Will this be the last 50 over World Cup? I know that sounds kind of weird. But ODI cricket has been dying for some time, and the only thing that gives it life is the World Cup. So why not just follow the current trends and change it to a T20 format and be done with all the nonsense of a dying format and just play the one that is actually working?

many moments of T20 WORLD CUP
      1. yuvi 6 sixes in 2007
      2. ind pak bowl out in 2007
      3. gayle destructive 88 vs aus in 2009 and aus eliminated in first round as aus lost to sl as well
      4. hussy 60 in 24 balls and winning in last over as aus needed 19 in last over in semi vs pak in 2010
      5. samuels match winning knock in finals vs sl in 2012
      6. ned chasing 190 inside 14 overs vs ire to qualify for main round in 2014
      7. yuvi 10 in 22 balls in final vs sl results vital as ind lost and sl won the world cup in 2014
      8. ban lost the close match from the situation 2 runs needed from 3 balls vs ind in 2016
      9. eng chased 230 runs vs sa in 2016
      10. kohli one of the best knock of 82 runs vs aus to won the match for India in 2016
      11. braithwate hit 4 sixes in a row vs eng in final to won the match and wi won t20 world cup twice
      12. pak chased 152/0 vs ind in 2021 and beats ind for the first time in world cup history
      13. wade hits 3 sixes in row vs pak in semi for aus and aus win in 2021
      14. kohli 83 runs one of the best knock which helped ind to a famous win vs pak where he also hits a six against rauf which is one of the best shot in 2022
      15. zim upsets pak in a thrilling encounter in 2022
      16. ned upsets sa not expected at all which helps pak to qualify for semis in 2022
      17. eng beats ind one sided by chasing 170/0 in 16 overs in semis in 2022
there are many which i have not mentioned for ex nz played 2 super overs in 2 consecutive matches in 2012 t20 world cup
so t20 have given many iconic moments and that too in a more thrilling way and that too inside 15 years so tell me more greater iconic moments of odi world cup and i bet their wont be many and in t20 world cups there are already many moments so t20 can only give us many more iconic moments in coming years

the rules of odi changed over the years to make the game more interesting and competitive so it means odi always needs changes so still now again changes are required so this format lacks from the beginning as it always needs changes whereas test is always the same and t20 from 2005 now its been 18 years and no changes done its original and same whereas if you look when odi introduced in 1975 after 18 years means 1993 so it became 60 overs to 50 overs field restrictions are introduced for first 15 overs and white ball is introduced and one more change of limited bouncer so in 18 years only odi rules changes and whereas t20 in 18 years doesnt change bcoz t20 is amazing with its original rules and odi needs changes to be amazing time to time
so if you need changes time to time so scrap the format and go with t20 and test which also increase the quality of cricket as icc only needs to look after 2 formats and it also saves lot time for players and teams and icc can use this time to introduce test world cup maybe and more t20 series with the meaning of qualification for t20 world cup like test championship in which teams play series 3 home and 3 away so it also give time to play more test series as well so teams can play 4-5 home and away series with diff countries and can make cycle of 3 years rather than 2 and top 6 sides play test world cup every 4 years and similar should happen in t20 as teams play 5-7 home and away series or qualification tournament structure can also be developed but it can only be happen if odi is scrapped and t20 leagues also get more time as well and more money would be brought to the game

I don’t know why these conversations are coming up. ODI cricket is great. It gives everyone more chance to show their skill. Not just one good ball or one good shot deciding the game like T20. Bilateral ODIs can definitely be cut short.

    • @tbp33911

Bilateral ODIs have already been cut short. Think of the number of ODIs most major teams played across this summer. Barely as high as the number of T20I series they played and that's worth pointing out because it's an ODI WC year. Most fans would've preferred Australia and India to play two more ODIs than watch India randomly play another T20I series in Ireland. That and the T20Is new Zealand played against UAE are very important for the development of smaller cricketing nations but could've been scheduled better.

