I love how Captain D recreates the raw footage to show us what it would look like. That would be very difficult, but it shows what he's talking about so effectively.
Yeah, not only does he recreate the original footage, he re-does the editing on top of his footage
and it look better than the VFX done by the original videos (I mean that it looks more real)

Electricians will put the covers on so they can complete the invoice and get paid and it's up to the contractor to remove them and put them back on
It's a scheduling issue you don't let one subcontractor stop another one from completing their work

just added fake light source in the montage program and made a shadow from himself.
I always think it’s so impressive how he manages to place himself in shots, or visually deconstruct scenes when all he has to work with is a shoddy quality compressed internet video. Like he must have to spend ages degrading his recorded footage and dealing with blocky compression artefacts to match the source when a VFX studio (by comparison) would always have the luxury of raw high def footage to work with.

Now I'm thinking of getting Captain D on Dude Perfect. Their videos are pretty cool, and I'm partial to thinking that they are real just because none of it seems completely impossible, but you never know.
On the other hand, I think they've had verified Guinness World Records on video. (I should note that GWR is corrupt and pointless, but I'm pretty sure they at least don't get in on fakes)

This video, much like others you've done, is so informative and painstakingly exhaustive, that it should be required watching on advanced VFX artist courses. Great job CD.

You're confused, the artists who made these shitty commercials were trying to get it done in the least amount of time with the money they were given. They are probably laughing that so much frame by frame analysis went into something they did in a weekend and never cared about.
Don't teach new artists to do everything frame by frame perfect, it's just makes you insane and broke.
Yep exactly Jon, and it is the same problem with some computer programmers. The objective was met within budget, the client was happy, that is all that really matters in the business world not how perfect the details of your work are.
Jon Shaffer I disagree. As artists, they can learn what not to do from professional mistakes as much as from flawless works. And students shouldn't be taught how to do the bare minimum for their job; they should be taught how to excel and stand out in their field. Whether they want to actually make an extra effort to be the best is up to them, but at least their education should give them the chance. It's what higher education should be about anyways.
Students should be taught how to excel AND how to do the bare minimum. If they can't do the bare minimum, they will never be successful. Engineers and techies often are horrible business people who have no sense of budget at all. It is imperative to get the job done to the satisfaction of the client and do NO more.
So all it takes for the Captain to notice you is a message of help to fully debunk a viral vid... and also a well thought out and executed video showing your own thoughts on how its been faked.

The fact that I've seen the video like 5 times and this is the first time I've even bothered to look at the windows in the background shows this is actually a non-effective ad campaign for that company. Until this video, of course.
I never saw the fact that it was integrity Windows I wonder if the advert agency created this kid to get this guy to advertise the fact the advert was for the windows....
It is an effective ad campaign actually. By showing the windows in a normal environment, their normalizing the fact the company exists. And gradually through time, drills the image into our heads. So whenever need a companies services, we think of that company above all.

I worked with an ad company once that produced an ad where someone bounced a basketball on his head over and over while taking off shirts that had different messages on them, ending with a shot of him bouncing it into the basket. Know how they faked that? They didn't. According to the director, it only took a few shots. You can hear them all cheering in the ad. They left that in as a sound effect.
They also produced ads with visual effects, of course. That just wasn't one of them. I worked with a guy who built a motor to spin to Tostitoes chip like a basketball. On that Tostitoes commercial, they also had a continuity specialist come in to re-set the bowl of chips after every take so it looked right. She was adjusting the salsa with a toothpick. I was both impressed and amused.
I'd absolutely believe it. They call special effects "movie magic" for a reason, and 90% of pulling off the more mind-boggling effects is doing something in a way so convoluted, and with so much attention to fine detail, that no sane person would ever imagine doing it that way.
Captain D, always humble, unique, and genuine. I like your channel because you focus so much on quality. From the face painting to the mysterious character nature- you remind me of how good the old UA-cam used to be. Your quality-depth inspires me to stay true to my viewers and content production.

Well, I remember old youtube as fail compilations and funny cat videos. Could you elaborate?
I always love coming back to this channel because it is nowadays one of the rarest channels that are solely dedicated to pure, innocent entertainment. Whereas the majority of other UA-camrs have abandoned their original content in search for drama related crap, calling out other UA-camrs for the sake of even more drama and doing shitty, click-baiting challenges, CaptainDisillusion has remained true to his content and fanbase.
And for so much more time! Most of their channels weren't even conceived yet, when the captain became our savior!
There are plenty of channels that don't do that shit. Most channels about technical topics avoid it. Stay away from 'entertainment' and more towards the 'education' side of the spectrum and you'll be spared the middle school bickering.

Captain you always talk about the sloppy edits people make that you find. I don't mean for this to sound like a challenge but you should make your own fake video and see if the community can figure out what you did.
Captain D secretly makes every viral effects video on the internet, but does so sloppily, so he can later debunk them. It's the perfect crime.

Wow! I just found out about Captain Disillusion. The amount of effort that goes into creating a video (the research, the debunking, the edits to explain things, the contents such as script to make it interesting). It's amazing how this gets done. Capn D is the MAN. He was so cool to show that film student’s stuff on his own channel while pretending he’s feeling threatened by his expertise. Very very thoughtful and shows he’s not a douche. I just discovered this channel and I’m already fully on board. I was a projectionist and digital media tech for 7 years so this stuff is supremely fascinating to me. Its a common editing practice to use a command like "wiggle" in after effects to "add life" to a static, or 'locked off', shot. Used subtly it can make a shot a little more visually interesting, used too much and you get a ridiculous motion sickness inducing transformers-esque mess. Of course, its also a powerful tool to hide VFX ;)
Ive used tapes almost everyday for 25 years... all different brands too. They DO NOT act like this when you yank on them or they would not retract. Also they only stay stiff for 10-12 feet depending on angle and thickness of the tape. Great videos btw cap!
