And both feel very self important right away - and Cunanan, the fucker was said to have an IQ over 140,
but the successful destiny that he was pushed for by his parents drove him mad and sociopathic.
We are living in an age of the superficial and I think that's what connects Versace and his killer.
As much as society will boost the ego of the consumer, fashion is just the best way to draw out narcissism and early forms of sociopathy. I feel zero sympathy for any of the real people portrayed in this story.
You live in a world of Kardashian mentality, maybe you need to be erased from history : next.
The only sympathetic element of this show is Edgar Ramirez - but not his character.

Nani Chantel - I’ve written that in various video comment sections, too.
Darren has mentioned that, as well, that it was eerie for him to see pics of Cunanan. The 1/2 Filipino connection also partially freaked him.

    • @tori2dles
      @tori2dles 5 років тому +57

LXR Music - The series actually showed quite a sharp contrast between Giani & Andrew in that respect.
Over and over, it was shown how very down to earth and grounded Versace was. He was portrayed as a man who came from very humble beginnings; beginnings he never forgot and deeply cherished. He was a man who was connected and committed to his loved ones. Along with the interpersonal, Versace worked diligently at his craft so that he could support himself with his artistry. He didn’t want his creativity and desire to spread beauty to merely be a hobby. He had a dream to design clothing as a child and his mother trained him in dressmaking since he was a little guy.
So the opulence surrounding him wasn’t him being pretentious or showing off to impress others. His opulence was an extension of his creativity and desire to spread beauty wherever he was. He saw beauty as a healing, nurturing force. The point is, he was genuine.
Andrew Cunanan was raised to believe he was special and more important than others in that specialness. His father objectified him and placed him on a pedestal, just as he objectified others and trampled them under his feet. So Andrew wasn’t taught empathy or compassion. He was taught that he deserved the best simply because he existed and that others were put on earth to serve him and cater to his whims.
As long as he believed his father was a rich stock broker with Merrill-Lynch, this façade gave Andrew a sense of stability. But when his father abandoned the family, sold the home and fled the country with the entire family wealth, he realized his whole life was predicated on a lie.
But Andrew didn’t know how to start from something small and build up. He was used to luxury and favoritism at the get-go, not working to achieve something and celebrating the achievement. He wanted instantaneous reward and recognition without commensurate effort or achievement. His relationships were shallow and he didn’t feel actual love, though he was obsessed with the fantasies of perfect, illustrious, ideal love. He could not be himself as he didn’t know who he truly was. He could only project images of what he thought others wanted to see enough to hook them emotionally. Then he’d feed off the attention he garnered from that until he became bored or they rejected him. There was no authentic self, only a false self.
Andrew’s addiction to riches was materialism through and through. Whereas Giani’s opulence came from a true artist’s heart, Andrew’s came from delusions of grandiosity and a compulsion to exploit.

Yeah, I know. Unfortunately, the Cunanen character is the "sexy" one, which is kind of sick, but he's the one "everybody" wants to see. I think Edgar Ramirez is EVERY BIT the actor the Cunanen guy is, he's just by nature quieter, less fired up, as Versace was in life compared to Cu.

Edger Ramirez was absolutely perfect in this role. He exuded beauty, empathy, kindness that one wouldn't expect in a cursory view of a celebrity. He really found the heart of this beautiful man so cruelly snuffed out and whose love for his partner of 15 years was so horribly discounted, Especially how his family ignored his wishes for his love after his death, That in itself is yet another crime committed by Gianni's own family who he gave so much to. They are offensive in living off his legend but giving his heart and his wishes no consideration. Part of Gianni's magic came from the love he was lucky to have for so long. As a gay man his own family dismissed his heart, the FBI dismissed the importance of following up and doing a normal job in investigating a serial killer who left his footprints in full view!

I think the Versace series has launched two new wonderful actors into our midst. New to the general public only, I'm sure. They are both absolutely astonishing in their roles as Gianni Versace and Andrew Cunanen. Of course I mean the above, Edgar Ramirez and Darren Criss. The visuals in this show are mindblowing too. Best for TV series I've ever seen. Because the story is simple in it's way, (tortured soul kills famous person out of resentment) the set designer and director have a lot of TIME within the film to create beauty, fear, tragedy, pathos, revulsion. I hope to see a lot more of these two. And kudos to them for taking part in a story about gays. Still takes courage.