The winners of each region will play in an ICC double round robin format type tournament. And in test we should have divisions like in football the bottom half of the table in Icc TC will get relegated and Icc should give test status to 3 more nations to make it of 6 teams for division 2. the top two will be promoted to division 1. For ODI they should have more teams qualifying for the World Cup

ODI format is unique as it is the beautiful mix of t20 and tests and needs to be preserved. Bilateral ODI series can be cut short. Those players who are involved in tests and t20's are automatically horning their ODI skills, apart from few strategic decisions. Cricket needs all three formats to survive and thrive. ODI is the best there is , it provides for good batsmen and bowlers to perform. There is enough time for players to make a comeback and it's not too long that new guys just crumble. ODI is the perfect game of cricket there is , there's no ambiguity of draw like test , there is actual test of endurance unlike T-20, just look at the modern day bowlers, they can't bowl 5 overs properly and the batsmen are in a madmen batting contest. ODI has the sense of limited overs, enough time for experts to show why they are experts but not so much that new players crumble and fall.

It seems to me that ODI's were an answer to Test that was more suited to the reality of the 19th - early 20th century. If you are going to expand into new markets (such as the MLC) T20 is the only way Cricket can even hope to get a foothold in my rarely to be humble opinion. Yes there will massive resistance from older fans. We went though massive caterwauling to some very minor changes to Baseball n the US this year and you would have thought the game was being turned into ping pong (but it worked. Game times went down and base stealing is back and the changes were a win all over). Change will always see resistance, and that resistance will always fade away when offered a more entertaining alternative.

Now coming to champions trophy, well it's just a world cup in disguise isn't it?
I mean think about it, all the efforts that a team would have to put in in order to get into a odi wc final be it group stage or round robin, they'd have to put the exact same efforts to enter the same in a champions trophy event. That kinda reduces the value of the world cup and also this kinda makes it bilinear coz champions trophy is 2yrs apart from either world cups.
You basically want to have another world tournament which literally mimics the world cup in it's format in order to grab people's attention.

Here's a suggestion, Why not eliminate all bilateral ODIs, which often lack significance, and instead introduce an annual Champions Trophy-style tournament? The top 8 ranked teams could participate in a league format, while teams ranked 8-16 play in another league. The top two teams move up, and the bottom two get relegated. This could be played within a month a month for ODI matches, played annually in different countries and culminating in a multi-team World Cup every four years. It's a simple solution that adds a competitive element and ensures a structured pathway to the World Cup.

The only thing that needs to evolve is that it needs to be of 40 overs per side now, as it had changed from 60 overs to 50 overs in 1987 WC. This little trick will work wonders and ODI will again start attracting masses.

It makes middle overs boring. ODI cricket is vital for growth of cricket itself. Because it's the longest format of the game associate nations can play internationally.Even if it is reduced to 40 overs we can maintain the identity of ODI by introducing fair play between bat and ball. ODIs marry skills of playing the long game and the aggression of t20. Preservation of Test cricket for broadcasting is just stupid. Second t20 leagues like IPL contribute a lot for cricket survival and finance . Third I keep seeing people saying test is real cricket ashes is real cricket , its utter bullshit they are barely filling there stadiums and no one got time to sit and watch for 5 days , its not that I am being disrespectful but they need to grow up . People attack IPL and BCCI but they actually are the heart of cricket and all these who are disregarding it are just jealous of its success. England , AUS , SA , NZ , etc have very low cricket fans which is depleting fast ,its subcontinent that is keeping Cricket Alive . Do you think ICC will put restrictions on IPL or BCCI they never because 70 % of there revenue comes from India .
Just let them do what they want to do and if you got problem establish a league of your own or stop sending your player also cricket will continue where it is loved other than where people want to stay in a 100 year old Bubble and protest against other Leagues just because they didn't make it to the same level .

Hey Jarrod. I don't know if you're going to read this comment or not but I think you are assuming global cricket will take care of itself based on global market demand and supply ignoring the possible external push from any party.
I totally agree with you that Boards and Broadcasters will tend to lean in favor of ODI world cup till it brings in more money than T-20 WC. To be very honest, I think even if bilateral ODIs die totally, if ODI WC continues, it will bring in more revenue for a very long time.
But let's think about it for a moment. Who benefits the most if T-20 WC becomes the dominant WC? Obviously the board that already earns the most from T-20s. That's BCCI through IPL. 2024 WC is supposed to host 20 nations and cricket, theough T-20 format is on the verge of going truly global. And the IPL will be the biggest league of that new global sport. New viewership means there's a lot of money to be made. I'm not saying it's a bad thing but I'm saying the possibility of that 20% probability seems really high now.
That's why BCCI wants it done as soon as possible. There may be a deliberate attempt to sabotage this ODI WC.
No opening Ceremony in a country like India is a sign of things to come. As various news media covered, There's hardly any banners or posters regarding ODI WC on the streets of India. Don't you think it's a bit suspicious?

