I miss Tweedy taking solos like this...his guitar sensibilities I have always felt are overlooked. Its a style that is very definitive and hard to duplicate. Nels goes off and does some very similar things, but his stuff is either floating around jazz ideas/concepts or strictly texture(which is brilliant!) whereas Tweedy's guitar sounds like a nervous breakdown...and I like it!
So i only really listen to old music, but someone gave me their CD and this caught my ear, i hope all their stuff is similar b/c i may have just found a new band...
I was there that day. The part you missed is Jeff dedicating this song to his wife Sue, it was their 10th wedding anniversary. Very moving. I'd just met Jeff, Sue and the kids a few weeks before at Pitchfork. Lovely family, though Jeff is a weird bird. Calling out Joe Schike; The sound recorded at a live festival by an amateur, then uploaded to youtube is never going to reflect what the audience heard that day, not even at Lolla. The actual sound was so good, I had to walk out of the festival to maintain the delicious vibe I had going before the RHP came on. You're an idiot for expecting better. If you want to hear it sound good, listen to the studio album. The Loft is one of the finest studios in the world and Jeff is one of the best producers. Nobody else I'm aware of records entirely on analogue with tube amps, 40 year-old Fender and Gibson guitars, a Hammond organ and Steinway piano and goes to vinyl before they digitize and go to CD. Just listen to the latest albums by Mavis Staples and Low, or any Wilco album since they built that studio in Old Irving Park. I just hope that Jeff doesn't become more in demand as a producer than as a great bandleader.
There's an organization of 'em. They're usually at festivals like Lolla or Glastonbury. Once I read a story about one that had to translate a Muse concert. That must have been hard.
i think they are unique for sure but not for everybody. its music. youre gonna have varying opinions. i appreciate that you arent putting them down but simply stating that its not for you. i respect that
woah wilco vs radiohead? now thats a battle for the ages. wilco and shugo tokumaru are the only modern bands that can stand with radiohead that ive heard. many other bands are great, but wilco, radiohead and shugo all have this...timeless quality. its a je ne sais quois that i think only becomes obvious 25 years after their biggest release. that and the people inspire, you know, the people who "get" it.
This is my firat experience with them, and I think it's cool that you can hear their influences. It sounds a mixture of acid Sgt Pepper Beatles and Lynard Skynard.
I do wish people could discuss the music of some singers without getting so offended. Tweedy is talented. He's got a different sound and has managed to do what he wanted without troubling himself with commercialism. Good for him. but I also understand how people might find the rabidness of his fan base rather bewildering. It's not the easiest music sometimes. People who like heavy rock might not like it. Okay. That's a matter of taste.
its nice to see such a well thought out response here. shoulda expected to see it on a wilco video, i JUST got into them, you know who i think you'd like? shugo tokumaru. youtube him and listen to a song called parachute (good song to get into him with) and la la radio. la la radio, in my opinion,is one the best written songs ever. its like lesson in how to write a song with many parts, but with flow and taste, not one part of the song is there for "art's" sake.only because the song demanded it.
nice distortion, vibrato and whammy bar action. BTW,the chick is using sign language. She's reading Jeff's lips and reading the notes he's making on the guitar :)
No people. Jeff Tweedy looks like GOD. Rightfully so because he's a musical Zeus. I'm taking bets that "Jesus Loves Me" was in this set. Rock On Mr. Tweedy!
@joe44850 Didn't you see School of Rock? Never mind him, though, what about the blonde chick doing the simultaneous translation for the hearing-impaired? When did they recruit her? She wasn't in Uncle Tupelo and I missed her, was she?
If Wilco is not your thing that's OK. There's plenty of other stuff for you to listen to, but just so I understand, what is better than Wilco in your opinion?
@joe44850 when he has the hat on he looks exactly like dr. john from the piano instructional videos.. please tell what you think, cause the videos of him playing are great too, peace..
if by jeff tweedy looks like God after he created stupidity in the world and was exhausted that he couldnt take it back and so wilco and wilco fans were created then yes i guess jeff tweedy is god. rock on like the 80 year old stones who suck by the way. congrats wilco ...you did it in less time than that. gary oldman looks like Zod ...kneel before Zod.
sometimes when people listen to music it changes them in a way that other people cant understand. this song isnt one of their best but it's a good one. to be honest, the bands that you listed (apart from Radiohead) aren't even half as good as wilco is or ever could be. Jeff Tweedy has been through so much more than you could probably imagine, his lyrics and his music are signs of this. maybe if you would take the time to research the band and artists you'd understand. and yes it's all opinions.
I was at that show...it was one of the most fantastic ones I can ever remember.
One of the first Wilco videos I ever saw ever. Thank you to the uploader for helping me love Wilco to the point of obsession
Heck yeah, I freakin love Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

Nice to see Jeff shred and Nels play the changes.
epic win sir.

you're right. He doesn't look like he's gained weight at all. Thanks for your eloquent response Dude.
I love the sweet sounds of those Neil Young, kinda out-of-tune, kinda out-of-time guitar solos. Brilliant

Hey! I remember that day. There was a crowd surfing killer whale, and everything!
This is my firat experience with them, and I think it's cool that you can hear their influences. It sounds a mixture of acid Sgt Pepper Beatles and Lynard Skynard.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is Kid A in flannel.
which is a compliement. =D
I'm not really into Wilco, but i have to admit Nels Cline is among the greatests actual guitarists.
no way they just get better!
@jfrizzlle it sounds vintage, I'd think like a tube driver, germanium fuzz face. something dirty and amazing sounding.
quero essa guitarra!!!
Aw, she's a concert sign language translator. I've never seen one at any shows I've been to.
@SuperJames2point0, you are a comedic genius, punk.
Cheers,
FrankC32
Jeff looks like he won the Masters.

@joe44850 Didn't you see School of Rock? Never mind him, though, what about the blonde chick doing the simultaneous translation for the hearing-impaired? When did they recruit her? She wasn't in Uncle Tupelo and I missed her, was she?
