I did have it set up because my tail piece was slammed almost to the body, causing the break angle to hit the back of the bridge. The g string was buzzing as well. Good luck with yours ! Hope it doesn't take too long.
I am a set painter by trade. When we ate anything for film it’s always better looking from far away. The problem lies in the false distressing process. Nothing can mirror real distress. The closer you get the worse the effect is. No matter the artist, at some point it will reveal it’s false.

For that tuning issue, there is always the Stringbutler. No holes in the guitar, it fits under the washers on the tuners. Quite inexpensive too.

Great job man, thanks! Nice in depth review. Makes me wanna pull the trigger, I’m only hesitant because I think it’s similar to my 2019 LP standard ‘60s. I’m steering toward an SG with P90’s instead, what do you think?
Thank you! It will indeed be very similar to the 2019 standard. You would only need to put a high output pickup in it and itd basically be the same guitar minus the finish color. I almost bought a 2020 standard. I would've sold it to get the AJ though(i love silverbursts) . If it were me, I'd replace the 2019 with the AJ and also buy the p90 guitar. But if you love your standard, keep it and buy the p90 to have more variety.
My flying V sounds almost just like that ! Your Les Paul seems to have more busy nuance going on in the distortion which is pretty cool !
Probably has a lot to do with the amp too. What are you playing through?

I got mine as my first full fat gibson (my LTD M-201 needs a tone of work), As stated totally love this guitar, am no tool fan, just wanted a silver burst. Pickus sound great, I dont think its too heavy at all weight wise, and the neck/action are great. I do miss my jumbo frets but thats just because I have been so used to them.
I use mostly jumbo frets as well. The size adjustment wasn't too bad for me, I do wish they were stainless frets though , just personal preference.

I really appreciate it!🤘 so the amp os a MLC subzero 60. It was my dream amp for years and i just got it about a year ago. Also using an mlc vanilla sky overdrive. The amp is dialed in at 1:00 for everything, plus some exra mids. I recorded using a captor x(cab sim) into a scarlet 18i8 interface

You mean more affordable? The standard compared to a studio/tribute or epiphone standard is also not practical.
Would've liked to see how it looked with binding on the headstock. That might've made it the coolest standard I've ever seen but I think it still is.

@@cvkballisticrhino1393 I have one of those old 03 standards in teal with the binding (I think it's called pacific reef) because I was looking for a Les Paul with custom specs without the price tag basically because of AJ. It initially had issues with tuning that I just couldn't fix and I set it up 3 times and never quite got it where I wanted. A nut replacement later and it's phenomenal.
When I saw the standard come out, I was disappointed because there are some specifications on it that I feel are just too different from the LP Custom Specs. Chief among them is the mahogany neck. But, I also recognized that it has some AMAZING specs for a standard in my opinion. MOP inlays on an Ebony fretboard with a custom bridge pickup, and I think Gibson makes some of the best pickups. It's a REALLY cool guitar in its own right.
I also want to tell you that I think this is the best playing I've seen in any review of an Adam Jones guitar for Epiphone, the Custom, or the Standard.

I listen to a review and one guy said the Adam Jones neck on the standard was hard to play. Is it similar to a 60’s neck? I prefer the 60’s neck. I am used to Charvels from the 80’s and Jackson’s and Ibanez. What’s your thoughts? Thank you. New Sub here!
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
The neck is definitely going to be thicker Tha. Jackson and ibanez. It's not 50s style chunky, but it is slightly thicker than the 60s style neck. I usually prefer slim 60s style also, and the AJ still feels good for me.

When you got yours did you have a really dry fretboard at all?
Mine came bone dry and really hard to play. Slides are so sticky and grippy.
I’ve oiled and conditioned but it still seems to be grippy.
Any help or advice would be amazing man!

Yes, mine was so dry it almost looked like rosewood. It took oiling it 2 times and playing a lot to get it to feel right. It also darkened up quite a bit.

The amazon link is in the description. The standard headstock is a but smaller than the custom so you don't need to ruin the finish by sticking it on. It just sits on the spacers and is held by string tension. It has had 0 effect on tuning or sustain.

@@brandonpugh2475 yeah, when I first got it g and low e string were pretty bad. The tailpiece was also slammed all the way down to the body. I had to get it set up before all the potential was unlocked.

I talked to my sweetwater rep about reserving an Epiphone version (recently teased on his Instagram). This makes me tempted to pull the trigger on the standard. I'm fortunate to be able to afford it, but I don't want to take the gamble have it all fucked up. Plus, I do absolutely love the look of the custom fret markers, but I don't have any real high end guitars right now..

