      It depends where you live. Some of the lower-end neighborhoods, like Palms, Beverlywood, Culver City, are comparable to rents in the north east.

    Just an FYI from an LA Native: West Hollywood and Santa Monica are actually independent cities and not part of the City of Los Angeles. However, they are adjacent to the City of Los Angeles. Now, Hollywood and Silverlake are districts/neighborhoods of the City of Los Angeles. Don't be fooled by the glamour you see on TV. LA has a lot of rough areas.

      Yeah, the closest to the paradise LA portrayed in entertainment media, though not always, is the beach areas of Orange County and San Diego. The first is very suburban, politically conservative, and boring and way out of the budget of most people but shows like Laguna Beach are based there, people can mistake that show for just being a beach near LA when in reality, it feels like a whole different city. SD is like somewhere between OC and LA (in terms of qualities, not location). More going on than OC but still nowhere near as many options as LA, better urban area, a lot cleaner than LA, not quite as conservative as OC but more than LA, etc.

    As someone who has lived in LA for almost 20 years( born and raised here) these are so funny. Just the things people don't realize, and yes there are bad drivers in LA because there are too many people here. I love where I live, but I rarely go into any of those cities she mentions most of those places are things that long time residents aren't apart of. Also, there is a big homeless population everywhere in LA. There is a severe lack of affordable housing due to so many people wanting to come live here leading to rent hikes, and a lot of people who grew up here (usually minorities) are pushed out of their housing to make "trendy" areas. I just wanted to mention this as it is an important thing to consider, and remember that there will be large black, Latino, Asian, and pretty much any other culture around you so please educate yourself before moving here, and be respectful of those communities.

      I think when moving to LA, learn to be an aggressive driver. What Shelby mentioned in her video was a perfect example of aggressive driving. Seriously, you will never get anywhere on time if you aren't willing to bend the driving rules. Also, another tip when driving in LA is to always leave early. There will be traffic no matter what time you are out driving or how far you are going. There's a saying in LA, "If you aren't early, you're already late."

    I’m an apartment manager in LA. Be VERY careful with subleases. It’s not really that common here, and there are plenty of illegal subleases. If you take on an illegal sublease, you could be thrown out, or worse, end up responsible for all the rent if the actual tenant flakes.
    Don’t forget that this applies to AirBnB as well. I’ve had people do illegal AirBnB in my building, and had to turn away folks who thought they could stay here.
    Because of the housing shortage here, it’s ILLEGAL to run an AirBnB in an apartment building. The only legal ones are in single family homes, duplexes, or triplexes.
    If you see an AirBnB listed in a building with more than three units, it could be shut down at any point. I’d stay away. Condos are a grey area, as are rules for smaller cities like Burbank, Santa Monica, Culver City. Remember LA *city* is only one part of LA *county* and places like West Hollywood and Santa Monica, which are separate cities, have different rules.
    Bottom line

    • @33Jenesis
      @33Jenesis 3 роки тому +4

      Great tips! I work in real estate in the west side. I haven’t heard any landlord or management company would allow sublease, especially rent control units. They are waiting to catch you doing it so that they can evict you out of your rent control unit.

    • @33Jenesis
      @33Jenesis 3 роки тому

      @@EliotHochberg it is usually the other tenants that rat out the sublease or AirBnB. Owners or managers don’t like trouble makers therefore offenses like these could have bad consequences. In LA, the buildings with low rents are mostly older long term owners who self manage. Once they die or cash out, the low rent tenants are at risk.

    This is by far, the most educational "LA" vlog I have watched. I live, born and raised, in the Philippines and I am literally daydreaming of living in LA sooner or later despite the fact that I don't have any connections there, I don't know anyone who's currently living there, so basically I'm just praying lol. Given all these facts mentioned in the video, makes me think, what job can I apply for, just to be able to live in LA. I know a lot of people throw negative comments on deciding to live in LA, most of them are even Californians, but for people like me who just want to be independent, explore, and live in an unfamiliar yet we know, happy places "for us", we just want to strive and do what it takes to whatever we feel we should accomplish.
    So yeah, I am literally starting from nothing like 0, I haven't even travelled outside PH yet, so I just hope the stars will align for me one day and let me live my American, let's say Californian dream soon! I hope it comes true! Spreading love from the Philippines!

