    The response I've always had to this idiotic "turn off your brain" shit, is that...what, you're saying that the writing IS bad? It's so bad that you have to "turn your brain off" to enjoy it?

    • @Gotmilk0112
      @Gotmilk0112 8 років тому +33

      There's a difference between "thinking about something" and "trying to find the meaning of life". You can criticize something without picking apart every single frame of the entire animation.
      It's hard to have fun when there's so many glaring issues distracting you.

      It all just comes down to a matter of perspective at the end of the day. I fall under the category of easily pleased so simply "turning my brain off" is as easy as sitting down for me otherwise when brain power is needed, i'll switch it on. Being biased plays a huge factor into whether you'll like a show too. I can't put into words how much I hate it when people say they dislike a show because it's "overrated" or "popular." Like how is that fair? I'm not here to say anything against what you've stated because I do agree with you. Just wanted to give you a perspective from someone with an opposite view.

    • @DieEnteable
      @DieEnteable 8 років тому +9

      Yeah I think what these people really mean is that they feel he's being overly critical. You can find flaws and errors in everything if you try hard enough and oftentimes people that don't see reasons why he disliked the show as big deals (likely because they don't care as much about that particular aspect of anime) may just come to the conclusion that he is criticizing things for the sake of it, not to compare and rate them relatively.

      I don't agree with this turn off your brain as a critic myself. I won't criticize something unless that anime really disappointed me. Some critics fail because either the critic look at it too logically thinking the fiction world emphasis the real world. Once established said made up logic in a fiction, then you can tear it down with critiquing it in that area. Thus creating plot holes because it deny its made up logic in itself.

      though i like to pretend neither of the three shows you mentioned actually exist.

    As far as I'm concerned, the moment someone changes the topic of a discussion from the subject to the person, they have lost the argument. Comments like "Why can't you just enjoy something" is just a lazy ad hominem that is throw out when a person becomes defensive over their differences of opinion. It's intellectual laziness.

    • @WordsofIvory
      @WordsofIvory 8 років тому +104

      You don't have to be an "intellectual" to be capable of critical thinking.
      I never said people aren't allowed to enjoy a show just for the sake of enjoying it. They absolutely are. I'm talking about when people get confrontational and defensive simply because of a difference of opinion.

    I hate "turn your brain off" so fucking much. i'm pretty critical of games I play shows I watch and a couple of my friends very commonly tell me I'm just not doing it right.

    • @owlflame

      ALJustice0 Clearly they are right? why is it so clear?

    • @owlflame
      @owlflame 8 років тому +2

      ALJustice0 In what way? Am I to assume you're against digibro in that "you just gotta turn your brain off" is a valid argument for quality of fiction?

    • @owlflame
      @owlflame 8 років тому +3

      ALJustice0 Well, some people just want more. I mean. I'm critical of games (more so now that I'm a game designer) because I've played some of the better ones that have been presented to me. From simple games that aren't supposed to be taken too seriously (portal, the Stanley parable) to epic adventures with layers of depth and complexity (skies of arcadia, shin megami tensei.) If something is going to try something I want them to do just that. I want them to try.
      I, as a member of the audience, get kinda offended if a game or show feels like the creators didn't give a shit. I'm a huge fan of shokugeki no soma, which has a very nonsensical premise. But had so much effort put into developing the world and the characters so that even if the plot can seem nonsensical at times, pure effort had been put in to helping the audience get engrossed in that world.
      Gurren lagan did this too. Then I watch shows like (I'm just gonna throw out an obvious one) sword art online. And so many things contradict and conflict with each other, or just don't make sense logistically that I just can't handle it. The whole story was created (to the writer's very admittance) very poorly and quickly. And you can feel that when you watch it.
      Now I'm going to keep playing games and watching anime because I love games and anime. I've been buying and experiencing them my whole life. And I'm gonna keep telling people when I feel that something should be avoided and your time would be better spent elsewhere.
      (Like the new suicide squad.)

