  • Replacing a Ford van belt, idler pulley and tensioner on a 2011 Ford E350 van. This Ford van had a bad noise coming from the engine. There was an abnormal noise coming from the front of the engine and the owner was concerned it could be a cam phaser or timing chain issue. Usually if that is the case a 'rattle' will be heard especially on cold start up. In this case the abnormal noise was constant and mostly heard during idle. In the video we show the steps used to diagnose the issue and what needs to be replaced/repaired. The tools for this job are minimal and not to difficult. Like, comment and subscribe down below. Nice easy fix there - good deal. I can't imagine doing any major engine work the way they stuff those van engines way back in there. Nice work, daahctah (Dr.) Glen! 😎🍻

Thanks for this tutorial!! Just got done changing idler pulley and belt tensioner on my '08 Ford E-250 w/ close to 200,000 miles. I don't think the tensioner pulley would have lasted another 50 miles !! Job went smooth especially the tip on where to start the belt!! Just wish my arms were a little longer. Also bought the tensioner tool. It really made the job easier.

Glad to see that you didn’t have any phaser issues. I’m sure you didn’t want to tear into that engine. Have a good weekend Glen! 😀

Yes much smoother. I was surprised to see they still make them style of vans still just in a cutaway version. Cheers

My ‘07 , E150 , 5.4 with 150k was doing that last month. Not nearly as bad, just an annoying squeal like a wet belt. Anyways I paid the mechanic around $150 to fix those three items because I just don’t have the patience to work in that confined space. Next spring he can fix my A/C.

I put a stethoscope in my cart. I changed the belt on my truck a few years ago (routine maintenance) and everything seemed fine. I was under the hood a few days later and my new belt was being eaten by a locked up idler pulley. This tool would have identified the problem in advance and it’s too cheap not to own one.

Well I’m back sooner than I would have liked lmao. Got the shock job done as well as brakes / oil change / air filter and fresh coat of paint in the wheels. I left my sisters in Denver colorado to head into the mountains yesterday and ended up getting towed back. My ac compressor completely ate itself and it go so hot it snapped my acc drive belt like a knife through hot butter. The bearing in the ac clutch definitely makes a little noise but it runs and doesn’t produce any heat with the new belt on.
I was thrilled to see you had a video on this as your videos have helped me out tremendously and you seem to have some experience working on these old rust buckets. So my question for you is have you worked on any of the 5.4l engines that don’t have ac? I’ve been researching just bypassing the ac compressor but the only solution I have found still requires removal of the bad compressor which is what im trying to avoid until winter is over (not sure if you’ve seen how those things come out on the 5.4 but it’s a real pain in the ass) any thoughts on getting a shorter belt to bypass?
    Thanks I’m advance 👍🏼👍🏼

I have thirty plus years working on vehicles and have seen more than a few air conditioning compressors that lock up and throw the belt or just seize and prevent the engine from starting. When an a/c compressor is removed an idler pulley and bracket must be installed in it's place. I don't know your specific vehicle type but you will need to look it up. Now that you have some direction it should look similar to the idler pulley in the link, check fitment! amzn.to/3VE6aHk

@ozzstars_cars Thanks man your replied means a lot, and I also saw that you didn't take off the tension first apply the pulley, and then screw the tension back. Which I did, so I got to back and restart. Thanks again, and enjoy the day wherever you're located.

Yes but A/C is right up there. PB Blaster got it limbered up enough to drive into winter storage. Also very odd is the radio has no sound for like 5-7 minutes after start up. Then it’s perfect, there is always power to the unit and adjust the station etc, almost like a time delay, very odd 👽 but it is a Ford ....
