geting on their cars, to not failing for their tricks and immediatly going after his goal to chasing them in life treathing situations. On thing i noticed that in the first videos you used to dewlve more on the villain physical appearence, while now you focus more on "objective" facts like the special effects or how scary it is in universe. I understand the reason but i also liked how it was before, i liked when you analized the design choises of the monsters (altough i also like the major focus on special effects because a few first villains like the miner 49 and redbear got hight scores despite litteraly looking just like men wich was something i never agreed with)
I was expecting the videos to get shorter or include more villains since the episodes are half the lenght but i guess you still found a lot to talk (like me while writing this comment lol). I tought we where gonna get either more villains at once or shorter but more frequent videos, but i guess the schedule would probably remain the same. I am still waiting for the next two, they are both villains i really like so i hope they get hight score expecially the 10000 volts ghos, unfortunately the plan is pretty unoriginal but i think the costume would get hight scores and maybe the operation too who knows

You make a fair point that as these videos progress, my ability to grade them may be evolving as well. Unfortunately, as everything is subjective, it's difficult to nail a particular standard for a critical review as some things are beyond what the audience can control when thinking about what they're seeing. Even the time of day you watch something or when your last/next meal was/is can influence one's attitude.
I do have a "cheat sheet" to remind me what I'm looking for when discussing the various aspects of the scoring, but admittedly I don't always follow it as faithfully as others might. At times, I balance maintaining the letter of my scale to the spirit in which it was created, often being more concerned with what is more entertaining for those watching my video while at the same time trying to remain objective.
I think it's better served to discuss the mechanics, reasoning and effectiveness of a particular outfit rather than focusing on how "cool" it is, though if I see one that impresses me enough, that will definitely be taken into consideration when coming up with a rating.
You're not wrong about the building only potentially blocking a limited view from the penthouse hideout, but if they're greedy enough (and they WERE greedy), even losing out on that many potential victims was a no-go for Sparks and Rivets.
Fictional villains have always flipflopped between not understanding human kindness with depending on human kindness to exact their schemes. Some even monologue about how easy it is to get away with their crimes because they know too many people are kind and decent and can be taken advantage of.
I mentioned in another comment that while I expected to be able to fit more than two episode discussions in one video, I don't know until sitting down to write how much material I will have. For example, this time I spoke a lot more about the Crabbe scheme than the Katazuma one. Fortunately, I'm under no contractual obligations to deliver a set number of minutes to a network, so my videos can be anywhere from 10 minutes to upwards of an hour.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

It's amazing how far we've come in just the last few decades.
We went from being at the whim of the television network or local stations airing syndicated episodes in whatever order and whatever day of the week or time of the day they felt was best, to streaming services that are at our beck and call.
Even when it comes to home media, we've gone from the inefficient and expensive to produce VHS tape that would barely hold four episodes, so they had to be curated to include fan favorites, to DVD and Blu-ray sets that contain every episode of a series.
I still remember my Columbia House subscription 'Star Trek: TOS' and 'Star Trek: TNG' that delivered one or two VHS tapes per month with just two episodes per cassette, and just one season of each taking up an entire bookshelf.

I don’t know, your math about the age of Netty Crabbe, while worthwhile, relies on the supposition that Netty is a ghost who looks like she did when she died, like Mr. Doherty seems to imply to the gang. When Rivets and Sparks constructed the Ebenezer Crabbe disguise around the legend that Ebenezer was some sort of immortal warlock who faked his death to disguise his eternal life. I’d always assumed that Netty was meant to be a similar type of thing, a supernaturally old crone who had “faked her death” like her ancestor. And that Mr. Doherty’s comment was meant to insinuate that she was following in Ebenezer’s footsteps

It's not completely relevant, but I got special keys for my room. My door key has little gems on it so I can tell it apart, even if i'm unlocking the door in the dark. So maybe the people have the dial memorized and so choose to open it in the dark, just in case someone is spying on them.

As some who grew up in a Spanish speaking bilingual household, I can confirm that while porta means door, it would actually be spelled as puerta instead. Plus, El Porta? It should actually say La Puerta, not using El cause that just doesn’t work in Spanish.

The problem with dealing with older Scooby episodes is there is very little "official" documentation available like subtitles or the rest, and the subtitles we do get aren't always accurate.
Hell, the official sources can't even keep the episode airdates consistent!
I went with what was available to me when it comes to what the characters on screen were actually saying.
Also, kudos for speaking two languages! I admire the hell out of people who can do that!

That is a disturbing (and sadly spot-on) observation to introduce into a discussion on Scooby-Doo, and one that didn't occur to me at the time.
This is my second brush with something similar within the past week or two. At one of my side-gigs working for a social media firm, I had answered an off-kilter comment made by a rando. A day or two later, my employer brought it to my attention and pointed out how creepy it actually was and how I should have answered differently. From a guy's perspective, the comment had been weird, but from a girl's perspective, it was closer to disturbing. Just a subtlety of language and background can make all the difference in the world on the interpretation.
