      Criss completely misunderstood Cunanan’s psychopathy. Andrew’s “likability” is that of a lethal parasite. The most successful serial killers are charming and gracious. Otherwise they wouldn’t be capable of luring their victims.

    He wanted to be loved and accepted. But as Ronnie pointed out on the last episode, the consequences of killing a famous person like Gianni Versace are different from the consequences of killing a non-famous person. Cunanan had been able to evade authorities for nearly three months because his murders in multiple states had been clumsily handled by different, uncommunicative jurisdictions. After Cunanan murdered an international celebrity, Gianni Versace, the investigation became more focused and aggressive-involving 1,000 agents across the country. According to the F.B.I., this intensity drove Cunanan inside, forced him to change his pattern. He was a destroyed person who wanted to be seen, when no one really did.
    In an effort to avoid the humiliation of his own failed life, Andrew Cunanan, who had wasted his gifts and lived resolutely on the surface, struck back. Fueled by drugs and filled with rage, his unmitigated ruin also drove him to destroy others, including the only person he had probably ever loved. With the exception of William Reese, each one of Andrew Cunanan’s victims - Jeff Trail, David Madson, Lee Miglin, and Gianni Versace - was like a piece of himself.
    In the end, Andrew Cunanan was a sad testament to vulgar, unrealized aspiration. The little boy who wanted a big house with an ocean view died hunted on the water with a gun for his last companion.
    This whole story is a tragic, from Andrew's point of view and from his victims'.

      Úlfar Viktor I love the way you phrased it, and I couldn’t agree more. He was so mad at himself, at life, for wasting it. He thought he had lost already, could’ve been because he was almost 30. Then these accomplished men in his life became repulsive to him because they reminded him of what he wanted but didn’t have. He did have an inferiority complex that he masked with his elaborate stories, but it seems that at some point, the stories stopped working for him. He had to face his reality-that he was “nothing.”

      @@Quebonitoeslobonito123 The pathological lying and tall tales he used to mask his reality stopped working when the people who he cared about the most, Trail and Madson, figrued him out and exposed him. They basically made him face what he didn't want to face. Humiliation, betrayal (from his point of view), desperation... If you add the constant drug use and alcohol drinking, it's not really strange that he totally snapped.

    Andrew has grown with a father who gave him excessive and unrealistic ideas about who he needed to be. For a child to grow like this.. it’s mindfucking for the brain. To Andrew this was his reality and when he realized that it could not be obtained and got rejected over and over well he just snapped. The lives he ruins and the pain he caused to people is unforgivable, but in the end I can only feel like he was also a victim in all of this.

    • @BBrunnel
      @BBrunnel 2 роки тому +8

      If you read Maureen Orth's book, Andrew was awful from a young age because his parents treated him like he was special beyond anything else. He had plenty of opportunities to obtain the riches he oh so wanted, including living with a man who practically gave him everything, his school friend who paid for his lifestyle and a well connected friend who offered him a well-paid job. Like your typical narcissist, Andrew wanted people to worship the ground he walked on and so working for it wasn't his way. I still don't quite understand him 'snapping' and turning into a killer because as Darren explains, he doesn't have the typical traits. I don't think Andrew was a victim at all. I haven't watched the show (just currently reading the book) and although I do see similarities between he and myself (being insecure and wanting to impress others), he was such a rotten person even before the murders that I can't feel sorry for him.

    • @georgexanthopoulos3003
      @georgexanthopoulos3003 Рік тому +1

      @@BBrunnel I think you basically validated his point about Cunanan also being a victim. It all started from his parents behavior towards him, so in a sense he was a victim of his parents' mistakes. Of course it's disproportional when you compare it to the people he murdered, but still the actor who played him made a very good point about wasted potential.

      A lot of it was how he was raised. He was treated special aside from his brother and sister. That's such a terrible thing to do to a child because guess what, that child has to be an adult one day and the world is not gona give you rainbows and lollipops. The world is mean. He had a reality check; his dad leaving, he is no longer 'rich' the way he thought he was, he had to work, his mom is not all there - it triggered something in him. It's quite sad because his whole life was a lie and reality kicked in and there is when the unhappiness came.