Very gentle review. Thank you. One question still drvies me crazy...could you tell me the distance from the pole pieces to the strings on Bridge PU? I think AJ nails the PU unter the Strings... enjoy this beautiful instrument.
That's always tricky, I tend to always adjust that on most guitars, trying to get it as close as I can , but too close can cause the magnet to pull the notes out of tune. I ended up with my low E at 3.25 and high e at 2.75. I could probably get even closer.

For the PU setting I am sursprised. I think and feel really close (1.75 mm about both sides) is that magical sweet spot. What do you think about that settings? Factory AJ settings? (Sorry, I am interested in PU settings in depth.)
@@tr1cott504 I may give that a try. I thinknit also depends on what your are playing through. The MLC amp has so much gain to use, and it's already very tight, so my height works best through my set up, but could vary depending on what amp is being used.
Don’t know how this video got suggested to me but I don’t regret it. For the longest time I was a strat player and recently I started playing on a Les Paul and I feel like I’ve found the guitar for me. Not that other guitars aren’t easier to play but there’s just something about it.
One thing that I’ve heard is that the shorter scale length is worse for low tunings. Have you had any experience with that ?
Depends on weather or not you want really thick string gauges . I'm still using 10s for drop d on this les paul and it's fine. But I never liked going lower than drop D on a les paul because it gets too flubby. And I. Not a fan of super thick strings. My other guitars are all 25+" scales for the lower tunings.
I reeeeeally wanted to get that guitar, mainly because I love silverbursts, but the reverb scalpers are asking way too much for it. I ended up getting a standard modern for almost 2 grand less and I'm gonna send it to refinish it in silverburst with a proper teardrop burst on the back of the body.
I'd love to see that after it's finished. Yeah reverb resale people are ridiculous lately. There are a few shops here and there that have them new at retail price. Just have to call around. I lucked out, someone posted a shop link that had it on a Facebook group.
@@cvkballisticrhino1393 you were super lucky. I just couldn't find one at a decent price. The cheapest one that I found was $3900 which is was too much for a standard and I wouldn't be able to afford ir either. Also for that money you could find a used LP Custom.
If I remember it, I'll send you a picture of the guitar once it's refinished, but it will take at least 4 months to get the job done, since custom shops aren't particularly fast.
Great review and I've seen way too many UA-cam videos on these. I own an Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro silver burst that I love and weighs about 10 pounds too. For a Chinese made guitar I believe mine is exceptional (yeah right). I can't afford the real deal but boy do I love the Gibson Les Paul silver burst model. But I'm also an Adam Jones fan boy. I am not familiar with the Lamborghini guitar are you saying Aris Titties?

I just received my Epi Jerry Cantrell wino and it truly is freakishly good, and at 9.6 pounds, it's not light but not too heavy either and it hits that sweet spot for sure. I work with Tool. I do the synth programming and upkeep of the synth DC uses on CCT. When this guitar came out, I jokingly told Adam i put one of the nicks in it that they duplicated. He got the joke, it was funny.

This thing look so awesome...I am wondering though if the hardware configuration makes it kind of niche. Looking to get into something new, and though I play a lot of heavy stuff, I play many genres. Would you say it was well rounded?
Yes and no. It still has that classic les paul neck pickup sound , but the bridge is definitely more suited for high gain metal. Definitely a niche guitar for people who want to sound like adam, but amp settings and volume control can change a lot.

So I'm a PRS guy, and have smallish hands - PRS Wide-Thin/Pattern-Thin necks always feel perfect to me. I haven't played a ton of Gibsons.. How does the neck compare to a PRS WT? I'm assuming I wouldn't find it comfortable but it's tempting because I'm such a Tool nerd 🤓
It is a bit thicker, but for what uts worth, I love Prs pattern thin and pattern regular, and this Gibson seems to be more like pattern regular.
It's been a year, how do you feel about this guitar now?
Just ordered mine was wondering. If ordering a les paul custom with his pick up from sd distortion would be closer to his tone vs gibson standard with there high gain pick ups? Looking forward to getting mine either way
The standard comes pretty close. But there are so many factors in getting his exact tone. Gotta have the right amps and pedals as well.

@@InvalidUsername2113the standard has a slightly smaller headstock than the custom, so the little adhesive strip on the back is not needed. It sits on the tuning peg spacers, and the string tension holds it in place. No damage to the finish since it doesn't even touch it, and it did not give me any tuning issues either.
How did you attach the mirror? I was thinking the command strips might do the trick well.
It sat on the tuner spacers held in by string tension. It does not touch the finish.