Get yourself valuable skills for the entertainment industry, tech: graphic designers, web developers, programming, or anything you could do in any field given, freelancer and hired by a corporation. Work on your sales skills, how to promote (yourself). Start by making a plan, putting dates, and a budget on your dream... Faster than waiting on stars to align ;) Create your opportunity, be bold and make your luck! Save, save, save, save, invest, save, be debt-free, save, invest and make sure you're ready for discovery. "Daydreaming" is overrated, just make it happen. Much love from Canada.

    It's funny because I just moved here from the East coast and I have found that drivers are WAY LESS aggressive. People use their signals, honking is not excessive (Ill maybe hear 3-4 honks in a 20 min drive), people drive pretty slow as far as cities are concerned (street lights like every block, you cant even get up to speed before another light.) Driving was the thing I was most concerned about moving here, but it has been the easiest thing to adjust to out of everything. PARKING on the other hand is a b-word.

    LA natives don’t live on the west side thus the most LA part of LA is south central LA, East Los, Inglewood, Crenshaw, Compton, k-Town, Watts, Long Beach, San Pedro, The South Bay, etc. Pretty much anyplace east from K-town, south of Venice Blvd, and north of Ventura Blvd is the real LA.

She said too that Santa Monica has the most expensive rentals when I would say that probably Manhattan Beach and/or Palos Verdes does but since they might be considered too far from Hollywood, its not worth mentioning.

    I don't make a 6 figure salary, but have lived in DTLA and Miracle Mile. It is really important to understand that a significant portion of your income will go to rent, but you can still live a decent lifestyle if you truly desire to live in LA. Some individuals really get caught up in "Keeping up with the Joneses." That will keep you broke! LA's public transit system is quite extensive ($1.75 for metro bus or rail) so you could live without a car. Also, many employers will cover your public transportation costs. In my opinion it is a waste of time to spend hours in traffic just to drive to work (live near your job if possible). Driving to working is counterproductive because you basically have to pay to get to work. I am able to pay my rent and live somewhat comfortably because I don't buy luxury cars. I do own a car (older mustang in great shape) that is PAID for; I refuse to finance cars. Most importantly, don't move here and play "The Joneses" and you could make it.

    If you're older ...don't even bother. Ageism is brutal in L.A. As is Skid Row ...if you do move to L.A. volunteer in Skid Row if you really want to grow as a person. The Downtown Women's Center at 5th and San Pedro is where I volunteer❤

    This video is so aesthetically pleasing! I live in LA but in the Southbay area near the beach. I was definitely one of those people that dreamed of moving to LA and I actually made it happen. I can say after living here for a couple years that it was not what I was expecting and I would never live here permanently. It’s a fun city especially for those in their 20s, 30s who don’t have serious commitments (married, kids, etc.) but it’s super expensive and such a fast paced way of life which is the complete opposite of my experience growing up in Texas. However, I do want to live in a different LA area before I live for good. I’ve always liked North Hollywood but I also like Culver City and have heard good things about Echo Park. That’s one of the pluses about LA is if you get tired of the area your in you can always move to a different neighborhood and have a new experience sadly it will always be pricey no matter where you live in LA.

      The correct answer from a public works perspective is to install traffic lights with left-turn green arrows and incorporate them into the rotation. Uncontrolled roundabouts also ease congestion compared to lighted intersections. And the government should tax personal vehicles like hell and spend that money improving mass transit to the point where it would be stupid to own a car. And zoning should improve to maximize density and mixed-use, so you need to make fewer trips out of your neighborhood.