    Andrew's was another case of mindless success worship. Andrew was brought up being told that he was special, that is why he was showed with gifts which again confirmed the fact that he was successful and special.
    For him success was not a result of something. It was a state of being. As a child it was the only emotion he was taught and it was linked to his sence of self so deeply that he wouldn't know himself without it.
    And not surprisingly he would spend all his money on other people to show he was successful, because that was the only way he knew of gaining love.
    It is very natural that when he is own his own and failing in multiple levels- work, friendship and love, someone who was never taught as a child to deal with failure will not know how to deal with failure.

    His sober realism , and perspective on the reality of American society is what made Darren execute such a good performance, possessing so much empathy for Andrews' social archetype. ...Imagine what a better story/script writer, who expressed Andrews' inner conflict with homosexuality could have done with Darren ! ... But that would have been too touchy and frowned upon for Hollywood and its audience. Practically unfeasible, no matter how more of an intelligent story it would have resulted in.

    Cunanan was a narcissist, a flawless chameleon. Those who’ve had a lot of 1:1 contact with psychopaths recognize that they are bottomless & vacuous making them the ultimate apex predator.
    Their “gift” is in knowing what to show you to disarm you, a looking glass reflecting whatever mirage will get him what he wants. Norman Blachford was one of the few who, through “due diligence” discovered that far from being a diamond in the rough, Andrew was a two-bit hustler expertly playing each mark!
    Criss’s comment that there was “a lot to like about Andrew” is oddly naive. I doubt that there was ANYONE on this earth who ever met the real Andrew - including Andrew Cunanan himself. Psychopathy is probably genetic, it’s theorized that upbringing (may) determine whether such genes remain dormant. Whatever the case, his parents certainly didn’t nurture a healthy self esteem in this man.

      I basically agree with everything except the bit about Criss' comment about empathy. Like he said, it's his job to have empathy because it makes him a better actor. That's why he was excellent in this series. Also, I am pretty sure that Criss studied Cunanan way more than either of us, so it's a bit naive to think that we know the man better than Criss.

    He took innocent lives and was a danger whilst he was a live. If one of those victims were our friend or relatives I'm not sure we'd find it in our hearts to want to work out why he did what he did. The brutality, manipulation and intent was evident.
    I don't want to know what was going on in his mind n why. The brutality with no remorse was evident!
    What he couldn't have he would destroy and get great pleasure and satisfaction then relief .

    Wait, what was so positive about his life? What good things are happening? Based on the show, I observed a deeply depressing life and life style. I’m not sure I follow the whole “so many great things” going on characteristic. And again, based on the show, and in my non-professional opinion, his life fits perfectly Into the mold of what shapes a killer. From child hood to death, and in his own eyes, his life was chaotic, unbalanced, void of any love, void of meaningful relationships, full of rejection and out of control. All characteristics of a world created by his own father’s pure neglect. We saw three people who “knew” Andrew. One of them became hostage to him. One was murdered after trying to retrieve his gun. And one pleaded for him to turn himself in. All three of these people had one thing in common. They were all scared of him. To truly know Andrew you would be afraid of him. Maybe I’m mis understanding the comments here..

    The wasted potential of Cunanan's life and his troubled upbringing are undeniably sad, but are nothing in comparison to the pain and anguish he inflicted on his victims and the victims' families, who had their loved ones tragically taken away from them. This idea should have been at the core of Season 2, like it was with the OJ case in Series 1. The show definitely 'empathised' with Cunanan a little too much for my liking, or maybe that was how it appeared by the chronology of the show. It seems sneaky to show the brutal crimes and work backwards to him as a troubled teen and then, bam, hit us with the final episode.

    Sorry my heart doesn't "break" for Cunan. He was a cold-blooded killer. Enough said.