    • @owlflame
      @owlflame 8 років тому +2

      ALJustice0 Well if it's good, then that's good. If it's not, I'll point it out. I feel like pointing out that I really liked "Sakamoto" which was a show with minimal plot and great presentation.
      I think you think I'm saying I need a plot, I need immersion, I need this I need that. I just think that if a show sets out to do something, they should try at it. Sakamoto set out to be a great comedy and it succeeded. I didn't go on the internet going "the story was non existent! Bla bla bla!" no. But I do feel like if a show sets out to not try, then it's an insult to their fans.
      If you set out to not try, it'll show. The animation will suck, the plot will be hard to follow, the characters will be hard to like. And, at that point, what's the audience's reason to stick around? They'd be putting in more effort than the show did if they kept watching.

    Everyone is getting all pissed just because Digibro is being critical. Are people just...NOT allowed to point out what they see as flaws in an anime? I've only watched a few of his videos, and he never seems condescending, or offensive to other people who may like the shows he is being critical of. He states his opinion in a mostly clear and open-minded manner. He even gives examples to help state his opinion. There is nothing wrong with pointing out flaws. After all, knowing what you DO like about an anime is easy. Talking about the flaws of an anime is much more interesting, cause if you don't, it's just mindless praise. Of course, nothing I say matters. People are still going to be pissed that he doesn't like your "precious" anime.
    This translates to being a critic of any kind really.

    • @jerrycorpschannel
      @jerrycorpschannel 8 років тому +15

      There is nothing wrong with pointing flaws, but apparently I'm an idiot who shouldn't have opinions for liking SAO for example. But the thing is I watch an anime I like it then I go to UA-cam I see a review and apparently it's 1/10 filled with plot holes etc. Then i see a supposedly a good anime said by some reviewer and well I go into it a bit annoyed because the anime I like is bad apparently and I end up finding a million plot holes from the "good anime", but apparently that anime is still good compared to the other one. Tbh though I hate all reviews etc. Oscar for example means a movie sucks pretty much. I do understand that some people like them. But if you want to find mistakes problems you are going to find mistakes and problems. It's your decision if you really want to hate the entire what ever you are watching just because you don't like some part of it.

      How was that open minded when he isn't trying to take in other people's opinion. His egoistic nature just get the better of him. He only cares about what he feels, and thinks is right and acceptable. This is how he thinks, one person's opinion is better than those of 7 billion on earth. Most people of digibro's kind are like that. I have heard him arguing with someone before on the internet. take for instance, that erased topic one about the basement. And it took them 1 hour to get into a conclusion. Simply because there were alot of digression in them. He talks shit about how this anime is bad despite being similar to any other show that he likes. Basically, most of what he says are emotionally motivated. Not by logic. But he uses things that aren't really evidence to talk shit about those anime. Although some of what he says are pretty agreeable. But pretty much, most of what he says are as well, BS.

    • @Chameleonred5
      @Chameleonred5 8 років тому +95

      +Jerry Korpi Liking something is different from it being good. Hating something is different from it being bad. Character, plot, design, music, animation quality... there are many objective ways to judge something's quality, and we can all see those things. If you like something that is bad, that's okay. If you hate something that's good, that's also okay. Opinions are not arguments. But if you want to argue that something is good when it's not, or something is bad when it's not, then you're going to be met with opposition.

    Ok. As a writer/artist who is working on a graphic novel, I love UA-cam channels like these. Because this guy isn't just being all "this sucks!" hell he's not even just pointing out flaws, he's giving proper constructive criticism and feedback about art. As an artist I never see issue with constructive criticism, because how the hell are you suppose to improve if you don't know what you're doing wrong and what you're doing right. He not only brings up animes that he considers bad, but he explains why he thinks they aren't good, then goes the extra mile by showing an example of an anime that did what he's talking about well. That way new artists/writers like me can watch his videos and learn the do's and don'ts of visual storytelling.
    Nothing is without flaws, everything has SOMETHING that's wrong with it. That's not a bad thing. That's just indicative of the fact that it was created by an imperfect human. And certain flaws are going to bother others more than they will other people; that's why there is such variety in media, because there is a great deal of variety in the audience. And since _he_ is an individual, his opinions are going to differ from yours. That doesn't mean his opinions are wrong, as no one's opinions can be (unless based on incorrect facts). And his videos are explaining his opinions.
    And before you get on my case: I did say channels originally, I look for common themes among them to learn the do's and don'ts.

