  • His 176-episode run as Captain Jean Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation transformed Sir Patrick Stewart from a classically-trained, renowned stage actor into an international superstar. But before he took the job, Stewart had doubts the series was going to find success. The original series was cancelled after only three seasons and while the films were successful, they weren’t a perfect indicator of success for the show. In the video above, Stewart talks about taking the leap of faith that rocketed him into stardom.

Not only did they revive Star Trek but they made it better. The casting was magnificent.

I saw ST: TNG when it originally aired, and I was still in single digits of age. This show is what got me to like science fiction, and outside of the hair and some casual clothes styles, it has aged like fine wine. Thank you Sir Pat for taking on this role and meaning so much to so many of us!

Gene Roddenberry’s formula usually is to cast a classical Shakespearean actor to play the captain in Star Trek.

It's funny but before Shatner was on Star Trek he was mostly a classical Shakespearean actor as well.

If I were the casting director, the bald shakespearean actor would deliver the best line and look that ideal for new caption. No more space cowboy Williams Shatner style ( i love both style ). Much more convincing as Caption!

0:01 And in reality it was one of the best descisions ever made in the history of 20th century television!
0:32 Funny, in the DVD-Release he said that he was living in a cottage in that time and watched Star trek on TV....but they told a lot of PR-bullshit in the last 30 years in those interviews.
    1:38 Lol.
Its good that they became more honest in later years.

Initially that was exactly what was thought about Star Trek TOS, that it wouldn’t last half of its intended production time. Somehow the combination of its actors, plots and script writing made the show iconic for its genre. When Sir Patrick Stewart were casted for TNG, the producers convincingly said to him that the show ‘wouldn’t even last its first season’. I think the producers must have thought that ‘how on earth a Shakespearan classical actor could take on a multi-role Science Fiction character based on the most popular Sci-Fi series on television’ and to top things off, Sir Patrick Stewart emphasized (on another interview) that he ‘was not a Sci-Fi guy’ and that Sir Ian Mckellen himself did advised him not to take the role (as Captain Jean Luc Picard). Time and again, Sir Patrick showed us that he was the right icing for the cake, and despite of his classical upbringing, he took the role as Picard and made an impeccable acting on it. He is a brilliant A-list actor who is both intelligent and talented.

People forget now, but the first episodes of TNG were not that good
But I recall liking the cast and for me that gave them time to get the writing better. It's something I recall with Cheers, Seinfeld and other series.

Looking back, season 1 is pretty awful and downright painful to watch. Season 2 isn’t much better (Pulaski), but there is improvement. Only starting in season 3 does the show start living up to its stellar reputation, after the cast really start gelling together with the help of better writing.

I've just watched the whole series for the first time in my life, and I pretty much liked the first season. It has a cute retro vibe, and the actors where almost as good as later. Of course, the stories became much better, the characters evolved in a good way, but I still think that Season 1 rocks.

The crazy thing is some actors even some considered very good can go from failed show to failed show.I see the point of his agent saying the reboot would probably fail because many have or are just viewed as a cash grab and many who like an original wont like the new one.The new Point Break movie did not need to be made pure cash grab like the dozen others.
That '80s Show and now that 90s show.80's show wasnt a reboot and either way I have no desire to watch either and never have.If that 90s show survives I will be amazed and impressed.

    • @koloth5139
      @koloth5139 6 років тому +3

The was a rather surprising amount of backlash from the fans of TOS against TNG before it even aired. Many felt it was some sort of betrayal of the original cast. Plus TOS didn't work why would a sequel work? TOS didn't really get a strong following until the 70s in reruns. A strong enough following to justify a second series that turned into a movie. Yes the motion picture was supposed to be a TV series originally. And the movies had a strong enough following to finally get that TV series. But it wasn't the same cast and crew it was something new and different.
Consider this, why did Enterprise fail? It came about after 14 years and 3 very successful series. So why was Enterprise the one to fail? Because it tried to do something different than what the fans were used to and what they wanted. That in and of itself isn't bad. But it was bad for the show because people wanted more of TNG and DS9. Maybe not so much Voyager but it was still a success. When you introduce something new and different there is always a chance for failure. And TNG was very different from TOS.

it's frankly a miracle the show survived not only beyond season 1, but also their awful pilot! I guess people were more forgiving back then, possibly because there wasn't another sci-fi show on (Knightrider maybe?) and the number of channels. what else would people watch?
