    For me and many others, the allure of ARGs and other horror series is not necessarily tricking people, it's more providing a story, visuals, craftsmanship and maybe some puzzles. Obviously everyone has different tastes, but my personal favorite is probably the Minecraft Alpha Versions ARG, not just because of the intrigue but also because they actually made the versions playable.

      @knaughta.masso-kist5944 8 місяців тому +15

      @@caoilfhionndunbarThe big difference with stuff like Dracula and to a lesser extent stuff like Sherlock Holmes and Frankenstein, is that no one acts like you're "ruining the fun" if you label them what they actually are, fiction.
      However with much of modern day "unfiction", acknowledging their fictitious nature is seen as taboo, and their creators will assert their realness, and it becomes impossible to tell if fans actually believe it, or are just pretending to believe it as part of the experience or whatever.
      If these things exist on their own website or forum like SCP for example then I don't see an issue, but when they are uploaded on TikTok or UA-cam where anyone can stumble across it and be tricked into believing it, as shown in this video, it becomes problematic IMO.

      Frankly if all the people doing ARGs just made an actual interactive game, some sort of video-media game, a video game if you will, instead of pretending that it's real and presented via social media and stuff, I think you'd get a lot more people interested in them.

    Hey Captain, great video as always, but i wanted to note that the thing you're referring to in this video as "ARG" is actually called "Unfiction".
    ARGs are games usually involving complex puzzles that can take place in both a virtual space and real world locations, where many people work together to find a solution.
    Unfiction is more in line with what you described in the video, individuals making a story through common social media platforms and acting as if it was the real world, often taking input from users interacting with them.
    ARGs *can* smoothly implement Unfiction aspects to it and vice-versa, but they are still separate forms of media.

Like, there'd be a story, but nobody involved would insist it's real if you asked them about it, they'd either say it's part of the work the intro was found in or that it was an ARG they were trying to solve.

    Dear Captain, I absolutely love your channel and I’ve watched every morsel of content on here. I absolutely adored your Flight of the Navigator deep dive (and subsequent jokes about its view count). Your wit, humor, and sense of story are matched only by your obvious and unrelenting work ethic.
    Thank you for each and every video you produce. They are fun, educational, and obscenely underrated. You inspire me to keep hammering away at my own creative pursuits. Also your sign-off slogan might be the coolest thing I’ve ever heard. Please keep posting!

    These are some cool effects, but I feel like the opening's rather boiled down view of Unfiction (ARGs involve active involvement of the fanbase to solve puzzles, Unfiction is the overall genre of "This is a real thing happening" fiction) is unfair to a medium that has tons and tons of incredible works. From classics like Marble Hornets to new phenomenons like Welcome Home.

      I dunno. I'm from a future where there is a ghost in my house and based on my future world's history of ARGs, his take seems pretty legit.

      Yeah, a more precise explanation for an ARG is where someone on the internet dumps a bunch of cryptic information about something, often across multiple mediums, and it's more up to the audience to figure out what story is being outlined with the given information. I would, however, say that even this scenario of "ayo bruh where the people go" seems to be presented as actual unfiction and not as an ARG, as there seems to be little opportunity for audiences themselves to come to a conclusion about what happened (compare this to something like that whole "the sun vanished" thing.) So I'd say that the term ARG doesn't really apply to any of this very well.

    I would definitely watch a separate video about how you did that rag doll effect on yourself after around 3:08. Probably a 3D modell and a composited video face, but it looks very good.

    Captain D is one of the few channels where I’ll see something and hope he makes a video about it, this one and the laminar flow are two perfect examples. It’s like they were made just for me, because “I’M THE MOST SPECIAL BOY IN THE WORLD”
