    The second episode in our video mini-series: Ernest Roulette! This time, it's a movie you've heard of.
    We'll be premiering a new episode EVERY TWO WEEKS until we've watched every Ernest film.
    Each episode we'll spin the Ernest Roulette Wheel™ and let fate determine which movie we'll watch and critique. Afterward, we'll rank each Ernest adventure and determine the ranking of the Worrell filmography from top to bottom.
    ME FOR YOU! AND YOU FOR ME!

    I really like this!!!! I hope y'all continue to do this through the entire filmography!! What surprised me a little and what I feel sets this apart is that rather than taking an adversarial position and just getting jokes out of how bad these movies are, you clearly appreciate what comedic work/talent there was and approached it with 100% sincerity and affection for Varney and for the character. I mean I like youtube videos that dunk on shitty movies well, I have no problem with it at all, but there's something really different about this series tonally that I REALLY appreciated. I've liked all of the short film and podcasting stuff of y'all's that I've seen but I just became a patron specifically for more Ernest Content, not because it's Ernest lol but because of y'all's approach. This is really cool! Excited to see more of it!

    I like this passage from Nathan Rabin's recent review. Great point.
    "You incongruously have to be incredibly charming to make audiences love a character as deliberately irritating as Ernest. But it goes beyond that. Varney lends the character tremendous pathos as well.
    There’s an extraordinary sequence in the film’s third act when it seems like all is lost and the camp will soon be in the hands of pure evil when Varney, as Ernest, sings a song. An ENTIRE song. Like in a musical! Only Ernest Goes to Camp is no musical, only a weirdly ambitious comedy where original music plays an unexpectedly central role.
    Bear in mind that the song Ernest sings is not a silly ditty or a goofball comedy song but rather a tremblingly earnest (no pun intended) ballad about sadness and hope called “Gee I'm Glad It's Raining.”
    This should be an INCREDIBLY embarrassing, tone-deaf moment. This is an Ernest movie, after all, not an Arthur Freed song and dance-packed extravaganza. Instead the song succeeds smashingly because there’s a core of genuine melancholy underneath the goofball antics, an exuberant sweetness that’s hard to resist."

    Note: Mark Volman wrote "Happy Together" and lives in Nashville, the same place where John Cherry and Coke Sams operate their advertising agency and production company out of. I can kinda buy Mark being snuck in as a really quick blink-and-you'll-miss it cameo during the "Happy Together" sequence, but not during a hike.

    It's interesting you bring up that Ernest isn't trying to date the nurse, until recently I thought he was attracted to her, but aside from a brief mention of her being a beautiful woman, it seems like they are just really good friends.
    This past Summer I realized that most of the stuff with Jake and Eddie don't really have to do with the plot. They do greet the kids and have one scene with Ernest, but everything else with them feels like they could have been filmed at a separate time to pad out the plot. Even when they join in on battling the bad guys, they never appear with Ernest and the good guys in battle. Interesting fact (I'm not sure if that gets mentioned in later videos, haven't seen them all): Daniel Butler, who played Eddie, would also play many roles on the Saturday morning series and have a role in each of the Touchstone films (including one of the animal control officers who appear with Chuck and Bobby in Ernest Saves Christmas).
    There doesn't seem to be a big difference between most of the kids, but Moose does seem to be the nice one, with no clues or explanation of why he's one of them. Maybe he should have started out mean and changed fast.
    The councilor who drowns Moose is the same who gets hurt, named Stennis. He tells Moose he'll learn to swim the Stennis way, and when they knock him into the water, they say he's learning the Stennis way.
    After watching this for the first time in years recently, I've noticed that this one seems to have the best music in an Ernest film. I wonder if a soundtrack album was released.
    The rest of the theatrical films have a more awesome opening credits sequence (often with illustrations or film effects), this one's credit sequence is more basic... But it would make a good opening for a television series. In fact this one feels more like an episode of an afternoon television series.

    Ok I have to ask, why is this a Touchstone Picture? Why can’t it just be released by Disney? I thought Touchstone was more for an adult audience and the Ernest movies are aimed more for the youth audience.

    • @TVindustries5000
      @TVindustries5000 5 років тому

      they probably saw the potential in Ernest but didn't want to make him fully apart of the Disney brand identity

    • @TimThomason
      @TimThomason 5 років тому +2

      Touchstone was created because Disney found it was losing money (see: Tron and other early '80s films) on films that didn't really fit the public consciousness as a "Disney film".
      Ernest is an original character, created and well-known before the Touchstone deal. He's not an original property. They want to maximize profits from this film, which has high appeal to a segment of the audience, but feel they might lose that if some see it as potentially a watered-down, sanitized version of the popular commercial pitchman (which it is, kinda, but whatever).
      This isn't Disney's take on Ernest P. Worrell, this is the real thing, by and with the creators. Using the Touchstone label gives the legal fiction that it has no connection to Disney-fying the character.
      Also, Touchstone was a couple years old, and trying to establish themselves as a semi-independent studio, so many of the early decisions may have been made by the Touchstone President and his staff outside of the Disney CEO's purview, before Disney took tighter reins in the '90s and 2000s.