      "That doesn't mean his opinions are wrong, as no one's opinions can be (unless based on incorrect facts)."
      Then opinions can be wrong. It's not because there are exceptions that opinions cannot be wrong. And you have to separate opinion with objective facts, because some reviewers out there conflate both. Like Digibro. If he doesn't enjoy a piece of media, is it because it's bad or is it because it's not his preference? You have to make that difference.

      But in short, high school fleet didn't TRY to prove its bullshit
      they never tried explaining how the school works or what were the motives behind that virus
      They knew these didn't make sense and accepted it just as the viewers were expected to, because that's not the point of the show, if it was the point of the show and the show didn't have other things to offer, then it'd become a problem
      It would have been a problem if the show TRIED making sense with it and acting all oh so deep, because then it's like they're treating you as if you were dumb enough to believe their excuses

    Okay, sharing time. Madagascar. I liked the first two movies. I consider them popcorn flicks, I don't go in with really high hopes, but only that they will entertain me. I am well able to temper my "Suspension of disbelief" but it has limits. The first two movies amused me enough that I could point out the flawed logic here and there and still laugh at it as a whole.
    Madagascar 3. It went complete looney toons and pissed me off within the first five minutes because my "brain wouldn't stop working." I said my suspension had disbelief well tempered. I will believe that cartoon penguins can somehow pull off Mission Impossible shenanigans. But when you tell me that these animals STILL want to go to NY and "Go home" and somehow inexplicably SWIM to another continent to pick up the penguins because people liked them and somehow attract the attention of a completely batshit insane French officer who wants a lions' head on her mantle like a crazy Cruella De Ville but NOT FUNNY. Or a "Serious" plot about a circus animal who's afraid to go through a ring of fire because that somehow hurt him once (when he shows no evidence or scars of this) and yet another character can accordion off the side of a mountain after being smashed into it... I had no joy. No fun. It was painful to sit through. Don't get me started on the musical number.
    Yeah, even when I 'turn my brain off', it's not that I've stopped thinking, it's that I feel that there is something good enough about what I'm watching that it cancels out any individual or collective moments of stupid. This is part of why I enjoy One Piece and Dragon Ball. THey are ludicrous and endorse it enough that I have become invested in characters. They have flaws, lots of them, and some plotholes you can drive a mac truck through... but I like something more than I hate the parts that would otherwise throw me.
    The reason my brain couldn't process Madagascar 3 as funny was because it dropped the internal logic and rules of the first two movies. It became jangly keys and an unfunny Looney Toons wannabe in the process.

    • @JossCard42
      @JossCard42 8 років тому +1

      For my part, I think there must be a bell-curve of enjoyment for this. I like something that is extremely thought provoking and well thought out. I also like something that is so ludicrous and that just expects you to accept the unacceptable. And I have little tolerance in between.
      Like, I hated the first Madagascar. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out who it was supposed to be for. I thought the characters were obnoxious and that the jokes were poorly timed and executed. But, as the series went on, I found that I liked the movies more and more, culminating in the third one which I adored. But, I think it was the sudden disconnect from what had come before it that I enjoyed. And, to be fair, what I find fun, IS finding all of the plot holes and flaws and then laughing at them, and Madagascar 3 offered that in spades while Madagascar 1 was much more tame by having a more solid plot.
      I like to think that watching an MST3K of Madagascar 3 would be much more entertaining than watching one of the first movie.

      Honestly, to me these types of complaints just sound like complete nitpicking.
      I watched the movie, and while I did notice some of those illogical things, I didn't notice very many, and wasn't bothered by any of them.
      Yeah its illogical, but I honestly don't see why that matters. I can never understand how people like DigiBro criticize even the smallest of errors in everything they watch. Wouldn't it be nice to just enjoy something and not complain about quite literally everything there possibly is to complain about?

