Rest in Peace Jay....
This is my favorite lineup of musicians in Wilco. Jay Bennett was great!
I wish I had seen them with Jay! Totally agree with this lineup ❤
I played with Jay in Steve Pride and his Blood Kin. Such a remarkable musician .. so gifted in every direction. We got to open for Wilco at Mississippi Nights around this era and it was great to meet everyone. So many stories! Miss you Jay.
Watched this on my phone.. just sitting at my dining table, no head phones, shitty phone speaker.. and by the end I’m drumming on the tabletop, stompin one foot and smiling. The energy and that tight yet gloriously ragged sound. I will always love this era of Wilco. Jay Bennett - a musical god RIP
Wow if any band has evolved over the years its this one. I have loved every incarnation. And Jay's impact to their musical growth is indisputable. But if one element had changed the sound of this band in the most substantial way its was bringing in Glenn Kotcke on drums. He is a true master and powerhouse all in one.
I grew up w Jeff in Belleville, IL.. meeting him at B&G music, ltd .. first seeing him w UNCLE TUPELO at 100s of St Louis,mo and southern Illinois shows, bars, jam sessions. When Jeff left U.T. , 2 creatures were born . WILCO and SON VOLT. U can hear the evolution of a boy from the cornfields to Chicago just by listening to WILCOs first cpl albums, lol. Jay Bennett was one of the absolutely coolest, most talented guys I've ever known and, honestly, loved. He was so personable, humorous, awkward that he was one of those '3 seconds' ppl.. in 3 seconds u either loved or couldn't stand him, lol. ❤️ Ty for mentioning him.
Afuckinmen❤❤❤ saw wilco 3 times in concert
I’m doing the timestamps cause no one else had the courage to do so
1. California Stars 0:00
2. I’m Always In Love 5:01
3. I Must Be High 9:00
4. I Can’t Stand It 12:05
5. Monday 16:02
They were so exciting when Jay was on stage.
This might be the most upbeat Wilco set I’ve ever seen, that version of Can’t Stand It really kicks ass. Also, John Stirratt has not aged one bit.
Tweedy, on the other hand...
JAY.
Saw them at The Troubador in 95 or 96. Jeff played in his pajamas, Jay was incredible, the whole band was amazing. Magical night, one of the best shows I've ever been to.
Jesus you saw Wilco at the Troubadour??
I have seen them live many times. Jeff was a little cranky during these times. He yelled at the crowd for sitting down in St. Louis too. I still loved every show.
He's never been one to shy away from chastizing the crowd
@@mikem3779 That was when he was an addict. Now that he's gotten clean, he's mellowed out a lot.
No offense to Cline and the other members who came after, but Jay Bennett was Peak Wilco for me. All amazing musicians, but Jay's feel and tone and instincts on all the instruments were just perfect for my ears. He could play a tele just the way a tele is supposd to sound. An ES-355 just the way a ES-355 was supposed to sound. What a savant.
Jay I feel was even too good a musician for that band .
Kick ass song Kick ass performance
does this mean i am getting old if 1999 is reeling in music history?❤️😨❤️😁 lol;)
Leroy Bach leaving was a big blow to the band for me.
What an absolute treat👏👆👍
Not exactly a seminal performance but fun to see this early incarnation. Only Jeff and John Stirratt left. Tweedy's smart-ass comment about loving it when the audience sits down is worth the price of admission.
At a show I was at in St Louis he yelled at the audience saying they looked like an oil painting one time. He's much mellower these days.
Jeff during his drug years
@@mcraft2240 This was peak Vicodin Jeff era.
This video (and all the videos on this channel) are ruined by the watermark. There is really no need for somethjng so annoying right across the middle of the video. Put something in the corner if you have to
Dead pan audience. Maybe unaware of being presented with a Wilco’s Golden age performance.
There were a couple of German girls rocking out (seen in the audience during the last song).
What a great performance 🎭 heard the albums but this is a first for me seeing them live the wilco I am acquainted with where was this filmed?
crowd seems so dead but I watched was jamming out!
The original version of the band?
Is the show they're rehearsing for in the doc when Tweedy gets upset about Bennett suggesting they play "easy rockers"
Are you talking about "I am trying to break your heart"? Cause if so, that doc wouldnt have been filmed for another couple years
Good energetic and tight band, which I never heard of until recently. Where was this concert?
Guessing Germany
I saw them at the Barrymore in Madison on that tour. I ran into Jay and Bob Egan at a bar later. Jay was arrogant. The main thing that I remember about that show is that I had horribly smelly gas and I swear the band could smell it. I KNOW people around me could. Long time ago.
I’m curious why Jay came across as arrogant. Do you remember anything he said? Just curious. Fascinating guy.
Funny if Jeff would have made a smart ass comment.
Who is green shirt guy in the back on guitar?
That is JP the roadie.
One of the roadies filled in on acoustic guitar to add some texture because both Jay and Leroy play keyboards on the song (and so couldn't play guitar then).
Jay has great tone. Jeff is the best Habs jersey wearer, bar none. Great gig, ungrateful audience
Audience seemed to get into it by "Monday" 17:09
This seems typical for a band paying an early set. Crowd took a minute to warm up but there they are.
Another interesting thing in a lot of Rockpalast footage audiences seem to have this reserved reaction, no matter the act. Not sure what it is.
Jay seems like he was a difficult personality to work with but a phenomenal musician. He's contributions on guitar in this, for example, are pretty much perfect.
uncle ken!
jay bennett....was wilco
Ahh..ok 🤷🏻♂️
leroy!
Leroy was a traitor to Jay
Never has a greater performance been more poorly received
I’m not so sure about that. I remember plenty big bands talk about their early days of playing to handful of people not even paying attention.
Playing the international festival circuit can be like that if you're not a headline act. Just because the promoters are big enough fans to put you on the bill doesn't mean the crowd are.