It involves the best of two worlds (patience needed like tests and hitting needed like t20). Enough time for strategy making and ups and downs to take place. I never liked IPL but while I liked tests I must say a game that lasts 5 days and ends in a draw is not really going to gain any attraction to the new generation. I is not suited to the lifestyle of the modern humans. It is a thing of past. Test matches also have the biggest chance of mismatches. West Indies playing India or Australia are always one sided. Test matches need to be reduced. A test cannot not have more than 3 matches (15 days) maybe instead ensure that there are reserve days to ensure results.

Imho the ICC is basically killing the world Cup. I think that by having two forms of the game AND two different world cups (what sport does that?) It dilutes the World Cup and i think Interest and viewership is declining. I didnt even know the Cricket World Cup had started till about a week ago.....not least of all because ive been busy watching the Rugby World Cup... because i just heard no one talking about it or any general interest among anyone I know. And to me whats happening is that Cricket is becoming like American sports where 1) its ALL about the money. 2) World cups dont matter. Its ALL about the wealthy league title (in this case IPL). 3) Most top players wont even play for their country anymore because theres less money in it and because the world cup is no longer seen as important.
For me.....thats the end of any interest in Cricket. If the World Cup is irrelevant, the best players dont play, theres no history anymore....then i just dont care anymore about it as a sport. I dont care about the IPL. My interest lies in international games. And the T20 world cup is superficial and meaningless at the moment. How many people have any idea who won the last T20 WC? (Im talking about the casual fan/viewer) Or the one before that? But i damn well know England won the 2019 world Cup. And its final was iconic.
Football ⚽ ...the worlds most popular sport.... generates massive amounts of money. But they have always .....wisely ....kept the FIFA WC as the centre piece of the sport. The number one cup and achievement that every footballer in the world can aspire towards. Just look at the absolutely incredible FIFA world cup final with Messi. Utterly iconic, bigger, more meaningful, and more important than any club title he ever won. And far more important to Argentina as a country than any club title.
Whereas Crickets seems happy to kill its own centre piece even purely to chase money and the IPL. In the process making it all mean less and destroying the history of the game.

I don't think ODIs are going anywhere. ODIs catch the tail of the viewership distribution, simply by being longer.
T20s are too short and easy to miss - if you have a meeting or are getting dinner, half or even the entire match is gone! One has to specially plan and set aside a time to watch a T20 game. For ODIs more people can easily fit at least parts of the game in their schedule. Also caters to those who have night shifts and are free during the day. It's easy to just put it on and have it running in the background - one can de-focus from it for 2-3 overs and not miss much, whereas for T20s that's 10-15% of an inning. Not much sport is on during the day, and ODIs fill the gap. Have a 15 min break in your work at 3pm? Watch 3-4 overs of the game on your mobile. Case in point: the recent Nepal vs India match at the Asian Games. I could only watch the last 5 overs of the game. If this was an ODI, I would probably have watched last 25 overs of the first inning and 10-15 overs of the second inning. For folks watching from the ground, T20s can be too much of a hassle for an event which is only 3-4 hours long (getting to the ground, finding parking, standing in queue, long waits and traffic). In an ODI, one can go and relax the whole day, have a party, beers etc. For other sports which are only 2-3 hours long, many people tailgate and have beers the whole day any way.
All of these are good reasons for broadcasting companies to keep airing ODIs and for advertisers to keep advertising on them.
**I strongly suspect that because ODIs are harder for the media-people to cover because of the duration, they crib about it so much, wishing that it dies (and actively trying to create an air that they are boring, so that it does), so that they can have an easier job for similar pay.**

Maybe it's because the T20 WC happens every 2 years. Diluting its prestige in process. To this day, after 50 years of ODI there are only 6 nations who have won it. It makes it very look like the bigger challenge. Whereas, T20 World Cup is comparable to every other franchise league.

bcz t20 is suitable to small teams e.g we hqve seen ireland defeated england ,and zimbabwe defeated pakistan which give hopes to assosiate teams and t20 is played with more than 80 nations
and ipl and other leagues r also reason for weakening of odi cricket
only trilateral series or asia cip like series can save odi cricket

Nothing is bigger than the odi World Cup
And it's a much longer battle rather than two teams smashing the bowlers for 20 overs each Odi world cup is a matter of great pride to the countries playing in them and winning it is why most international cricketers strive to better