    • @JossCard42
      @JossCard42 8 років тому +3

      I don't know, I get a certain amount of satisfaction not only noticing errors in things but also to know that others see them too, not just me. Some people can enjoy movies where the plot is secondary and the focus is on spectacle. That's fine. Some people can enjoy movies that focus too heavily on the plot at the cost of an engaging visual element. That's fine.
      Then some people, like me, who enjoy ripping something apart because of lazy writing or lazy direction. And that's fine too. There's no one right way to appreciate anything.

  • @flamingfirefox14
    @flamingfirefox14 8 років тому +86

    When I would use "turn your brain off" what I actually mean is "ignore certain principles/thoughts you have set in your head".
    You ignore things like:
    how did a teenager become god?
    cute 12 year old girls can't operate a ship
    why would you use card games to solve world problems?
    cartoons are for kids/children (the most popular one)
    In anime and the like I feel like there isn't a proper way of me expressing this sort of "turning your brain off", so I use that phrase even though it is not accurate.
    The best alternative is "have an open mind" (however this does sound like your a pompas jack ass and sounds like I'm insulting people I say this to)

    • @0rac1eF0rk
      @0rac1eF0rk 8 років тому +2

      I would actually like to second this despite disagreeing with the principle behind it. There's also a little more to it though, as it also has a matter of ignoring nitpicks even on a large scale to appreciate the tone they contribute to. My favorite example of this would actually be the later entries in the Fast and the Furious series. Heavy Object is similar, if less cultivated. Of course, it's still pretty plain even if you do just turn your brain off, but it's not any different from High School Fleet in that regard. So do have an open mind, because forcing your own idea of what's good or not on something to suit your needs is as pompous as it gets. To put it simply, not everyone is after some exquisite, high-brow entertainment. Sometimes people enjoy media just to relax and get mesmerized by the fun images on screen in the hour or two they have to enjoy it every day. Not everyone is a professional consumer of media. If they were, then supermarket wine and Bud Light wouldn't exist.

      It sounds like the phrase you're looking for is "Suspend your disbelief". That's the impression I got while thinking about "Turn your brain off". In a way, it's like criticizing someone for having a lower threshold for disbelief suspension, or possibly just for having different triggers to end one's suspension of disbelief.

    • @eejdmrj3hw

      Yet one of the most critically praised anime is Neon Genesis Evangelion.

    • @flamingfirefox14
      @flamingfirefox14 8 років тому +1

      +sageoftruth Yeah, I think that's the best phrase for it.
      I'll have to remember that the next time I want to say "turn your brain off".
      I probably have a larger threshold to suspend my disbelief than other people so I can enjoy lots of what many people would consider terrible anime simply because of their premise (popular example: yu-gi-oh).
      So I end up using "turn your brain off" when I feel like people are criticising or judging something simply by looking at it on a surface level.
      I think however the amount of disbelief you are willing to suspend realise a lot on the enjoyment of many shows.
      So "suspension of disbelief" would be a perfect explanation why I like many shows that many people don't
      ps. I hate youtube's replying system (it suuuuucks)

    Maybe I missed something and seriously people please don't be too hard on me but isn't the fact that your're accepting that cute little girls are running a warship turning your brain off? Because trying to make sense of that is almost ludicrous.

    • @Trynottoblink
      @Trynottoblink 8 років тому +75

      Not necessarily. It is reasonable to consciously accept improbable premises for a story so long as they don't break suspension of disbelief and don't otherwise ruin the narrative. I think Digi would say that accepting the central conceit of High School Fleet is easy because it's not contradicted by anything else in the narrative and still allows for (and is consistent with) the humor, action, and narrative tension that make a series like that fun. Whereas the central conceit of Big Order, which revolves around strategy, is hard to accept because it's not consistent with the main characters' succeeding despite their repeated mistakes, which ruins any narrative tension by making their success unearned.

      I believe that the reason its so fun, is because you can watch the show without being taken out of the fun due to problems with the scene. Any show can be fun, but whether or not its enjoyable and worth the time is up to the execution of the show.

