My mum had one of these - in dark blue with ivory interior. It was a lovely looking car. I remember going to Bremen as a child with them to collect it and getting a tour of the factory. Thank you for the nostalgia!

I’ve owned Mercedes’ for over 30 years. I had this exact model in the early 2000’s and had a lot of fun with it. It wasn’t however Mercedes’ finest hour. The plastics in the interior had a cheap feel to them, the leather needed regular feeding to stop it going hard and the paint Mercedes used was pretty dreadful. Incredibly rust was a major issue and all of these irritations are reflected in the low values of them. If you’re thinking of buying one check, double check and then check again the roof opens and closes smoothly with no problems or pauses.
It’s common for these to fail and the electric motor/hydraulic system is very complicated and mega expensive to replace.
If you find a rust free low mileage model with good service history and your not using it as a daily driver and keeping it garaged go for it.
In time they will start fetching decent money because so many of them have been scrapped.

I disagree about saying that the roof system is complicated, I saw videos about how it works and actually, it is one of the easiest, no only my opinion but from ppl who work on convertibles full time...Also leather seats have maintenance and these ones hold very well the pass of time because they are good quality, just my 2 cents...

There was a 2002 CLK living near me, right on the coast. At eight years old it had rust streaming down the sides, holes in the wings and flaking cills. It was scrapped at twelve years old, shocking really.

I've owned one of this 320 ,with red and black interior, for 4 years. What an amazing car !!!! And whit the ESP off,it it a joy of handling and drift. Much more precise ,than the e46 m3. . The only complaint I hade, was that the rigidity was not that good, but was not affecting the car precision. But the e46 convertible is more body rigid, but not as well and precise in handling, as this CLK.

Yep. When I first got mine, I instructed my mechanic to put in IRIDIUM plugs on its initial service as I intended on keeping the car for a long time. It was a bit of a shock to be handed a bill for $500 but after 5 years of faultless service ( in this time the only problem that occurred was a blown brake light bulb )
      That cost was long forgotten.

Lovely autumn drive, that. With one of the most suitable convertibles for the season, I'd say. The first-gen Volvo C70 convertible was an interesting and very handsome rival to this back then, if I was in the market for an older stylish 4-seat quality-convertible, I think I'd look for one of those. Another rival was the Saab 9-3 convertible.

Not bad. Had a 307cc with hard folding roof, those are a bit underrated methinks if one wants a cheap four seater cabrio. *que the top gear image with one parked and smoke pouring out of it* . After 2005 or so the electrical gremlins of PSA were mostly solved in my experience, making it possible to pick up a nice car for cheap.
But these mercs are also nice, I personally would always prefer a folding hard top though. Love the red/black interior of this example.
I realise this comment was mostly off topic and borderline irrelevant. I apologise.

    • @GoldenCroc
      @GoldenCroc 3 роки тому

@@byronmills5952 Mine was also fault free, but I realised I am extremly sensitive to tire noise, which was a weakpoint of at least my example. To be fair, we have very coarse asphalt where I live, on "continental" asphalt it was a non issue. So, sadly it had to go. Still miss it, and checked up on it, but it has disappeared from the register so it has been exported or written off, unfortunately.

Beautiful car, maybe something I'd consider owning in a better life as a second vehicle for weekend leisure drives, like going to the beach in summer. From my experience with the Mercedes A class I'd still hate the multifunction lever, I much rather have wiper controls separate.
I happen to drive an Audi A2 now that also has red leather interior and I'd recommend finding one like that to take for a drive. It's an interesting little car, kind of unique because of the aluminum body. Lots of info about the A2 on the a2oc forum.

Lovely car, I have a late second generation clk coupe, not convertible from December 2009, so right tow the end of production, that the original owner specified with every available extra and I love it. Indeed to keep it as long as possible. As low mileage and I only do a low mileage myself, the only time I will have to get rid of it is when they ban petrol cars. At that point I will just stop driving. Mine has paddle shifters on steering wheel , but I’m lazy and just let the automatic do it’s thing. I had an earlier second generation 2004 clk that I also loved. Only changed that, when I saw the one I now have for sale. I only changed it as the one I have now is lower mileage and was specified with every extra available. At age 51 I hope to still be driving it until I am too old to be driving. But, more likely scenario will be until they outlaw the driving of petrol cars. I love the red and black interior on this one, absolutely gorgeous looking car! It’s not showing for sale on their website? Nor does it show among their recently sold cars, perhaps they haven’t got the listing advert ready yet? Love car and fantastic comprehensive review as always. No tea shelf on these and no cup holders in second second generation model of clk either 😂 They have one pop out compartment on dash that they call a cup holder, on the second generation, but it’s too small in diameter to fit a cup in.

Regarding your comments on scuttle shake: It's subjective, what you consider to be minor might not be to someone else although of course things do become more apparent the more you drive and the longer you own a car. To be honest thought I could see the camera wobbling and the wing flexing against the bonnet as you drove, unless it's just vibration in the shot. The MB owners forum has concerns from owners regarding this. I've a Lexus convertible and it does it more than my MX-5 did, but less than my old Escort! Apparently it's down to wheelbase length, overhangs and centre of mass. Obviously cutting the roof off drastically reduces stiffness. Friends of mine spend a fortune adding bracing, but a BMW suspension tuning specialist is quoted as saying that even elaborate modifications wont really result in any appreciable improvement in ride or handling. Now with a sperate chassis it's a different story, but then body panels can rattle, seem you can't have your cake and eat it! Regards to you Matt, keep up the good work.

Fabulous but is this model not very prone to the tinworm that afflicted the E class of this era ? A chap I know owned a gold coloured turbo diesel one of those and it literally disintegrated before his eyes. He'd initially paid big money for it but after about five years, sold it to an old fella for £600, having been totally up front about the suspension towers all but collapsing etc. Perhaps convertibles tend to lead a more sheltered {from the rain} life.

The CLK doesn't use E-Class body parts (would be nice, sigh...). They just look like that, but it's all CLK.
A convertible with leather seats and without seat heating (no buttons on the center console)? Ohoh...

Only 218 hp from a 3.2L V6? That is poor.

Acceptable but not groundbreaking in late 90s. The 330s put out around 10bhp more but this was for cruising not tearing around. Dont forget this was the era of mainly NA engines mondeo and vectra 2.0s were only making 130 or so and bigger v8a high 200s ir low 300s 540 made 282 and the e430 around the same. For the time it was plenty.

Who specified a colour scheme like that? More importantly who designed it to be available? A car spec should always be chosen with resale in mind and many people would have walked away from this over its time as it divides opinion too readily.

A car spec should never be chosen with resale value in mind lol, that's exactly why everyone drives grey over black boxes with no creativity, it makes the world a boring place!

    • @richardhowlett9424

Wrong ! When deciding how to spec a car it should be how you want it , don’t think about future drivers .

I agree that interior ruins it had it got a black interior it would be worth more and sold far easier .If it was newer and you had the black trim out of another car it would be worth swapping

@@richardhowlett9424 not all that red though is not nice and the red dash and steering wheel is nasty .I could forgive the interior just if it didn’t have the red dash and steering wheel. Black interior also get better resale as it wears better and 90%of second hand buyers prefer it over more hideous colours