I associate silverbursts with James Iha. And was that a Manhattan Midnight Standard? I didn't think they made those as early as 2003.
Yes. 2003 was the first year, it was a limited guitar center run. My favorite color of all the Manhatten midnight variations.
Hi, what is the neck carve like? Shreddable? I am used to my PRS Singlecuts with wide fat necks.
I've never gotten along with thin necks.
I know the Adam Jones is chunkier.
My main LP is a 2003 Standard with 50s neck.
I read on Gibson's site that the Adam Jones Standard has a unique upper neck carve to facilitate upper fret access and lead playing. From Gibson - "carved neck heel facilitates added playing comfort"
It's not too chunky at all. I come from using prs as well and it's similar to pattern regular. Ot won't be as thick Asa 50s style neck. Sort of an in between 50s and 60s. I've never really consideredles paul necks fast due to the nitro being a bit sticky.
@@cvkballisticrhino1393 I don't notice any difference with nitro. My LPs are super fast.
I have a 2003 LP Standard 50s that is really fast. My PRS guitars are equally as fast as my Gibsons. Biggest difference is upper fret access. Gibson says the AJ Standard has better fret access.

I've only seen the Modern, Access and Lifeson models have good upper fret access.

What's your amp setup? I just got my AJ Standard but dunno what I should get to replicate his sound (can't do a stack/combo in apartment).
I use a mlc subzero 60 into a captor x. The captor x allows you to crank a tube amp at apartment friendly volumes. What ever you play through, use lots of mids !

I found the normal Duncan Distortion in the normal Seymour Duncan shop, but you said something about the DDJ custom wound by MJ in the custom shop. I checked all categories in the Seymour Duncan custom shop website but I am unable to find it. Am I blind? Should be in the "Humbucker" section no?
It's tricky. You have to select custom humbucker High gain, large ceramic, and then in the comments you say you want a ddj wound by mj.

I'm in line for the Epiphone version that comes with the proper specs. I'm swapping in EMG 81/85s and Gotoh magnum keystone locking tuners off the Epi LP custom silverburst thats getting traded in with the Epi ADCB '59 LP. Hard for me to trade two perfectly good setup and ready to go, proven guitars for this AJ sig. I told them not to send me any 10lb. guitar.
They sure got the epiphone right! I hope to try one soon. I think you'll be happy with trading for it for sure.
@@cvkballisticrhino1393 Kind of bummed the neck carve is the same flat D as the normal customs. If it's over 9lbs I'm most likely selling it. Depends how it's balanced. I could use the profits from all 3 Epiphones to get the Tokai gold top I really want!

Just got ordered on of these, was the tuning not stable without the locking tuners? not sure if I should upgrade.
It was stable, I just prefer locking tuners for easier string changes.

Is it calibrated in any way/shape/form for drop D?
No. Just a standard les paul scale length 24.75. I recommend through 10-52 gauge strings on it, though this one has the stock 10-46 set
Fast forward and you can get them for $2500-2600 used on Reverb now. I get offers for $2700 brand new as well. I’m gonna wait a little longer tho. Feel like this recession is gonna get real bad in 2023 and should be able to find them even cheaper.

Is the Neck really that chunky or more like an Esp Ltd U-Shape 🤔?
I'm not familiar with esp necks. It's not a thick 50s style. Thicker than the thin 60s style. It's a good mid sized neck
Man I wish these things were like 2k instead of 4k lol. Had my eyes on the Epiphone lately but I just can't stand the artwork at the back. I would have bought it if it had the same back as the Gibson's. Anyway, awesome guitar and awesome playing. Cheers!

@Mathieu Rioux well, I actually sold it 😔. I ended up finally getting a Custom, so I had to sell it to offset the price. I really regret it though. It was one of the best I ever owned, but the silverburst custom was always my dream guitar. Wish I could have kept both, but I'm not rich. I still know who has it. Maybe one day I'll be able to buy it back.

Great guitar looks and sound amazing, my only complain is that AJ signature, it would be perfect if it wasnt signature.. just a standard. Im usually no no for signature, like not wanting to replicate anyone

I bet they do. I wonder of it'll follow the same trajectory as the AJ LP. Limited custom shop then eventually an epiphone model. Space it out and milk the AJ cash cow for years.