    • @blakecandin1140
      @blakecandin1140 8 років тому +4

      Yes, I think you are doing an excellent job of dancing around the fact that the show is a carbon copy of girls and panzer except that it takes place on the ocean with boats and not with tanks on land. I can easily debunk your entire essay by saying that the fact myself AND ShadowEliteHD know that a handful of little GIRLS are operating a warship that takes about 30-50 people minimum is in essence BREAKING your suspension of disbelief. Quite honestly all Digibro had to say was "It's not my style", and move on. However, I'm about to shatter your illusion. Why? Because the whole point of him making this video was to get people like us talking about what we like and dislike. Please leave your cinematic/critic logic out of this...it wants no part in what comes next.

    I feel like the answer to "do you hate fun?" is best put by talking about how there are things that are fun all the time and things that are fun when you are not really paying attention or are drunk.
    The former kind is stuff like Death Note, One Punch Man, Full Metal Alchemist, and anything Trigger, to use my current list of most fun shows, are fun to watch and re-watch. You can get a lot of enjoyment out of them if you pay a lot of attention or not.
    Stuff like Sword Art and Asterisk War can be fun to watch if you don't think about the stupid stuff, and it is easier to not think about such while intoxicated, but you won't get much from them on repeat viewing and they have glaring problems if you at all think about what is going on.

      I believe that "Do you hate fun" is a bullshit question. Everyone has a different idea of fun, whether it be watching Berserk simply for the extremely detailed butchering and bloodshed or watching Lucky Star because Konata is adorable being a devout anime and manga otaku.
      "Fun" is a totally objective thing that will differ from person to person and shouldn't be forced on someone once they've said that your version of fun isn't their version of fun.
      "Do you hate fun" can also be construed as "I can't believe you don't like what I like" or "You're different from me, so you suck".

    I get what you're saying, but I believe the criticism "can't you turn your brain off," is targeted better at critics that chose a single example of a flaw to ruin the story for them, or allow them to nitpick to the point that they dissect something they generally approve of just to show that they're are layers of bad qualities, and justify their ultimately negative criticism.

      Nitpicking generally means that they only tackle a single small issue with a series. Tackling a flaw of a series is fine, but once this becomes a nitpick it becomes annoying for the viewers/readers of the review as well. What about the other part of the series? Why is that not good?
      To put in an example of what you mentioned in the video, imagine if Heavy Object did have stunning visuals, amazing soundtrack, and maybe a slightly more cohesive plot, but still with the points that bothered you. If you still had rated Heavy object badly due to the points mentioned in the video, but mentioned nothing on the visuals, soundtrack, or anything else, that is when it becomes a problem. It undermines the good parts of a series because of a small thing that shouldn't have even dragged it down.
      That being said, pointing out small flaws does have a place in criticism, especially if the same flaw keeps happening and it stacks onto eachother, but once it becomes nitpicky it really devalues a criticism itself.

      Both of his points are his own, and I am sure he stands by them. But given the topic of the video was "turn off your brain" and in the first 45 seconds he changed the video to "stuff i don't like and why" it became preachy very fast.

      Critics jobs have been made obsolete by herd mentality of going online and whining. I don't, nor have I really ever needed a "critics" advice for watching a movie/anime/game. I do like when critics get informal and explain WHY a movie failed, rather than "I didn't have fun, don't go see it". But getting into the grit of it (flat angles, not playing the right characters enough, bad casting, blah blah blah)

  • @StandardsFtw
    @StandardsFtw 8 років тому +137

    "Do I hate fun?"
    No.
    You've fooled yourself into thinking you're objective, as being a "critic". You've come to to the conclusion that you're objective and every rationale you make is objective, so you expect and apply that same level of objectivity to everything. You don't have fun because you analyze things. You're preaching to people about an objective (which is antithetical to fun, which is entirely subjective) reality that doesn't exist. You've simply fooled yourself into putting too much weight to your opinion.
    If you want a tl;dr, you're just being a tight-ass.

