Hey, mate, what was the line rating for the big reds fishing, a few months ago, i hooked a big red or a jew on one early summer morning, i was using 1-3 kilo rod and 1000 reel, no chance at all to land the fish, so i was thinking upgrade for the big ones instead of bream fishing which i normally enjoyed, can you give me some advice about 8 Lb braid or 10 Lb for snapper fishing, for leader, i us 10 Lb flurocarben, size of reel 2500 shimano nacis
Hey mate, I tend to fish a little heavier than that for big reds land based. I typically use a 3-6kg rod, 3000 size reel and 8 ply PE1.0 braid which works out to be around 16-20lb depending on the brand. 16-20lb fluorocarbon leader.
Amazing fight and amazing catch. Good to see that size around our area getting caught from land. Too bad we cant utilize the entire wall anymore. Keep up the good content mate.
There are some areas that you can fish from, but the area in the video was fenced off not long after this video. You can hear the constru workers in the background at one point as they were building the formwork for the concrete bases
G'day Steve, this was at Wyndham Harbour mate. It was just before the fences went up, you can hear the tradesmen hammering in the concrete form work for the fences just as I hooked the 2nd fish LOL
Keep trying mate! Instead of a big day session, I go for a 2 hour session around the tide change a few times a week in season when I can. All these hits were in less than a 2 hour window!
Hey mate, yeah located in the western suburbs of Melbourne metro area. I'm originally a Sydney boy though, used to chase Marlin and Tuna up there when I was younger! Where does this look like to you? I know most of the areas around metro Sydney so might know where you were thinking.
@@joshzfishing Ahh yeah it does kinda look like it! My dad used to have a 34 foot Riviera at the St George motorboat club and we would often fish around there and caught some kingies and Snapper, but back then it was a very dead fishery. Commercial licences had just been bought out but the bay hadn't recovered yet.
im going to wyndham harbour in the summer and im gonna bring my infeet and exist. My infeet is 7'8 and my exist is 16lb. what lb leader would be suitable for the harbour? Great fish and vid
Thanks David! 16lb fluorocarbon leader is what I usually use around the harbour, I'm not chasing too many bream so prefer to fish a bit heavier around there in case of a big red or Mulloway. Good luck!
@@davidha5344 You'll find a lot of flathead around there but usually of a fairly decent size. Always the chance of a Mulloway and nice Snapper as well around the tide changes. 3 inch slim swimz is one of my favourite lures for down there.
@@davidha5344 don't forget to check out the river up in Werribee and other places like the Warmies as well! Plenty of good spots around metro Melbourne to try :)
Great vid - lovin the action I remember someone recommending stiffer rods and drag settings to get better hook sets with snapper style jigheads, to stop dropping fish - it was great advice
Thanks mate 🙂 yeah I had that issue early in this session, I had dropped another fish before I had turned the GoPro on so I had the drag cranked down really hard after I caught that first smaller fish since I'd dropped three fish in total and only caught one. If you look at the strike and run on the big fish, you'll see my hand was shaking as the fish took line as I had some serious drag on it to ensure that hook went in.
@@jordythebassist yeah - I went through a phase of dropping a few too many Jewies and a bloke asked how heavy my drag was set - I tested it with scales and it was under a kilo - as soon as I pumped it up to 2.5 kg - suddenly the jigheads started penetrating a whole lot better
@@ldagain That would definitely make a huge difference! It's easy to back off the drag a bit during the fight as well to give that extra bit of cushion once the hook is set. We fish up to 12kg strike drag on our big Bluewater rods and then go up to 20kg during the fight to really put the brakes on, I've seen some hooks get driven bloody deep into some billfish before 😅
@@jordythebassist Jesus - I can only imagine what 12kg of pressure feels like let alone fighting a fish with 20kg. Sounds like you probably have a better idea on how to sink hooks than me ;) After receiving my drag stiffening advice, I started testing all my terminal tackle, lines and knots to see what they could handle. Alot of my jigheads couldnt comfortably handle that amount of pressure, so I had to cull a few from the tackle bag What Jigheads were you using for those snapper?
@@ldagain if the hook is what's failing then your rig is very solid mate! The knots should be the weak points so if the hook is straightening then your knots are superb 👌 I recommend the TT lures headlockz jig heads as the best all rounder but always with the heavy duty hook, it's marked with an H next to the hook size on the pack. I've got another video where I go over the gear I typically use to catch these big Snapper land based. I'd recommend the same gear for Mulloway
Sorry for coming in to ur vid one year late mate ahaaa, thanks for the vid, tackle info and location sharing you're a real unselfish fishing legend mate, cheers.
Hey Zane, I don't have a preferred tide as I have caught equal amounts of fish on both high and low tides. But I always fish around the tide changes themselves
I was using a 2/0 heavy duty hook at the start with a 3.75' Munroes Paddle tail in UV motor oil. The big fish at the end was on a 1/0 heavy duty hook (TT lures headlockz) with a 3 inch Zman slim swimz in watermelon red.

Funny you say that, it went in not long after this with a blown bearing. It copped an absolute flogging last Snapper season!
