Introducing the first episode of our latest video mini-series: Ernest Roulette!
We'll be premiering a new episode EVERY TWO WEEKS until we've watched every Ernest film.
Each episode we'll spin the Ernest Roulette Wheel™ and let fate determine which movie we'll watch and critique. Afterward, we'll rank each Ernest adventure and determine the ranking of the Worrell filmography from top to bottom.
Make sense? Ok, good! Watch away!

I say this with zero irony or snark: It's a shame that Jim Varney's Hollywood career never really took off.

Hollywood is a cess pit. Varney is better than that.

Dr. Otto did play in cinemas. Jim Varney came to the theatre my father ran in Richmond, Indiana to promote the film. He was only really known for the commercials he had appeared in up to this point. He was also promoting his "Hey, Vern" book at the time.

I saw this movie in theaters in Cincinnati, Ohio. I think the movie was released regionally.

I just finished watching Dr. Otto. Jim Varney didn't just chew his scenes, he gnashed them into powder, then proceeded to swallow the rest of the movie whole. Does that read like a compliment? Because it is.
The man was an effortless genius, and I couldn't get enough of his performance(s).

According to his nephew Justin Lloyd's book THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ERNEST, "Dr. Otto" was released in the US in a limited release (largely in the SouthEast and the MidWest), but it was also released in Europe under the title NEVER GET POOP ON YOUR SHOE (and apparently Varney hung a poster with the European title in his home up until his passing)

I saw Dr. Otto for the first time ever last night, and I enjoyed it, though I did have trouble following it. I kept wondering if it was made on drugs or if it was meant to be a callback to old sci fi b-list movies. I like the bad '80s special effects and '80s music in this. I feel this would have made a good afternoon series.
I first heard about this in 1996 when a friend told me about this, at a time when I was really into Ernest. I looked it up in Video Movie Guide and Golden Receiver Video Movie Guide and I think Jim Varney was the only actor listed, so I was expecting him to play almost every role (I was thinking he'd play the hero at least). There was only one video store I frequented that had it but for some reason I never rented it (ditto with Ernest Film Festival, which was at two or three video stores I knew of and never rented, even though I wanted to see the commercials and wanted to know who Vern was, unaware that Vern was unseen - I had overlooked the fact that he had a scene in Ernest Saves Christmas).
I wasn't thinking about the fact that there doesn't seem much info online, didn't realize there's no info on whether it was released in theaters (is John Cherry still alive?). There doesn't seem to be a lot of behind the scenes info out there on Ernest (the DVDs and Blu-rays don't have any audio commentary).

My friend and I just found this movie today by freak accident. We had absolutely no idea this was an Ernest movie until we watched the first minute of it, and were absolutely blown away the entire runtime.
What are the odds that someone uploads a review of the film the same day we discovered it lol

Just watched the first episode of Hey Vern, It's Ernest!, just barely remembered watching some episodes on CBS or Family Channel. Handful of the same actors, and even had Dr. Otto in it. Thanks for the inspiration.

EDIT it was the second version I saw. I'm remembering that for some reason I got this movie confused with City of Lost Children, I don't know how. Holy crap though, this is digging up a lot of weird forgotten memories from when I was little.