    • @thewobbuffetking3273

    • @StandardsFtw
      @StandardsFtw 8 років тому +33

      The WobbuffetKing Saying something doesn't mean you necessarily believe it. "Do as I say, not as I do" and all.
      Listen to him when he explains what fun, why it's fun, and that it *should* be celebrated. Simple, cute, well-animated, expressive, etc. Unsurprisingly, these are all (mostly) subjective qualities that vary in taste from person to person.
      He says prior in the video that dangling keys in front of someone won't entertain them unless they're 1. This is where he draws the slippery slope. He's trying to place an objective value on "fun" by implying that dangling keys is "bad" or stupid and [insert thing that isn't dangling keys] is superior, thus fun.
      Ultimately, if he believed things like this were subjective and vary from person to person -- as they do -- then this video is pointless. It's just dancing in circles in logic with conflicting and contradicting rationales in either an attempt to seem smarter than he is (don't take this as an insult -- it's not meant to imply he's an idiot) or to get easy clicks and views from people that can't see through the holes in the presumed argument he's making.

    • @christopherjnr
      @christopherjnr 8 років тому +12

      As a critic you strive to see things objectively, because no one cares about your subjective opinion unless it validates theirs. As a person it is impossible to truly be objective, critics still strive towards that by trying to state their own natural biases, watching a lot of shows, and talking with others to form a pseudo-objective standard. The biggest issue with digi is that he's arrogant. Extremely arrogant. He throws around his opinions and talks as if they are better and more objective than other people's opinions because he thought of them. No matter how many times he says "everything is subjective" it doesn't mean anything when he still acts as if his opinions are better than others, because he thought harder about them.

    • @thewobbuffetking3273
      @thewobbuffetking3273 8 років тому +42

      "If you want to make others have fun you have to work for it, you can't just dangle keys in front of someone's face and expect them to be entertained if they're over the age of one since they've seen that shit before and they have standards"
      The point of this sentence wasn't meant to say that no one over the age of one can not have fun with dangling keys. He used an example that most people would agree isn't fun to explain that making a show that's fun takes effort and is an accomplishment.
      The reason why this video isn't pointless is because many people use "turn your brain off" to disregard criticism of a show. This can be used in defense of any show and disregards the effort and talent it can take to make an entertaining show in the first place.

    • @StandardsFtw
      @StandardsFtw 8 років тому +5

      christopherjnr "
      As a critic you strive to see things objectively"
      It's equally important to be able to properly differentiate subjectivity and objectivity.
      "As a person it is impossible to truly be objective"
      Sort of, yes. Not necessarily because people can't be entirely objective but because most things don't have standardized, objective measure.
      "critics still strive towards that by trying to state their own natural biases, watching a lot of shows, and talking with others to form a pseudo-objective standard."
      Well you can still have natural biases and make rationalizations that are beside them. I might dislike moe, but I can say that a moe show is well-produce (although that's catch-all and vague, it's an easy example). My bias just means I won't personally enjoy it.
      " No matter how many times he says "everything is subjective" it doesn't mean anything when he still acts as if his opinions are better than others, because he thought harder about them."
      Correct. This is a case of "Do as I say, not as I do"

    but i will say this: being honest "turn your brain off isn't something necessarily bad. Sometimes you want to watch something genuinely bad because curiosity, or because "someone likes it, and is sharing it to you, but out of politeness you watch it even though you hate it" , or sometimes you just want something quick to see. like junk food. or something you know is not good or bad for you but you want a change of pace. variety and diversity no matter how bad or good is.

  • @Kingpinn02
    @Kingpinn02 8 років тому +6

    I think it's meant more as "Can you suspend your disbelief EVEN MORE?". Some people can see something stupid and just suspend their disbelief to a point where they'll find it enjoyable. Take Suicide Squad, as a movie it's pretty dumb and poorly edited, but I was able to suspend my disbelief enough to just enjoy it as a fun super-hero movie.
    Some people only like to suspend their disbelief to a certain point, and that's just fine. Like you said with Heavy Object, you couldn't enjoy it since you couldn't suspend your disbelief over the fact that the main characters seemed to always have luck on their side despite the fact that the show was about strategy.
    I feel somewhat similar to Batman v Superman. On top of already being a boring movie with weird pacing, not very likable characters, and zero levity, I couldn't suspend my disbelief to make it fun for me since that would've just made it even more boring in my opinion. Like you said, if it worked for everything, we'd have no problem staring at walls XD.