Just binged watched the entire show! Amazing acting and layout of the events. We were not privy to the why it happened in 1997, but this story was riveting and I understand they put in scenarios and language of what "may" have happened. The story they told from his childhood to the end made complete sense on why he did what he did. The way his father treated him as a youth and put him on this unattainable pedestal, made him feel special, unique, he could do no wrong. Then in the end, he found his father was a liar, a thief, pushed him over the edge and he found out he wasn't really all that special after all. This is how narcissists are made folks. Very troubling.

This is what acting is about. It isn't about casting straight people into straight roles, or gay into gay roles. It is about casting the talent that can "service" the role as the director sees fit. Sometimes they are huge misses, sometimes, however, they are brilliant. In both of these cases, these actors showed a true connection with their characters. You forget who they are as you watch their performances. That is what we should focus on in film as an art.

I can't even look at Darren after having just watched the show. Especially since they didn't do much to his look for the character and I mean the way he portrayed him... it just made Andrew sooo so scary.

They did a lot. They shave the triangle tip part of his eyebrows to make it straighter, they straightened his hair (his natural hair is super curly), and they gave him a very chic indie look when Darren has more of a quirky style.

emily f Not for reasons of stereotyped preference but, unfortunately, there is more pressure on gay men to dress well and more on straight men to appear as though they do not care about their appearances. Darren, like increasingly more and more straight and gay actors, is refusing to conform to externalized pressure for those same reasons that are explored in the show.

This was THE best thing I've seen on TV since True Detective S:1. Edgar was brilliant with dignity and poise and did Gianni a solid respect. but Darren was a goddamn phenomenon. I remember his murder spree and this story came back to life thru Darren. He was brilliant. Chilling. EXCELLENT acting.

I was fortunate to see the show and was intrigued by the non-linear structure that as a filmmaker not having access to the brilliant Ryan Murphy, I bought the book to try & understand the motivation. The book was very linear and I was disappointed not find info regarding the decision to do the story in such an unconventional manner.
So I am very grateful for this informative interview with these two excellent actors especially Edgar's explaining how it came about, and additionally that each episode had its own theme.
    Bravo & thank you!
Also, the adaptation of the book, the creation of the flesh-and-blood characters out of what is essentially a dry journalist reportage involving dozens of interviewed people, and creating dialogue to progress the story, complimented by the actors superb portrayals embodying them in such a visceral way, is totally amazing.

In one scene where he puts his hand over his mother's mouth and seeing those gorgeous eyes close up, so full of evil, I had to remember IT IS ACTING! Just as he said, it IS a craft. Edgar is also nominated. I usually don't watch the Emmys but if Darren or Edgar do not win, I'm gonna time travel in a flash & ask questions! Well..would like to.

When they speak of "just 20 years ago" I worked in management in Orlando w/Ticketmaster and several co-workers were openly gay men. My stepbrother called me at work from Minneapolis in absolute distress as his best friend had been diagnosed w/HIV & this was 1990. So a bit confused about closeted gays. It was 1980 I went with a fellow floral designer to my first gay club in Nashville and couldn't believe all of the hot men. I think I with another female coworker were the only two women.
Another 20 years earlier in 1977, Miami Beach was filled with elderly Jewish folks. I worked at The Fontainebleau in communications & didn't learn of some of the people the Novacks hid out until the 2000s docs "Square Grouper" "Cocaine Cowboys" and later learned of Mrs. Novack's murder and then their spoiled only son Benji's (who maybe 4 years younger was a rude little snot on the phone with me) murder & his sick obsessions.
Sometimes you'd like to remain in innocence and not know you worked for the underbelly of the world.
THAT houseboat was actually there in the 70s and don't know if it was actually still there when they filmed or built a set. When Cunanan was calling his dad, in the background you see these arches with round holes and they are still there on the facade of that building. There used to be several houseboats but there are none, just "yachts" moored across from The Fontainebleau and other hotels next door.
I have to add that Darren's performance in the last episode moved my eyes to get misty knowing the father he grew up with, alleged sexual abuse, abandoning the family and hearing his friend Lizzie...something must have really affected Andrew so deeply to do what he did. Darren and Edgar certainly deserve Emmy awards.