    Lived here for 25 years. The sad part is all the people who move here with the serious intention to " become friends" with celebrities...Thats it. They have zero meaning/reason or goals here. Its mommy and daddy paying for a "life vacation" for them. Then after 5/10 years of going out 5-7 nights a week in hopes of becoming Kim Ks new BFF of getting some rich actor to date them, they realize that that lifestyle is only for those who WORK in that industry and that NO " famous" person is out there looking for someone who has no reason to be here let alone any goals in this city...Its the 5 -10 year Las Vegas weekend for them. Then they go back to mommy and daddies house..

But, I'd argue that places like Burbank, North Hollywood, and Studio City are easier for people to get into and out of the main hubs in LA. Places like hollywood are high traffic and a highway is not super close. Burbank, NOHO and Studio city are right on main highways(and Burbank you don't even need to get on a highway it's right over the hill from hollywood. VERY central .)

I also recommend Studio City/Toluca Lake which is in the Valley, but right next to all the major freeways so very quick & easy access to downtown/West side, plus if you get close enough to Ventura Blvd you will have literally every single "trendy" shop that you can find in West Hollywood for a much more affordable price, plus its a lot cleaner, a lot of celebs tend to live in that part of LA for that reason. :)

    If you're moving to L.A., find a rent controlled Studio Apartment in Beverly Hills which will cost around 1800.00. You will be judged by where you say you live. Buildings built before 1978 are rent controlled. Beverly Hills is Centrally located, safe and beautiful. South of Sunset is considered the "poor" side of Beverly Hills, but it's still 90210. Driving is a must or you can't function. Expect some of the worst drivers on the planet, that refuse to use a signal light, will be on your bumper if you're driving too slowly and consistently go through Red lights. Yellow lights mean hit the Gas! LA is a Car Culture, you will be judged by what you drive. Get a used BMW or Mercedes certified. Tesla is considered cool to drive in L.A., although most of them are the biggest assholes on road, OK, you got a Tesla, want the window seat? Clothes and Hair, Image is everything.You will be judged by that and your weight. Don't waste hundreds of dollars at a Beverly Hills hair salon paying their expensive rent. Go to Supercuts, but make sure you don't tell anyone. You will be judged by that. Change your last name to Spielberg, Tarantino, or some famous name, then make all the restaurant, club reservations you like. It does open doors. Make sure you don't bring up any topic in conversation other than celebrities and entertainment. If you bring up anything of importance in the world, watch people get a far away glazed, zombie look in their eyes because you're not gossiping about if Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston are getting back together. Get on all the social media platforms and buy as many followers and subscribers that you can.You're value is completely judged by that. Oh, and don't believe one thing that anyone tells you, it's all lies. Other than that, Welcome to LA! Have Fun! :)

    When I moved there I was also surprised that the beach water has zero visibility in it, and it’s only warm enough to swim in July-September. Also every year there’s usually a nasty heat wave around early September and very few older apartments have Air Conditioning (or heating for that matter). Another thing; you’ll probably never see celebrities out and about except maybe in Santa Monica, West Hollywood, or around the airport. The best neighborhoods I think are the South Beach but they are very inaccessible and Torrance gets cruddy once you go inland. PV I think was the nicest spot in town with lovely weather and very safe feeling for those who can afford it. Oh yes, one last tip; don’t drive around the docks in Long Beach! It’s actually mostly private property and cops will bust you. It’s not like in the movies where you can just drive up to where the boats are.

    About the left turn thing: Sometimes people do take reckless turns and go when they shouldn't! But you should also know that we are taught even in driving school TO turn left during the yellow! The rule of thumb is that 2 cars can turn during the yellow-to-red exchange and 3 if it's a huge intersection. Cops will not pull you over for this as long as you did start turning on the yellow because there were too many opposing cars during the green light. This is what we're taught driving in LA!!
    (Tbh none of this may be in legal handbook or whatever but it is the way traffic goes haha)