    1:38 Holy shit, I can relate to this so much. Yes, I hate these meta devices of "get the whole cast involved just because". It just seems so blatantly pandering to the point of being annoying, especially when the characters who have absolutely no reason to be there do fuck all aside from simply being there because fans. This seems especially egregious in filler arcs for long-running manga adaptations (same with almost every non-canon theatrical film release based off said series).

    • @YamatoFukkatsu
      @YamatoFukkatsu 8 років тому +3

      I just remembered, I particularly hate the whole "cast get-together" bit in harem series. I mean, I can understand why it's done there, since pretty much the whole point of a harem series is showing off all the cute girls (or guys in some cases), but what really bugs me is how it's usually done. Have some crazy event, get all the potential love interests involved, fair enough, but when they show how each character's experiencing said event, there's a sickeningly large amount of focus on the "main" love interest. Like, the series takes every opportunity possible to shove it in your face that the main protagonist is meant to be an item with this one character and the rest of the harem doesn't amount to shit. Oftentimes, there will be a love triangle that puts emphasis on two love interests instead of one, but it's still way too obvious that one love interest is the "main" while the other is just the "rival" who's not going to win, and it still makes the other five to twenty harem mates seem completely pointless.
      Admittedly, I am a bit biased, because all too often, the "main" girl isn't all that great in my opinion. She's either completely overshadowed by at least a third of the other girls, or she's even straight-up one of the worst options in the series (I'm looking at you, you damn Shana clones.... thank god that seems to have died out in the last few years). Then again, when the "main" is the best or one of the best girls, it makes the other girls seem like unnecessary baggage in comparison (pretty much how I feel about OreShura). This isn't to say that I think harems never work regardless of my personal preference, but I do wish there was more balance. Again, stop shoving it in our faces that one girl's totally going to win and everyone else has no fucking chance, and maybe give us some more harem series doing a genuine attempt to go all the way with the harem concept with a polygamous ending on the table (as To Love-ru and Highschool DxD seem to be doing, though I guess I should reserve judging until those series end). And if you are going to choose one girl in the end, at least try not to make it seem so obvious you'd have have to brain dead not to see it. Also, stop making the choice be either "so middle-of-the-road she's dull" or a complete bitch whose character arc has absolutely no success in redeeming her.

    The "Do you hate fun?" and Phantom World talk reminded me of when RedLetterMedia compared Turbo Kid to Kung Fury. Both are jokey homages to old, now goofy things, but only one of them has characters that we like and that turns out to be much more enjoyable to watch.
    Which also takes me back to when Extra Credits talked about game design and pointed out that "the game industry doesn't need more 'idea men'". Anyone can have ideas for what they'd like to see in a game, but to actually make a good game you also need to understand what makes a game good, which is much deeper and harder to grasp. I feel like that is the opposite of the recent light novel surge. A lot of these authors seem to have a lot of ideas for what they'd like to see in a story, but has no idea how to make that story exciting or interesting. Looking at you, Phantom World.

      And you know what, the premise here is bullshit. Plot of the show built entirely on bullshit. And thats why:
      To drive a battleship you need a graduate a navy academy, which is several years of physical and mentally training.
      And our heroes like ten years old. Maybe even younger.
      So what, such complicated things like training in Navy academy is replacement for elementary school?
      I doubt that lolis can write their names properly and grammatically correct, not to mention driving a battleship.
      Yeah, fuck real soldiers, lets kids play in a war for real!

    This definitely is my problem with Overlord. How does Ainz always succeed without earning it and just through dumb luck. He could try to learn how to dominate politics by reading up on physical cues of the enemy, while they do not have such a wide knowledge. Or use negotiating tactics from modern day. He could use modern 3D military movements to destroy his enemies while they only fight in 2D.
    But its only held together by luck and sheer force. He cannot negotiate so he just kills his enemies, that's it. He just fumbles through the story without anyone ever noticing, because they are just magically loyal to him so they don't critize him even if it's in his best interest.