Gibson needs come down on them prices, some of these budget affordable guitars are coming up with some great quality. Gibson is not doing anything except raising there prices.
As is every other guitar company. Everything in general seems to be increasing.
Get the epiphone versions then. They are made by Gibson

IMO, the best silverburst is always an LPC. The second best is the old ESP eclipse silverburst with 4 knobs with double binding. Next is another old ESP eclipse silverburst with 3 knobs and front only binding. Your guitar, to me, looks like the last guitar that I mention. Sadly ESP no longer produce eclipse silverburst. So your guitar currently is the ONLY silverburst that doesn't cost an arm and kidney.
I've owned one in the past. It was a good guitar but just didn't quite get there for me. My LPC is for sure my favorite les paul I've owned, but this AJ standard is really just as good, minus the aesthetic appointments of the custom.
Is yours ‘lightly aged’ ? Mine is . Does that make it a “Murphy Lab” lol ?
Its just an "aged silverburst " color, but no fake scars, battlewounds or checking.👍
I ended up getting #0007! I'm super stoked about that! But yeah I agree with everything you said. I'm blown away by the guitar! I wasn't sure I was going to like it being that it's not a custom. I was really worried about the pickups but figured I could always replace them which isn't that difficult or expensive. But when I got it and plugged it in I was just blown away! The DC high gain pickup really impresses me still. The sustain was one of the first things I noticed that was noticeably better than my 2021 60s spec Les Paul. Anyway, thanks for making this video! I've been watching every video I can find that reviews this beautiful guitar! Did yours come with that mirror? Have you seen how some of them came with thumb bleeders?
Nice ! 0007empest. I bought the mirror separately actually (Amazon link in the description) . I did see the few with bleeders, I would have taken them off if mine had them, not a fan of those things. Glad you love yours too! Cheers!

Maybe Pickup height is a bit too much; try dampening it a little bit.
Some guys hate flat radius fretboard a. I hate that. Love the 12" radius of the Gibson and 10" of a PRS. Can't stand shredder guitars, lol.
I've tried every guitar and much prefer the huge chunk of wood.
PRS singlecuts are better than the LP in most cases. You get that amazing singlecut tone but upper fret access. Thinner guitars just sound thin. That's a big reason singlecuts are so great. The tone!!! Who cares about the speed.
That said, the PRS SC is like a modern speedster but has the fat singlecut tone!!!
I love pattern regular on prs. Not too chunky, yet still gives it that fat sound. I have a cu24 with that neck and it's a very full sounding guitar.

I'm struggling with the thought of paying $3000 for an LP when Gibson never improves their guitars, except maybe the LP Modern. They still have the old school stop tail where the string can hit thr edge of thr bridge and the crazy headstock angle and nut slot angle. PRS just seems better designed and still can get you the rich and fat Singlecut sound.
But it sounds like you love the AJ.

@@Bognerman14 this one, yes. All my guitars have a tremolo, so it's nice to have a hard tail again. Prs single cuts are indeed amazing, and also for the price you can get an amazing top. But this les paul just has some kind of magic to it that I don't find in every guitar. I considered adding a 594 to the arsenal instead, but ended up deciding on this with no regrets
@@cvkballisticrhino1393 Got ya! I never use a tremolo so only one guitar of mine has a trem. That said, I struggle if I want to deal with another Gibson or just go PRS.
The Adam Jones is beautiful and even if it's clunky, it's got classic charm. That said I find for me the fastest playing necks and fretboard are Gibson and PRS and I've had so mmay guitars in my 35 years of playing. I used to live in shred guitars like my Ibanez, Anderson, Suhr and Wolfgang models but always ended up back on Gibson and PRS. For me the guitar has to feel like home. Big singlecuts are the only guitars that feel like home. It's like when I talked to Zakk Wylde and Tremonti (I used to do radio/magazine reviews in the 90s and 2000s), many guys like this could play any guitar they want, but choose LPs and PRS with the 10-12". One of the most technical guys I know locally lives on Strats and LPs. Some of us can't play those flat radius boards. Feela unnatural to me. Personal preference.
Thanka for the info on the Adam Jones. I may still get one but can't afford it till June. I have time to decide on another PRS SC from the 2000s or an SC250, unless I get an Adam Jones!

Also, Gibson ever fixed the problems with their bridge. The strings still hit the edge of the bridge. Bad design.
I don't like Tool. I don't even know who Adam Jones is, but I think this guitar is cool. I was going to ask "Why did you put a mirror on it?" but I was able to figure that out with a Google search.

Thank you!! I definitely feel the same way about the fake patina treatment on a brand new guitar. I look at it as ruining a perfectly good guitar. Let it age gracefully on it's own for real.
Re: your comments on Gibson pricing vs. other similar guitars (ie PRS)......... it's not an issue of high price, with Gibson it's a matter of high price AND poor quality. At least when you buy a PRS you are getting impeccable high quality. Gibson has their high price but delivers sub-Epiphone quality. You roll the dice when you buy a Gibson and they really don't care.😐 Notwithstanding, your Adam Jones there is a beautiful guitar.