    I think a challenge critics face is that of giving an evaluative judgement of the subject (in this case anime) of an experience. What your experience is depends heavily on your mindset/context within which you view it (including past experiences, mood at the time of viewing, positive/negative associations one might have with elements of the anime).
    When the context of one person doesn't coincide with that of another, a little more work has to be done to reach a mutual understanding, which, I think Digibro does pretty decently by explaining exactly why he dislikes/likes certain animes. "you're just cynical" is an easy cop out to having an actual conversation and potentially having your own opinion challenged.

  • @youngkappakhan

    The phrase is stupid and reductive but what I think it's trying to argue is that people shouldn't be so much of a stick in the mud that they need their stories to always be flawlessly written, nuanced, thought provoking & have no holes in their logic. I'm generalizing here so I don't intend for this to sound like I'm either defending the argument, excusing shitty writing or accusing you of being a stickler, but if people can't appreciate camp value and narrative simplicity, the problem might be a lack of emotional maturity & an inherent need to be perceived as intelligent and media literate more than anything pertaining to the substance of the media itself.

    Most people who get butthurt when their favourite shows are criticised are unable to appreciate when a show actually DOES hit the mark, when it DOES avoid plot holes or leaps in logic. Having a critical eye paves the way toward recognising something truly excellent. Turning your brain off means those creators worked as hard as they did for absolutely nothing. Imagine if Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick or Walt Disney told people to "turn their brain off" or "not be so critical." Oh wait, no, they wouldn't, because they were true visionaries who actually cared about their craft, and the results speak for themselves.
    There are works of art and entertainment out there that you can go over with a fine toothed comb, analyse it to insane depths, and still come out the other side considering it a masterpiece. In fact, it may even make you appreciate and enjoy it even more. I can definitely say that about certain cartoons I watched as a child; when I became an adult, I realised just how much effort went into them, noticed subtle little touches, and grew to love them even more.
    Without criticism, there would be no improvement. In a world where everyone "turned their brain off" every form of entertainment would go down the crapper.
    It's like some never ending joke... You tell someone you don't like something because it's not your cup of tea, and they embrace difference of opinion. You tell someone you don't like it because of specific reasons that you can back up with evidence and facts, compare it to other works of fiction that DO NOT make these mistakes, and they accuse you of being a snob, or not liking fun. What a bunch of butthurt children.

      good taste, and bad taste is completely subjective. yet we all can almost completely agree when something has little to no effort put into.

      I would say that is still in the realm of opinion. Because how would we measure this? We can't see how many hours they worked or what sort of procedures they used. And how can we be sure that effort will yield good results most of the time?

    i think the entertainment is enjoying how unreal this is. The problem is they over saturate it with unrealism to the point that its just unreally unreal.

    I don't see how the argument "turn your brain off" can be properly countered without acknowledging that people have different mindsets while watching anime. Most people aren't conscious anime critics but rather more likely they're just watching something while chilling and relaxing. The one thing I don't like about Digi's argument here is that he's not acknowledging the fact that because he has a UA-cam channel dedicated to watching anime with a critical eye, when he sees a continuity error he opens his brain's RAS (Reticular Activation System, or our brain's selective focus mechanism) to looking out for more errors because it makes for great channel content, thus pulling him out of the experience even more. Where as if I'm just watching something and I see a continuity error, I'm just like: "Oh, that's not what the creators want me to focus on." And then I focus back on the plot because I'm not looking for that shit I'm just trying to have a good time.

    This has to be the realest, most respectable anime critic UA-cam channel I've ever seen. I've been watching your videos back to back, and I'm always saying, "Yep, I agree. Yes. Exactly!" Regardless of the few times I disagree, I can still enjoy the video that disagreement is in! I wish other people could be like that. Anyway, I'm subbing no doubt!

    Yes, I can be entertained by that, but I'd rather learn so I choose to watch reviewers instead.

      Then you aren't one of the people trying to justify a criticism being bad as "you just think too much."

      +Tackson Caswell Yeah, if something looks worse the more you think about it, then it wasn't as good as you thought it was.

    If I am staring at a wall and enjoying myself, there is a lot of imagination going on upstairs.
